KFSM-TV 5 in the Right Place at Right Time Over the Weekend.
This from an e-mailer: " KFSM-TV 5 was on the scene of the car chase with the Massachusetts gay bar suspect in Norfork, Arkansas, and has some amazing exclusive video on their web site. The two men who shot the video, Fred McClure and Robert Houston, were on assignment in the area for the show 5 Outdoors and happened to be at the right place at the right time."

82 Comments:
WOW.. Talk about being at the right place at the right time. Kudos to KFSM for their quick reaction. Great video.
Unbelievable.
Forget the video. How about 40/29's awesome phoner!
KFSM was lucky. It could have easily happened to KHBS or KNWA.
The above statement is true.
i HATE channel 5....but, lucky or not, they owned that story...have to give the devil their due.
This was a poorly produced segment. The "exclusive video" was buried in the fisherman piece. Not only must a story have a beginning, middle and end--the complete story telling must follow this pace.
The produce should have come out with the shot of the shooter being rushed to the ambulance. Then set the scene with some wide shots. A walking the viewer through the video follows, then the fisherman story (where you can reuse some of the vid), then the debrief. The debrief with the Outdoor guy should also be produced--choose the best video and let's talk specifically about it.
To much unreference video and little storytelling. Exclusive video, being in the right place and the right time--all goes to pot if you don't produce the newscast.
Those are my thoughts. Yours may differ.
Lucky or not, this just shows that KFSM is the dominant channel in the market. 40 & 24 are far behind, and getting further everyday.
The above post obviously didn't see the weekend coverage. Taking another angle is good for news. Check all your facts before wasting your time posting.
Thanks for the critique, but it is completely invalid in this case. The video made it to the station as the open was rolling. It was rolled raw on the air. If you noticed, the anchor even said he was seeing it for the first time. To do what you suggest, we would have had to hold the story until the next day.
I'm guessing Bill works for a competing station. I watched it on-line from outside the market, and thought it was terrific. The young anchor did a fine job of debriefing his reporter, who was clearly out of his element. I mean that in a complimentary way. The reporting on the phone was comlete and credible, although I have to admit I chuckled a little when he through references in there about the outdoors angle he was there to cover. I guess you've got to promote your own show when you can.
Sometimes, we get bogged down in over-producing things. This was a clear case of substance over style. Sometimes, it's better to be lucky than to be good. IN this case, the station was both. Congratulations to all.
Of course, I bring my own credibility into question by posting ridiculous typos. Sorry, I'm a first-timer.
You're right. On 9-11 everyone should have waited until they could properly produce the story with a beginning, middle, and end BEFORE they showed any of the video.
It's called breaking news. For those of you who smoked too much dope in college....that's news that's immediate.
No, this could not have as "easily happened to KHBS or KNWA." Why? Because those stations don't produce a local outdoors show like KFSM, so those two stations would not have been in Norfolk to film a show about trout fishing.
The planets aligned for KFSM on this one. But part of the alignment was caused by KFSM doing something unique to this market.
KFSM got LUCKY that they were doing a show in Norfork that weekend. They could have been in Marianna or Smackover for all we care.
So YES... it could have happened to ANY station. I kinda wish Jonesboro had gotten a piece of this one so we wouldn't be on here bickering and pissing on one another about who's the better station. Ultimately....outside of NWA..no one really cares, and I imagine a lot of people in NWA don't give a hoot either.
5 did have great video...and they were lucky. give them their props...and hope it's you next time
What is that all about? Some people from KFSM frequent a gay bar? Really? Is is the one called the Back Door?
Lucky or not, this just shows that KFSM is the dominant channel in the market. 40 & 24 are far behind, and getting further everyday.
be careful with what you say...we're in book right now..and i confidently say that nielsen won't oversample the River valley like they did in November....if Benton and Washington counties are properly sampled, or have an equal share for that matter..you'll see a swing in the February ratings. Channel 5 may dominate the River Valley, but 40/29 has a firm hold across Northwest Arkansas

Hmmm....I believe the networks did pieces on this. Seems that CBS had crews in Mt. Home and used the KFSM video.
I am Bill, and I do not work at a competing FT. Smith/Fayetteville station. I am an Arkansas native, having worked in LR for many years as a reporter and producer, currently I serve as a station manager outside of Arkansas.
If this was breaking news, and I have not gone back to watch it, it certainly wasn't marketed as such. And if the tape was so late into the station, how did the reporter/photographer producing the fisherman PKG have time to write the video into her story and the photog have time to edit the video into the story?
The coverage is what I would expect from a small market station. I offered my comments as opportunity to for young producers to get better. If that rubs you the wrong way--get tougher.
My thoughts, yours may differ.
--Bill
Bill, you are talking about two different stories.
Your survey methodology argument doesn't hold water. KFSM also won in July. Survey methodology doesn't explain the number of points 40/29 has watched slip away over the last five years. Sorry, but nice try.
Hey Bill, why are you confusing two different days of coverage?
The tape got late into the station on SATURDAY, when KFSM first reported the news. Then they coninued on SUNDAY.
Bill, you're talking about MONDAY, when they changed views to the fisherman, when KFSM had already covered the breaking news for 2 days.
Once again, get your facts straight before posting your nonsense.
My apologies to your sensabilities. I take away from the experience the small mindedness of those that hide behind anonymous postings.
Please go about pissing and moaning about what your didn't like without offering any constructive remarks.
--Bill
Bill,
If you want a constructive comment, here it is. You looked at the wrong story. That is not intended in a "small minded way."
The FIRST rule of journalism is to make sure your facts are right. You were basing your comments on incorrect facts. We were just trying to help you by offering some constructive criticism and pointing out your error.
I'm sorry that you took offense. I'm sure you were well-intentioned.
Ummm, did I see things wrong or did KFSM scoop everyone again tonight? The FBI raids two police departments and they are the ONLY ones who cover it?
Dang that must be the luckiest newsroom ever!
Channel 5 shoots and scores again!
well i might have bashed 5 earlier... BUT i have to admit a win when i see one. I find it hard to believe they got this and no one else did. I would say something about being lucky here but this was an equal opportunity story and i shall not provide any excuse's for their competition... THIS TIME
KFSM may have been in the right place over the weekend, but I think they're a week behind on Super Bowl stuff. Why were Bobbie and Brad making Game Day food this morning, with a football on the desk?
Bobbie and Brad planned to do this the day before the Super Bowl, but something came up and it had to be delayed.
It would really help Channel 5 if they get the story first AND report it correctly at the same time.
Novel idea, aint it?
I haven't seen KFSM not have their stories right. Sounds like a jealous KHBS worker to me...
KFSM's morning show is horrible. Superbowl snacks DAYS after the Superbowl? Great judgement to STILL air the segment. What a joke.
KFSM's morning show is so horrible it comes in #1 in the ratings. In fact at 6AM it pulls a 30 share. Not bad for something horrible. Its a shame KHBS can't get a #1 rating since they have Good Morning America to back them up. I personally think thats even more horrible.
I think Bobbie and Brad cook every Friday morning.

OK... what exactly is it that makes KFSM's morning show so much better?
I hear Channel 5 had to retract a good portion of their report out of Oklahoma. Is this true?
It is a classic mix of a sugar-coated, fake, rambling Bobbie Miller....and one of those Flickingers (the one with the accent that makes him impossible to understand)
you can read both reports on 5newsonline.com and decide for yourself. there was no retraction, merely clarification on the part of the two law enforcement agencies. 5 reported what an ohp spokesman said last night. that they would be assuming *some responsibility. today, both agencies (fbi & ohp) said that was only temporary yesterday and only if necessary. the report was not incorrect the night before. they said today, that both moffett and roland's p.d.'s were active.
"I hear Channel 5 had to retract a good portion of their report out of Oklahoma. Is this true? "
I hear KHBS and KNWA both missed the report out of Oklahoma. Is this true?
believe the story wasn't in Northwest Arkansas -- KNWA wouldn't cover it....KHOG had it
Brad may have an accent, but at least he doesn't sound stuffier than a turkey at Thanksgiving like our friend Charles Salser.
KHOG had it on Thursday. KFSM has it on Wednesday. There has been no retraction of any kind. KFSM report Wednesday night was almost identical to what the Times Record reported on Thursday morning.
Whether you like 5 or not, they won this one. 40 will win one at some point, but there's no need to fling lies around about retractions, etc.
All the venom here is a little sad. Fact is you have three stations in the market following three very different philosophies.
The viewers will decide which they like best. And, when it comes down to it, their opinion is the only one that matters.
There is nothing wrong with competition, but let's keep it friendly. February's book will be out soon enough.
"I haven't seen KFSM not have their stories right. Sounds like a jealous KHBS worker to me... "
Ok, does anybody remember on an earlier post when KFSM said the person of the year was sonny bono...not u2's bono???? Hasn't sonny been dead for a few years? I'd hate to be the person who's reading this going...KFSM gets their stories right.
Anybody remember when Leslie Wright introduced herself as "Donna Bragg"?
Those prompters are great!
Leslee Wright is a great anchor... don't blame the prompter.
I bet it was that pesky prompter that told Salser to put 4-6" of snow in the forecast.....
Another Salser snowstorm blown out of proportion. Where is the 3-5" he had for Sebastian, Scott, and Logan counties? He said an average of 1-3". So far, only isolated 1" amounts in the higher elevations of the Ozark or Ouachita National Forest. Most places where people actually live, not even that. When is he going to stop forecasting the worst case scenerio every freakin' time?
If Salser was going that high... what were Garrett and Katzfey forecasting?
From what I saw, Garrett had about half the snow that Salser had for the River Valley. Katzfey said snow showers in the morning with little or no accumulation in NWA, which is pretty much what happened there. Seems like most of NWA had a anywhere from a trace to at most half an inch. I'm not sure if he made a specific forecast for the Fort Smith area , since they don't really bother with them much anymore.
i think salser and their wx dept (probably mandated so by the news director or whoever) definately hypes the weather to try and draw in a few viewers...to bad when they do this they piss everyone off after their half foot of snow is only just a few flakes
I think what you may have at 40/29 is a situation where Charles goes with his forecast and the mets that are under him are forced to go with what he is saying to
1. Maintain continuity between shifts
2. To avoid pissing him off changing the forecast
Even though the morning and weekend meteorologists may disagree with his forecast, they almost feel forced to go with his forecast just so it doesn't confuse the daylights out of people. And if you do change his forecast you'd better believe he will change it back to what he had. Then of course, if he is wrong he will get roasted for it...and so will his staff.
Just a thought.
whats really funny is how 40 and salser will claim they were 100% right the whole time. actually they have already done that...they said something about forecasting it 7 days out when they had 50s and sun 5-7 days out lol. whats best is they will probably say their 4-6 they forecasted is right b/c a 2 mile by 2 mile area of land called mt. magazine got 3-4 inches.
Katzfey and Lewis nailed it again. Strange how KNWA had no live element this AM with the snow falling?
Probably best they didn't do a live shot. Its not like it there any was travel problems. Doing live shots every time a snowflake comes down is a joke and just creates unneccessary panic among the people. Its gotten to the point where the viewers can't tell the difference between the snows that matter to those that don't.
You obviously don't answer phone calls in Northwest Arkansas in the morning. I agree with you in principal, but geez, people here go nuts when the clouds even look like snow. Even a flurry here is a big deal. Why? I don't know, but it is the most snow crazy market I've ever seen. I guess because they rarely get any.
Charles is too worried about his receeding hair line (ever notice how he talks with his eyes wide open? He thinks it makes his forehead look smaller, and that is no joke) and his public image to even bother with a little thing like getting his forecasts right. Too bad nobody likes him. Why do you think Drew was out live at the home show? The people in charge of the home show said he was too much of a...(fill in the explative) and they didn't want him back
KHBS had crews out this AM too, but only in Fort Smith. I wonder if Lewis lives at KFSM he was on last night and this morning.
Well... if you talk to Charles he will swear on a stack of Bibles that he one of the best if not the best tv meteorologist in NWA. And he has a knack for making it known how good he is.
But I guess one would argue...if he's so good, why the heck is he still in market #104?
Go figure.
Garrett practically lives at KFSM, if there is weather to talk about. The guy is HARDCORE about severe weather.
I have heard stories where he'd cut into programming for storms over 100 miles away or for a storm that was marginally severe at best.
I admire is passion for weather though...can't take that away from him.
Besides...if anyone is supposed to be on-air during a weather event like that, it should be the chief. Unlike Charles Salser who seems to be M.I.A. during recent signficant weather events (i.e. NWA Ice Storm Christmas 2000)
The last time I checked, having a live element every time a snowflake fell was like having Star Jones live at Payless everytime BOGO happens...
A little birdy told me that Charles popularity is in fact so low that it is likely he will be fired between now and may sweeps. I for one wonder why its taken them so long. If they had a more popular chief met they would compete much easier with 5
All the Charles bashing is so tasteless.
Yes, Charles has his quirks, but there's no reason for some anonymous person to come on here and say his job security is in danger. Unless you heard that directly from his boss and would like to attribute him, quiet!
That is so rude, and I'm pretty certain whoever said that doesnt work at KHBS/KHOG.

Yes, it is tasteless, but if you knew Charles, you would understand.
it would not be the first time that a Hearst person would tell all about Charles.
He said that there 1-2" fell in Benton County. BS! How come KNWA, KFSM, National Weather Service, or anyone else didn't report that number? How come when the clouds cleared this afternoon, I see a bare ground on the satellite picture? Not only is he inflating his snowfall forecast before the event, but he is also misleading the public about what actually happened AFTER the event.
Charles is gonna be fired? I highly doubt that.. seriously. He may be a bit difficult, but I don't think they'd take the chance on bringing someone else in from outside that people don't know. If anything...if they did fire him, Drew would be promoted to chief since he has been there for 4 years and people know him.
But.. I could be wrong. You annoy people enough, doesn't matter how good you are, how long you've been around or how many viewers like you. If you are a pain and a problem at work, you'll get the shoe.
"All the Charles bashing is so tasteless."
OMG. Someone actually is DEFENDING this man? Stop the presses. I think this is the second time EVER on this board that someone has taken up for him. Wow, he actually DOES have friend.
"He said that there 1-2" fell in Benton County. BS!"
Maybe he is estimating how much snow accumulation there MIGHT have been if it had actually stuck on the ground...lol
KHOG and KFSM typically use sensationalism when it comes to weather (or lack thereof) -- thank you KNWA for NOT having a reporter watching for a flake of snow Friday morning. THANK YOU!
NWA and Fort Smith have only two, maybe three, snow events a year. For people from elsewhere who are used to snow, it is hard to understand, but for locals it is a big deal.
I watched a little of both stations on Friday morning and didn't see either over-hyping it. KFSM had 2 people out checking traffic conditions, KHOG had one. That isn't exactly going berzerk.
I thought it was a smart move by Lewis to show up for the morning news. The first thing people do on a day like that is get up and click on the tube to see how bad it is going to be. Having the chief there looks good.
Can't speak as to Salser's forecasts since I didn't see them, but some of the comments here seem a little harsh. TV people rarely see things the way the viewers do, though.
Trust me if you know him personally or have ever worked around him, those comments are tame compared to what most would think or say about him.
so it was rational to have two reporters out for snow that barely fell from the sky -- let alone stick to the streets or ground??? comon' you people are trying to scare viewers into watching during sweeps for snow that WAS NOT causing harm.
"OMG" "OMG!!!" really? I think that says all you need to know about the intellect of this board.
I don't know if anyone actally listened to the reporters on KFSM or the weather guys... but they all said there were no travel problems, and none were really expected. How is that scaring people? Both Garrett and Brad continually pointed out temperatures were above freezing and accumulations would be difficult in most places. Doesn't sound so scary does it?
i prefer KFSM on mute anyway. or with the television off.
Pretty much how I like KHBS and KNWA. Much better when I can see them or hear them. Seeing that their way behind KFSM.
Pretty much how I like KHBS and KNWA. Much better when I can see them or hear them. Seeing that their way behind KFSM.
According to the above poster....since both KHBS & KNWA are both behind KFSM, maybe we should quit. No, on second thought, I'll use my extra time to lobby the local retirement homes and senior citizen centers to get the 70 and over crew to change thier nielsen diaries. Maybe that will help inflate our February numbers....and our egos
Okay 40/29 and KNWA, it is Saturday morning and it is really snowing. Where are you guys? Anyone home? All I see is KFSM live all over the place.
i'm surprised knwa wasn't out there all morning...kark kicked competition butt in little rock. i have to say kark hasn't been my favorite for awhile, but they're my newschannel now after seeing their dedication to viewers like me this am. I think they had like 5 or so reporters out...that's awesome. you know they all don't work weekends so that meant they were there on their off time!!!
way to go
kfsm are morons. they didn't even bother to find out what video they had just shot until they heard it on national news. sure they where at the right place at the right time, but they were going to keep that video with them until monday, when it wasn't news anymore. cbs paid someone to drive down and get it from them because they didn't want to leave from whatever bullshit they were shooting that weekend.
