ATN EXCLUSIVE- KARK Reporter on the Move; Staffers Not Happy With Replacement

An insider tells Arkansas TV News, KARK reporter Jason Friedman is on the move. The insider says Friedman will be leaving Channel 4 for a job in a top 30 market. The insider tells ATN, staffers are pissed at management's choice for Friedman's replacement. It is not known when Friedman's last day at KARK will be.

Friedman came to KARK-TV from KOAM-TV in Pittsburg, KS. Before graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Emory University in Atlanta, Jason interned at WLS-TV in Chicago and worked from the CNN Student Bureau.

I work at KARK...We are sad to see Jason go but excited about the opportunity he will have in Kansas City. As far as the new reporter who starts this week...the staff doesn't have any problem with him. He seems nice and should be a great asset for our station.

Yep Jason is a great loss for KARK. And who is the new reporter?

I work at KARK as well and yes, we are all sad to see Jason go but realize he's certainly more than prepared to move up to a bigger and better market. As far as the new reporter is concerned, he appeared to be adequate enough. Some of us did prefer the other candidate though. But, we'll be okay. We're certainly not pissed off however. Instead, I think some of us are just annoyed with Rick. I am a friend of Rick's and have been for quite a while now. He's a good guy but he's average at best when it comes to being a news director. Our news director has really been and remains to this day, Jeff Whatley. While it's not going to happen, many of us would like to see Jeff step up to Rick's position. What annoyed me is the fact that Rick should not be choosing any reporter at this moment to replace Jason. This decision should ultimately be up to Jeff and the new news director coming in. With Rick leaving, I think it's a horrible idea for him to have any management decision of this nature made while in the final days of leaving. It's not ethical and it's wrong. Rick's not leaving on good terms, no matter what the impression given is. He's leaving because he is not going to be given the general manager position, a position he's wanted and from what many of us have heard, demanded of nextar. So, he quits. That's his choice. But, some of us feel that Rick's decisions in the final days are subject to question, including the new reporter. He's certainly capable but to me, he wasn't that impressive. I really wonder if Rick's setting us up to fail, which wouldn't be hard to do being that we've been dead last in the ratings under him now for years.

Its sad that someone in our news room would actually blame Rick Iler for the ratings. That is so unfair.

While our competition always promotes their talent and product, KARK hasn't had a hardworking Promotions Director in years.

Our product and people are excellence, but we can't do it by ourselves.

I can't believe you just called yourself a "friend" check yourself man....If anyone blames anyone it would surly be Promotions, everyone knows that this is a weakness at KARK...Best of luck to you Rick...you work hard and most of us here in the newsroom see that!

With a friend like yours who needs enemies? I hope Rick has better friends than you. I work at KARK as well and I think you are full of S**t! Let me start by saying Rick had already hired the reporter before he made his announcement. Also, had you been in his staff meeting on Friday he told the staff that he would not make any station decisions and that everything should go through Jeff. Speaking of Jeff I will agree he does a great job running the day-to-day but he is not ready to run our news department as a whole. Being a News Director is more than just the day-to-day. Rick is a lot of things but average he is not. He is one of the best News Directors and people I know. I know some people don’t like him (He is there boss!) but there are a lot of people in the newsroom that do like him and respect him. I do know this he has done so much for this station and I am going to miss him. People like you need to work for a guy like Al S. then you will know what a bad News Director is!!! By the way he didn’t quit! He is moving on and who can blame him… Nexstar is a crappy company and they pushed him to his limits (no AP, no Nielsen, and off cable at the end of the year. I think you are an ex-employee that is just piss at Rick Iler. No one is really pissed in the newsroom about the new reporter. What we should be focused on is saying goodbye to a great reporter like Jason. Thanks for everything!

Hey all, I work for Rick as well and I'm sorry to see Jason leave. As for Rick, I also think he's a great guy but he's average at best as a news director.

Yes, Nexstar is a lousy company to work for and yet, we all continue to work there, don't we. Without AP, Nielsen and what's left to come, it's amazing we're still turning out the product we do.

But, don't get those facts get in the way of reality. First, let me start by saying I also was at the
staff meeting last week and simply because Rick says he had already hired the new reporter before making his announcement means absolutely nothing.

Rick's been looking for a new job for the past few months. Are you that ignorant not to know this? Simply because he announces that future decisions should go through Jeff is outrageous. Rick knew he was leaving before last week. Anyone who knows Rick knows that he was not going to put up with getting passed over on the gm position after Perry left.

This doesn't change the fact that the other staffer raises regarding Rick's decision to hire anyone. Rick should not have hired anyone and should have left that up to Jeff or his new replacement. I don't trust Rick. He got passed over which is the only reason he's leaving. Hey, as far as Phoenix hiring him to be an assistant is great for Rick. It's obviously a good financial move for him.

But, that doesn't change the fact that no matter what you want to believe, Rick is leaving on anything but friendly terms. He got PASSED OVER! Get it?

As for the new reporter, he appears to be a nice guy. I think and so do some others that the other guy was far better in his background. But, that's the news director's decision to make, not ours.

But, Rick should not have made that decision either way. He was and is leaving and for him to bring in anyone to replace such an important position as Jason's is insulting. This is simply a fact of good news judgement, nothing else. If you don't realize this, then, it's too bad.

Rick, we know you're reading this, especially after newsblues wrote that you begged them not to mention the fact that you were interviewing elsewhere just in case it jeopardized your hiring there.

You should be ashamed for doing such a poor job at salvaging us. If you really cared and really wanted to make a statement, you would have long ago b--ched to Nexstar about the lack of AP and Nielsen, etc and resigned over it. You've got absolutely no backbone. You do take credit for the awards we received when you played little part in it. In fact, the only thing Christian about you, is your kid's name.

Good luck in Phoenix. Now, you're their problem and I'm sure you won't last as long there as you did here.

Anyone care to post the name of the reporter hired to take Jason's place?

I think this is the same person that posted earlier this morning... What does being a Christian have to do with anything. Rick did stand up for the station when it came to AP and he almost lost his job because of it... Stop being so bitter and move on!!! Make room for the new Reporter and News Director. Phoenix is lucky to have him. I think he did a great job with us.

P.S. Rick has never took credit for any awards or anything he has done for the station. Did you not read the Arkansas Business article?

Hummm...Katie are you just pissed that Rick passed you up for Jason's position?????????????

I work for Rick also and I have to say that things are 100% better than they were 4 years ago and I disagree about him taking credit for the sations awards...every time I have ever heard him talk to us about them he always says "WE" did this...can not remember him ever saying "I" did this...are you (the above negative poster) ever present in our meetings? And since when religion become a factor in our newsroom? Good luck in Phoenix Rick!

Wow... You guys are so stupid... So the ND hired a person knowing he was leaving. Does an anchor stop anchoring when they are looking for a job? Does a reporter stop reporting when they are looking for a job? Better yet do you stop working when you are looking for a job? Poor guy, he hasn't even started and everyone is crapping on him. Good Luck!!!

I work for THV and I have to say I’m glad your ND is leaving... You have to give him some credit... I hope that the KARK employees don’t think all the good things that have happened over the last few years had nothing to do with Rick Iler. I don’t know this guy but I sure know what your station looked like before he got there! Plus didn’t he hire Jason? Better yet didn’t he hire most of you? What really cracks me up all you people that are bad mouthing him would jump at the chance to work for him in Phoenix if he asked... I promise you that both KATV and THV hope they hire a guy like good old AL or Ginger. That would make you guys #1.

I agree with the above... Rick did a good job. Hope some you realize that the next guy could be a lot worse than the guy you have now.

I think it's safe to say, Rick was and still appears to be, a very polarizing force not only in the newsroom at KARK, but outside. Does that make him successful? Is that a good thing for a television station and does that foster a "teamwork" atmosphere? You have to be the judge. Will that make him successful in Phoenix? Time will tell.

I think it's safe to say, Rick is anything but polarizing. He does a great job. We will miss him.

Too much politics... too little work. Viewers don't care what's going on behind the scenes... they just want quality work.

With the exception of a few people, KARK staffers are comfortable with sub-standards work. They are just happy Fox and WB are in town so they won't be last.

Bob and Jancey can't rescue KARK by themselves, although, they're the best talent there.

A News Director's job is to hire talent. Even if he is leaving, it doesn't mean he can't do his job. Should he just go home the day he gives notice? If a photog gets a job in another market can he not shoot another story?

My thought is they should have looked at some of the Fox reporters across town. A lot of young talent up and coming there.

Jennifer Akers is the only decent reporter talent at Fox.
