Another Reporter Leaving KATV

The bleeding continues at KATV/Channel 7/Little Rock.  We hear multi-media journalist Katharina Yancy is leaving KATV.  A tipster tells us Yancy is leaving for the new Soul of the South Network as a multi media journalist.

Apparently we have done enough beatings! Morale better improve soon or none of you minions will be able to sit down for a month!

There are others to come. We hear more producers want to leave. Positions are not being filled. We can't count the number of openings. Help us...please.

At 8:23 AM, April 02, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Producer openings don't mean much. Anchors should be able to produce their own shows in a pinch.

I have a friend at Soul of the South. A few months ago she told me producers make $40, MMJs make more and the anchors will be paid a real anchor salary.

I don't think the shows are on the air yet.

Good for Kat. She is a hard worker who doesn't expect special treatment.

Wow, how many KATV people left last month? Funny. Little Channel Seven is like big Good Morning America. Number 1, but everyone on the inside wants out.

It isn't paradise and corporations don't care how they treat people or how they pay people.

Will musical chairs hurt KATV ratings?

I think as long as they don't hire all college kids like THV 11 did a few years back, they still have a dog in the fight.

With respect and apologies to Katharina, I hope that network fails. It seems predicated on a very tired, bigoted and racist idea – that white people need their networks and black people need their own.

There of course are no "white" networks, even if we admit that 30 years ago many mainstream media outlets seemed more that way. But if start-ups like this one keep happening, what's to stop a "white interest" network from happening? Sooner or later more white people are going to realize they are the only ones without a conference to go to anymore, and that just might trigger the rebirth of the older ones that people don't have a very positive image of these days.

Think about that before accepting this segregated attitude.

KATV has had producer openings, going on a year. They want a seasoned producer but don't want to pay them. I lost count of how many producers and web managers have come in for interviews. The 3 morning show producers are taking turns on the 11:30, 5,6 and 10.

Current producers refuse to sign contracts the station is now putting them under. They will leave too.

7:26 AM, yes, we need help!

At 10:36 AM, April 02, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I wonder if any of this will spill into the May ratings. At this point I doubt it; ratings inertia takes a while to slow down, and KATV has been at full speed in that area for a while. Since it now looks more like Sinclair won't take over until later this summer, maybe the two elephants in the room will appear together.

At 10:50 AM, April 02, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@8:23 "should" is the operative word there. I don't think any of the current anchors "would" do it though.

At 11:38 AM, April 02, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

A certain reporters doesn't impact ratings. Like 9:31 said, when Channel 11 hired all green talent, that hurt them. Viewers get used to anchors and most people watch for weather. I don't think these changes will hurt Channel 7, I just think that you can't stay number one forever. Christina was with them for about a decade. I wonder how many people have called and emailed about her.

When does Denise Middleton start as the new evening anchor at THV?

At 1:38 PM, April 02, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Is Soul of the South considered network? Is that how she is able to work at a station located in the state? That is pretty cool.

At 1:59 PM, April 02, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's in 30 television markets, so yes that would be a network.

At 3:14 PM, April 02, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

What happened with Channel Seven suing Christina Munoz? Any truth to that?

At 3:25 PM, April 02, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If Soul of the South pays a producer 40k, that's a lot more than a reporter in Little Rock makes. I know producers at THV11 making in the 20k. I think low salaries for reporters, photogs and producers are the norm in this market.

I hope KATV plans on hiring some more Latinos. We are the largest minority group in the US, and we deserve adequate representation.

At 4:05 PM, April 02, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I would slow down on the whole everyone wants to leave KATV. Just about every on air reporter who left did so for a better on air job. When you have decent reporters they will leave...that is just the way it is.

At 4:17 PM, April 02, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I sure hope they hire some good white reporters. White people are the largest majority in the United States and I feel like we need good representation.

3:34, I remember seeing Jocelyn Tovar's social media announcement recently, saying she was leaving Channel 4 or 16. I think she is latina. What are the odds of all of them leaving within weeks of each other

Justin Lewis is arrogant. Who hasn't heard him walking through the halls screaming, "60 more days"? He is the same person who on-air said it was a lifelong dream to work at KATV. Reality must have set in quickly.

At 4:31 PM, April 02, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

There have been a few emails and phone calls about Christina but that is it kinda surprising

At 4:57 PM, April 02, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well I don't work at KATV or know Justin personally, but I want to know what "60 more days" means.

Morale will not improve until people get paid better.

Speaking of morale, how does Beth Hunt like the new evening gig? I don't know when she is due, but I can tell she is getting bigger. She looks good. She must be real tired by the end of the night. Does she have other kids?

I have seen Janelle Lilley on the KATV Midday show a lot lately. Is that her new position, in addition to the Saturday and Sunday morning shows? Seems like management is putting all their eggs in one basket.

At 7:23 PM, April 02, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

How many producers is KATV down? Who is the e.p.? Or is the n.d. not able to find them?

At 4:04 AM, April 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Katherina is not black,is she? Isn't this a black station? Maybe I am just confused. I heard she left kthv because she no longer wanted to be an mmj. Isn't that what this new position would be? Something sounds skewed.624

Are they going away any time soon?

At 8:12 AM, April 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Kat left KTHV because her contract was up and the way she was treated. She will tell you, when she desperate needed help, they wouldn't give her a photog. Her husband worked there and he told her she couldn't resign, it was too stressful. She left at the same time of a mass exodus. I hear she mmjd at KATV when she wanted.

At 8:35 AM, April 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@404: Kathatina's ethnicity is Latino, and her race is multi-racial as is all Latinos.

At 8:41 AM, April 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@6:32, I would not put it past them to hire white talent. If this is "network" I am guessing they have hours and hours to fill.
@1:59, Katherina must be doing some traveling if it is in 30 markets. Or is she moving to a larger state?

At 9:04 AM, April 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

8:12 gave a legitimate reason for why Kat left THV11, why did Alyson Courtney follow Kat a few weeks later? Money?

Alyson's husband must have set out for 6 months before moving to Fox.
How was she able to move from a main anchor at THV11 to the same position at KATV without legal consequences?

At 9:05 AM, April 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't work in LR TV but I find it interesting that two posts about a KATV reporter leaving both generate more than 30 comments. A post about two Fox/NBC reporters leaving generates 3 posts. Seems like everyone is obsessed with 7. Same as it ever was in this town...

At 10:01 AM, April 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@9:05 I think this post is generating a conversation. Most comments are not even related to the title. What I am pleasantly surprised about is that the nasty comments are hard to find on any recent post.

At 10:22 AM, April 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

When you look around the newsroom at KATV, you see a lot of band-aids put on personnel issues. Key people who left on and off-air are not being replaced in any timely manner. In some cases, what we thought were "just for now" solutions seem to be permanent. In many cases this has meant one person doing the job of two people, which is fine for a little while, but it's leading to even more turnover because they don't want to put up with it anymore.

At 1:47 PM, April 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Question about what the person above wrote, will Sinclair come in and fill positions? Or try and trim even more? I am not familiar with news stations being purchased.

At 2:30 PM, April 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No one knows the answer to that, of course, but anyone who knows anything about Sinclair knows they love to trim trim trim.

At 4:34 PM, April 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Does anyone even know if the purchase is a done deal or if it will fall through? (I thought the transaction happened last year.)

At 6:35 AM, April 04, 2014, Anonymous Older than dirt said...

Producers? Anchors? MMJs? Photogs? Reporters?
Guess what?

Ned will come in and do the weather, sports will cover the Razorbacks, Pat and Vanna will give away some cash and prizes, Mammaw will stay regular, the advertisers will keep writing checks and KATV will continue with this butt kicking formula like they have for the past 25+ years with some other new rising star who has seen their predecessors use KATV as a launching pad to a major market.

At 8:45 AM, April 04, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Guess what? Mammaw died last year, no one knows or cares who Ned is anymore, and KARK covers the Razorbacks more comprehensively than KATV ever could.

Those factors coupled with the Sinclair takeover spell the end of the dominance. It will take a while, but it's around the corner.

At 10:28 AM, April 04, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

8:45, have you ever even looked at a rating book? KATV has been gaining more viewers every book for the past 3 years. I've heard the doom and gloom coming at 4th and Main since forever. Hasn't happened yet. Keep dreaming.

At 10:58 AM, April 04, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

THV is getting back in the game. Denise Middleton is a good addition. They are also sending photogs out with MMJs more often. They need a back up sports person.

At 11:49 AM, April 04, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KATV'rs keep talking about rating books like the good ones come stuffed with tooth fairy money. Success is measured in dollar signs not smiley-faces. Yes, the books have been good lately for KATV. They were on the decline until a few years ago though. How do you explain that?

The books are a good measure of how you are doing, but they are not what is really important. Profits are what matter to stations and ultimately to your paycheck too.

If you are so great, why do people keep leaving for better paying jobs? Why do your staffers complain about positions not getting filled or eliminated? If you had the money to offer, people would stay and positions would get filled faster. That is simple economics. So pat yourself on the back if you want to get paid in smiley faces – it looks like that is all you are really getting.

Sinclair knows all about the triviality of books and ratings. They practically invented the whole concept of ignoring them. The only constant is change, and things are about to change.

At 5:21 PM, April 04, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

How accurate are ratings?I thought each city or county only got a handful, literally, a hand full of "books". That can not be a good sampling.

At 8:29 PM, April 04, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's not good. It's just what we have. All stations have to agree to a metered market, and KATV would never do that unless they had no choice.

At 8:09 AM, April 05, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's a good thing Thirsday night was not in a book. The effort or lack of to cover weather was bad.

That sounds like a management problem. Who was in charge?

At 8:20 AM, April 05, 2014, Anonymous Dear Abby said...

Wow! There are a bunch of petty behind the scenes people on this blog. Is there a NASCAR blog where the jack man and the tire changer complain about how the driver gets more money, sex, fame and glory while they do the dirty work to make the driver look good?

If you don't like your job, do everyone a favor and get a new job.

At 8:38 AM, April 05, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Behind the scenes people? Where are you getting that from?

At 9:33 AM, April 05, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@8:20 do everyone a favor and don't anger the people who do the dirty work. We cannot afford to lose anyone else. It's already getting bad for us on air people, and management can't find quality people to replace those who have left.

At 1:58 PM, April 05, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Uh, let's not get rid of people doing dirty work. They are hard to find, and are worth way more money than they get.

Nielsen ratings are not very scientific. The sample size is too small and the measurements are stuck in the 1950's.

What happens during negotiations when contracts are up? Is there such a thing as "negotiating" or does management say you must take 1% or leave? I just wonder why salaries are so low. Is it like that at every station?

As a viewer, it is a comfort thing. It isn't about reporters. Plus you don't know what stories all the other stations are covering that might actually be more relevant to you . It's about the anchors you like and the meteorologist during severe weather. Christina Munoz will be missed. When Beth goes on maternity leave, how long will she be gone? Will KATV do what theyre doing with Mallory Brooks and have several people take turns? Mallory has been gone a long time.

I completely disagree. Denise looks too young on the desk with others. Ashley has work to do but she fits in with the group. I like Denise but other changes need to be done around her.

At 6:55 AM, April 08, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I like Denise, and I think she's a good fit at THV. Is her husband, Brandon Middleton still playing in the NFL? I remember him from playing with the St. Louis Rams; he was a pretty good wide receiver but I haven't kept up with his career after leaving Rams.

At 8:29 AM, April 08, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

According to Denise's husbands wiki, he is unemployed. Guess she is the big breadwinner now.

@8:29 The Middleton's moved here weeks ago. They obviously made the decision to move for her career. Maybe he is starting a business or has plans we dont know about.
