Shreveport Reporter Arrested

KTBS/Channel 3/Shreveport reporter Eric James was arrested Friday afternoon obscenity charges.  KSLA reports James was arrested in Hamel park along with another Shreveport man.  No specifics are being released as police continue the investigation.  James was Channel 3' education reporter.

Station management had this to say: "We have heard the report of his arrest. We are in the process of gathering more information and investigating the matter. In the meantime, Eric James has been placed on administrative leave."

Somebody should seriously consider buying Hamel's Park. That should be the new dog park or put a church there. Those grounds need a exorcism....

At 11:44 AM, September 29, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Not gonna happen 11:19 PM.
The Marie and Charles Hamel Park can not be sold. If the city does not maintain it as a park, the land, and all improvements there on, revert back to the Hamel family. That provision of the agreement was cited when Hazel Beard refused to reopen the park after the flood in 1990 or 91.

If any place needs an exorcism it's Southern Hills. All those swingers swapping spouses on Friday and Saturday nights, then sitting in Calvary and Summer Grove on Sunday morning? Oh please.

Hamel's Park has always been a problem for this type of activity for decades. One weekend my family was having an impromptu picnic at this location and we were surprised to find police were hiding up the "Elephant Grave Mound" peering through binoculars at men in the parking lot. An officer told me that this parking lot is where men would come cruising for sex. It's been in the news on & off for years yet nothing has really changed. And you'd think the men who participate in this type of thing would know that they increase their chances of arrest quite a bit by doing this. Why don't they troll the web and find their play-partners there? Must be an adrenaline rush to risk getting caught in public. That's all I could figure.

At 9:09 PM, October 01, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Question:

If homosexuals don't recruit new members, how do they multiply?

At 8:12 AM, October 03, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@9:58, your multiply question is trollish but I'll entertain.

Each child born after the 1st is exposed to hormones from the mother at an abnormal time possibly increasing the likelyhood of the child preferring a samesex relationship. I've read the odds go up 30% each birth. Also, it isn't necessarily either homosexual or heterosexual. We all fall in to a spectrum, for instance I am 10% homo and 90% hetero while my 2nd born brother is 10% hetero 90% homo. Serious problems occur for the homophobes that are born with a 50/50ish ratio. That fear+desire causes a lot of harm to the individual or others. Roughly 450 species participate in homosexuality, only 1 one is homophobic.

Does anyone know if Eric James - Cox has left Shreveport yet? It would seem virtually impossible for him to work in this area anymore, unless he gets a non-journalist job like Chris Redford did.

No, Eric has not left Shreveport. Why would he stay? Why should any of us stay?

Not all broadcasters featured in the threads of this blog have been hindered in their careers by their various incidents and run-ins with the law. Some are still working in broadcasting in other markets around the country. While others have moved on to different careers here in the ArkLaTex, and in other areas of the country. Those of us who chose to move on to other careers are much happier personally and professionally. We are also making a lot more money then we ever made in broadcasting. This situation is not as bad as some make it out. Eric will be just fine.

While it might be deviant behavior, I don't think that getting a sexual favor from another male makes a person so-called "gay". However, the man who performs the sexual favor is homosexual to some extent on the Kinsey scale. But none of this should be happening in public. I don't know if the police out there trying to entice this behavior, in order to arrest people, is a deterrent or a catalyst of it.

Chris Redford has tried to go to work in law enforcement. He has been turned away several places. They won't take him because of mental illness issues. He is not the best example to use here.

9:05, as a straight woman, may I just say that I myself would consider any man who has had, is having, or even THINKS about having sex with other men, to be gay. Human sexuality is complex, to be sure, but come on. Sooner or later one preference is going to win out, and hopefully it won't be after the guy is married with two kids.

Whatever happened to the former newsman at KSLA who got arrested in a Caddo Sheriff's sting for allegedly arranging online to meet a 16 yr old girl at a casino for sex?
Seems like that's been months ago and no update.

As for Redford, apparently the guy has a strong need for attention as he seems to have a habit of too much sharing about himself online.
I've heard that he likes to vent a lot about everything that irritates him from rude people to dumb drivers to whatever. Sounds like he could use some meds.

At 12:05 PM, October 04, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@11:21 AM

Being in TV is not that important. All broadcasters leave regardless of seniority. That is the reality of the industry. Some stations are more volatile then others, and have a much higher turnover. Besides, there are more former broadcasters then current broadcasters. Enough to fully double staff every position at every station in the country.

As a journalist the point I'd like to make is "we are human too!" However choosing this career means knowing we'll be scrutinized beyond belief for what we look like, what we eat, what we drink, what we say, who we are seen with, where we are seen... etc. When journalists are caught doing something illegal, other journalists have an obligation to continue doing their jobs and report that news. However, journalists are also judging other journalists for all the things listed above and we tend to be the FIRST to pounce because let's face it folks... WE EAT OUR OWN. Its sad I guess, but it's the truth. And the first to know that should ALWAYS are journalists. Those who want to complain should just get out of the field. There are always a hundred (or more) others who would gladly take their spot on TV.

At 11:05 AM, October 16, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

They get a failing reporter to report on the failing schools in Caddo Parish.

At 11:57 AM, October 16, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No 8:31 AM, it's not. Stations have always had reporters who will specialize in one area or another. Areas like consumer affaires, crime, education, human interest, politics, religion, travel, ect...

For example, at KTBS anything to do with human interest and/or religion goes to Rick Rowe. Anything to do with education went to Gwen Campbell. It has been like this locally for over 30 years.

At 7:26 PM, October 16, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Before Gwen left 3 to work as Mayor Glover's PR person, there was grumbling about how she handled stories involving the then Caddo Parish School Board. First off, Gwen had legendary status as never being able to put together a short package and instead her education reports were in-cred-i-bly LOOOOonnGG and didn't merit as much airtime, often bumping other stories. I know 'cuz I'd hear directories & producers cuss about having to adjust on the fly to meet airtime. But the thing was Gwen purportedly had a pretty "serious friendship" with then CPSB Superintendent Ollie Tyler as any story on the school system seemed to always favor Tyler, there was very little objectivity.
The same thing pretty much happened when Jan Elkins filled in as education reporter... more of the same and it was often a headscratcher as to why sooo many times the lead story would be a long-winded piece with standups outside the CPSB Bldg on Midway Ave. The first 2 or 3 minutes of the 6 o'clock would be this nonsense...you could almost hear the TV remotes clicking in unison all over Shreveport-Bossier.
The simple fact is/was that KTBS had a history of hiring folks who were marginal reporters at best and never had much ambition beyond showing up for work and getting a bi-weekly paycheck. The corporate culture at KTBS was and still is something of can't see the woods for the trees as the only thing that matters is the spreadsheet, monthly flash reports and quarterly earnings. As long as the Wrays still get their envelope with their anticipated earnings, it has (and never will) change. That's why KTBS stands for:

Keeps
Taking
Big
Sucks

Does anyone know how many people have come and gone from KTBS, and the other stations, over the past 10-15 years? Not just the on-air personnel, but everyone.

At 4:55 PM, October 18, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KTBS used to be a place where the staff stayed forever until they made too much money and management would force them out by no longer putting up with their egos (Baswell, Pierce, Swaine come to mind).

But since the great lay-off on May 1st 2009, (15 at once) the number of people who've either left or been fired could probably come close to the total number working there today.

At 12:25 PM, October 22, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That few? I'm sure the actual numbers are higher then that.

Today at lunch a friend casually mentioned he heard about KTBS reporter getting arrested for exposing himself to an undercover cop. She went on to say: "KTBS seems to keep hiring weirdos with all kinds of issues." referring to a story about a KTBS reporter exposing himself in a movie theater and another for some sort of stalking. Is this true? If so then whoever hires reporters must really not pick up on things too well. The other stations don't seem to have near as much drama as KTBS does with employees.

At 12:52 AM, October 24, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No, that's not true. KTAL had the morning show met and a reporter arrested by SPD for DWI. A reporter and a director were ticketed by the Monroe PD for having less then half a joint in their car. A producer snorting coke in the restroom a month or two after returning from rehad that the company paid for. Then there's Michelle White's "issues."

KSLA's big "issue" was the GM Ed Bradley. He must've had one helluva lawyer to stay employed with all the funny biz he was involved in. Just ask any former female employee who was there during that time. What a piece of work!

At 12:48 PM, October 25, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

A good lawyer, or bosses in Montgomery who don't care as long as it doesn't effect their ratings or revenue.

@10:43 AM
The numbers are in the hundreds for all the local stations. As with any market some stations have a much higher turnover then others. KTBS and KSLA use to be very stable stations, with very few openings each year. However, those days are long gone. KMSS/KSHV, had the highest turnover I have ever seen. During the three years I worked there we had 2 general managers, 3 chief engineers, 4 promotions managers, 12 promotions producers, 33 master control operators, and about as many account executives. In January 2001 we mailed out 52 W-2's to people who no longer worked there. At that time KMSS/KSHV had 54 positions.

At 2:00 PM, October 25, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

8:37 PM, October 23, 2013 KTBS does need to be more careful on their hires. They should have seen potential problems with Eric James from the start. Chris Redford did not get fired for stalking. He accused a well known businessman of stalking him, as if anyone would believe that. Now he can't find a job in news or anywhere else. As for Eric James, who knows. It sucks to be either of them.

At 2:02 PM, October 25, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KMSS/KSHV was a nightmare to work for and even was a joke if you were a client. GM Lanham acted as if he was on meds for paranoid-schizophrenia and his replacement Suggs was a religious psychopath. Senior staffers in sales were disconnected, self-centered C___suckers who only cared about their commissions and would screw you over to make sure they got what they wanted. The place was full of crooks and theives. I was amazed at how much the station paid for personal purchases like groceries, gas, you name it. It was a den of thieves and the corporate douches never seemed to care what happened in that bldg. just as long as they got their nut. What a dump!

At 2:11 PM, October 25, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

While it's true that the other stations have had folks get canned for DWI or substance abuse issues, it seems however that KTBS takes the prize for folks with bizzarro sexual proclivities. A big difference between someone getting buzzed versus someone whipping out their junk in public. I recall hearing years ago that a former KTBS weathercaster had to take his boyfriend to the ER to get a gerbil removed from his body cavity. I heard this story several times and there was another KTBS staffer who wound up needing a coke-bottle extracted. And this was years ago. I've yet to hear anything like that coming from the other stations except for KSLA's Ed Bradley allegedly banging a news anchor on the side of the highway one night and getting caught by a sheriff's deputy. Maybe KTBS should have a hamster as a station mascot! LoL!

That's ancient news we've know about since the 80's. There are so many variations of that story it's turned in to an urban legend.

KSLA's had more then Ed Bradley sexcapades. Sylvia Rachel and Al Bolton had a long term affair. They were caught in a drug and prostitution sting at the hotel they were hooking up in. That was hushed up and did not make the news. Then there was a pre-Scott, pre-trainwreak Sheri Warren and her long time girlfriend Marla. That to was hushed up also.

Not sure what anyone means when they say that Shari Warren & her girlfriend Marla's relationship was "hushed up"...it was simply "ignored" and no one at KSLA really cared one way or another. I seriously doubt their relationship was all too well known outside the station back in those days. But I betcha if Shari contacted the producers of "The Governor's Wife" she could make for an interesting side-story bringing up her past deeds with Fast Eddie!

That's a safe bet 'cuz as we all know, anyone with any ambition or sense will mark their time, beef up the demo disc and start looking for a better gig.

Excluding legal/police issues, many of these new people do not last the full two years. Seems like a new face is popping up every week or two. But then again I do not watch local news every day like I use too.

Are there any numbers out there of how many people get out of the business? About 60-65% of the people I went to school with have moved on to other fields.

Tonight I had to listen to a couple news segments as I was waiting for a weather update. One story was a boring educational story on the newly appointed Caddo School Superintendent. The funny thing was that I noticed someone being interviewed but they were way out of focus and the wall was sharp as a tack. The thing is all stations hire people who can barely do one job like reporting news but they also need to run camcorder, lights and microphone. There's so much crap that gets on-air because they can't do their jobs worth a damn. They'll probably get tired of the BS and wind up leaving the biz or moving on to another situation. As long as they can string together a demo video of their best work...they'll get hired somewhere else maybe. But locally our news reporting talent is pretty bad. It's quite reflective of the lack of sophistication in the Shreveport-Bossier market. It's been getting worse and worse every year.

@1:55 PM

I'm not sure if there are any studies or surveys, but the numbers a very high. Around 30% of the people I went to school with, and worked with in various markets over the past 30 years, are still in broadcasting today.

As long as J-school grads major in hairspray, make-up, sound-bites and prompter-reading; nothing will change. So-called Video-Journalists is a misnomer. Even with smaller, lighter gear, the reporters still are merely news mannequins with stars in their eyes hoping to be the next Oprah, Shepard Smith or Susan Hendricks. They have no interest in "Photo-Journalism" which is the skill of telling news stories by pictures / video. The stations do very little to train these neophytes and it shows.
And so it goes.

I dunno about the sports guy but having worked at KTBS in the past, I can tell you that some of the gals who worked there (and one who still does) could probably pee standing up!

U must mean Jan, Liz, Warren, who else? Am I hot? Always thought one was dressed in drag, the other a Jane Lynch wannabe and the third, Winona on steroids.
