Shreveport Station in Retrans Spat with Dish

Ah yea, the end of another quarter means retransmission agreements are ending for a lot of cable companies/sat providers.  KSLA/Channel 12/Shreveport is warning its viewers it may not be available come tomorrow on Dish Network.  One has to love how it all works out in the end though.

This Dish thing is the same for KAIT in Jonesboro. In fact, for other if not all Raycom Media stations.

It's a Raycom v. Dish Network thing, so all Raycom owned stations will be effected.

I'm sure there will be an agreement otherwise their ratings will be reduced due to satellite dish owners with diaries not reporting KSLA.

Just keep an antenna on hand and you won't miss a beat. Also comes in handy when cable is out. You wouldn't believe the people who have commented to me about missing a favorite show because cable was out and I asked if they had an antenna for those times and their response was," you can do that ?"

There's a whole generation that has been raised on cable / satellite TV. The idea of over-the-air via antennae is as foreign to them as a hand-written letter.

While some will opt for OTA options, a majority will not and that will show as a drop in the Nielsens.

At 9:37 PM, August 01, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That is so true.

Nielsen is so flawed I don't know why we bother with them.

Why should Dish pay Raycom anything to carry their local stations signal? Raycom should be paying Dish.

At 12:42 PM, August 02, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Pay-for-Airplay argument has been that since networks cut back on affilate commissions for carriage, the affiliates feel that essential is a backward-payment to the nets for carriage of their programming...
--SO--
Affiliates feel the satellite companies should pay a per-subscriber royalty fee for the affiliates providing them access since they add value to the satellite service.
It's a bit like playing "who blinks first"

Just remember KTBS tried playing this game and for a few months wasn't carried by DISH and it started to bite them in the national ad sales because the ADI has a huge satellite user-base and the data was showing a drop in viewership...resulting a drop in ad dollars based on CPM, cume ratings...etc.

DISH is a national company and didn't blink from what I gather and the Wray family was pissed about losing revenue due to less eyeballs watching them. So they had to cut a deal. Same will probably happen with Raycom, they may sit it out until 2014 but I kind of doubt it.

Dear Anonymous Mr. Practicality:

Please be advised that many Ark-La-Tex citizens with "an antenna on hand" have missed and continue to miss countless "beats" because we live in geographical areas that render the "antenna on hand" inoperable.

In some parts of the Ark-La-Tex there is no such thing as a cable provider.--The Cable company rolled up their sagging cables, cut their poles just above ground, and ran out of town.

We are left with Dish Network, DirecTv, and a TV screen that states "searching for signal" when it drizzles.

Have a Great Day!

@ 6:08

So, what's your point ? Just like in the olden days......It doesn't matter if you're on cable, dish, direct tv or a damned garbage can lid with wires attached, just hook up an antenna and watch over the air channels. I'm sure your tv came with an owners manual........

At 9:49 PM, August 05, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

10:58 PM Thanks for your useless insightfulness. Viewers who live in the boon docks might ought to try attaching the wires to a "damned garbage can lid" because an antennae won't pick up the digital signal. If one lives 150 miles away, an antennae for over the air channels is worse than it was when Bob Griffin and Charles Pierce had afternoon shows for children due to the signal being digital instead of analog. Yes, each of my television sets came with an owner's manual, but the owner's manuals are incapable of boosting the over the air digital signal!

At 9:22 AM, August 06, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

One thing to consider is that since the HD/Digital transition, the HD signal requires more power to pump a signal over-the-air to the grade B & C contours (Boondocks & Country..lol). And knowing that GM's like to save money, thinking that only cable & satellite subs in those areas really matter... they cut back on the power to save money on their electric bill.
So even with an antennae, if you live in rural areas far from the transmitters, you may be out of luck if all you have is an antennae.

At 11:12 AM, August 06, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That's true, and if you've seen the electric bills you would understand why the GM's lower the power. Our electric bill averages $2,000 for the building and $16,000 for the transmitter.

At 1:30 PM, August 06, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KSLA already has lowered the power on their transmitter thus making it harder for many to receive it OTA. Compared to what others are broadcasting at...:
KTBS, KTAL, KMSS, KPXJ, -1000kw
KSHV-500kw
KSLA, KLTS-350kw

At 1:52 PM, August 06, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

OMG! The electric bill averaged $18,000?!?! That's more then some people make in a year.

You'd think the management bozos would do a solar-energy trade and get an energy tax credit. Those retards will cut back on things that actually provide vital services (like competent, trained people with experience). Something like this would be a no-brainer but I guess the GM's are too busy acting like they know it all to be practical.

At 12:14 AM, August 07, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That will no happen until solar-energy becomes a constant and reliable source of power, and the price is dramatically reduced.

It would be funny to see a tv tower with a windmill on top of it & solar panels stacked to the top.

Saw a FB post tonight by KSLA Anchor Pat Simon that Raycom & DISH have come to terms and KSLA will be back on DISH. Duh!

It will all be worked out and the show will go on as it always has. Cable bill will be going up.

I didn't really miss KSLA for the short period it was off Dish. Nothing but reruns of those series I usually watch or this dreadful reality BS programming. What I did discover is that KTAL's news is considerably better than KSLA's these days and I've adjusted my evening news watching time accordingly. That's probably a consequence Raycom and KSLA did not intend.

KSLA used to be a good station, but not in the past 10-15 years. You can thank the current and former management for this.

I miss the editorials by idjit Ed Bradley. Some were priceless peeks inside his self-absorbed psyche'. Talk about station-image buster. Even the black guys I worked with at that time would say: "Man the brutha' don't make no sense."

How true. Here is a prim example.
in the 90's the Telecommunications department at BPCC had this group called the "Telecommunications Advisory Board." This board would meet once a year to go over the curriculum and advise what the students needed to learn so they would be job ready. Ed Bradley from KSLA and George Servin from KTBS were on this board. As were Mike Whitehead from The Shreveport TImes, Betty Jo Le'Brun from the film commission, and several others were on this board. Ed Bradley was the only member of this board who never attended a single meeting. However, he did claim membership on this board in his personal and professional promotion.
The first year of this board meeting Ed had his secretary call in for him. The second year he didn't call, nor did he have his secretary call in for him. Ed did make an half ass apology to BPCC for not attending the meeting, that went out to the entire viewing area, in his next "Ed"itorial which aired later that week, or the following week. I will never forget how it started out. "Sometimes when people don't call that doesn't mean they're not busy doing important things." Ed's important things turned out to be losing the Shreveport mayoral race badly in the primary, getting divorced, losing the house in Southern Trace to foreclosure, and relocating to Dallas where he now makes a living selling cars.

Other mo' impo'tunt things were getting caught by cops while parking on the side of the hwy one night with KSLA news anchor Sharon Frame.
Woo hoo! And then there was a rumor about a KSLA sales-gal getting getting knocked up by Mr. "That's My View" Ed! Someone who used to work at KSLA told me enough about Mr. B's indiscretions that you wonder why Raycom kept him on as GM? They must've been writing a lot of checks to keep things quiet and out of court.

I remember hearing this from a co-worker who used to work there. Something about him being a little too forward with some female staff.
She said she left because he was pretty much getting away with it and corporate didn't seem to care too much.

At 10:55 AM, August 17, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh yeah, all that's true. That's the stuff Ed was caught doing. He got away with a lot more then that. Nice to know karma caught up to him.

I agree with the post about not missing KSLA. I watch all three stations in the morning's and I think it was about this time that Chrissi came back to 3 after baby-duty. She looks great! Love what she did with her hair! This means I will not be watching 12 anytime soon (their anchor... come on!) and as for KTAL they the second station I go to for news in the AM but when I do I really enjoy it. Seems like their team has fun together.

I have to agree with previous posters, I really don't miss not seeing local news all that much. I see they promote that they are on from 4AM to 8AM or something like that. I tuned in a few times and all I saw was continual weather updates and reruns of last night's stories. Mostly I recall a lot of network filler stories, hardly any local stuff. Local TV news is maybe 25% LOCAL NEWS, the rest is rehashed network or paid-content masquerading as "news". So I pretty much quit watching as it's such a waste of my time.

At 11:57 AM, August 24, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, that's pretty much it. It's designed to repeat every thirty minutes. The morning show producers come in around 10:30 to 11:00. Copy and paste the packages from the 10:00 the night before. Add in a few packages from network, and a live interview or two, and your done. That makes three hours of programming for KTBS/KPXJ. Two and a half hours for KSLA, and two hours for KTBS.

Morning Snooooze-casts. Aside from a quick check of the weather, there's really no other reason to watch and even at that I just want to see if it's going to have any rain chance.
Don't show me all your BS weather-toys. I can get all I want in 60 seconds or less if you dorks would quit screwing around with your toys.
