No news is good news huh... Well we find ourselves in sweeps period once again.  As I've said before all the special investigations..exclusives...and contests never surprise me.  One thing can be said I can't see the stations doing anything new to gain viewers.  I often wonder if the stations have done any surveys themselves to find out what viewers want...or even potential viewers.  Do viewers tune it for a specific anchor?...Do they tune in specifically for the news, weather, sports?  Or do they tune to a station because that's one they've always watched?  OR to win a brand new iPAD?  One thing is for certain I always look forward to sweeps being over. Why not just do news like you do in non sweeps months.

I can't tell you who does the most in-depth reporting or
the most local news or the most/best whatever. But I can tell you who has talking heads who annoy the hell out of me. Keep your iPads and give me somebody who doesn't make me cringe when I watch.

Television News, Weather and Sports is a big waste of time, electricity and salaries.

Want the News. Internet.
Want the Weather. Internet
Want the Sports. Internet
Want quiet in the house during that time. Internet

No prima donnas to have to watch and no yelling into the mic.

I tune in to see promo's of "Are Shreveport's local officials making the grade? We are gonna ask them questions." THAT'S YOUR JOB!!!
You made a PROMO to tell us that you are going to FINALLY do the only thing we really want you to do....FOR SWEEPS ONLY?
AND.... weather rate? What's that? Let's rate KTAL on accurate weather info...OK... YOU DONT HAVE A RADAR!! You can't look at ANY thunderstorm and tell me anything more than the National Weather Service. So shame on KTAL, and Todd Warren. YOU CAN'T and Don't Help anyone....really

Every month should be sweeps month, however, "sweeps" has become nothing more than gimmicks, giveaways and sensationalism instead of serious, in-depth reporting.
The desire and the drive for serious reporting is there among the boots on the ground but the higher-ups have no desire or drive for real news. All they care about is sales.

And that prevents the boots from doing serious reporting? That makes no sense.

The higher ups tend to shoot down controversial stories or stories that require in-depth research. The boots on the ground are scrambling to cover car crashes, murders, fires, day turn stories and often times have no time to dig deep for investigative stories. Case in point, the pipeline spill...none of the stations bothered to contract with an independent environmental engineering firm to find out exactly how much contamination the spill caused to the air, land and water...they reported instead what the oil company pr flack said or what some official said.

And no station will do a derogatory story on ANY sponsor.

That's true, however, it depends on the market your in. I've seen in-depth reports on advertisors in larger markets, and many of them were picked up by the networks, and went national.

Bet you never saw a story on Entergy's falilure to trim all the trees necessary to prevent power outages last Christmas. Hey, they spend a ton of money on the media. No bad press here and never will be.

It's this market. I've been in other markets where we did have stories critical of utility company's and other advertisers. Some retaliated but most did not.

Anytime anything is being given away in broadcasting it's go get viewers and listeners.

That's true, however, those viewers/listeners do not stay long term, nor does it doesn't always translate into an increased market share.

The lighting and camera used for the Weather Shack are pitiful. I would be ashamed to air such a product even if I were a high school tv class. Gannett, saving money every way possible.

You have been talking about the poor lighting in the weather shack for years. Just let it go or change the channel.

They have already "let it go." Did you design it. Sorry.

Viewers want a 15-minute news show. That's 7 minutes of news, 7 minutes of weather and one minute of sports. Wait, that's what it is now. Forgot the rest of the time is for commercials.

The station to start running only 3 commercials during the 30 minute show will own the ratings.

What good is ratings if you only have 3 ads?
