Man Attacks El Dorado Reporter

A KTVE/KARD/El Dorado/Monroe reporter was attacked Sunday night after leaving the studios in El Dorado.  The station says Brea Douglas was forced back into the building, held her down and showed a knife.  Two citizens heard the reporter screaming and came to help.  The station reports a suspect has been arrested and charged in the attack.

This sends chills up my spine. Was she targeted because she was a reporter?

Possibly, but it was more likely a crime of opportunity. She was alone in a building with no security.

In 2010, a gunman entered WSOC in Charlotte, NC. She held the people in side hostage. You would think TV stations would have better security. It is hard too believe stations would be so careless as to have so little security that their on air talent and other employees are at risk in the world we live in today.

How would we pay for this security? It would have to come out of someone's budget and would most likely come out of news.

It varies widely from station to station, but station security as a whole is minimal to non-existant. The worst example I've encountered was at a Nexstar. The garage door between the parking lot and the storage room was rarely locked. There weren't any security cameras on the door. Every night I would check that door and put the padlock on to prevent it from being opened from the outside. Our morning show producers, both females, worked 100 feet from those door. If someone had come in through that unsecured door I wouldn't have known anything until I heard their screems. Then there were two nights a week where I was the only one in the building.
This should be a wake up call to us, and to management as well.

Security is a capital improvement which falls under the capital improvement budget, not the news budget. This is a very serious situation, and every station should review and improve their security.

Good luck Brea! Don't let this get to you.

I used to be the El Dorado reporter several years ago. There is NO security for the reporter. I had to leave late at night sometimes completely alone. There was one sales guy that worked with me during the day, but he was gone at 5:00. After that, I was completely alone. I felt incredibly unsafe.

I know exactly how you feel. We used to have cameramen, but now we're alone and doing everything ourselves. Unfortunately it's only a matter of time before something like this happens again.

Is the reporter ok? Is she still working or has she resigned over this?

Thankful to say she is and will be fine. Everyone's prayers are much appreciated. God bless.

That's good to hear. Everyone needs to look more closely at security. Until something major is done I'll continue using my conceal carry license and not let anyone at the station know I'm packing.

Be blessed 10:21. If only I could be as successful as you are. I'll never be the amazing person with the fabulous career and beautiful family I'm sure you have (or threw away by having an affair), but I'm very happy.
If that makes me a washout, sign me up.
