Storms Blew Through...How Did the Storm Teams DO?

Well it was the first major severe weather outbreak in Arkansas for 2013 and I well...missed the coverage.  I was curious to see the KLRT/KARK "Arkansas Storm Team" in action...and the weather teams.  I am asking for your observations. Please post them in the comments section.

We bounced from station to station, but spent most of the night with KARK, followed by KATV then KTHV. All and all a good job. However, KARK news team/anchors needs to recognize if someone is over their head, do NOT drag it out. Hubert just didn't cut it in Botkinburg. He tried, looked and sounded scared, but just didn't know how to interview on the fly. Restating the answer that you were just given is not an interview. How many times can one say, "This is serious?"

Newswise KARK kicked everyone's butt. Only one's in Botkinburg early.

That's because "the weather team with the most experience" totally blew the forcast.

Watched Ned & Barry. Too much dead air on 11 with only Ed.

Perme fail.

I thought KARK/KLRT did a really nice job with the coverage. The early reports and pictures from Van Buren County helped them to win the night. KTHV was a non-factor - Buckner doesn't have what it takes to carry severe weather coverage alone. As previous poster -- too much awkward silence from him. KATV's coverage was disappointing. I expect more from them.

Discovered some really good shows on cable. Wall to wall weather coverage doesn't appeal to me. I can get alerts on the phone, take cover when necessary, and not have to listen to some weather head blabber on. I'd rather watch Matlock reruns.

At 10:54 AM, April 11, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

10:06 I did the same thing, and agree with everything you said, except for the Matlock reruns. Never did care for that show. That's filler programming.

There was severe weather last night?

At 11:10 AM, April 11, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I thought KARK/KLRT was impressive. And for someone to say the reporter they had at the beginning of the night didn't go a great job is crazy. That video was amazing!

KARK / KLRT set a new standard in the market place. Time to step it up KTHV & KATV. Here is the scary thing, if that is the new standard, that means KARK / KLRT must hit it out of the park every time... EVERY time.

At 11:39 AM, April 11, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KATV was lacking Todd Yakoubian who actually studies the weather & chases storms. It appeared to be more of a nuisance to Ned & Barry & it showed. They didn't miss Mayo in the weather center as all she does is read copy & smile...

At 11:59 AM, April 11, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Barry seemed generally into it. It didn't look like Ned cared at all. Maybe he's finally lost it.

At 12:03 PM, April 11, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think you hit it on the head right there. Apparently all Ned talked about all week was how it wasn't going to be anything and he just wanted to go on his vacation. I think they call that "wishcasting"

At 12:11 PM, April 11, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Take it from a long-time former KATV man - Ned cares about Ned. This is not a new thing. So the idea that he lost something probably isn't accurate. It's much more likely that he just wanted it to go away so he could go on vacation.

I too kept KARK/KLRT on all evening. Excellent weather coverage as well as the news live video. I also liked the Amateur Radio operator on set giving up to the second coverage from spotters...and the CAREN Skywarn Weather net. Two thumbs up to KARK/KLRT. No comment on the other two.

At 12:56 PM, April 11, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I didn't watch Ned. But from what I can tell here, he either didn't know or didn't care to tell anyone about where damage might be. Anyone with half a meteorology certificate could've said you might want to send some people to Van Buren County.

At 1:08 PM, April 11, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

This will be remembered as the event where 4/16 began to establish itself as the new leader in weather coverage.

At 11, Ed is boring and alone.

At 7, Ned is fat and lazy. And his team is powerless to help if he is in charge.

At 4/16, they are hungry, energetic, and knowledgeable. And it shows on air.

At 1:25 PM, April 11, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Katv should let Yakobian run severe weather since he has connections with storm spotters and does his own independent forecast not a forecast from Google like the others from KATV.

At 1:38 PM, April 11, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Agreed that KATV should utilize Todd Y more. He loves this stuff. KARK did a great job. I really like Keith M and he appears comfortable in sharing the spotlight and it shows. KTHV flat. I just couldn't watch Ed. On another note, the reporter from KARK in Botkinburg was trying the best he could, but just struggled. I noticed Today used some of their video, but not a second of him when in the past they would use the whole piece.

At 1:46 PM, April 11, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

True. Kark got there and got great vid early, but that reflects more on the photographer than the reporter.

At 1:55 PM, April 11, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Todd Y needs to go to KARK/KLRT. He'd fit in beautifully over there. Let's start the contract negotiations.

At 2:47 PM, April 11, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ha! Don't think Todd is going anywhere.

At 3:06 PM, April 11, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KARK has had great weather coverage for several years now. It's nothing new. Channel 7 just had a bad night. Channel 11 is just horrible at severe weather coverage.

At 4:05 PM, April 11, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KARK has had great weather coverage for years? Maybe so, but after the events following the Brett Cummins disaster no one has paid attention to them.

At 4:17 PM, April 11, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

OMG, we're so over that. Move on.

At 4:52 PM, April 11, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ned may have messed up badly, but it seems KATV's producers should share the blame.

KATV was doing regular news during the heat of it all. What were you thinking? People were tuned in for weather. They wanted to know if it was going to hit them. This is basic stuff.

But keep on making those brilliant decisions... you'll be knocked off your Wheel of Fortune pedestal soon enough.

At 6:32 PM, April 11, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Brilliant, just brilliant. Hey, how did those Feb ratings taste?

At 6:43 PM, April 11, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Just fine thanks. You can point to all you want. Stupid is as stupid does. The fact of the matter is your weather people, producers, and managers (paticularly whoever was on assignments) made very stupid decisions.

At 10:40 PM, April 11, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I am normally a KTHV fan, but I must say severe weather is not Ed's strong suit. I thought KARK won the night because of their great pictures, but I agree with another poster that the reporter on the scene was very, very weak--but the pictures were fantastic. I do think it was a little weird that KARK and KLRT have the exact same thing on at the same time....but that is not their fault. I did see a little KATV and thought they were probably second...but I think they did the best job today. The feature with Barry explaining stuff from the helicopter was really cool and informative.

4/16 went all the way to cover the storm. Only problem was the guy in Botkinburg that was acting like it was the end of the world. Like the female doing the coverage. Knows what she is doing. Best weather female in the market. Other stations will have to get with the program and spend some money to keep up with this new coverage that 4/16 has brought.

THV had too much dead air, audio wise.

Never watch KATV so can't comment.

At 10:51 PM, April 11, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I kept wondering if the guy that was covering the site where the red 18-wheeler had turned over was going to trip on the downed power lines and really give us a show.

Maybe if there are storms every day, then KARK/KLRT will move out of 3rd and 4th place.

At 8:07 AM, April 12, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That's not accurate. THV and KARK are very close but neither are getting close to KATV.

I say look for kark to move ahead of thv this may

At 9:53 AM, April 12, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You can blame KATV's producers if you want to, but they are looking to Ned for direction. Ned directed them poorly. He is the one who failed.

At 10:10 AM, April 12, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well considering how we all know KATV's producers are mostly KARK rejects (particularly Rachel "airhead" Gardner - or is it Hoffmeyer now? bahahah don't get me started on that idiot), it doesn't surprise us she made such a bonehead decision. She is notorious for flipping out for no reason and being self-concerned.

At 11:14 AM, April 12, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ned was only concerned about his vacation. It would have been more entertaining to have Todd lead the coverage with phone ins from his buddy Ninja chasing the storms. At least they didn't disturb Mayo & have her come in to just smile for the camera as they already had Christina to do that..,

At 11:27 AM, April 12, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You people that are surprised about Ned's reaction must be new. He has always been concerned with himself first.

THV's coverage was mininal. KARK/KLRT was okay. KATV was fine when Todd was on the set. Too much hype with Perme. Just sayin'

KARK has been number two at at 5:00for at least a couple years now. They have been basically tied with THV at 6:00 over the same time period.

ALLYSON! won the 103.7 The Buzz local babe bracket.

Really?

At 9:55 PM, April 12, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ned is not even a meteorologist. He has a "certificate" in weather - that's it. And he can't even pass the AMS seal of approval - even Melinda passed that! He just likes being on TV, getting paid well, and liquid dinner breaks every night. I worked at KATV for years and could never understand how he gets away with that all the time.

At 10:11 PM, April 12, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sarah Fortner should have won the Babe Bracket - but she's not KATV.

At 10:52 PM, April 12, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

As a viewer I agree with 4/16 doing the best job during the storms. I "tried" to watch the other 2 stations. 7 was okay and 11 as usual was unwatchable and I can't blame it this time on their unexperienced reporters.

4's live coverage of the aftermath of the storm was really great. I don't like to talk negative about people. That reporter really did a very poor job with his coverage. I found it very hard to listen to him. I was embarassed for just wanted him to stop talking and repeating the same words.

My question for 4 would be with so many weather people why would they not send one of them out. I think anyone of them could have done a better job. Even the new girl that does the weather.

At 9:49 AM, April 13, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Agree Sarah COULD have won... She should have been invited. However, its no secret that 103.7 the Bazz is all up in KATV, it's so obvious. But not surprised since they are media partners. I listen to the show and all of the hosts have disdain for the other local tv media, which is ok considering they are, well partners with KATV. Do us all a fovor and call it what it is, the KATV Babe bracket.

At 10:34 AM, April 13, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Agree with 10:52. I was cringing in my seat as well and just hoped the he would stop talking and that the anchors would quit asking him questions. With KARK/KLRT having such a big team, I think that's a great idea to assign one or two of them to be in the field during severe weather - pseudo storm chaser. That would be great. And I do agree, KARK had the best coverage - hands down.

At 1:25 PM, April 13, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

yeah, let's forget about journalism altogether and just focus on storm coverage and weather and who's the hottest babe on the air.

At 8:13 PM, April 13, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sarah didnt even make it through the first round in the babe bracket. Ouch

The Babe Bracket is rigged. Next year will be Janelle's turn to win.

At 8:35 PM, April 13, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Journalism? Who said anything about journalism? It is all about Mary Sue Fannie May sharing pictures of her 15 cats on Facebook.

At 10:27 PM, April 13, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Callers determine who wins the babe bracket, so it's not rigged. That said, the Buzz is a media partner with 7 so over the course of the year they talk much more about people like Melinda and Alyson than say Alyse. So in that way it is rigged.

At 4:34 AM, April 14, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Really, if you want hard hitting news, why objectify women with with a male teenage "Babe Bracket?" With all this complaining that local news is banal and no longer journalism, one has to wonder why these women think they can be taken seriously when they put themselves out their like this. Does Little Rock want news or the local version of Maxim Magazine.

What I want to know is do these women sign up to participate in this bracket, are they invited to the bracket and feel pressure to accept the invitation, or are they unknowingly placed in competiton without invitation and or consent?

At 1:45 PM, April 14, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

They are put in the bracket without consent. Most try to smile their way through it and laugh it off so they dont look like total B's, but I can tell you for a fact that many (maybe not all) don't appreciate it. Objectifying, masogynistic, rude...that's how I'd describe it.

At 1:48 PM, April 14, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Unknowingly placed in there. They don't sign up for it.

At 3:49 PM, April 14, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I would up chuck if Janelle won the Babe Bracket or worse participated in a 2014 media babe calendar. Two hours of Sat Daybreak each week is two hours too many for her...

Disgusting. I am no prude, but in this day when the workplace is almost overly concerned with sexual harrassment,I'm surprised the radio station does not fear a lawsuit. These women are professionals, and this is not professional behavior. I am also surprised the TV stations don't complain about this poor use of their talent. Perhaps the stations hope one of their own will win and thus garner more attention for the winner's station. Anyway, I don't think this is much of an honor for any winner, unless she is absolutely desperate for attention, even locker room type attention.

At 9:58 PM, April 14, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree, 4:14. This era has come and gone. Women are supposed to be viewed as more than "babes," or objects. Not to mention that most of these women are married with kids, which IMO takes them out of the "babe" phase. And you hit the nail on the head about desire for attention. Why do these professional women vie for a title like this? Who votes in this crap? Sixth grade boys? Guys who live in their mom's basement?

If any of these girls think they would have their jobs if they weren't babes, they are only kidding themselves.

From 2010. What happened to change KARK's mind?

KARK Channel 4 creative services director Phil Wrobel says his station decided to not participate for a couple of reasons.
“For one thing, they're a partner with Channel 7 and that's our competition,” Wrobel says. “I'm not saying I don't want to affiliate ourselves with the Buzz. But for the most part, we have a good radio partnership with Clear Channel and we're looking to see how we can work with them and advance that partnership.”

“Also, what we stand for is a station you can count on to do certain things, and being in the Babe Bracket is not something you should count on from your local news reporters. That's not the image that we're going after. We want people to think of us as a credible news organization and the Babe Bracket is not something we're looking to be a part of.”

I don't know Ned personally but I do know that to be able to attain that weather certification you have to take 55 hours of straight "weather" courses. Within those courses, you also have to take one particular course which is CAL 3 based called thermodynamic meteorology. That then allows those who have that certificate the chance to earn the Seal of Approval from the National Weather Association. Does anyone know where I can find any of this coverage on youtube? A quick search came up short.

4 went with local news because they had some commercial time to sell.

That's just great. Local news carries the story or the bomb at 5p, then NBC carries the news at 5:30p, then, KARK has another newscast at 6p and repeats the same thing.

At 9:57 PM, April 15, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jessica is formerly KATV so I guess she got a free pass on first round. Maybe Alyse made it with her beauty queen credentials.

Guess it's irrelevant since we all know the winner will be someone from 7.

At 8:49 AM, April 16, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Women are meant to be objectified. That's why they are predisposed to wear makeup and spend hours "getting ready". This is all done so they may be objectified as soon as they step out. Having a babe bracket is just another exemplification of that fact.

At 6:29 PM, April 16, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

8:49, Have you ever learned the difference between fact and opinion? You state an opinion not a fact. This Babe Brackett needs to go away. The TV stations need to ask the radio station not to include their talent, and if the employers won't do that, then the female anchors who wish not to be included need to ask that their names not be placed in contention. I can't even imagine that any serious professional would brag about being on this list let alone bragging about winning it.

At 7:28 PM, April 16, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

6:29 you are also stating an opinion and not fact. The babe bracket does not need to go away - that is just your pissy pants opinion. News girls are hired for their looks. That isn't going to change.

So I'm kind of confused. Did Ned Perme call off he storm coverage or did the producer tell him to? Either way it was the wrong decision, but I wonder who is to blame for the lives that could have been impacted.

This reminds me of when Shea Rial did the same thing and was fired for it. Why isn't Ned getting the same treatment for this?
