... What is the end goal here? Cut costs, crank out crappy tv, and get paid minimal amounts for advertising because they get terrible ratings? Orrr are they actual trying to make a play to move into competition with KSLA and KTBS?

It's Nexstar, what do you think?

KMSS newscasts are only m-f at 9 no others are done. They are done at the tyler tx station which does fox and nbc. nexstar brought them as well

That is about to change. Everything about is about to change. Including the location. The ONLY people Nexstar is keeping is the KMSS/KSHV sales department which is #3 in this market. KTAL is #4. Everyone else will be laid off.

Beware of Darth Sook. Even if you move to another newsgroup Nexstar will follow you. They're everywhere. Their picking through your windows. Their going through your frig.

11:41 AM is correct. Nexstar-Mission will do the same thing in Shreveport they just did in Little Rock. FoxPeacock is coming to you.

Darth Sook? That so fits. Yes, there is major disturbance in the force.

All you folks at the CCA stations, get your resume out there now because Nexstar the Deathstar is going to lay you off. Those who don't get laid off won't be happy working for Nexstar. Just get out now, get as far away from that company as you can.

Can Nexstar be tracked on radar, because you can see the path of destruction for miles.

The only way to stop Nexstar the Deathstar is to get the word our far and wide in the industry to warn good people, including those trying to get into the business, to avoid this corporation at all costs. When they can't find qualified people--or even attract first-timers---they'll collapse.

Best start sending out those resumes now, but try to hold out for the severance package if at all possible. It makes a fantastic little nest egg if you go right to another job. It most likely will not be in broadcasting, but anything will do these days.

I am curious if Nexstar is planning to create a new hub to accommodate the former ComCorp-White Knight station in South Louisiana and Texas? Going by their track record I can see them creating a hub in Austin, or Baton Rouge. Possibly even both cities since Nexstar likes being in state capitals.

At 2:34 PM, April 29, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hummm, that's an interesting question. Nexstar currently has hubs in Little Rock and Midland so creating another hub in Central or East Texas, or even Southern Louisiana is a logical possibility. Now this is Nexstar we are talking about, and some of their decisions are not logical so it's anyones guess.

At 3:07 PM, April 29, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Logic has nothing to do with Nexstar decision making. It's all about cutting expenses to the bone to fatten up the bottom line. Their approach is short sighted like so many other US companies, executives fail to see that whatever short term gain they make in revenue they will lose in the long run because quality suffers...fewer viewers, lower ratings translate to less ad dollars.

Lo and behold, the ratings just came out...and where is KARK? Bottom rung. An ominous sign to those of you who have been absorbed by Nexstar the Deathstar.

We already know. Nexstar now owns the #3 and #4 stations in the Shreveport mkt.

Nexstar does not have a hub in Midland. They have a station. Their hub is in Lubbock.

At 12:15 AM, May 01, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Lubbock? Really??? Like that's an improvement.

Getting back to this new hub idea. I wouldn't be surprised if Nexstar did create a new hub at one of their Texas properties instead of having one in the hurricane zone in South Louisiana. Guess we will find out soon enough.

Good point. Unless Nexstar is planning to run everything from Lubbock and Little Rock they may start a new hub out of necessity. The Chief Eng at my last station had previously worked at a 10 stations hub. That station was sold, the hub was dissolved, and all of the hub'ed departments were returned to their individual stations. KARK is running like 9 or 10 stations so a new hub could absorb some of the stations in this latest acquisition.

I think you're right about the location. I'll give it 60/40 on being in Texas then Louisiana. Even if they don't start another hub there will be lots of lay offs at these old ComCorp stations.

Ah. Looks like more work for the already overworked at KARK. Thanks management!

Maybe now KMSS's newscast will be 7 nights a week and in-house instead of 5 nights a week transmitted from Longview.

Nexstar: The Sweatshop of Local TV.
"Here's the new boss . . .
same as the old boss . . ."

Don't be fooled again. TV jobs sound cool but unless you're one of the few getting paid a decent living, you'd be better off selling real estate, working at a bank, a hospital, a whorehouse (there you'd be more honest). ANYWHERE but with a NEXSTAR or any local TV station. Wise up... go back to school or get a job with better pay and a future. Broadcasting will only benefit the owners & managers, the anchor dweebs will wind up doing PR once they get canned.
Get out while you can.

Looks like Nexstar ends up getting their way. They tried to by KMSS in 2000 when I was working there. To much bull from Lafayette so they went across town and bought KTAL instead.

At 1:40 PM, May 10, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I worked at KMSS/KSHV/KAQY during that time so we must have worked together. I later went on to KTAL and Nexstar. ComCorp holds the distinction of being the worst company I've worked for in my 31 year working career. Moving to Nexstar is a vast improvement for everyone. Well, that's for everyone who survives the pending lay offs.

ComCorp is basically run by former radio dicks who ran their TV stations like cheap-market radio: spend no money on anything & ask more than what the product/service is worth.

They were trying to acquire properties in the mid-west years ago and got all pissy when the station picked them up in a station SUV instead of sending a stretch limo. They made as much noise about that as soon as they arrived and let's just say that no one was impressed by these redneck a__holes.

90% of broadcast employees will be replaced by automation in the next five years with computers running the show and one person left to repair the computers. Wait around and see.

Exactly. Like I posted a few days ago "we've been telling these fools that for months but they won't listen."

So what happened to the station in Little Rock? Is Shreveport next

Yes, it is.

At 1:20 PM, May 28, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@ 8:58 PM

Are you referring to Nexstar-Mission laying off over 30 people when they took over FOX 16 in Little Rock in January? The answer is yes. The plan is to move sales over to KTAL on North Market. Hub traffic, master control, and the business office, lay off everyone not in sales, and sell that property on Jewella.

At 6:19 PM, May 28, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yep... sales schlubs will be consolidated and not much else.
If it were me, I'd ride the unemployment bennies for awhile. Maybe look at getting displaced worker training (couldn't hurt to look into it...check State Employment Commish, they may have info).

TeeVee in Shreevspurt sucky-sucky-future unless you're a sales-leech. And that's iffy if you get shitty accounts.
