KATV Weather Guessers Get a New Home

KATV/Channel 7/Little Rock has a new weather center.  The new digs debuted Monday.  From what I could see this evening it features a lot more computer workstations...and more big screens.  I am not a fan of a weather man doing the weather pointing to a an oversized tv monitor.  It reminded me of seeing the KTBS/Channel 3/Shreveport mets doing that years ago.  Ned did finally make his way over to the green wall.

Also noticed KATV had updated its music...or maybe it's just been that long since I've watched Channel 7 news....

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! Stop using the term "Weather Guesser" EVERYTIME you refer to the weather people. It was only very slightly amusing the first time you used it. But using it every time is extremely obnoxious

stop taking yourself so seriously Tom. If the Garden Cat could read the NWS forecast off of a teleprompter you'd be out of a job.

Melinda was excited about it the other day talking about more room to move around. Good thing for her since she is on the Liz diet & workout plan. At least she can look busy like Ned as Todd runs circles around them & Barry during severe & winter weather

Did you actually copy and paste your mean spirited comment from the post below this one?

For the record, everyone knows she doesn't do her own forcasts. This isn't because she couldn't if she tried. It's more that no one cares. Chris and Alyson don't write the scripts either. Do you judge them for being lazy?

6:30 I'm just calling it like it is. Only one of the four mets actually follow weather, study it & chase it. Chris is the only one who is a true reporter. Alyson is just LOUD on air & somehow reports on the Hogs which is a joke but at the time convenient for her & Wes.

And everything seems to be working fine for them considering they've been kicking your ass up and down the block for years now with no end n sight.

That's right.forget about the other parts of the state. the entire state only exists only during sweeps.. and yes they are weather guessers..they guess what the weather will be.

Man, you people are idiots. It's no wonder you can't get ratings to save your life.

Morning anchors have been lazy since they were invented. You are not tellling on them via this blog. Everyone already knows.

I say 7 shrinks down, but only a meter would show ghe truth.

At 9:11 AM, April 25, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

For two years, 7 has shown growth in all shows in almost all demos, why would they shrink down? Why hasn't THV made any changes? They've been dropping across the board.

Nick had made 7 what it is. His staff and its leaders should be proud, because it was sinking before he got there.

As a former morning anchor I'm offended by the comment that we are lazy. We wake up at the crack of dawn, have little time to read hours worth of news content, deal with all manner of weirdos in the overnight hours, and then are responsible for churning out as much content as someone who reports during the 9-6 (at least that was the case for me). Plus, I have never in my life worked in a business where your shift extended well past 9...10...13 hours without anyone noticing, simply because things "got crazy" and although you'd been at work since 3 you were still required to cover the breaking madness. Some morning anchors are lazy, but I think that's simply because some PEOPLE are lazy.

Nick has done an incredible job at 7 but to say they were sinking before is just wrong. He took a station that was consistently in the top of the ratings and made them completely dominant. It's so fun to watch jealousy rear its ugly head on here. Face it folks, 7 is a powerhouse just like the old days and they don't show any signs of slowing. Congrats again KATV for completely sweeping another book.

Nick is doing an incredible job. THV missed the boat five years ago when it failed to make him news director.

Speaking of THV and news directors, what has this hot-shot from Philadelphia been doing? I see no noticeable on-air changes - except for their USA Today color schemes. It's still a terrible news product -- bad content, bad reporters (or MMJs).

What a treat it has been to see more of Beth Hunt in the evenings although paired with fake Christina. I don't see how 7's #'s are good for the Sat morning Trainwreck show. The obnoxious movie reviewer & red head who needs wardrobe consulting are horrendous.

You don't have to be a nerd, or chase thunderstorms, or show how tall a storm is on radar to be a good meteorologist. You certainly don't need 6 people talking as fast as an auctioneer, talking fast does not equal a good communicator. When the weather is bad, overwhelming the public with 25 different angles of radar is pointless. A tornado is a tornado, they are no worse today than they were in the past. The winner in television is the one who can convey the simplest information to the masses while doing this....the person should stay calm, cool and collective, it is that simple. I think Ned does a fine job of this. But younger people in the biz think faster, more info is better. " Go take shelter" is all you need to hear. But today's media want to cram so much in such little time, the message gets lost. This is a major reason channel 7 wins books time and time again. Compare a weather cast on Fox16 to CBS 7 nobody talks faster and crams so much info into 4 minutes than the weather guy on FOX 16. This is Arkansas, not NYC. People want to be able to make friends with the personalities they watch. Fast, slick car salesman approach to weather is a horrible mistake, always has been. Again Ned wins, he makes friends. Channel 7 knows this, hence Ned has job security, unlike the rest of the slick fast talkers. Oh, I don't work in tv.

Good Gosh could someone please tell anchors and reporters that we don't care that you are shooting a gun. It's always "Look at me, I'm shooting a gun."

Well, they are Weather Guessers, just like the pros at NWS only the pros have a lot better equipment to guess with. Get over it.

You could work at CNN and be a "news guesser."

Another "stellar" Sat Morning Daybreak broadcast. The movie reviewer is her usual "charming: self and for the love of the former Leake Building, will someone please consult with Ms. Hilton on wardrobe & a hint that less skin is better for her...oy......

THV's weather guesser Tom is THE stiffest "talent" (and I'm using this term very loosely) I have ever seen on-air or in public. He's a real-life Ted Baxter: Socially awkward and not funny, no matter how hard he tries (and boy, does he try--his desperate attempts at being witty gives me douche chills.) Just plain unwatchable (like most local TV.) Stay class, local broadcast TV industry!

HEALTH TIP:
If it's healthy, you don't have to douche.

At 11:13 PM, April 27, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Tom is a mess. Bland on air and has the worst dry sense of humor. Grumpy, self serving, and unpleasant to watch. I've switched to 4 because he puts me in a bad mood. He really needs to start wearing male spanx too because all you see is belly when he's in chroma.

His gut is the least of his worries. Ed is holding the THV weather department together. Sarah is pathetic and Tom is too busy stuttering and talking to Joey.

At 12:04 AM, April 28, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sarah is awful! She can't even get out a full sentence.

At 8:17 AM, April 28, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Thanks, Meredith.

At 5:20 PM, April 28, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If Ed is holding the weather department together, then THV has serious issues. Ed used to be very good but has slipped considerably in the past few years. And I'm a former THV viewer who switched to another local station for weather because Ed became difficult to watch.

At 8:13 PM, April 29, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

As a viewer I think THV's weather is good. However Ed would do better to do the Team thing like the other stations during bad weather. I do like that during bad weather we see more weather and less of the weather person. I think Sarah is getting better.... it takes a while to be comfortable, but she would make a good sidekick during storms.

I think based on the last set of big storms KATV should move Todd more to the front. I heard Ned say Todd was working social media. Yes he is good at that, but he is a true weather geek and does a good job of conveying important on TV also.

At 1:50 AM, April 30, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Todd would be the chief at any other station. That's a clear fact around the market.

At 1:51 AM, April 30, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Todd would be chief at any other station. That is well known throughout the market, but he'd rather be at #1. Todd keep up the hard work, it will pay off.

@1:51 keep dreaming Todd. You look like an alien. Maybe he could be chief in a tiny market. Again, you look like an alien.

At 12:52 PM, April 30, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Todd should be the chief met, he understands, studies & cares about the weather. Ned wouldn't or couldn't take a met certification test Melinda of all people passed. Barry is too concerned about tee time & Melinda, well she is kind of like Liz, she should be put out to pasture....

At 1:36 PM, April 30, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Todd does a great job. You can feel his interest which makes you trust him. Agreed that KATV should utilize him more/

At 2:18 PM, April 30, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You are all very, very smart people. Let's completely change the Number 1 station's personalities. Really? Go ahead and take pot shots at Barry and Melinda, THEY ARE STILL KICKING YOUR ASS! Todd would easily be the chief at Fox/Peacock or Terrible THV. But, KATV knows what works. Why in the hell hasn't KTHV changed anything? These numbers have been out for weeks. Hello, McFly? Anyone home?

Melinda is hot. She's got more curves than Hwy 298. Sarah is a cutie too. Meridith smiles so big it makes my face hurt. What's up with Miss America? She weighs at least two of Sarah and has no curves or at the least she covers up too much. She dresses like a granny. Sorry, she is not a weather guesser but I could not resist.

P.S. What is up with the huge gawdy necklaces the ladies always wear? They look like something from garage sales......... :-)

Everything about Sarah is cute, except her face. Meredith doesn't bother me. At least she has a personality and can talk, unlike Sarah. I've always thought Alyse dressed very professionally, and Melinda doesn't bother me either.

Ned's the star at 7 since eells isn't there any more. ned needs to retire.

At 7:02 PM, April 30, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

And Ned will continue to mumble, stumble, and jumble through the forecast. I think a drunk Vic would do a better job

At 7:26 PM, April 30, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Say whatever you want, just look at the scoreboard when you're done spouting off. Jealousy can be a bitter pill. Ned is a legend in these parts and nothing you can say will change that. KATV has the best weather, best sports, best anchors and pretty much the best reporters in town. That's hard to beat. Anyone who says otherwise is either a jealous competitor or has no clue about the industry. Probably both actually.

At 10:56 PM, April 30, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

7 is strong because of the station and its legacy. It's not because of specific talent. Use sports for an example. Sully is good but he's no Paul and we all know that. Just because he's on 7 doesn't make him automatically the best talent. The same could be said for several positions. The staff as a whole is very good but it's not correct to say because the station is number one, all the talent is the best in the market.

At 11:17 PM, April 30, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You're right, they're not the best because they're number one. They're number one because they are the best.

At 8:31 AM, May 01, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If the viewers knew how drunk Ned gets every night, he would not be so popular with viewers. He is dangerous for the station if you asked me. I don't have any problem with anyone at 7, but I worked there for long enough to know he has a real problem. A couple of beers is one thing, but that is not where he stops.

At 8:43 AM, May 01, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

A problem? Well I guess that's relative. In truth I probably drink just as much. I just don't do it before the show. Unfortunately for me, I think viewers would be able to easily tell if I did it before the newscast like Ned does.
