Shreveport Sports Director Sets the Record Straight About Departure

KTBS/Channel 3/Shreveport Sports Director Tim Fletcher sets the record straight on why Tomorrow, Friday, March 15 is his last day.  Fletcher made the following post on his Facebook page:

It appears word has gotten out about tomorrow being my final day at KTBS. Apparently, www.ArkansasTVNewswatch.Blogspot.com has gotten wind of my departure---and there is some wild conjecture among the comments.

First and foremost, I am leaving KTBS after 13 and a quarter years for one reason and one reason only---to spend more time with my wonderful family. For too many years, work came before family.

I proposed a plan that would allow me to continue working at KTBS; increase my reporting workload; but allow me to be home three nights a week after 7pm. The station, as is their prerogative, chose instead to accept my two-week notice dated 3/18/13. Basically, I pitched an ultimatum to the station and they made the choice to pass on my proposal.

Some rumors that are totally unfounded and untrue: I'm not going to any other station in town and haven't been contacted by any other media outlet. I have mostly enjoyed my time at KTBS, especially the people I have had the opportunity to cover/get to know over the years. High school coaches are the unsung heroes in our communities and are grossly underpaid for all they provide. For those fearing for our future? Go to a High School baseball, softball, football, soccer, or basketball game---attend a track and field meet---you'll see young men and women competing with all their might and skill in the true spirit of competition. The games/meets are a culmination of hours upon hours of preparation. I have always loved the stories that develop in 48 minutes of football or 32 minutes of hoops or 7 innings on the diamond.

The good news, for me, is---I'm going to continue to cover all the sports that I'm accustomed to covering. My radio show will continue on KWKH (AM1130, The Tiger)... with plans for expansion of hours and product on the horizon. I will be able to devote a LOT more time to writing, in particular our blog (www.TheTimFletcherShow.Blogspot.Com) and various other projects.

To my fellow employees (even the one whose "brother" says I'm hard to deal with and feel irreplaceable--comments section of the tv blog) from 1999 thru today: I have enjoyed so many great times, and commiserated over so many rough times. It has been a blast to work with so many folks over the year... I "think" i've been a pretty good co-worker, not all the time, but MOST of the time.

I am so fortunate to have a great wife in Alysia Starnes Fletcher and three kids who have put up with my absence for too many years, especially Sydney Fletcher who saw more of me inside the station's walls and at games than our own dinner table. Looking forward to spending high-Quality time with Aly, Syd, Caroline Copeland and Pearce Copeland starting Saturday...

For those that have never liked me on air, your wish has been granted---albeit, 18+ years after H.Lee Bryant hired me straight out of U.A.L.R. to take over weekends at KTAL.

We will be around... looking forward to the next, great, big, leap!

Eh...given this mkt and demos, no one will care all that much when somebody leaves. Not like they used to anyway.

Happy trails to you, Tim.

The local sports coverage dies, along with everything else in this town. Fletcher was our only hope for quality and in-depth reporting! All Shreveport sports fans should be in mourning!

I swear every time I go out of town someone leaves KTBS. First it was Jennifer. Actually I was out of town both times she left. Next was Judy, then Chris and Rhonda, and now Fletch? Makes me wonder who is next?

Think of the money you'll save by not having to wear snappy-wardrobe for the camera. I can see you following the Chateau Brando biz-model for radio.

A wise choice. Get out of broadcasting while you can and devote your life's work to someplace that you can retire from; not some vocation where most people bounce around from town to town their whole lives. Good for you!

This is one position that can be outsourced to the Disney/ABC owned ESPN.

Boys & Girls: Pitching ultimatums to management is not exactly a good negotiating tool, especially to KTBS. Of course they'll shoot it down, any manager would just out of principle.

I love Fletch like a brother, and he always made me laugh. But he was hell to work with. You'd have to start paging him about 5 minutes out, just so he'd make it to the set on time, hopefully dressed. Before we went digital, he'd toss a stack of tapes to the VTR operator, print the scripts to our printer and off we'd go! His scripts often had nothing in them, and forget out ques. I liked to call it psychic directing, cause you'd have to read his mind. Make sure you had studio listen on, cause during each sot he'd tell you to drop stories left and right, and he'd still go long and want to toss to break. And lets not even talk about Friday night football. Still, I liked the guy and couldn't stay mad at him. Good luck Tim, enjoy the family time, and congrats on joining the list of those who've escaped the clutches of Sirven.

Yep....sounds typical. Just another example of sports-dweebs in Shrevesburg.

I personally feel as though all of the negative comments on here are coming from 65-year-old men who are sitting around in their wife-beaters and too-small underwear who are too bored to be doing anything better with their lives. Hmm. Fletch, you're awesome, we already miss you.

AM radio? I don't know anyone under 65 who listens to AM radio.

At 6:01 AM, March 28, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You are correct. Not many of the under 65 crowd are familiar with AM radio and much less are familiar with its ability to cover so much area with less power than FM. If you don't know what I am talking about, please ask a person 65 years or older that has been in radio for decades for the answer.

Ewe, local radio? I gladly pay for Sirius/XM radio just so I don't have to listen to local radio.

I can count on one hand the number of times I've tuned into local radio in Shrevespit-Bossierville. Each time had to do with hoping I'd get timely news and/or weather info about something significant. Instead I'd catch what seemed like a 3 minute ad cluster for stupid shit. Local Radio pretty much sucks as far as news and information is concerned. I'm surprised they get advertisers.

You're right, S'port radio is really bad. For years I've wondered why people waste their money advertising on radio.

So it looks as if KTBS management told Fletcher (to borrow his words)
"...take a flying leap!"
