Arkansas Today...What Would I Change...

Where do I start. First off I don't work in the TV News biz or anything close. I am just a regular viewer having grown up in Southwest Arkansas having access to all Shreveport and Little Rock stations on my cable system. With that said here is my opinion and what I think what needs to be improved on with the new Arkansas Today.

> First off-- Branding.. Come on go ahead and stick that Channel 6 logo up there next to the ticker and let folks know they are watching KTAL and not some new channel on the TV. But then again the goal may be NOT to associate Arkansas Today with the "local" station.

> Use your resources--Fill the time with news not fluff stories. You are attempting to provide information to the whole state of Arkansas and beyond. You have newsrooms and journalists you are not utilizing that could fill your entire 30 minute program with news! You are paying those folks...use them!

> Graphics--This is gotta get under control. You cannot mix graphics packages because it just looks like crap. Why not use the same graphics package at all the stations...makes sense to me...

> Local cut ins-- Really? Doesn't this beat the purpose of the whole concept of the program. Dee should do the weather PERIOD!

I have to wonder how many people out of Arkansas is watching this newscast. If I lived in Texas or Louisiana I know I wouldn't be interested in all the Arkansas news. What I can't grasp is the fact there are newsrooms down in Shreveport and Monroe and they aren't allowed to put on their own noon news program. You've got them on the payroll utilize them. People
want to see their local people and get their local news. But I guess it is saving a dollar or two.

Who are you to question Nexstar's wisdom? Don't you know they have it all figured out? That was a joke by the way. What I said and the company itself.

Points well taken. You are correct. Those of us in Louisiana and Texas can care less about this Arkansas newscast. I only watched Monday's premier show just to see what its all about. It reminds me of the generic canned fluff news geared toward tourists in places like Disney World, Branson, ect...

There are two reasons why the Nexstar stations in Monroe and Shreveport did not have a noon newscasts. One, Nexstar will not pay for it. Two, the none Nexstar stations in Monroe and Shreveport already have noon newscasts with viewers who are station loyal to those stations and newscasts.

This reminds me of when KTAL did an occasional local biz show whenever they could get a casino to sponsor it. Kind of like features on casinos, where to shop and junk like that. Lame..lame...lame.

Uh... I'd sh$tcan it and work out the kinks before premiering such a piece of crap. It's like let's toss this at a wall and see if it sticks. Kinda amateurish IMHO.

All I've seen on it so far is mostly KARK and KNWA stuff and a few little $hit quality film clips out of Eldorado and not a word out of KTAL.

We really don't want anything from the other stations.

Nexstar is hoping to aggregate their so-called "local news" content and spread it out over their regional mkts. It would be a good idea IF they actually had decent content that could attract viewers. But all they have is poorly-done crap packaged as something "new". It's a lot like putting icing on a shit-cake. Looks pretty at a distance but get close and it smells, take a bite and you gag! Corporate feels that if they keep it going...people will grow to accept it. And as long as they don't have to pay for syndication, they make money. That's their thinking...profit through cutting costs, forget value to viewers or advertisers.

At 12:08 PM, April 05, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I wish Nexstar would go ahead and collapse so all this crap would go away.

I saw Arkansas Today and I guess the good thing about it is that it was televised in HD on KTAL. But when they did local weather cut-ins with Dennis Patrick, the screen size and video quality went to crap. As a Shreveport viewer, I really didn't find anything about this newscast that meant anything to me. If you're into news about Razorback sports or Little Rock stuff, fine. But Texarkana-S'port. Nope. No value whatsoever. Guess the local advertisors must've gotten this dirt cheap because I can't see how they expect to build any local cume audience share with this stuff.
I betcha this could be the precursor to all "local news" on KTAL. Could the 5, 6 & 10pm and AM news be next? They could fire half the news staff and simply do "cut-ins" like KMSS does. Too bad but seeing how Nexstar does things, I can see this being strongly considered. The corporate cry must be screw the local community, save the dollar!

I just can't wrap my head around this program in the Shreveport area. I guess the people who make these decisions must not feel viewers in Shreveport or Texarkana are worth the effort to put on a newscast that serves this community. Doesn't make sense. But I guess someone with a spreadsheet somewhere has convinced themselves that it does. With that logic, they should just run infomercials all the time; they'd cut their costs and make money. As for local viewers, who cares about serving them? Nexstar sure doesn't.

At 1:58 PM, April 05, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

A crappy product and stupid stuff like this is why KTAL will always be #3 in this market. The reason Patrick's cut-ins look like they do is because they are recorded in SD early for both the Today Show and Arkansas Today. Then they transfer from KTAL to KARK for air. If you want them to look and sound any better then KARK will have to produce the cut-ins in HD there in house.

it amazes me that people in louisiana and texarkana are complaining about the lack of news about texarkana and louisiana on arkansas today....but remember...the name of the show is ARKANSAS today...not louisiana today or texarkana today....yes these stations are contributing content for the parts of Arkansas that they cover. i understand that the viewers in this area would like to see news for all of their area, not just the part of arkansas that particular station covers...but quit complaining about the fact that there is no louisiana or texas news when the show is focused on arkansas. now im getting off my soap box

I could not agree more.

I for one am sick of all the fluff stories, which is why I quit watching Channel 11 News.

Really, who cares about how many boxes of cereal one can donate. It's a good thing, and helps people eat but as far as interest it's completely off center. Just say you are collecting and then give the amount and shut up and talk about real news.

When I kick on the TV in the morning, I really could not care less who is "paying it forward" or doing something in the garden.

I want news & weather. And not fluffy news, I want to know what is going on here and the rest of the world.

Also, what is the point of telling everyone where the speed traps are? Would it not work better if the people with their foot in the gastank just got a ticket?

I gotta say this as well: I could care less who is reading the news as long as they a read it properly.

Plus, perhaps the people who own the station could invest in a spell checker for the idiots who type the stories into the telepromter because those of us that use closed-captioning are wondering what 4th grader typed all that horrid spelling and diction.

Those of us in Texarkana and Shreveport don't like anything about Arkansas Today. Much less all the Little Rock "news." We already have the well established KSLA News at Noon at the same time. Good luck getting any of those station loyal viewers to switch.

I don't know why you are all that amazed. Shreveport-Bossier-Texarkana viewers couldn't care less about news out of Little Rock, Fayetteville, Booger Holler or WTF-ever else town in central to NW Ark. is featured on Arkansas Today. KTAL Channel 6 is a Texarkana-Shreveport station which is supposed to serve those communities (E.Texas / NW La.) The SW Ark counties' population COMBINED wouldn't add up to Texarkana / New Boston. So why Nexstar is wasting the local affiliate's airspace is surprising. Even more surprising is why local advertisers in S'port would spend their money on such a misguided / mis-targeted market.
Just another example of how off-base the owners, programmers and managers of KTAL / Nexstar really are. KTAL has always sucked but it seems that inteligence is lacking in the way things are brought about at KTAL. Nexstar has had this operation for what...10 years or so? And it's barely improved from what it used to be. Sad...sad...sad.

It all flows from the top. So if you want to complain go directly to the top and let corporate know exactly how you feel.

Glad to see KTAL has stopped using the NewsTicker for the past several days. That thing is annoying and very distracting.

At 9:43 PM, April 07, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Personally, I think if KTAL used Skype for cut-ins, it would probably look better than their on-air product.

At 11:56 AM, April 08, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I totally disagree. Skype looks and sounds horrible in newscasts. The video freezes up, and the audio constantly drops out sounding like something from the early days of the phone.

At 12:11 PM, April 08, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If this day of HD, why would you use it. Oh yeah, it's cheaper.

At 10:18 PM, April 08, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

what are the goofy icons to the left of "sports" and "weather" ?

At 4:27 PM, April 09, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think the "Skype" comment was being a tad sarcastic considering how crappy KTAL's regular SD signal looks on air.
I think most compentent viewers are puzzled at why a large corporation like Nexstar doesn't have the resources to get KTAL's local newscasts televised in HD. It speaks volumes for a company that is in the business of broadcasting when they aren't willing or able to get their on-air product up to snuff. It looks cheap and that's what viewers think. It's like broadcasting in Black & White 10 years after everyone else has gone Color.

At 7:08 PM, April 09, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nexstar is cheap and will not spend the money on each individual station to be 100% HD. The only way they will do that is to outsource KTAL's newsroom and production control to KARK Little Rock.

You spoke to soon 7:01. KTAL started using that annoying NewsTicker again today.

If my friend who works there is to be believed, KTAL is going HD w a new set in July just in time for the Olympics.

At 10:56 AM, April 10, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Good it's about time. So will the new set and full HD be done the same time KTAL starts airing live news from Texarkana again?

At 10:49 AM, April 11, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree with doing away with the recorded weather and news cut ins. Let the person in Little Rock do the weather live.

At 11:40 AM, April 11, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Not gonna happen. Now whats this about KTAL doing live news from Texarkana? They haven't done that in years.

Live news from Texarkana??? Do tell.

At 3:45 PM, April 11, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I work at 6. Haven't heard bupkis about live news from Texarkana. Got a cam up to go live w our bureau person. That's it.

The bit about us goin HD in July is true tho. Gonna be a pain in the ass. Everything is gettin torn up.

At 5:56 PM, April 11, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well having a live cam in the Texarkana bureau is more then KTAL has done in years.
Glad to hear things are being torn up. I took a tour of the station several years ago, and judging from the age and condition of the equipment EVERYTHING needs to be replaced.

At 8:52 PM, April 11, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Can we get more info on KTAL going HD? Same graphics as KARK? Same type set? Can we get a mock up of the set?

At 9:19 PM, April 11, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Graphics will be same as KARK. So, best guess, set will be similar. Also, brand new control room (with brand new equipment) will go where old master control was.

At 10:43 AM, April 12, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nexstar is actually spending money on new equipment? Seriously??? Are new studio cameras and decent lighting included?
Not surprised the set is being redone again. KTAL gets a new set every other year. So whats replacing the satanic vagina in the middle of the set?
Love the KARK graphics. Thats the only thing I like about Arkansas Today.

Getting new equipment. Rehiring former employee's. Things are really turning around since the new GM took over.

At 4:19 PM, April 13, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Is it true that KTAL re-hiring former employees? Did these people leave on good terms or bad terms?

At 5:35 PM, April 13, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

People who leave a job on bad terms are normally not eligible for rehire. However, KTAL has been known to rehire people who left on bad terms in the past.

At 7:29 PM, April 13, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I used to work at KTAL and they rehired several former employees who left on bad terms while I was there. Most of these rehires should have NEVER been rehired, much less allowed in the building. There were a few rehires who got a screwed over the first time and should not have been fired in the first place. The last I heard a couple of them are still there and the managers who fired them the first time are long gone.

Why does KARK set the count and amount for Dialing for Dollars during the first half-hour. Don't they realize that the D for D doesn't begin until 12:30p and those people in the outlying areas can't see the D for D show because the state-wide coverage goes off at 12:30p.

The "Audio Gremlins" got someone. Do the folks at KARK ever do mic checks before going on the air?

At 7:37 PM, April 14, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Its not just KARK. Mic problems are a Nexstar thing. The Nexstar stations in Monroe and Shreveport have mic problems all the time.

At 8:03 PM, April 14, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't know about those other stations but KTAL in Shreveport has audio problems all the time. They also mess up the lottery drawing constantly.

At 12:02 AM, April 15, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Lately, since the stations have let go most of their experienced help, this has appeared. It won't be long until we start to see more of this. Management saving money. That is what is is all about. Get out while you can if you are young.

At 11:13 PM, April 15, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Where are KTAL getting these new inexperienced on air kids from? They are terrible!

At 11:21 AM, April 16, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

We stumbled on to a KTAL news report about a young girl who donated her hair. The story itself wasn't bad but the girl-reporter (and I do mean GIRL) seemed like she was a high-school intern doing the report.
I mean seriously KTAL... what are you guys thinking? I mean people have to start somewhere but this girl seems like she should be working on prom decorations or homecoming float.
How's about getting some folks with some cred?

At 11:30 AM, April 16, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I saw that and wondered the same thing. Is KTAL trolling the high schools for talent now? KTAL has several other reporters who are painfully inexperienced.

At 4:47 PM, April 16, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It would be nice to have reporters who don't look and sound like 16 year olds.

At least the kids at the fast food places have more mature voices then the ones on 6.

At 9:56 AM, April 17, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Maybe so but last time I was at Wendy's & Burger King, I thought I needed an interpreter.

At 5:31 PM, April 17, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's strange you are talking about immature looking and sounding young people. We were discussing this subject Friday in the faculty lounge. I have been teaching high school longer then many of you have been alive. A majority of my students over the past 10-15 years are not as mature as their parents I thought 20 and 30 years ago. Their physical appearance, their voices, and their attitudes are far less mature then their parents were at the same age.

At 10:54 PM, April 17, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Going back to some previous posts on this thread what all will happen when KTAL goes to full HD? Will they actually be in HD for real, or will they fake it like they've been doing with those fake HD wings during the newscasts? Will the audio problem finally be fixed? Dead batteries, clipped mics, mics turned off, ect... What about the lottery? WIll that get fixed too? Is there any chance they will stop using that annoying NewsTicker? Some newscasts it there and some its not.

At 9:15 AM, April 18, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I wouldn't count on it 10:54. I would be happy if the only thing KTAL did was to stop using that stupid ticker. At least they are updating it now. They use to run the same information on it for two or three weeks before they would update it.

At 11:29 AM, April 18, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Someone had posted somewhere else in this blog that KTAL was going full-HD in time for the Olympics. Just passing this along as I have no idea if it's true or not.

Yes, its true.

Caught last few minutes of Ark Today. They had a segment on kid's health but it looked squeezed like aspect ration was off. Video quality was yuk as was audio. After the report they went back to full HD which looked fine. Just wondering why they don't have better (quality) content as far as technical standards?

At 4:50 PM, April 18, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Quality? Standards? Your watching the wrong station for that.
