Movers and Shakers In LA....

TV Spy reports longtime KNOE, Monroe, LA, anchor John Denison is leaving the station after 11 years. His last day on air will be February 29.

TV Spy reports a new VP GM has been named at KTAL, Channel 6, Shreveport. Mark McKay from Nexstar's Amarillo, TX station cluster will fill the job.

Well isn't this something? Yet another long time KNOE personality fleeing the station. I wonder if he will join 4 of his former KNOW co-workers at KTBS in Shreveport?

Good luck Mark! You are going to need it. Even though you are already with Nexstar, KTAL is not like your stations in Amarillo.

Denison has been in the Monroe market much longer than 11 years... More like 31.

7:02 The original article on TV Spy clarifies John's 31 years in Monroe broadcasting.

Hey 7:01 My guess it will be very soon. Long time KNOE anchor quitting. KTBS currently advertising an opening for an anchor. Sounds like a match made in Servin heaven.

John's a good guy to work with! Good luck to him.

KTAL is the worst workplace in America. It is hokey and lame on-air.

So what happened to Mark Cummings?

At 8:27 PM, February 15, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Mark was fired Monday.

Maybe the new guy at KTAL will fire Meeshell and get them into the modern era with HD newscasts.

At 10:17 PM, February 15, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Interesting... Mark was pretty tight with Ivan Smith who thought the world of MeeShell. Hmmm? Naw.... nothing will happen right away. Give it 6 months and maybe things will be diff.
BTW...didn't someone post here awhile back that things were going to change after 2012 got started? Interesting.

Todd Warren and those hard to follow graphics NEED TO GO! He's not attractive, and talks over his viewers. Would rather see Patrick Dennis in the drivers seat.

Weather drives ratings, Todd Warren has not helped.

I agree todd's forecast is as limp-wristed.

It does not matter what corporate does, or who they bring in as talent or behind the camera. KTAL will NEVER over take KSLA or KTBS in the Shreveport market.

..."It does not matter what corporate does, or who they bring in as talent or behind the camera. KTAL will NEVER over take KSLA or KTBS in the Shreveport market."

This may be true, but there is so reason it can't happen. The three stations are basically doing the same thing. Why KTAL refuses to compete in this market is bad management based on greed in ownership. Nexstar is worse than the Kansas City Royals when it comes to giving the fans a crappy product.

So in this instance, I believe that talent would make a BIG DIFFERENCE. Why not hire some babes, and pay good talent to stay. Why STEAL Patrick Dennis from the #1 rank weather team, and make him 2nd man?
That move is the all time best way to increase in ratings, but TOO LATE KTAL, can't make that move now.

NBC is a good network, l wish they had some say into who owns the affiliation in towns.

I think Todd does ok. Patrick "Roundtree" Dennis sounds like a whiny chain-saw when he speaks.

@ 3:49 PM If NBC/Universal owned KTAL we would not be having this discussion.

KTAL has a 50+ year history of having a bad news product under two separate ownerships. Since 2004 KTAL's had 4 general managers, 5 news directors, 6 main anchors, and dozens of meteorologists, reporters, sports reports, directors, producers and production assistants. Plus multiple name, set, and format changes. None of these people and none of these changes ever lifted KTAL out of third place.

KTAL did not "STEAL" Patrick Dennis away from KSLA. With all the crap that was going on at KSLA at the time, Patrick quit and opened Patrick Dennis Productions. The economy tanked so he took the morning show job at KTAL to supplement his income. Since Patrick started out at KTAL when he first came here it was like going home. Going to a very dysfunctional home, but home none the less.

I can't believe Nexstar brought in someone else as GM. I thought Mike Thomas was going to be the next GM.

At 8:34 PM, February 16, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

2 Things come to mind:
Nexstar is a lily-white / "good ol' boy corporation. (look at their corporate site: http://www.nexstar.tv/index.php?option=com_wrapper&view=wrapper&Itemid=73)

AND

Mike Thomas is perhaps better at operations than being a GM.

Mike Thomas is an Uncle Tom.

Thanks Patrick for the "coming home" line. Just pissed my pants LOLOLOL

9:09 I just did the same thing. Several of the comments on here are just to funny. Totally ture, but to funny. I see nothing has changed in ol Shrevesburg.

Nexstar sure did take their sweet time getting rid of Mark. I heard corporate was out for him when I was in town back in September.

Mark will land on his feet. He always does. I predict Mark will either go back over to KMSS, or possibly Ivan Smith.

7:16 said something about KTBS looking for a new anchor. Does this mean Gerry May is leaving or is KTBS finally getting smart and is going to get rid of Judy Waggoner?

At 10:44 AM, February 19, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That anchor position at KTBS has been posted for months.
Option 1 is they could actually be looking for someone else to replace either Gerry, Judy, or someone on the morning show.
Option 2 is it could be advertising Jody's new job and they just haven't gotten to taking it down.
SInce KTBS has taken down 5 of the 8 opening they had over the past couple of weeks I'll go with Option 1.

I lived out of the area for about 15 years. Got home about twice each year - maybe Christmas and in the summer.

Was always interesting to see who was at KTAL.

Because it was only rarely that you saw the same people.

At 12:12 PM, February 20, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Seems like if anyone has had GM experience, they'll wind up getting a job again somewhere as a GM. I've seen some real douche-bags get canned at one station only to wind up getting hired at another in a couple months. Seems like being a douche-bag is a badge of honor among TV corporate execs otherwise why would they keep hiring these a##holes?

At 2:23 PM, February 20, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

5:12 If you thought KTAL's on air turn over was high you should have seen all the comings and goings behind the camera. I lost the list a co-worker and I created and we've had over 200 people come through KTAL over the past 5 or 6 years.

At 3:11 PM, February 20, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Whoa, that's way to much turnover. It also explains why 6 is consistently bad.

At 4:18 PM, February 20, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KTAL / Nexstar is simply churning debt. The core company executives and higher-level managers are doing whatever it takes to keep juggling the debt as long as they can maintain income streams so they get their pay. Everyone else below second tier management is viewed as a tool or machine. Perry Sook and his cronies are hoping for market timing so they can cash-out with a mega-merger or sale to some investment group. The focus is to appear as lean-and-mean on the balance sheet so that whoever is auditing the company to determine valuation will believe that income levels can be continued if they buy. Word to the wise: do what you can to enhance your status but if you think it's ever going to change there, you need to wake up and smell the coffee. There is no better tomorrow for you unless you are at the upper levels of the pyramid. Get out while you can.

At 5:50 PM, February 20, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Who knows, maybe Mitt Romey's Bain Capital will buy out Nexsar and sell it off station by station.

At 5:54 PM, February 20, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well and factor this in: with the presidential election coming up, Nexstar will be making a pile of money on PAC advertising as well as party ad buys. So you can just figure they'll ride that gravy-train well for the next year and make out.
Will they spend more on local station improvement? What do you think?

At 4:22 PM, February 21, 2012, Anonymous Magic 8 Ball said...

NO

At 12:59 PM, February 22, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well it's a good thing revenues are picking up for the election. KTAL needs to make up some of the revenue they have lost like the $78,000 First Methodist account.

At 7:05 PM, February 22, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Do tell? What happened, they forget to punch in the church service one time too many?

At 7:30 PM, February 22, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes, plus KTAL did not have any engineers for a while who had to rewire equipment to get the signal on the air, and sit there through the entire service every Sunday.

At 11:26 AM, February 23, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I am surprised First Methodist stayed with KTAL as long as they did. At least now you can see the service without any problems on KTBS, and what ever live sporting event NBC has scheduled for 11:00 can be seen in full and not just cut to an hour late at noon.

At 12:18 PM, February 23, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Isn't that the truth.

5:12 You are so right. I get back home to Shreveport about the same as you and just about every time I come home I see different faces on KTAL. KTBS seems to have as much, if not more, turn over then KTAL. At least KTBS has the ratings to back up all their changes and drama.

At 11:27 AM, February 28, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I see both KNOE and KTBS are very lax in updating their wed sites. Lots of profiles not posted. Old job postings. Has KNOE really been looking for a anchor/producer since it was posted in August? It has Marla as the contact person but she "left" and her old position has been posted since December.

So is this Denning guy really going to KTBS? They still have that anchor/reporter position posted.

Yes, Mark was on air with KTAL back in the 1980's. Back when KTAL was in a distant 3rd. All these years and millions of dollars later KTAL is still in a distant 3rd.

OR
Slice-of-Life shots of local "celebrities" like Liz Swaine (barf) or Cedric Glover or Brent Muscatt or James Burton or Bill Joyce holding his Oscar (gag) saying they watch KTAL ?!
OR
A combination of both?

KTAL ...News that matters to You! NOT!!

Speaking of KTAL, does anyone know if they've had an uptick in their past ratings books? Just wondering if KTAL pulled any audience away from KSLA since KTBS recently claimed they are Number #1 in the Nielsen. Just curious to see if KTAL had shown any audience increas of late.

At 11:38 AM, March 23, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Of course not. KTAL has always been, and always will be a distant 3rd to KSLA and KTBS.

Take this for what it's worth (I heard it second hand), but November was apparently KTAL's best Nov in years. Up 50% in some demos. Again, it's second hand. And 50% of crap is likely still crap.

I'm still puzzled at why a large corporation like Nexstar doesn't have the resources to get KTAL's local newscasts televised in HD. It speaks volumes for a company that is in the business of broadcasting when they aren't willing or able to get their on-air product up to snuff. It looks cheap and that's what viewers think. It's like broadcasting in Black & White 10 years after everyone else has gone Color.

At 6:12 PM, July 07, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well they're finally broadcasting in HD! What a relief!!
