Former Shreveport Anchor Sets Up Shop

Seems Sherri Talley has went into business for herself. The former Shreveport news anchor veteran has started up her own PR firm, Talley Media, LLC. The new firms bio states she has linked up with Intereality Media for the venture. Talley retired from KTBS last year after many, many years of anchoring news in the ArkLaTex.

"Has went" is not the only thing wrong with the original post. What is this about Sherri retiring? Sherri didn't retire. She quit!

At 6:07 PM, February 07, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

don't hate on 'has went,' remember what part of the country it is... but even so, it's not proper grammar.

post should say: she's 'done gone' into business for herself.

At 6:59 AM, February 08, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm hoping you were trying to be funny with "has went."

At 10:05 AM, February 08, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, I am from a long line of redneck hillbillies, as my ancestors moved west from Appalachia, and "Sherri done gone in bidness fer her own self" is what seems right to me. The writer is trying to get uppity and talk proper and show hisself to be better an the rest of us with his saying "has went".

At 10:44 AM, February 08, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

1:20 is right. Not only is the original post grammatically incorrect. It is also factually incorrect.

Getting back on subject. Congratulations and good luck with your new business Sherri! You are a natural for it.

At 10:53 AM, February 08, 2012, Anonymous Night Shift said...

I second that. Congratulations Sherri!!!

Question. What happened with Extra Tuesday night/Wednesday morning? It wasn't there and KTBS was in black for 30 minutes. Real good there "#1."

At 6:52 PM, February 08, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I saw that myself NIght Shift. Very unprofessional.

At 11:24 PM, February 08, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I for one would like to see Sherri Talley come back to KTBS. Jody is fine, but Sherri is a superior anchor.

At 4:40 PM, February 09, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Eh...I think they're both about equal. Depends on whether you like blondes or brunettes. I always wondered why KTBS didn't try to hold on to Maci McGinnis...now she was a stunner and had a good voice too!

At 4:28 PM, February 11, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Or they could get that former anchor who looked like a Gecko to come back.
That would be something

At 6:39 PM, February 11, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why can't, or should I say why won't, KTBS sell out their inventory? There was entirely to much promo fill during the Krewe of Centaur Parade.

At 8:54 PM, February 11, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

2 Reasons come to mind:
#1: Local advertisers probably think their core audience is attending the parade and not at home watching TV
OR
#2: All ad deals have to be approved by George and once he sets a rate, he won't budge. It's known that he won't negotiate.

At 11:16 AM, February 12, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I wondered why there were so many promos on KTBS. That explains everything.

At 12:55 PM, February 12, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

They could not sell those spots at any rate. It just takes seeing their coverage of that parade one time. It's pretty bad.

At 9:09 PM, February 12, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Lol The local yokel coverage was bad, but the cut aways to the drunk gay crypt keeper at the beginning of the parade route were way bad. Could you at least keep your fag sober KTBS?

At 10:46 AM, February 13, 2012, Anonymous Bitch Please said...

Why should they when almost everyone he interviewed at the parade was slurring words and staggering drunk? Hey look I'm on tv! Woo Hoo! Getter done! Woo Hoo!

At 11:46 AM, February 13, 2012, Anonymous Major Disappointment said...

Actually, this years coverage of the Centaur parade was really bad. It was sloppy at best. I have watched KTBS's parade coverage for several years and this one was the worst one I have seen so far. They yacked back and forth way to much going on and on about one individual or one float. Then some groups would go by without a mention.

At 3:29 PM, February 13, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Local special programming events by local stations have really become amateurish the past few years. I've seen public access channels in other cities that had better production values, on-air talent, cleaner switching...etc. What happened to Shreveport TV? It has really slipped quite a bit.

At 4:50 PM, February 13, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

"What happened to Shreveport TV?" I'll tell you what happened. Over the past several years all the local stations have run off almost everyone with experience and replaced them with people who have very little, and/or no experience. Some of us have gotten out of broadcasting all together, but the majority of us have moved on to stations in other markets.

At 5:05 PM, February 13, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@ 9:09 Was gay boy drunk or just real happy to be around all those policemen? Men in uniform are what he is into.

At 6:30 PM, February 13, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Actually I bet a majority of those who left or got run-off from KTBS are no longer in broadcasting. (If they have any sense.)

At 11:15 AM, February 14, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Can any one tell us what's the deal with the weather computer at KTBS? Is it new and still working out the kinks, or is it about to crap out? Over the past few weeks its been messing up on air a lot. No matter who is using it.

At 6:36 PM, February 14, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I have noticed the weather computer problem mysef.

Just saw on the KTBS website and see they have filled 5 of the 8 positions they had posted. I guess people are desperate enough to work there.

At 1:28 AM, February 15, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

6:36 have you also noticed the drunken fag on air as well? This could be an issue with FCC as well.

At 12:22 PM, February 15, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

1:28 AM The FCC has been a totally useless entity for the past 10 or 12 years. Unless you flash a tit or flip people off during the halftime of the Super Bowl the FCC doesn't care.

At 10:57 AM, February 19, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You are 100% accurate. If the FCC were run like they used to be KMSS, KSHV, and most likely KTAL would have lost their license years ago.

At 12:17 PM, February 20, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

We have good ol' guvamint deregulation to thank for the state of local TV these days. When TV ownership rules were more restrictive and the FCC actually had public interests in mind, there were regulations in place that kept standards and practices intact. But thanks to deregulation and corporate influence via lobbying efforts, most of the best practices / standards haven't had much enforcement. FCC Commissioners are impotent given that they mostly use the job to get a better corporate lobbying job themselves after 4 yrs as FCC commish; adding to the self-fulfilling prophecy of keeping the FCC inept, inefficient and incompetent. Broadcast groups win, public loses.

At 2:30 PM, February 20, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yep, and you can thank Ronald Reagan for that.

At 2:38 PM, February 20, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Point well taken. A lot gets by now that would not have flown even 10 years ago. Things like a drunk or high reporter covering a local mardi gras parade would have been an infraction. It does seem like KTBS as the self appointed leader would be more on top of their staff more. Maybe I expect too much of them.

At 2:42 PM, February 20, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh please, Most of the old anchors at 3, 6, and 12 were drunk during the newscasts.

At 10:35 AM, February 21, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Back to the thread, Good luck to Sherri in her new gig. But I have a feeling that you'll wind up back on air with either KSLA or KTAL in the next 12 months or so.

At 4:17 PM, February 21, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, a few of us are speculating Sherri will do just that. We'll see.

@2:42 You are right. There were a lot of anchors who would do the newscasts either drunk, stoned or both. Bob Griffin, Al Bolton, Sylvia Rachel, Sherri Warren, MIchelle White, Al Pierce, and Dale Hoffman just to name a few.

At 6:26 PM, February 21, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@2:42 You do not know that to be true. The reference to being drunk on air this time was not an anchor. It was about the part time gay crime guy at KTBS. He was drunk covering one of the parades. Why bring up speculation about those anchors being drunk or high? One thing has nothing to do with the other. This guy should just be let go.

At 10:47 PM, February 21, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

6:26 I don't know who posted the 2:42 comment, but what they said is true. I know because I used to work and socialize with some of these folks. I can't count the number of times I was sent next door to Queen's Lounge, or to The Cub, The Carousel, and The Summit rounding them up.

At 2:21 PM, February 22, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

"either drunk, stoned, or both"--how can those of us unfamilar with these technical terms understand? But it surely is shocking for somebody to be inebriated at a Marty Graw celebration!

At 3:07 PM, February 22, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

"Marty Graw"??? If drunks at Mardi Gras offend you then you stay away. It doesn't matter how much they try to make this a "family event" and Baptist this thing up, 75-80% of the crowds and krewes are drunk at the parade.

At 3:30 PM, February 22, 2012, Anonymous NOLA said...

@2:21 PM First of all, Mardi Gras is a Catholic celebration and you Protestants in Shreveport just don't get it. You drink to much. You eat to much. Then you abstain for Lent. I'm from New Orleans so I know what the real Mardi Gras is like and have celebrated it my entire life.

Second of all. This blog is not designed for you viewers. It is designed for those of us who work in broadcasting so naturally you will not understand all of our terminology.

I was wondering the same thing myself. Haven't heard a pep about Sherri's new PR firm. Sherri will be successful with what ever she sets her mind too.

She was doing something with the former Mudbugs hockey Muscatt? I think he's a motivational speaker for small biz. My guess is she'll be doing stuff for local community organizations, non-profits, etc. Wish her the best but these groups ain't called "non-profits" for a reason ;).
Yeah... I think she's just biding her time with "freelance" until she can find a Liz Swaine gig or get back to reading prompter at KTAL or KSLA. History repeating itself.

At 6:03 PM, February 22, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

We all understand drunk and stoned. From what I can remember none of these anchors were ever noticeably drunk. Chris Redford was noticeably drunk reporting on the parade. Ed and Crissi were the main anchors and did a fine job. They would cut away to Chris Redford looking more crazy eyed than usual at the head of the parade route. Drunk on air is not the end of the world, this does show us that any standards at KTBS are long gone.

At 7:04 PM, February 22, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well back in "the day", there were plenty of escapades influenced by either alcohol or other stuff that got out either on air or otherwise. Al Pierce didn't get the bloat-face from sipping iced tea. Anyone remember his famous newsbreak where he blew it and proclaimed: "awww this is so f#$Ked!" He got "suspended" for a few days. KTBS might've had better standards back then...but they were far from stellar. A lot... I mean a LOT of stuff went unnoticed or got ignored.

At 7:53 PM, February 22, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh yes, I remember that incident very well. I was working there when Al did that. I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the stuff they ignored all those years I was at KTBS.

At 1:50 AM, February 23, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@2:21 just so I understand, Mardi Gras is a reason to go to work and be drunk? And most of us who visit this blog work in TV. I do think being drunk and on air, as well as on station time is wrong. From what has been posted here that is what happened. It also conflicts with KTBS so called values.I didn't see it. Did they run a religous story right after the drunk gay guy reporting on the parade?

At 2:22 AM, February 23, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

They say that you can't say anything so outrageous in jest, or write a parody or satire that many people will not take seriously, but it sure is fun to try.

At 12:23 PM, February 23, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So what's the deal with the anchor/reporter position KTBS has posted? Is that advertising Jody's job, or is someone else about to leave?

At 1:57 PM, February 23, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

They could simply be trolling for resumes or looking for anchors to fill-in for extended newscasts. You have to remember that most of the folks anchoring at KTBS either are part-timers / freelancers or contract workers without long-term contracts.

At 2:04 PM, February 23, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Really? Well I can't say that doesn't surprise me, but it just goes to show how desperate people are.

I wonder if that John Denning who's leaving KNOE will take the position. They were speculating about this on the KTAL thread.

At 3:15 PM, February 23, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

are the post here about the drunk gay reporter at parade referring to Ed or Chris Redford? It is not clear which one was drunk.

At 7:14 PM, February 24, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well obviously Rod is good enough to work in this market. He's been at KTBS for 15 or 16 years.

At 7:44 PM, February 24, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

7:14 PM that's right and they hardly ever show him. Several reporters like that at KTBS. So again what other market could Rod possibly work in TV ? Those guys work for next to nothing, they are reporters because they want to be in the public eye. Nothing against Rod or Redford or anyone else there. The truth is, they are not attractive and do a mediocre job at best. If they were any good, they would not still be where they are at their ages.

At 8:09 PM, February 24, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Not necessarily. Some of us do not jump from station to station every year or two, or every time our contracts up. Some of us stay because we can, and because we want too. This is very typical in some markets.

I was channel surfing and stopped for a brief moment while they were airing the Centaur Parade. It was right aftrer the firetruck passed and Ed was saying how some people could play for the Saints b/c they were throwing the beads so well. I guess he was hit pretty hard b/c he screamed "GD" into the mic with that fruitcake voice. I immediantly hit record. My wife and I have played it for several of our friends. We are still laughing almost 3 weeks later!

I heard that and more. I watched the entire Centaur Parade and it sucked.

Hey bullshit 9:43. Why should Rod or any one go somewhere else when their family and life are here? This is something you will not understand until you are out of your 20's and have a family.

At 1:34 PM, February 25, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

hey former shreveporter the guys mentioned here(Rod and Redford) can barely keep their 10 buck an hour jobs at KTBS, muchless look to a larger market. If you are in a top 10 market and working, that's great! I would bet money if you are it is at a fox affiliate or whoever is the lowest rated in that market.

At 4:07 PM, February 25, 2012, Anonymous Former Shreveporter said...

You lost the bet. No, I do not work for a FOX affiliate. I am not on air talent either. If the on air talent at KTBS really is just making $10 an hour, they would be much better off financially going to work as managers for Taco Bell.

so called News Personalities make more than 10 an hour. Rod and Redford and the other barely there reporters make the 10 or there abouts. They are very ego driven and indeed would make more money working in fast food. Show me the money! That's why I am in sales.

At 6:00 PM, February 25, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Larger cities and markets have always paid a lot more then Shreveport. That applies to other professions as well. Several of my friends and relatives relocated to Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston. All of them are making anywhere from $10,000 to $23,000 a year more then they made here so I'll be joining them shortly to get my share.

At 7:55 PM, February 25, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'd move in a heartbeat for money like that.

At 8:20 PM, February 25, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@7:55 pm-

There are 12 states with a cost of living that is higher than that of the U.S. National average. The cost of living in Washington D.C. is also higher. The state of New York has the highest estimated cost of living in the nation by 15.24%. The state of Indiana has the lowest estimated cost of living in the United States by 10.04%.

For every $100,000 earned in Shreveport - you’ll need $142,000 to live a similar life in Fort Worth.

So, at $10,000-$23,000 you lost $$$...

8:20 PM thank you for pointing the cost of living out to these idiots. They still won't get it.

At 1:05 PM, February 26, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

While cost-of-living indices are good tools for determining / weighing benefits & advantages to working & living in a larger market; they are not the only metrics to consider. And as one who has made the move; I can only vouch for my own personal experiences on this subject.

For example, while my car insurance and housing costs increased, the quality of my work experiences improved as did my social life and so did my career networking opportunities. This resulted in being offered another (higher-paying) position with another company. Whereas in Shrevesburg, I found limited opportunities due to market size and a certain corporate inertia due to local economic factors. When it comes to the so-called "quality of life" that everyone seems to tout as the basis for staying in Shreveport-Bossier; you have to consider that not everyone finds the area so appealing. I am one of those people. Not knocking it but I enjoy a much more vibrant atmosphere that a major-metro provides. I'm not raising a family and I don't mind putting up with traffic too much either. I work with a media company and found the pace to be much more satisfying than I did in Shreveport. Let's face it, it's a small market. If that's your cup of tea, good for you. Just remember that not everyone lives for Strawn's strawberry pie, Line avenue, church on Sunday and status quo. If you like what Shreveport has to offer, congrats...you've found your niche'. As for me, I have found the benefits in Dallas far outweigh the costs as my bank account has increased dramatically since I left . Good luck to anyone who finds what they like. And you can't fault anyone who wants to take a chance so they won't have to say, I wish I tried this or that.

At 2:13 PM, February 26, 2012, Anonymous Former Shreveporter said...

Yes 8:20, you are right. The higher cost of living in other places is fact for many people, however in my case, my cost of living is actually cheaper here then it was there in Shreveport.

Apartments rents run higher, but home prices here are similar to Shreveport. The Metroplex is such a huge area there is plenty of housing stock at every price level. Like every where else some areas are way more expensive then others. This house is about 8 year old and the total payment with everything included runs a little over $700 a month.

The only thing that runs much higher then Shreveport is auto insurance. Even with that I am still making a lot more money then I ever did in Shreveport. Enough where I can put money into my 401k and IRA which is something I could not afford to do when I was in Shreveport. Plus there is no state income tax and no tax on groceries so I am doing very well and can finally afford to live without a roommate.

At 2:49 PM, February 26, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Seriously? Your playing a $700 mortgage in Dallas? I'm paying more then that in rent here.

At 10:58 AM, February 27, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Just goes to show that you can't always use statistics or "cost-of-living indexes" as the final word when it comes to living expenses. People in Shreveport seem to think it's cheaper to live here and while it may be in some cases, if you were to apply your individual lifestyle choices, maybe it isn't. The neat thing about larger metro areas is that competition is greater so you can find many affordable opportunities when it comes to housing, food, groceries, etc. Yes there are some things that do cost more, but in many cases there are things that are as affordable in Dallas as in Shreveport or moreso. If all you've ever done is go to Dallas for a weekend, you don't really know much about it. That's like people coming over here to gamble for a weekend, if all they see is the riverfront and the boardwalk; then they are only scratching the surface.

At 2:08 PM, February 27, 2012, Anonymous Former Shreveporter said...

Thats exactly what people from Shreveport and Dallas see and how they perceive the other city.

There are lots of other good points about Dallas. Like being a regional fashion center and distribution center so shopping is fantastic. There are lots of stores here that Shreveport doesn't have. Four professional sports teams, NASCAR at Texas Motor Speedway, amazing concerts, and night life. There are also tons of other attractions all over the Metroplex.
Since DFW is a hub so we can fly for significantly less then you can out of Shreveport Regional. Plus it's only a 2 1/2 hours away so I drive over and back the same day.

At 5:06 PM, February 27, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Former Shreveporter is spot-on!

People from Shreveport think DFW is all North Park, Cowboys Stadium and Galleria! I fly a lot on business and my boss has a fit whenever I turn in airfare expenses out of SHV regional airport as costs are almost double than flying out of Love Fld or DFW. I have quite a few colleagues and friends who live around DFW and they love it! As for traffic, most tell me they pretty much stay in their community-clusters most the time so it's not all that bad. In 2 years our kids will be out of high school & we're giving relocation a strong look. Big D seems to have more plusses than minuses.

At 11:25 PM, February 27, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You are so right. All of my friends and relatives in Dallas and Tarrent County pretty much stay within a 5-10 mile radius of home. I do the same thing here because I rarely leave East Shreveport except for work.

We are not waiting another decade for our kids to graduate so we've decided to move to Dallas at the end of this school year. We will miss our friends and relatives here, but like former Shrevepoter said "It's only a 2 1/2 hour drive."

You people trashing Rod's name obviously do not know him. I worked at KTBS with him a few years ago, and there is no finer human being I know. I still consider him a professional and personal mentor. The reason he may seem unknown to some of you is that he has been a photojournalist for many years there, not in front of the camera. And if you knew him you'd understand the irony of him even being in front of the camera. He stays in Shreveport because he has a family, and I know they are the reason he made the transition. It is so much easier to criticize than to do the job, so lay off. Also, as to knocking people who have gone on to other markets, you obviously don't know what you are talking about. I can immediately think of three of my former coworkers who are at one of the top stations in Atlanta, so not a bad move from Shreveport. Many others have gone on to other markets, or like myself have exited the business entirely. You obviously speak from jealousy. Why not be be happy for those who can better their lives rather than try to drag us down in the mud with you.

Yes I know, that's why I changed the subject to get people off this Rod bashing. Rob is one of the few genuinely nice people left at KTBS. He could have moved on years ago but he chose to stay here for his family.

At 8:02 PM, March 05, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Change the subject? Seems like before you posted about Rod or Rob, the only talk here for the past 2 or 3 days has been how much people like (or would like to) living in Dallas.

I tuned in to this thread and was wondering WhoTheF@$k is Rod or Rob.
Who cares?

8:02 It is obviously you have not read every comment posted on this thread so you have no idea whats going on. If you did you would know that two weeks ago there were negative comments posted on this thread about KTBS MMJ Rod White. 12:20 was responding directly to comments left in the previous post from 8:29 this morning. 12:20 also claim they changed the subject to get people off of Rod.

I was told Sherri has been "talking" with some of the folks at KSLA over the past few weeks. I guess we will see if she goes there after her year off from KTBS in a few months.

At 10:13 AM, March 06, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Really? I'm not surprised. I can totally see that happening. Sherri is very well liked and has a following so she will bring viewers with her. I can see viewers following her over to KSLA more then I can to KTAL.

At 11:16 AM, March 06, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well KSLA's ratings have slipped and has anyone really been watching their news lately? Aside from Pat's glibby -maintenance dose of valium-delivery, it's pretty lame-O. I can see James Smith getting Sherri on-air at some point. And this is typical modus operandi for Sherri...she left KTAL and sat out a couple years until she got in at KTBS, now the same is true with KSLA. Who would think prompter reading could be such a career maker.
P.S. Who cares about Rob what's-his-face?

At 11:21 AM, March 06, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes, some viewers will follow Sherri but a lot of Shreveport viewers are very station loyal. I agree with the previous post if this KSLA move does actually happen it would be a much better fit for her then moving back and down to KTAL.

At 6:55 PM, March 06, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Shoot...there are still some people tuning into KSLA wondering when Don Owen & Al Bolton will return from "vacation". The way news is done around here, I swear local folks would tune into a test-pattern if it had audio-only and occasional weather radar.

At 10:30 AM, March 07, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

And they do just that on KSLA and KTBS overnights on the weekends.

At 2:19 PM, March 07, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hah! Sherri working at KSLA would probably give her pay sticker shock considering how well she did at KTBS. Raycom cut everybody's pay when they took over and that's why a lot of people left. KSLA is Cheap-O.
She would do better to cozy up to KTAL, I hear "some" on-air people do alright but everyone else get's zilch. BTW...when she left KTAL years ago, I heard she tried to get a radio gig so she could spend more time with her kids and re-live her mom's career. When she found out the AM drive was too early, had lots more work involved (remotes & prodn) AND didn't pay squat, she tried to go back to KTAL but H. Lee Bryant said: no way, sweetie and held her to the no-compete. James Smith at KSLA doesn't have any money to spend either 'cuz Raycom is such a tightwad. I'd say her deal at KTBS was as sweet as it gets in this mkt.

At 2:43 PM, March 07, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Or it could be Sheri is taking a page from Patrick Dennis' book. Have your own production or PR company plus work at local affiliate to supplement your income. Even if things are slow with the business you still have a guaranteed salary plus full benefits with the station.

At 3:08 PM, March 07, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Seriously doubt that. Besides, Raycom/KSLA won't allow on-air talent to do anything that could conflict or create image issues. They like to have on-air folks on contract and own them so as to not worry about any extracurriculars. That's straight from corporate. So no Ivan Smith spots for Sherri if she works at KSLA.

At 3:35 PM, March 07, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Does KSLA have new directors or PA's? The reason I ask is I've been monitoring all three stations newscasts for a while and the quality of KSLA's newscasts have gone way down. Rarely do they have a single newscast without multiple on air mistakes. Now all three stations mess up equally every weekend, but KSLA's decline is very noticeable.

Just poorly trained or inexperienced folks punching the board, if you ask me. The place is a joke.

It must be and it really shows too.

At 10:54 AM, March 08, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

All the more reason that Sherri may very well end up over there.

At 12:59 PM, March 08, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

She'd have to take a pay-cut compared to what she used to make at KTBS. Don't think she'd do it unless she realizes this would probably be her last "hurrah".

At 3:16 PM, March 08, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sherri knows people at all the stations so I'm sure she already knows that. I wonder how much of a pay cut Patrick took when he left KSLA and wound up back at KTAL?

At 4:00 PM, March 08, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Maybe its worth the pay cut just to be away from KTBS.

At 9:34 PM, March 08, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Patrick has aged a lot since he came back to KTAL. Guess working early AM Weather and doing freelance vids must keep him running.

At 9:03 AM, March 09, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Patrick started aging long before he left KSLA. Remember he has been here about 25 years and everyone ages over a 25 years period.

So anyone heard any new rumors on Sherri this week? She still talking to KSLA or is she talking to KTAL again?

Trying to save a buck or two and you end up with unprofessional embarrassing f*#k ups like what happened last night. That wouldn't have happened if we were still there. Oh well, you get what you pay for. Or in this case, what you don't pay for.

Isn't that the truth. I recorded it and just now watched it on TiVo so now I see what everyones talking about. If anything like that happened when all of us were there someone would have been fired by now.

At 5:31 PM, March 10, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Thats so true and they have done that many times. Remember when Josh in master control fell asleep in the chair and the station was in black for like three hours during sweeps? They fired him that same day.

At 8:37 PM, March 10, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh KTBS's answer to this is just run the crap out of make-goods to placate any bitchy advertisers. In fact you have to wonder if the advertisers paid attention or made any fuss given this clueless market.

At 12:43 PM, March 13, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Have you seen the new "image/branding" spots on KTBS? They start off with someone doing a report like on an arts performance and pull out to show it's on a portable device. Funny thing is the background shows someone "pretending" to play a violin. Fingers on neck aren't moving at all.
And I wish they would lose the "Ed Walsh" spot...he's smiling uncomfortably with teeth clenched and with a "I gotta Pee bad" look on his face. It's hilarious. Doesn't anyone at KTBS have any skill in picking up on this shit?
Apparently not.
Oh and please stop showing Jan Elkins.... my kids scream and leave the room everytime a promo pops up with her in it.

At 3:31 PM, March 13, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If thats the case your kids easily scared. Jan is one of the most genuinely nicest persons you will ever meet. How she has been able to survived at KTBS for 30 years is beyond me.

At 3:58 PM, March 13, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree with a few of 12:43's comments. Those new image spots need to be scrapped. And that Ed spot drives me nuts. I saw that untrimmed Ed spot in nGCB someone posted about the other day. I used to see stuff like that all the time on KTAL, but not on KTBS. What gives? Does KTBS have a bunch of new hires, or are you just not cross checking your spots?

At 5:16 PM, March 13, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I've been wondering the same thing. KTBS has gotten noticeable sloppy over the past year or so. Its surprising they are #1 in the market with all these visible "mess" ups.

Charlie Hadlock tried to get things fixed in the newsroom because of her mismanagement, but because she's soooo loved by the Wrays, Charlie got the axe.
You may like her...but there's a lot of folks who don't and for good reason.

At 7:09 PM, March 13, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Like Jan Elkins or not, she is ugly and should not be on air. Wasn't she pulled from the air years ago because she is so ugly? It does seem KTBS may ber wising up and hiring better looking people. I see less and less of Rod and almost no Chris Redford. That's a good thing in my book.

At 8:56 PM, March 13, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

As they say: She's got a face for radio. Like it or not, TV is about appearances and viewers prefer to watch people who are better looking than average. Unless you're a moderator on "Face the Nation", you better have your A-game looks-wise.
As a woman, I'm surprised at poor wardrobe choices by TV types. Jan is in serious need of a total makeover.
Maybe it's cruel to some but TV is what it is. I'm a sales rep and if my clothing is distracting, it can affect the sale.

At 9:13 PM, March 13, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hadlock landed on his feet and has a much better gig working for NBC then he did at KTBS.

Some of these so call "good looking" people we have now and over the past few years are as dumb as they can be. How they made it through J school is a mystery.

At 9:21 PM, March 13, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Reading these comments I keep hearing the old O'Jay's song Backstabbers playing over and over in my head. "They smile in your face. All the time they want to take your place. The backstabbers. Backstabbers."

At 7:50 AM, March 14, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

8:56 is correct. Television reporting is 90% appearance. Competence counts for very little. What has been said about Jan Elkins could also be said about Judy Wagonner.

At 11:10 AM, March 14, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

7:50 AM & 8:56 are both spot on. TV is mostly about appearances & first impressions. I worked in PR dept at an ad agency for years. We subscribed to a media consultancy that did focus groups on local news and it was amazing the things viewers noted. Women are by far more critical of appearances and notice the subtle things whereas men are all about "the sweet young thangs". But when it comes to liking older anchors & newspeople, women have it tougher and those older ladies of the air who were liked better took care with their image in taking cues from older network counterparts who had classy and not brassy looks. From that perspective Elkins is a mess. Waggoner needs to tone down the 80's Suzanne Somers look as High Def really accentuates those disco looks. Maybe a more natural look without as much mascara and war-paint. I remember the consultant telling us that the 80's are over yet local TV types just can't get past that look. The lesson learned is that your wardrobe and make-up shouldn't upstage your on-air performance. But then again, this is the land of "Billy the Exterminator" and "Bayou Billionaires" where Avon & Mary Kay reign supreme!

At 4:36 PM, March 14, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Someone earlier commented on KTBS having a lot of on air mess ups and asked if that was due to new hires. Does anyone know if thats whats going on or not? I see them happening on KTBS all the time.

At 8:45 PM, March 14, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's a combination of people not being trained or rushing together a newscast without sweating the details. Also could be that people call in sick all the time and so someone has to fill in at the last minute as far as punching a newscast.
BTW....they don't punch a board like in the old days, it's computer programmed and as they say: garbage in / garbage out.

At 9:06 PM, March 14, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Plus the fact KTBS now has one person doing the jobs it used to take 5 or 6 people to do. So much for automation.

I was just on the KTBS web site and see they finally filled 7 of the 9 positions they had posted for several months. They still have an anchor/reporter position posted. Any word as to who is leaving next?

At 11:37 AM, March 16, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well 2 things come to mind concerning Dan "Bobble-head" Walters:
#1: He spends too much time in a tanning booth
#2: Since the spot production is probably tossed in the deal as "Free", the camera-op probably had the camera filtered for daylight instead of tungsten . . . so the warmer tungsten light really shows the orange values when the camera sees "daylight".

Just a hunch. But ya gets what ya "pay for".... oh and BTW...Yew Cum Zee Us! (point and then upper body shakes a bit resulting in bobble-headed action and then FADE TO BLACK!

Snooky's dad? Good one 6:31. I'm going to have to start using that.

Yeah that First Baptist Bossier spot is way over done. Looked like the opening for one of the Left Behind movies. Would not be surprised if they bought that and put in the graphics, or if they actually produced it in house. They have the ability to do it. With all of the egos and GCB's there you never know.

What just happened on the 5:30 weekend newscast? The show opened and you hear Judy saying "go back go back" and she sits there for about 15-20 seconds before she starts talking. VERY sloppy!

I saw that. It was a rough start but the rest of the show was fine.

Anybody?

I noticed that too, saw something earlier today. A newer station image spot showing their anchor people and having something about the "most turned to station in the ArkLaTex"

KSLA has been running those "most watched" spots for three or four weeks now.

So what are the qualifiers for this statement? Most watched as in total history since they went on the air?
OR Most watched total cume audience?
OR Most watched by anything with eyeballs including goldfish, dogs, cats, goats & chickens?
WTF? Anyone have any qualitative to show us instead of promo bullshit & hype?

At 11:51 AM, March 23, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

All the above. KTBS, KSLA, and KTBS have been doing it for years. You find one little thing your station is #1 with and you run with it. The first in HD. The first in election or weather coverage. The first to get our election and weather POP spots on the air. Stupid crap like that.

What just happened with Rhonda? Her weather block was a mess.

At 11:48 AM, March 26, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Who at KTBS keeps messing up the spot transfers? The Regions Bank spot that just aired wasn't trimmed and still had the slate on it. This is the 3rd or 4th untrimmed spot I've seen in the past two weeks.

At 11:56 AM, March 28, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

They had a similar spot with Joe Haynes. Trying hard to sincerely smile at the camera for an uncomfortably long time. Whoever put these promos together doesn't have much finesse regarding branding or image. Kinda amateurish branding reminiscent of community-college TV branding.

At 3:27 PM, March 28, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, kind of. I've seen better branding on BPCC TV.

Yeah...it's funny. You can have all the newest, neatest, latest high-tech toys with all the bells & whistles, HD grfx, 5.1 Dolby, super-duper HD cams with billions of pixels and fancy-schmancy sets...but if you don't have a clue about creating a message and execution of same, you might as well run colorbars or weather radar with a lower-3rd bug.
Best investment a station can make is in the brains of the people whose responsibilities is to communicate effectively. Subtlety isn't lost on the public. Management may think so but even stupid people recognize amateur-looking junk when they see it.

At 6:01 PM, April 14, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wow...talk about a thread taking different twists and turns. Started out as a post on Sherri Talley starting her own media company (fancy for "freelance") to the sad ol' Bob Griffin looking like the Crypt-Keeper to drunk-Gay reportage at Mardi Gras parades to cost-of-living comparisons of Shreveport to Dallas to KTBS on-air staff looking ugly or wardrobe challenged to air-staff in need of makeovers to crappy image promos on KTBS... WHEW! Just curious but any updates on Mizz Talley's Media Empire? Has she been in talks with Oprah or KSLA or KTAL? Figured we'd hear more about the original topic of this thread.
This gets sooo confusing!!

At 11:08 PM, April 16, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well, I saw Sherri at the Kroger store last Wednesday, and what I have to say about her is that she is a raving beauty. The television camera simply does not protray how pretty she is in person. I wanted to say "Hello!" and smile at her, but I did not want to bother her, and some woman already had her attention and they were talking at full steam, then when she got away from that woman, she took off with her buggy as though she was late for something. A shame that just because someone is on TV, he or she can not do simple things like buy groceries without being bothered by strangers.

At 11:44 AM, April 18, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Raving beauty? Guess it's all in the eyes of the beholder. I mean she's cute and all but no Robin Meade. But as for dealing with former fans, it comes with the territory. Sherri has always been approachable. Other former anchor-divas...not so much. I saw former TV anchors Liz Swaine and Sylvia Rachal act put upon when people recognized them in public. But if you're some A-lister in Shreveport, Liz will always be all smiles & schmooze. But Jane & Joe 6 pack? Fuggitaboutit!

P.S. Heard from a reliable source that Sherri took up part-time lawn service work after she left United Way. Said it was even mentioned on her social media too. It didn't last and so she started this media biz. Others have mentioned that she's had visits with other local TV stations. Could be she'll show up either at KSLA or KTAL maybe after her no-compete expires?

At 10:52 AM, April 19, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Since KSLA is more stable, and is the only local news station Sherri has not worked at, I can see her going to work there before I see her going back to KTAL.

6:01 That is nothing new. If you look at almost any thread on this blog you will see that it rarely stays on subject.

It's a Raycom branding-thing as it seems they do this in other markets as well. Kind of a self-stroke because they really never call anyone out on stuff (i.e. local corruption, idiot politicians, etc.). In fact KSLA could stand for:

Keeps
Soft on
Local
Authorities

They rarely follow-up on anything remotely investigative, especially if it were to question Mayor Glover's administration 'cuz that might piss Heavy G off. And U sure don't want to upset any local movers & shakers.
NoSirrEE!

I've seen too much "reporting" and not enough "news/journalism" on local TV. Whenever I see local TV news promote they offer "coverage I can count on" or "on your side" or "news that matters most"... I gag. There really is very little value in watching local TV news outside of weather and the occasional local disaster. I get fed up with local "news readers" as they glibly blather on stories without offering much context, analysis or real reportage. Local news is more about rehashing local press releases from bureaucrats ranging anywhere from the school board to the mayor's office to the city council to whatever quasi-gov't. agency is pushing to justify their salaries and/or agendas. It's a real waste of time and they wonder why viewership is dropping.

If you feel that strongly about it you should contact the General Managers directly and the actual station owners Raycom Media out of Montgomery Alabama who own KSLA, Nexstar Broadcasting out of Irving Texas who own KTAL, and the Wray family who own KTBS.

Hah! Contacting the Wrays or the Retirement System of Alabama cohorts (i.e. Raycom) and discussing the poor state of news at their properties is like pissing up a rope. The only thing any of these folks cares about is profit...profit...profit. It shows in their product and is reflected in the declining audience shares of local TV.

Then organize a boycott of their advertisers.

Doubt we'll see Sherri on air again anytime soon. She got remarried recently to a banker. I'd guess she'll wind up going the way of Karin Adams.

Most probably. Either that or become the spokeswoman for some civic group or organization she. Or through her PR company she may possibly start doing commercials like Jennifer from 3, Tony and Patrick from 12 are doing.

Honey, if I had as much money as Karen Adams I wouldn't work either. It's a full time job raising all those kids and running a 10,000 sqft mansion.

Turns out she's changed gigs again and is working with this company now.

Karin Adams worked like maybe 3 hours a day at KSLA reading teleprompter. Her TV gig was more of a social accessory than a career. Hubby Greg is a corporate attorney for one of the utility companies, guess all his time as a Senator in Baton Rouge got him in with the right folks.

Greg, and the entire Barrow family were rich long before he and Karin ever meet and got married. Of course Greg's contacts as a State Senator helped him out. Remember that for profit teen psych hospital the Barrow's owned in that old mansion across from St. Marks on Fairfield @ E. Kings where that nice bank is located now? There were some serious"irregularities" going on there that should have landed them in prison. Those problem went away.

Saw Greg not long ago, guy has aged quite a bit since I last saw him. I think Karin is still working on her backhand in tennis and playing party host at the occasional social gala.

Nice work if you can get it. I saw them during holidays and your right, Greg has aged a lot. I actually did not recognize him at first.

Karin Adams. I haven't heard that name in quite some time. Nice enough lady but very blonde, blonde, blonde. Her talent was in getting the anchor job and staying away from the station as much as possible. Truly what one would call "talent".

So true. That really pissed off a lot of people including me, but we were #1 all those years Karin and Carl were co-anchors.

So what is Sherri's new last name, and who is her new hubby?
