Longtime KTHV Anchor Retires Friday

Source: KTHV.com Veteran Little Rock newscaster Anne Jansen will retire from broadcasting February 1st after a 25-year career. Since 1982, she has anchored and reported her entire career for Today’s THV.

This week, well-known Arkansans are honoring her 25 years of service with personal farewell messages to Anne. You can see those video messages on Today's THV at 6 and on todaysthv.com. Click on the THVideo icon to the right to view those messages.

After a lifetime of news events and stories, Jansen said the time has come for more family life.

“For the immediate future, I plan on spending less time in front of a mirror, rediscovering the joys of reading for pleasure, and cooking without a microwave. I’ll help my sons with their homework, and may even manage to clean out a few closets,” said Jansen.

Someone said on the 5:00 show that to be a stay-at-home-mom was a calling.

A "calling" is a mom who works two jobs to support her kids.

Anne Jansen is so beautiful and was a pleasure to work with. Good luck to her in her future!

Did anyone actually watch her final newscast and did you celebrate or cry at the end?

At 10:07 AM, February 02, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

A real calling is deciding to not have children because a career keeps the parent(s) away from them. Too many people think parenting should be like any other activity that gets entered into the calendar. And so many wonder why kids are growing up with so many problems these days?

At 11:24 AM, February 02, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

What I don't get is...she wasn't gone from her kids but three or four hours a day, at most. And they are school-age. They're not home during the day. Most people would want to be home with them when they are babies and toddlers. Then they go back to work. This is the reverse.

Did anyone catch that they misspelled Larry Audas' name last night during the on-air Anne tribute? They spelled it "Audus." I wonder how that went over..or if anyone even noticed.

At 12:59 AM, February 03, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So does anyone know who's replacing Anne? Is it Audas? Is it going to be just Liz and Dawn at 5, 6 and 10, or is someone going to start on Monday or some point in the near future?

Inquiring minds want to know.

No one for at least a few months. Right now Gannett is getting the spit kicked out of them because their stock keeps plummeting. So Far they have saved around 300K in salaries since December of last year with Andy, Anne and Robyn leaving. At the end of the day Larry looks really good to Gannett for saving that money. Probably will not see an Anchor at least until May or later.

Well, the graphics operator nearly got it right. What do you expect? You know someone always double checks the graphics before airing. Oh, my, this was on tape wasn't it.

At 11:49 PM, February 03, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Larry's name being misspelled was noticed. No one got in trouble for it. At least not publicly. It wasn't the fault of Graphics or Editing.

At 9:59 AM, February 04, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Is Larry doing his own inserts now? If "they" can't spell the GM's name correctly, how are we to believe they will correctly spell the names of people "they" don't know.

Who is they?

At 12:47 PM, February 04, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

How could it not be the fault of graphics? Presumably, everyone who works there should know how to spell the GM's name, even if it was give incorrectly to graphics. Seems like that person would have corrected it himself or herself.

Courtney Timmons should move to the morning show on KARK and replace what's there. Actually, she is the best Sportscaster in the market.

At 4:35 PM, February 05, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sorry, but Melissa is the reason I watch in the mornings.

On the Jansen departure; it was weird. It didn't move me in the slightest other than noticing how unbelievably large Larry's forehead is. It's much bigger than I remember. If we put screws in his neck, he could be dancing "Puttin' on the Ritz."

I noticed that Anne never said in her taped goodbye that they ended the show with anything like, "thanks for all your support," and the usual drivel. She said it's "time to be a wife and mom." What has she been doing up until now other than be a part-timer and drop her kids off with the nanny while she works out at LRAC?

Well, I'm sure she doesn't miss this blog. She's a nice lady, average broadcaster, and enough people like her that she must have something going for her. Best of luck to Anne Jansen.

At 4:49 PM, February 05, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Maybe Larry should hire Katherina for Anne's replacement. The girl has alot of drive! She would be at the top of the station in record time!

At 6:59 PM, February 05, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Only a member of Katherina's family could have written that comment. The girl looks like a deer in the headlights on camera and her voice is almost intolerable. Say what you want about Anne, but there is no way you are going to replace her 25 years' worth of on-camera poise and ability with a newbie like Katherina. Yes, she's a minority, and that is absolutely ALL she has going for her.

At 7:02 PM, February 05, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

They need a MALE replacement for Anne. This all-girl thing they have going on the anchor desk is just plain weird. Dawn and Liz are an odd match, too. They should find a really good male co-anchor for Dawn. That's what they need.

At 8:57 PM, February 05, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The new system that THV uses is producer-driven. The producers there input their own supers into the system. Any improperly spelled words in almost any graphic or super now, is a fault of the producer. They even have forms for suspect shots, Amber Alerts, even 1st Birthdays.

It doesn't surprise me that Larry's name was spelled wrong. All you have to do is watch the morning show and look at the bottom of the screen. Pathetic. Next time, hire someone with an 8th grade education.

At 9:28 PM, February 05, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

But Larry's segment was TAPED. Even if the producer put the super in wrong, why did someone not catch it before it aired? You can pass the buck all day long.

At 11:17 PM, February 05, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree about the male part--didn't they have that at one point and were doing well in the ratings? That whole thing is still a move that confuses anyone who watches local TV.

Tonight's election was painful on 11. Every--EVERY--person in the field was a rookie woman! Everytime I switched to 11, Dawn was talking. Liz looked like a spectator. Then to have the newbie sitting on the set with her ballcap like she'd been in the elements; what a crock!

Same for KARK. Will someone please shut the Clausen guys' mouth. Please pull him aside, stick a needle in him to let out some of that hot air and as a bonus, let some of that ego drain. Poor Jancey would try to get a word in edge wise and Mr. Cool would take over or mumble so loud that I couldn't understand either of them. It doesn't make you look like anchor-in-charge, Bob.

I mean, Bob look at your question about the Fajita scale to the bewildered weathermen. Instead of giving us a condescending lesson about your lack of knowledge on how the scale works, how about "Do you think there will be F2's and higher when they look at the damage tomorrow?"

Notice 7's not on the radar here. A sad night when 7 doesn't dominate the weather. Used to be no one could even get close. What happened on Main?

No I don't work there, but I may have to give the nod tonight for all-around best package to 16 although I liked 4's coverage the best. KLRT seems to have a good idea of what's enough.

Larry's segment was taped, but the super was put in live. The super wasn't burned into the video.

I think 11's coverage was the best. I thought they moved pretty seamlessly from person to person in the field, and their website was awesome...livestream video, live radar. Yes, Dawn did dominate on the anchor desk, but she has a lot more experience than Liz..Dawn should be taking the lead. And before you start...no, I don't work there.

At 2:13 PM, February 06, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Uh, it's not quite "live" radar. Can't be.

COMMENT OF THE WEEK, MAYBE MONTH

As said by Ebone Monet on KARK-TV:

"The building was almost completely destroyed."

Just think about that statement.

At 3:48 PM, February 06, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

BTW, Ebonet works for KTHV. As far as coverage is concerned. Lose Liz and put her in the field. As an anchor she's the weakest link in the ENTIRE market. As a reporter she's one of the strongest. You have to have some adlib ability and Liz didn't have it last night or really ever. Dawn did. Larry is too hung up on the diversity thing and his ratings will suffer. Worst yet, he'll blame everyone else for his screw-ups. I'm sure Liz is a nice enough individual, but she only has NE Arkansas anchor ability.

Ed did a great job - kept it easy to understand and to the point without getting to complicated. KATV sounded too much like they were calling a football game. KLRT - really who watches?"This is American Idol" So what if your house is getting blown away? KARK - I see that Chief Met Mike Francis had to come in and save Brett's butt yet again.

Alright, 2:13, if you want to be a nitpicking sh*thead about it, fine. Whatever. Radar can't be "live." I just meant that it was available at the top of 11's website. You must be tired and irritable from working so hard last night.

Well, at least he/she does not have to resort to junior high language to try and get their point across. You should look in a mirror.

And, the poster may be tired and irritable, but correct. It can't be live, but it sounds good to those that don't know.

At 9:44 PM, February 06, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey, we were all hungry after working late. I had fajita's on the brain all day. Mike Francis doesn't blow his horn about it, but I've deduced that he is easily the most educated meteorologist in the market. He didn't sign-up for some correspondence course in Mississippi, pay $30 and call himself an expert like virtually every other weather geek in town.
Ned repeats what the weather service says, Barry is energetic yet in the same mindset. Buckner thinks he knows everything about weather and uses his "aw shucks" front to hide his belief that he's what's keeping it together at 11. You don't notice a back-up meteorologist at 11, do you? There's a reason; it's called the Buckner Block. Brett sounds like he should be on an infomercial and the KLRT guy never gets to blather on because 13 actually realizes it doesn't have to repeat the same thing over and over and over and over. They may not get the most credit, but who says you have to talk about the same weather facts for three hours while a major election is going on? I'm not trying to dismiss the loss of life, but don't tell me TV folks really think how long you're on the air equals commitment and competance. Eleven suffered because they hurt Liz Massey's credibility, made Dawn look like an air-hog bee-atch, and had a collective nine moths of experience reporting in the field. Who care if they moved "seemlessly" between shots and tosses--did you notice the reporters sucked?!

Who is replacing Anne?
Hope it's not Mike. He sucks even though they are desperately in need of a male anchor on weekdays.

Dawn probably wants to take it and stop anchoring the 10.

I don't think Liz is a weak anchor. I think she is one of the best.

and no of course Katherina isn't stepping up any time soon. I'm not being mean, she will get better with time and there isn't necessarily anything wrong with her now especially if she really is doing all her own editing and shooting.

I think Ebone needs just as much work or more and I heard this isn't her first job. She acts green and looks bored on the air

THV seems to need some help

I hear Katherina doesn't do all her own shooting. Don't know about the editing. I hear she gets a lot of help.

Who has interviewed to replace Ann? Will Larry go with another all female team?

At 11:29 AM, February 16, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Larry will go for CHEAP! If he can get an anchor for less than 50K, he'll hire that person.

There is no hurry for a male anchor. Gannett is having some serious money problems right now in light of THV bringing in 25 to 28 million in sales. Most of that money goes straight to corporate. Look for more cuts in the next couple of years.

Liz is an ok anchor. She works hard but is in the position she is in because they can pay her next to nothing. Mike is the same way. Dawn on the other hand is the main news anchor. Dawn will move to 5 and 6pm and Liz will anchor the 10pm news. As far as talent is concerned Larry wouldn't recognize real talent if it slapped him in the face. Has anyone been able to catch the reports of the new reporter Kattie? She's a natural. If given the chance, she will become a strong reporter/anchor in the next few years. She's already 10 times better than Ebone and Katherina and almost as good as the reporters that have been at THV for years. I think that Charles C. looks like a young Andy Pearson. Maybe they should let him Anchor the news.

At 1:04 PM, February 16, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't think they will take Dawn off the 10PM. They do pretty well at 10PM, and I don't think they are going to mess with that by leaving Liz alone there. I'm sure Dawn would like to pull an Anne and work three hours a day and only do the 5 and 6, though.

At 1:10 PM, February 16, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Kattie is way better than Ebone, and especially Katherina. Ebone looks bored out of her mind, like she'd rather be someplace else (and I wish she were, too). Katherina has a terrible voice and delivery. Kattie does have presence on-air and seems more experienced than the other two, even if she's not.

At 6:53 AM, February 17, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's in her deal to get off of the 10pm news. Just watch.

At 12:44 PM, February 17, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well, it would make sense. She probably hates being away from the kid in the evenings. They're headed toward the exact same thing they had with Anne...someone who works 3 hours a day and breeds incredible resentment among the rest of the staff because of the short hours and all that money. I'll bet Dawn was practically shoving Anne out of the door.

At 6:48 PM, February 17, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

They're putting a lot of stock in Dawn to be the "savior." Hell, Liz had better ratings last February when Dawn was on baby leave.

The 10pm will still be good. The 5 and 6 pm shows will still suck.

Ed will still wine about doing live shots and Craig will be Craig.

Larry will continue to bleed the place dry by overworking producers and not replacing reporters. And, by not getting a new anchor on by May, will have saved Gannett over 300k in collective salaries with Andy, Robyn and Anne leaving. But wait there's more.... more work that is for EVERYONE with less pay.

Larry got a very nice Christmas bonus by saving all of that jack, while his reporters are pulling down about 22k a year. It's repulsive to say the least.

Don't foreget Robyn had a cush deal by coming in at 4:55am and leaving at 8am. She was home before most folks start their day.

25 years is a long time in the market. I think Ned has 25 years plus here as well as BJ - in terms of being on-air.

At 2:55 AM, February 18, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I was never impressed by Anne. She is an average looking middle age woman who had no enthusiasm and didn't come across as a real journalist.

At 9:39 AM, February 18, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think part of the problem with this situation is the idea that a woman is going to feel the same way about her job after she has kids. Your priorities change..or they should, anyway. And yet people like Dawn and Anne (neither of whom need the money) will persist in a job that requires long hours, and evenings and weekends away from home. But they don't want that part of the job. They want the glory and the money, but not the work and the long hours. So they get these neat little deals carved out for themselves...things that don't apply to others on staff that have families and bills to pay. And then people like Anne and Dawn wonder why people resent them.

At 4:28 PM, February 18, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If you were a nurse, and then had a baby and returned to nursing duty, would they let you only work half your shift, but make the same amount of money, or more, than those who work a regular shift? If you were a bank president or a teacher or a sales rep, would you be allowed to work a few hours a day and still be paid the same? No, and women who have kids return to these jobs afterward and pull the same amount of work as everyone else.
