The "Who cares? It's just Northwest Arkansas" mentality will get you in trouble with $$$. Don't forget - this TV stuff is a business. How much new money is coming into the River Valley?

At 8:05 AM, January 18, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Mothing really new. KFSM is the overall player and beyond dominate in the South and KNWA leads in NWA. The only really change is that KHBS/KHOG continues to lose both sides to the other players and that gap is getting bigger.

You couldn't be more wrong. Mary is more like AB used to be. I hear Mary is from a "twig part of tulSA". Watch out when there is no make-up!

How did Ashley Beck "used to be"?

Does anyone have any pics of Mary Marsh when she was a Razorback cheerleader?

You'd prefer working in a much smaller market? And the smaller paychecks that come with a smaller market?

At 12:11 PM, January 19, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

How did AB used to be? What kind of comment is that. Define "twig part of tusla?" I thought Mary was a Little Rock girl.

Anyway she is not a wild one. In Church to much to be wild.

At 9:07 AM, January 20, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

To answer the above poster's question, Ashley Beck is known as a reformed party gal. When she first started, there was a new story with her name in it each week about hot relationships with a main anchor, and PIOs. That's in addition to stories about getting wasted between live shots (Rheem Classic, anyone?).

Beck is a different woman now, I hear...with Sara Lasure's ex boyfriend and a part-time job at Dillard's.

At 6:42 PM, January 20, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You know, THAT is the real tragedy of KFSM. One of their most well known on air personalities having to work a second job. That has always been the case with that station, the people downstairs earn the money, but very little of makes it downstairs. Guess that's ONE way to keep your on air talent from gaining weight.

At 8:43 PM, January 20, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The paychecks in markets 100+ don't get much smaller without violating the minimum wage.

Maybe it should say "KARK-TV passes KFSM" since 90% of KNWA's stories come straight from little rock. Can a tv station do any less than KNWA does and claim any kind of ratings lead???

At 10:29 AM, January 21, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I know a lot about all three stations. KFSM pays the least, KHOG pays the most and KNWA offers the most perks.

For KNWA, expect more interesting and insightful stories that require unique newsgathering. Don't expect to see too many PIOs spewing the same information you can find on the competition.

For KFSM, expect robotic and dragged out reporting. Worst news product on this side of the Mississippi, but look at their ratings.

For KHOG, expect the same reporter on live shots for 5, 6 and 10 five days a week, often on a story they didn't get sent on until late in the day. It can be done, but look at their ratings.

At 11:45 AM, January 21, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

>For KNWA, expect more interesting and insightful stories that require unique newsgathering. Don't expect to see too many PIOs spewing the same information you can find on the competition.<

Oh please. None of the local stations do "insightful" stories. Interesting is one thing, but NDs don't give the reporters time to do anything deep enough to be insightful.

Unless you're counting Team Neile as "insightful."

At 2:22 PM, January 21, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ho-HUMM, is there any other news beside this? Really, who cares! People in the River Valley watch little NWA news and vice versa.
I agree with splitting up the stations and allowing NWA to show only NWA news to their people and the River Valley and Eastern Oklahoma folks can enjoy their news from their area once again. Maybe this will HUSH the whiners up!

If any of you 40 and 24 folks were capable of looking at another station in an unbiased manner, you'd realize that you're getting schooled almost nightly.

Unfortunately, it's so hard to find someone who can take a look at their competition and say anything decent... those are the people that would rather tear someone else down than improve themselves.

And the official county-by-county numbers for WashBenMad from Nielsen puts KNWA at the bottom. Maybe Arkansas Business did their own analysis, but from what it looks like DMA wide, the Nielsen numbers ring truer.

Call the 5ers bumpkins, hayseeds... whatever. We're kicking your ass and looking good doing it.

How does Ashley Beck look in person?

I'm sure alot of people are surprised to see her at Dillards.

She must need the money to make those house payments.

Looks like she has a great rack (in the commercial with her and her dog).

You can do any research you want to. It seems that you are the one who cannot deal with the fact that you all may have slipped in the numbers. You can't look at your competition and realize there is something good there. Why is it so hard to realize that all three stations have strengths? The numbers do not say KNWA was on top across the board, just at 10 like in previous months. Get over it, 40/29 and KNWA don't suck as bad as most would like. All the stations have something good and appealing to people or else we would all be out of a job.

At 10:40 PM, January 21, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The article is vague, but it looks like things remain about the same in the FSM/NWA market. Since 5 rebounded in ratings two or three years ago, it has pretty much wound up like this in every book.

As far as salaries go, all three (4 if you count the Fox) stations in the market pay below market scale.

At 12:53 PM, January 22, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Dale Cox turned KFSM around in the ratings and the first place status continues. Good leadership will go a long ways in the television business.

Personally I will find the ratings a years and a half from now very interesting. Once the analog transmitters all shut off, and the vast majority of KFSM's antiquated viewers can no longer pick of 5 with their rabbit ears, I think the whole picture will change.

At 11:45 PM, January 22, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

They will still be able to get Channel 5 with no problem. There will be cheap converters all over the place for people to plug into their old tvs.

" Antiquted viewers? You mean the ones in the 25-54 demo that 5 has dominated for 3 years now? "

Yeah with 82% being 45-54. Young adults think KFSM looks old and obviously if you watch you would agree.

At 9:34 AM, January 23, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes, KFSM looks very 80s. Putting new graphics over an old ass set doesn't fix the problem.

At 11:56 PM, January 23, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Frankly, I'll take 45-54 year old viewers all day long and then some. Those are the people with the money to actually buy the things we advertise. Duh.

Local television as it exists today will be dead in ten years anyway, long before the viewers die off.

At 11:59 PM, January 23, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

All of the stations in the market look either 80s (or worse) or college level (or worse).

The entire market is behind the curve in terms of equipment, format, graphics, salary scale, etc.

All of which probably explains why the total number of people actually watching news in the market (on all stations combined) is so low.

At 1:52 AM, January 24, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Darren Bobb does not look like he is in the 80's. Are you people crazy?

Darren is one of the most modern looking news anchors in the market.

He could easily be in market 10 or 20

Wow. Nice of you to join us Darren! I am sorry to bring you back to reality but you fit in soperfectly in market 100+...and so does your chin(s).

At 10:38 AM, January 24, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I used to be distracted with Daren's chin, but I actually think he's a great anchor. You don't watch him because of his looks...it's his personality that should reel you in. He seems like the fat guy everyone likes. I watch 5 for Garrett and Daren. They're awesome!

Ooohhh...and I like Mike Irwin too!

At 5:22 PM, January 24, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

D.B. is a good guy and there is some good talent here and there on all of the stations, but the market is still way behind the times. Sooner or later the stations are going to have to spend some money to modernize.

Darren Bobb is a good dude.

My biased take:

Its not all "the Ashleys" that rake in all the ratings @ 5. I thinks its the Sara/Tara combo, what hottie reporters they are! Sara Lasure is numero uno in my book.

40/29 no comment, I hate 90% of their talent. Fox 24 is that even on the air?

Jared Broyles is the real reason KFSM is number one

At 2:22 PM, January 26, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Do you guys think Jared Broyles is better than Daren Bobb? Personally, I believe Jared should be the main anchor. He connects with viewers by making cute comments after each story.

For instance, if Jared reads a story about children making a snowman -- he will follow it by saying, "that looks like a lot of fun".

People love it when Jared does that.

At 4:02 PM, January 26, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

People also like Jared Broyles because he is a real man's man.

Hello people this is simple, KFSM does so well because of less botched WINNTTER STOORRM! predictions. KFSM has more hotties on their air than any other station, pure and simple.

KFSM has a triple threat that consists of Russell Jones, Frank Wiley and Gary Elskin.

The market has never seen such a talented trio of young men, and it doesn't hurt that they are all so very handsome!

Absolutely 100% right on. KFSM has a flawless (wink*wink) strategy that involves doing nothing great but doing everything just good enough to just barely keep the audience. There is no specific area where KFSM has an advantage. You might would think weather would be the one area they would hold a lead but no not even there. Their morning and weekend weather people more than cancel out what Mr. Lewis brings to the table. Both KNWA and 40/29 hold huge advantages in sports over KFSM. Sara Lasure is the best thing KFSM has and outside of her and maybe the new Ashley, well they just don't have any talent.

At 11:50 PM, January 28, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't see why people think Lasure is the best thing since sliced bread. Even Mallory Hardin beat her to the punch in jumping markets. Even that should say something!

At 1:50 PM, January 29, 2008, Anonymous I'm Watching You said...

Between the overall decline of coverage in the Fort Smith area and the generally bland packaging of the newscasts, I hardly watch any of the local stations for news. My wife likes 5, and I can watch it because it grates on my nerves the least.

All in all, 5 is like watching tapioca, 40/29 is mostly unwatchable, and 24/51 is just puzzling.

Tiffany Stewart is the best female anchor in the market, Bridget is a close second. I wouldn't really put any of the male anchors in a "best" list, but Daren Bobb is the most appealing. Jared Broyles is insufferable.

Garrett Lewis and Dan Skoff run neck and neck, but I'm in love with Kendra Kent. Frank Wiley needs some coaching on his presentation, but he's a sharp writer.

24/51 have/has (whatever) the slickest package, but it's hampered by a haphazard approach to the news. Maybe their new News Director can help, but since was bumped up from Assignment Editor, I don't have much hope.

The best thing to to do is read a newspaper.

Frank Wiley a sharp writer? It sounds like he has a thesaurus next to his desk, and that's not a good thing.

I will never forget in one package he said, "oozing with adjulation."

Who the heck lets stuff like that hit the air?

At 6:09 AM, January 30, 2008, Anonymous I'm watching you said...

Craig Cannon, through no fault of his own, is past his expiration date. The anchor on 51, whose name I can't recall off the top of my head, comes across as smug and indifferent.

Yes, I do think Frank Wiley is a sharp writer. He's going beyond the AP Stylebook and putting a bit more effort into what he says. Sometimes he falls flat, but it's usually above standard.

I'm hoping Adria Goins is being groomed to take Mike Irwin's place. He looks tired.
