Former KNWA Anchor Leaving NWA for Gig on the East Coast

An e-mailer let ATN know, "On ArkansasTonight.com former KNWA anchor and managing editor Don Elkins announced he is leaving Northwest Arkansas to take a job on the east coast. With his leaving KFAY-AM will now be looking for a morning anchor and Arkansas Tonight, Elkin's radio show on the weekends, will no longer be on the air."

I may not *care*, but it is at least *interesting*.

Darn, I don't care either. I was hoping it was something remotely interesting.

Like NWA Nov. #'s. Anybody got actual #'s, not just who won?

Best of Luck to you Don! You deserve to shine at what you do best!!!
We will miss you.
KNWA was foolish to letyou go.

If you worked anywhere other than KNWA, you would already have the numbers. If you want them, pay for them like the rest of us.

As far as Don goes, I wish him the best.

We don't need your numbers. We know people are watching. If I ask people who they watch or someone that doesn't work here ask they tell us KNWA. That's good enough for me. That's as good as a lousy over-priced polling sample of a few that is suppose to represent thousands. Check any market that goes from diaries to meters and you will always see a huge gain from the #3 and #4 and #1 and #2 go way down.

Hey, love the way everyone's all the time posting anonymous comments around here! Ssooo much easier to make fun of people that way!!!

Don's a great guy. We wish him the best of luck.

I feel bad every book when KNWA whines about how the ratings are wrong. BOO HOO! Accept your product sucks and move on. If these numbers were so skewed as you say, I am sure stations would stop subscribing to Nielson. Get over your 3rd place rating and do something productive to get more people to watch, stop whining!

Who is whinning. I already told you we don't need your numbers. By the way, you need to check yur facts. There are several stations that don't subscribe. We sell ourselves not just what a bad sample says.

I may be in the minority here but I think Nelie Jones, Matt Turner, Dan Skoff, and Bo Mattingly are the best team in NWA. Not sure if the numbers will show that but is true. KNWA didn't miss Don at all.

KNWA has missed Don, but surprisingly Matt Turner has done a good job in his place. But it's still not the same.
Don had control over the entire station and he made decisions on what went on the air and what didn't. I don't think Matt Turner and Neilie Jones are doing that and I don't think they could do that. Don Elkins was strong and KNWA lost a legend. POINT BLANK

I would take Matt Turner over Don Elkins any day of the week. I worked with both of them but Matt is a lot better person and he is adapting to job. Don was burned out and didn't care anymore

Lets stop this Don vs. Matt thing right now.
Both of these guys are friends and it has nothing to do with them.
Don has been in the business for almost 25 years and Matt has only been in broadcasting for like two years. The point of this post is to congratulate Don on getting a new job and getting away from KNWA, a station ruled by dickheads who don't know anything about telelvision. Sorry you're hearing all of this Don=====Matt I don't know you well but I hear you're a nice guy and a hard worker. This has nothing to do with eighter of you.

I just think it is amazing that none of you will fess up and say who you are but you will slam everyone in the business. Both Don and Matt are great people. Don was an excellent anchor and KNWA lost out when he left. But let's stop acting like children and act like adults.

I agree with Daniel. Glad to see someone else actually introduce himself.

Matt is a cool guy. Last year in Little Rock he was doing the Razorback Nation report after the Mississippi State-Hog football game and let me and my friend pull up with our beer coolers and get smashed while him and Keli did their report.

I like both guys. The truth is Don was done. You can't blame KNWA on that as a matter of fact KFSM agreed that KNWA made a good choice for him to depart. As far as Matt goes, he's very young and wants to be good. He has a lot of work to do but has a good future. KNWA finally made a good decision to give him a shot. I don't believe that anyone in the market can make fun of hiring young. Could be the best young talent in the market in a very long time.

Congrats don!

It always amuses me how losing stations like to say the ratings don't count or that they are "bad samples." And yes, of course people tell you they watch. And some do. The majority don't, but some do.

What is wrong with all you people?

At 10:06 PM, January 01, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If you think thse ratings are an accurate forcast of who is watching your stations you need help. Come on, at best it's a bad sample. I don't care of you are KNWA and don't give them money. All stations either complain about the sample size or the placement of the diaries. At the endof the day we should all be greatful that the lowest rated TV station still has more viewers than any radio station has listeners and any newspaper has readers. The newspaper still bills more than all of the TV stations combined. What about cable? They have no ratings and still take our money. One day you will all realize that we are losing to a weaker medium. Get over yourselves!

At 9:23 AM, January 02, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm of a different opinion on the ratings. I think they are actually pretty accurate. Just because a lot of us don't like what they say doesn't mean they don't tell us the truth.

As for newspaper billing more than tv, that's always been true. I think it is insane as well, but on the marketing side we have not yet figured out a way to convince clients of that.

Cable does generate significant ratings in this market.

At 10:10 AM, January 02, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The point is we have no idea how close the numbers are to reality because it's a very small sample. It's not just the lower rated stations that have issues with the style in which they count the ratings. I know that KFSM and KHBS have asked for some samples or more placement in certain counties. The truth is we all have no idea if they are accurate or not. Give me an example of where you see cable with a legit rating.

At 10:38 AM, January 02, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Take a look at morning news times and access. Cable pulls quite a few points in both.

Don, you were the only reason I watched KNWA. You will be missed around here! Good luck!

Now, can someone please ship out the giant-toothed bobbleheaded freakshow, Neile Jones? PLEASE?

Wow, something we can all agree on!

why was the fire houston nutt comment taken out? it makes the last part of the thread seem like we agree on the neile thing, not the houston nutt part that was there yesterday. very odd. i'm sure this will go away too huh? funny how one can be taken out to change the tone of it all

i agree with the neile comment. she is irritating. it is like watching a drag show.

Yes.

And I don't watch KNWA because of her. She's awful in every way. My Great Dane would be a better anchor.

Don was the best journalist in NWA hands down. He knows his stuff and didn't need a prompter to carry the news. Sad to see him leave..

At 7:34 PM, January 04, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Neile is freakin fine! Hell yeah!

Everyone that used to work with Don knows that he is the best anchor to ever sit at the desk in NW Arkansas... Don deserved better than KNWA. Their GM is a freakin prick. Thank goodness I moved on to another station that cared about their reporters/anchors and their employees..

someone needs to give the perky Ms Jones a clue, glam-down the makeup. the lip gloss is waaay too intense for 42 inch HD.

Did Elkins accept the weekend news anchor position? Only job posted on WBOC site

Neile and Matt are doing a great job. You people need to get off her back. She is a fantastic news anchor and a great person to work with. There is nothing wrong with her makeup

Neile, you really shouldn't post on here anonymously. It is getting embarrassing.

Quick question: Can you get some kind of brace device to stop your head from bobbing around?

At 3:43 PM, February 02, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

as a WBOC viewer I just discovered Don-I could tell the first time I saw him that he was a real professional. One of the best talents this market has seen, in my opinion. This past week they have had him co-anchoring weeknights, though BOC has a tendency to juggle the anchors around a lot.
