Eells: ASP Releases Accident Report

Source: KATV Arkansas State Police released their final report on Monday’s fatal car crash that killed Paul Eells and B.J. Burton. The accident happened near Russellville. Paul was returning home from Fayetteville.

State police say there was nothing surprising in the report. Results from toxicology tests could be back in the next few days. The accident happened along Interstate 40 west in the far west bound lanes. The report indicates both vehicles were traveling at or near the speed limit.

A data recorder inside Paul's vehicle has been analyzed and indicates Paul was driving with his cruise control and it was never turned off. It also appears breaks were never applied. His car crossed the center line, through the median and into west bound traffic, hitting Burton's vehicle in the inside lane. State police say neither driver reacted. The question that still remains is what caused Paul to cross the center lane. State Police say it may never be known.

It sounds like he may have fallen asleep. I'm sure he was exhausted. That is the bad thing about cruise control, it is just too easy to set it..I am surprised that the other driver didn't notice or react to Paul's car crossing the median...but it may have happened so fast, she may not have even noticed.

Paul was 70. He might have suffered a heart attack and died before his car ever crossed the median.

I thought that as well... but even when having a heart attack, I would have though that he would put on the brakes..unless it just happening so fast... but, we may never know. All I know is we've lost a great man. I only wish I could have lived my life like he lived his.

It is amazing to me that it always seems to come back to the way Paul lived his life. He must have truly been a man of great character. I would love to be remembered as he is being remembered.

i was just watching video on wsmv-tv's site about the passing of paul. even 28 years later the anchor at that station, dan miller, got choked up and couldn't speak after the story on paul ran on their newscast. what an impact to have on people that this many years later you are still so highly regarded. paul was a man of integrity and conviction who will not soon be forgotten. i know that i will be attempting to live a life of purpose and conviction after realizing the impact that paul had on all of us. you never really realize what you have until it's gone. paul, save me a place next to you at the big table up there. we'll see you on the other side. oh my.

Ray Tucker claims that he's talked to at least 2 different people that played golf with Paul this weekend, and that both of them claim that Paul complained of shortness of breath while playing (the 2 times were on different days as I understand it). He also stated that Paul had talked with his wife on Sunday night about his wishes for whenever his time was up.

It may never be known if his heart quit before the accident, but all of those events lead one to wonder.

I believe he had to have had a massive heart attack or stroke--had he been conscious at all, I believe out of automatic reflex he would have hit the brakes at some point, which would have turned off the cruise control. My uncle died on the highway from a massive heart attack and drifted into the ditch, fortunately not hurting anyone else, but his doctors said he never knew what hit him.

Paul either had a heart attack or a stroke and did not regain consciousness. Had he been merely sleeping then he would surely have roused enough to have applied some pressure to the brakes.

Ys I would think if he had just dozed off, the roughness of the car going across the median would have woke him up....

This has nothing to do with the accisent, but I was listening to the comments of past coaches about Paul, and they all had nothing but goos things to say about working with him.But one was noticeably absent. Yhe first coach,Lou Holtz.Maybe I missed it, but I haven't read or seen any comment from him. Wonder why?

What is heck is wrong with the guy who keeps saying that KATV killed Paul?

I just have one thing to say to you...make a complete coherent sentence! You sound like Kanye West during the Hurricane Katrina telethon. He can't form a complete thought and I don't think you can, either.

At 4:42 PM, August 07, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

gee... bring race into it... that'll make you look so much better...

yeah, it's screwed up that someone would say that about Mr. Eells and KATV... but you're not making it any better, ryan...

just my 2¢...

At 7:00 PM, August 07, 2006, Blogger Ryan said...

All I am saying is that he needs to learn to make a complete sentence without run-ons. Because he can't do that he sounds just as stupid as Kanye West. Where am I wrong in pointing this out?

At 7:03 PM, August 07, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wait, racism? Because Kanye is black? Can somebody honestly watch what Kanye said and think that he was making sense? Geez man, that was a racist comment, it wasn't even a racial comment.

I forgot to say this...if you are going to give your two cents how about you use your name? I'm not afraid to do it. Why are you?

At 8:23 PM, August 07, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

oh yeah.. You can't say anything about a black person because it will automatically be perceived as racist. Give me a break! I wish I was black, then I could blame any criticism of me on racism.

Remember white came out of balck and the problem with Arkansas is they are not hiring minorities with their own equipment!

Enough of this off-topic nonsense.

I agree with the massive heart attack theory. Had he been asleep and awakened, the would have applied the brakes out of reflex. That dip in the median surely would have awakened if merely going left of center didn't by itself. Not only that, I thought I heard some reports from people playing golf with him earlier that day, saying that he was having problems breathing and was complaining about the heat. It was close to 100 that day.

Who knows... but the heart attack theory makes sense, maybe aggravated from being out in the heat all day.

ryan, I would love to use my real name, but I don't have time to set up an account here... or waste time scouring myspace for sex offenders or post Bible verses on my blog or equate stupid stuff people say to the ramblings of Kanye West (and we all know what you were going on about is his "George Bush doesn't care about black people", not his incoherent rapping... in equating the two, you show yourself to be racist, albeit surreptitiously - maybe even to yourself) so forgive me if I don't sign up for the 'look at me' effect...

You know you don't have to create an account to use your name. Just click on other under 'Choose an identity' and type in your name. Now is that so hard? And I am not a racist, either. You don't know me and you don't need to speak as to whether or not I am a racist. Just go back and listen to the audio from the telethon and you will realize that I was not being a racist. I was just pointing out that the guy who was saying KATV killed Paul sounds almost as dumb as Kanye. As the previous poster said, "Stupid is stupid. It doesn't matter what color you are."

My question for you all, What about the victim's family? didn't another person die in this accident? Was that funeral televised? is there a blog discussing that person's life?

Does this blog focus on the media? Yes. Is there a blog that focuses on Dover, Arkansas? Probably...and I am sure that they are talking about the other victim

Her death and funeral got way more coverage than it would have if if it had not involved Paul.
