NWA May Numbers

Arkansas Business.com has the May ratings for the station in NWA. Below are the highlights from the article:

> KHBS+ (which includes KHBS, Channel 40 in Fort Smith, and KHOG, Channel 29 in Fayetteville) had a 9.3 rating at 10 p.m. for Washington, Benton and Madison counties combined. KNWA had a 5.5 rating during the same time slot, down from 7.4 in November, but still beating KFSM, Channel 5, which had a 4.6 rating.

> KFSM was the clear winner in the entire 11-county designated market area. KHBS+ was the winner during all three evening time slots in Northwest Arkansas.

Have you heard KNWA's new news motto?

"If it ain't in the paper, it ain't news!"

What a lazy news staff. Can we get something original for a change?

At 11:28 PM, July 14, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

i quit getting the paper cause KNWA will read it to me every night at 5, 6 and 10.

At 12:25 PM, July 15, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Now, now, just because KNWA isn't paying for the wire I'm sure they don't just read the newspaper on air. I'm sure they also Google up some stories via the Internet.

(Assuming, of course, DeathStar hasn't cut off access to the Internet.)

The new motto at KHBS should be...
"We can win 2 counties in an 11 county market, beat them numbers suckas"

People that work for Nexstar will now have to pay for their own cellphones and use them for work

PER Daune Lammers. He just wants to drive up that 50 cent stock.

When are the viewers in Washington and Benton Counties FINALLY gonna turn to 5 News like everyone else has?? If that happens....everyone else is out of the news biz.:)

It's really hard to explain their 3rd place finish in those two counties and being so dominant everywhere else. I know KHOG was the first station...but I wish everyone up here wasn't so far up their you know what!

I wish KFSM would finally figure out how to get over the top here. Being in the mall just isn't good enough!

I find it funny that the business journal has always been the mouthpiece of KHOG.

Must be because they help host Midnight Madness.

As for Deathstar, if I were an ambitious person working in the AP Little Rock bureau, I might advise them Googling something traditionally yields content I put out - ergo, is not available to them.

Don't Washington and Benton counties have more educated people than any other county?

I believe those two counties carry the largest population in the fort smith/fyv market.......so winning those two are important!

You all are really hung up on this AP thing with Nexstar.....this is something the viewers don't know/could care less about! It's a non-issue. I mean...are you gonna start running promos that you're subscribed to AP and Nexstar isn't??? The viewers are gonna be sooooo impressed!!!! I think they're kinda like me....if you can google and Yahoo the AP stories....why pay the money?? Who's the stupid one??

Since when did all of you become such big AP fans?? My goodness...if a station doesn't subscribe to Neilsen or AP, they're just not a station! I'm sure those two companies love the fact that you believe that!! Have they contacted you to be in their advertising????

You people are poster children for the AP!

At 8:49 AM, July 17, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

What the article doesn't say is that KFSM is gaining ground like crazy in NWA. 40/29 has always won up there, but KFSM has made big moves up in all three evening time periods. Combine big growth in Washington and Benton with dominance in the rest of the market and KFSM wins the DMA by huge numbers.

The point is, even if they Google something, it is probably AP content.

They do not have a license to use AP content in any form, just like I don't have the right to use Reuters content that I Google at my station.

At 9:39 AM, July 17, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

9:22- Maybe you should examine why you are paying for something you can access for free?

Also, have you considered that there are other ways to get the news other than AP?

At 9:44 AM, July 17, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The bottom line is...what do the viewers see and do they like what they see. The viewers do not see what goes on behind the scenes....and could CARE LESS! Whether or not a station subscribes to a particular news service or not has NO BEARING on who they choose to watch!

I am not a Nexstar fan...I am also not a cheap person. However....I am beginning to wonder if Nexstar isn't on to something by refusing to throw money away to services like Neilsen and AP just because everyone else does. I suspect that other stations will follow.

You have to remember Nexstar had an IPO and it was like $14 now the stock is I believe .50 cents.

KNWA doesn't need the wire when they can copy the story out of the morning newspaper. Of course, the morning newspaper got the story from the AP wire the day before.

So two days later KNWA gets the story. That's why they are KNWA: Northwest Arkansas' two day old news operation.

So it's okay then for me to TiVo your newscast and then upload it to my website? How about if I just stick a mic up the TV and start simulcasting your station via the Internet? Is that okay? After all, if you're okay with violating the AP copyright, you can't complain when your copyright is violated.

I don't know about AP and all that stuff, but as an average, working, mom, wife, student in the Wash. Co. area:

*Craig Cannon is funny looking; sorry, all there is to that one, but a 40/29 newscast can stop me from flipping once in a while when he's not there.

*Ch. 5 is pretty secure as my default nightly news source. The same is true for probably 90% of my news watching friends. The secret to their success? Easy to remember. And they don't make many mistakes as far as I can tell. Like the behind the scenes things must be running pretty smoothely. And they just seem nice. I can recognize quite a few members of that crew when I see them in public. Not just anchors either. The reporters, even a couple of the camera guys, so I guess that mall location does help a bit, whoever said that. The Fayetteville reporters might be some of my favorites in any news I've seen; Matt and Dena especially, but I'd look out for the redhead I've seen a few times now. She's got a unique look and a pretty laid back delivery, I'd like to see her time spent on air switched with that other new girl, Ketz I think. Woulnd't mind seeing a lot less of her. She needs to be on kiddy stories or something. Jared shouldn't be on television.

*KNWA is barely fending off UATV for that 3rd spot. Even the CAT's a contender. Too many bells and lights and whistles and things. I can't seem to trust or take Neile Jones or Alexa(?) seriously. Both of them remind me of behind your back sh*t talking women I've met. Not just a couple, all of them I've ever met. Seems like they have a lot of tech. issues too there. I prefer their sports hands down though. Seems like 40/29 and Ch. 5 each have like 3 guys doing it, or is that the norm?

So,(and this is just me talkin here...and everyone I know)
Ch. 5: Keep it up, but lose Jared and Ketz, oh and Garrett(sp?) is amazing. Beef up your sports dept.

40/29: Do something about Cannon's face and we'll talk. Beef up sports

KNWA: Maybe include what channel you're on in your name there? workin wonders for 5. Team up with UATV and own the student population with Ark. Traveler stories and in depth Razorback sports...Or just blow it up and start over?

Just a web browing passerby...

The book lady's right. Jared, gotta go. And Ketz, please. She doesn't even know how to spell her last name. Looks like 5 has picked some bad choices for anchors. The drug addict, Ashley Beck and the definition of Dumb Blonde, Ashley Ketz. Oh and who could forget the anchor that can't pronounce her own name right, Bridget Schultz. Maybe the News Director has a thing for idiots since he/she must be one.

Hopefully this double Ashley thing is just something they're trying out during book. The station must now be as smart as the book lady thinks they are.

Oh and Craig Cannon's tooth thing was about as entertaining as the Ashley duo.

I don't think anyone here is saying that the AP is a "must-have." If a station can do without the AP and save that money, good for them. BUT, if you're obtaining AP content from outside sources (Google, Yahoo!, or another news organization) and then broadcasting that content as though you are an AP subscriber, that is wrong. Not only is it wrong, it is illegal. You're stealing. If you don't want AP, fine. But realize that you CANNOT use AP material in any way. Period.

People... seriously. The only reason Jared, Ashley, and Ashley get picked on is because they work for a station that's winning. It's human nature to pick on things that are a threat to you. I'm sure we could go on about the anchors at KNWA and KHOG... but I'll resist the temptation.

Ashley Beck is NOT a drug addict... that is ridiculous. Ridiculous. She will do a fine job on the weekday mornings. Ashley Ketz may be a bit ditzey, but she will be a good anchor with just a little more experience. Jared... well Jared has his moments, but he is a good news anchor. He pulls good numbers on the weekend... in fact he wins! Jared has a good career in front of him.

Yes, KFSM has trouble in Benton and Washington counties, as it always has, but it is rising up from where it once was. With the strong following it has in the river valley (which may not be growing as fast, but isn't going away) its going to be tough to beat. Its cool and all that KNWA and KHBS can do well in two or three counties, but keep in mind we serve 11.

Yes, KNWA/KARK can get other news services besides AP... and they don't HAVE to get the numbers from Neilsen... but that's missing the point. The point IS that Nexstar doesn't appear to be willing to spend money to provide its employees the tools to do the best job they possibly can.

All of the station groups are trying to save money, sure... but when you take away the tools that can improve the quality of your product and help the sales staff - that's not a good sign. Why ask them to "make do" when you could afford to do better?

Question: Why do people watch local news.

Answer: Weather and Sports.

-------------

Salser, as goofy as he was, was at least a "face" for 40. KNWA is KNWA. Lewis at 5 has steadily been building up an audience outside of the River Valley for 2 years now.

As far as sports, people are turning to Irwin because he is the only sports guy in the market that doesn't get on all fours & bend over backwards to take one for the U of A athletic department. Fans are frustrated with Razorback sports right now. REALLY frustrated. It's no wonder Mike Irwin's popularity is growing. He is the only sports anchor in the market that has shown any balls in covering the Razorbacks. (and if you haven't noticed by now, a lot of people in NWA tend to be Razorback fans).

But KNWA has Derek Ruscin now. Beware, 40 and FSM!!!!!!

Derek Ruscin.... oh no!!!!!!!!!!!

Duane Lammers and Nexstar gets the numbers but well let's just say he gets the numbers.

Don't tell he doesn't steal them because he has handed them to me in a folder before!

And yes it was after they stop paying. Several people at other Nexstar stations have suited them for this issue.

The people that run Nexstar have no ethics.

"As far as sports, people are turning to Irwin because he is the only sports guy in the market that doesn't get on all fours & bend over backwards to take one for the U of A athletic department."

Get it straight...

KNWA does the above. Obviously.

Irwin is a homer, and sportscasters should not have a bias in covering their teams. It shows through.

40/29 is the only staff without a bias. None of them have a vested interest in rooting for or against the Hogs. That has credibility. People notice and people get it.

At 8:51 PM, July 20, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I like Derek and the 40/29 boys, but they aren't objective. They know to get along, you go along in Fayetteville. I'm not saying Irwin is better. I'd put the Big Nickel and 40/29 even in the sports department.

Bo at KNWA is Houston Nutt's lapdog. If you want the party line, you tune to that station.

"40/29 is the only staff without a bias. None of them have a vested interest in rooting for or against the Hogs. That has credibility. People notice and people get it."

Of course people DO notice.

We're talking about sports here, not global politics or foreign policy.

Opinions DO matter. Fans want A) someone is going to give it to them straight to them about their team and B) someone who still has a vested interest in the team's success.

Why would I, as a fan, give two craps about what some dopey short-time anchor thinks about the Razorbacks?

I want someone that is connected. I want someone that will ask the questions that I, as a fan, want answered.

People don't want a sports anchor/reporter that has an vested interest in the Hogs?

The very notion of that is laughable. Shoot, it's beyond laughable.

BS -- it's journalism, and any sports anchor or reporter who's worth his or her salt wants a reputation as a journalist, and therefore shouldn't be on the f'n payroll of Houston Nutt. He goes down, they go down too -- time for a change of anchors, right? The person who said the fans want it straight, and don't want regurgitated puke from the sports information department are correct. Hate him or not, people like Wally Hall are very popular because of that. Why would I watch if everytime I see a sportscast I know I'm getting spin from the Razorbacks? Why is Chuck Barrett so popular? He's not on the payroll...
