Sinclair Starts the Bloodbath

FTV Live reports the first casualty of the Sinclair purchase of the Allbritton broadcast stations.  WJLA/Channel 7/Washington DC General Manager is getting the axe.  Bill Lord sent the email to his staff stating September 30th will be  his last day at the station as Sinclair is terminating him from that position.

How long til the axe starts falling at all the other new Sinclair stations...

I'm going to guess it'll be this Friday for KATV people. It's always best to lay off people on Friday.

That's not how Nexstar did it.

Why fire a gm...to hire another.

It's a matter of putting you own management in place.

An insider at Sinclair said 4 managers from the 3rd floor and the one in the basement will be cut.

Not all of the managers will be cut. You can't get rid of all managers at one time. The GM is usually the first to go. Once a new GM is in place they will start looking for their own people at the department head level.

Some Department head positions, like accounting, will probably be centralized so they will get get cut soon.

I have seen the list of jobs open at Sinclair stations. Numerous jobs around the country are posted in periodicals and websites. With recent acquisitions of at least 3 different companies, I wonder how many of "their people" are available to take over these positions. Majority of the Sinclair stations have been former indies, Fox , My TV stations that did have News departments.

His ties to Allbritton are too close.

Why can't this happen to a station and news anchor I dislike?

At 3:49 PM, July 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@3:42, because similar tragedies already happened to those stations, which could be a contributing factor as to why you dislike them.

honesty its time for change over there if i ran 7 Todd Y would be the chief met the other 3 would be gone Inman would be on Sports as the num 2 to Sully
Basically the only person that would be Safe is A Dover
yes I Would Want Beth but its hard to work 60 hours a week with 2 kids i would try and see if she would take the weekend job I Would try and hire hard workers that are maybe underused elsewhere
yes i would fire Erin and Lilly

Fire Erin Hawley and Janelle Lilley? Their salaries are not a big deal. They are reporters. Reporters are the last to get cut. This isn't a merge like Fox 16 and KARK were they have, by their standards, too many reporters. Editors and photographers will be cut before reporters. However, they could cut Erin and Janelles anchoring time.

Ned will bee forced to retire. Hck maybe 11 can pick him up.

At 7:27 PM, July 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Is it true that Ned would have retired years ago, if it wasn't for spending tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands on his incarcerated son?

If they fire Church they better put Geis on a very short leash. Not sure which one of the two is worse.

Get out while you can folks. Automation is coming and, in most cases, will replace you before your retirement age arrives. It's management's dream.

@7:28 they are both too smart for their own good. They both probably thought that dream of nerds ruling the world was more than just a quip.

They will both survive this. They have skills Sinclair has trouble finding, while yours come every time a wide-eyed coed gets her piece of paper that says she's a journalist.

@10:22 PM: Both too smart for their own good? You used 'smart' here as fill word for what? Geis is a "handy man" and has some skills in that regards but Church is mostly smoke and mirrors. If he wouldn't have other stations to call and ask how they have already done it, he'd be lost!

Where have you been....automation has been in place at alot of places (here in Arkansas) for a long time.

The secret about automation is, that it will only replace the unskilled workers. If you have no real world skills, McDonalds finds you unable to flip burgers, you then cross-trained to be a camera operator at a local TV station, then yes, be afraid of automation!

To get an idea of automation, go to YouTube and view the KAKE
(ABC-Wichita) Weather Department's equipment. Jay Prater, chief meteorologist, said in the comments that the automation saves overtime costs paid to employees during severe weather coverage.

Of course it does. It also saves money on hotel rooms during severe winter weather.
