Clean Sweep for KATV

KATV/Channel 7/Little Rock swept the February Nielsen's book.  Arkansas Business.com reports KATV was the clear leader in each newscast hour.  KATV General Manager Mark Rose told AB.com "That it was “remarkable” that KATV continued to pull ahead in that time slot with a 9.9 rating, despite competing with the Olympics. Since the February ratings period, however, KATV has lost one of its 6 and 10 p.m. anchors, Christina Munoz, to a public relations job at the University of Central Arkansas."

You will find all the numbers HERE.

Sounds like a good idea if your management at 11. The conclusion is KATV is still King and 4 is coming on strong against 11.

4 hasn't been coming on at all. The only thing that helped 4 was the olympics.

Even back in the day I'm not sure KATV has ever seen a run like this. Congratulations on the continued ass kicking. It'll be interesting to see what happens with all the changes though.

Amazing what happened once the Big Pard and his "research" moved out of the picture and the station sopped being so knee jerk about everything.

I give 7 credit for improving. However, I believe that 4, 11 and 16 are making it much easier for the KATV bunch.

If they are doing so well why would Yancey decide to leave at this time for an independent start up station? If the tide is rising, her boat should rise with it as well.

Just because a "tide is rising" doesn't mean kudos, raises and opportunities are being handed out. I'm not talking about Yancey, I'm talking facts at any station.

Notice to THV, you should quit trying to make excuses why you can't compare to market leader and realize that you should be focused on KARK. The Olympics only help when it's the lead in to news. The mornings and 5 don't apply.

I agree

I t doesn't help ratings when an anchor is given a task for which she clearly does not have the skills to perform. I felt embarrassed and saddened for Alyse Eady when she interviewed Sylvia Perkins, Bobby Moore's mother. Interviewing the mother of a dead child about that child's crime and death is a tricky job, and she was clearly not prepared or she lacked the skill set to perform the task. Her long silences, between questions and answers, unsupported breathy voice, and the almost too sympathetic tone of the interview made her appear novice. Doing an interview like this is a tough assignment, and it should have been given to a more experienced interviewer, or someone should have coached Alyse more fully. It was hard and uncomfortable to watch.

At 6:56 AM, April 10, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

She is a novice. Put in an anchor spot with no experience because she was a beauty queen. A title she would have a very hard time wining now by the way.

At 7:20 AM, April 10, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You watch. KARK's morning and 5 and 6 will be down the next ratings book.

At 8:18 AM, April 10, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I didn't say they beat you but that you should be watching over your shoulder. They probably will go back down in am but they have beat you at 5 pretty consistently. If you are going to give Okympics all the credit then you should give CBS prime all the credit as well.

Is Beth returning and doing the 10pm after she has the baby? Isn't that why Christina left, because she has two young kids? Or will they give the 10 to Erin?

KATV posted an anchor position. What show is it for?

At 9:52 AM, April 10, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Tell me again what KATV "wins" by sweeping these diary polls? Some kind of premium on ad rates? Anchors get more money? A pat on the back from Sinclair at corporate meetings?

At 10:00 AM, April 10, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@4:01 it's interesting how opinions can vary. I saw the interview too and was moved by her sincerity and knowledge of the case. Rarely do news people seem to give two shits about the person they are talking to.

At 10:56 AM, April 10, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

it means they get to set the rate for ads in the market and take more market share.

In a comment on a previous post, someone mentioned that KATV lost all their talent of Latin ethnicity this year. Is the new reporter, Jordan, Hispanic?

If Alyse can't do the interview, then who do you recommend?
Meredith?
Craig?
Sarah?
The Garden Cat?

First, IF you believe NSI ratings, the Olympics should impact all the newscasts. The fact that KARK did not show growth in the early evening newscasts during this Feb sweep is a real problem for them; in fact, KARK was down year to year in the 5pm and 6pm.

However, that really isn't even the point. In-fighting, name calling, gossip and disgruntled malcontents aside, there are two significant issues. The NSI diary method of audience measurement does not work. Period. Between antiquated data gathering techniques, and the ability of stations to manipulate diary placement, no one should be buying media using NSI ratings, much less talking about ratings dominance.
Providers like Rentrak provide more accurate data on overall viewing, and can be utilized as a tool to evaluate and purchase media (I do not work for Rentrak) but their demographic information still leaves a lot to be desired.

Second, and this is the most significant issue for traditional local television media, is the continual erosion of live viewing. That doesn't mean that really talented people working at local television stations will all lose their jobs. It does mean that to survive in the future, the talented people working in local television need to reinvent their television stations.

I know. Easier said than done.

I've always been a supporter of Alyse's...until today, when she posted a video of herself cracking up during a news segment because Tom Brannon tripped off camera. And to make matters worse, the graphic that appeared while she was laughing was "Murder/Suicide," the story of the son who killed his parents and then himself in Garland County. Most unprofessional thing I've ever seen on the air. And then she goes and posts it on her Facebook page, talking about how funny it was and how sometimes you just have to laugh. She does not belong anchoring or reporting hard news.

At 9:41 PM, April 10, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Set the rate for ads? Are you that stupid? The rate is set by the lowest bidder. KATV's rates are higher, because you think anyone cares about your ratings. Most advertisers just want to hear who is cheaper.

End of lesson.

My initial post, though it did criticize Alyse, was not to go after her personally, as much as it was to say she was not experienced enough as an interviewer to interview Sylvia Perkins. An interviewer must be compassionate but also must be willing to gently ask the hard questions. I don't necessarily think she personally had an agenda and was attempting to present a bias. Instead , I don't think she knew how to do the interview and how to ask the hard questions with compassion. I'm was embarrassed for her as she conducted it . Honestly, I know this sounds blunt, it was like watching a kid fumble through a poorly played piano piece at the class recital. Someone else should have done the interview, or she should have had coaching and better preparation. Providing her with the tools or giving the interview to someone else would have been the professional thing to do, and it would have spared her the embarrassment .

At 7:33 AM, April 11, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I watch THV's morning show and saw the interview. I disagree with your analysis. While I partially blame Bobby's mother for what happened to her son, I glad she talked bout what happened. Alyse did a good job of allowing her to finish talking and not cutting her off. She came across as professional, unbiased, and a good interviewer. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

At 8:05 AM, April 11, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

3:53 is the producer of another morning show. Why else would they be posting so early on two consecutive days? Enough said. Perhaps if you had secured the interview, which you weren't able to do, you could have done with it what you wanted. Next time, post at a less obvious time. RAWWWR!

At 8:46 AM, April 11, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Or it's your producer who doesn't like or think alyse is good enough.

At 8:49 AM, April 11, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Not so fast. Replying to the person above, nightsiders who wake up right before work, go to sleep in the early hours as the morning crew is waking up.

I think it is THV's own morning producers too.

At 12:04 PM, April 11, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why would Alyse post that video on FB? Very tacky. She is pretty and does a fine job READING the news but doesn't show a personality. The new anchor, Denise Middleton does. I'd say, switch them. Personality is needed in the morning, not necessarily for evening news.

Yea probably Jessica. I worked with her before coming to my senses and quitting for PR. She's the big black girl on the fat kid weight loss challenge if you watch the morning show on Saturday mornings. Jessica has some serious issues and is obsessed with this blog. She's the type that gives newsers a bad rep.

I know Matthew Carroll has worked at 3 local stations on morning shows. He is h*ll to work with. Not only does he not work, he bosses people around and curses like a sailor. Is he still at katv? If so and someone says this Jessica girl moved to 5pm, did she request a transfer because of him?

Lol n of course u just assume that i am black. I am not, here is a hint for u guys, i am named geronimo for a reason. I am not racist though like the other poster who responded to me. If u come on an anonymous board spewing hateful rhetoric towards people trying to make an honest living then u r a coward plain and simple. I would say that ill pray for u, but i am also getting a strong godless atheist vibe from this board.

Actually Geronimo, you called out white people. And they reacted appropriately.

At 11:58 PM, April 11, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No i did not call them out, i merely pointed out the FACT that the majority of faceless cowards online r in fact the white man. This is no different than saying most drug arrests r for blacks. It merely is. Of course, the blacks live in impoverished neighborhoods n many times r forced to resort to selling weed merely to live. But the sort of cowardice i see on here is akin to the actions of the serpent of genesis himself. I rebuke u but even more importantly history will rebuke u because your words ARE being recorded for posterity.

KATV is doing nothing new. its just the other two are sucking badly. 11 needs to step up to the plate and give 7 a run for the money/viewers. all the old timers at 7 are complacent with what they are doing. Ned is getting worse..the reporters are college tv material. folks tune to 7 out of habit and habit only. can't be for content.

Second, I want to thank my mom and dad for raising such a son of a bitch. You guys are the best! Big ups, mom!
Third, hey genius who tagged me. I'm an EP. Yes I boss people around (I'm a manager. Duh). Yes, I may use grown up words occasionally, I'm a grown up. I would assume you are too. Oh wait, are you a 10 year old on this blog? Oh dear! Get hence lest I tell your mother you're seeing swear words on the internet! Heavens!
Fourth, I DO work! Really! I get paid and everything! I even get a cool paycheck every two weeks. It's neat.

Soooo with my inaugural slagging by a faceless, anonymous (anonymous...HA) coward out of the way, I shall carry on with my day. Hope you all enjoy yours. See you on another 6 months!

Matthew, a real manager would not have replied to that.

At 10:46 PM, April 13, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

(My opinion) A manager also would not use the words "boss people around"

At 11:02 PM, April 13, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Or actually boss people around. You're a manager, your job is to manage your people. Good managers know know the difference. Good lord man, have some class as well.

At 8:37 AM, April 14, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I wish more people would get "bossed around" at KATV. Maybe there would be some leadership, but no one would take it seriously from any of the so-called managers we have.

At 1:39 PM, April 14, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well that settles it. At first I wanted to applaud him for commenting as himself, but after reading that response the original accuser's point looks stronger.

Matthew may have a manager's title, but after that comment I will think of him as a poorly skilled producer with not much real power.

At 10:34 PM, April 14, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Agreed with above posters. Why on earth would an EP lower himself to responding to criticism from anonymous people on this blog? It wasn't even cleverly done! I hope you're better at writing news stories than than you are at sarcasm. There have been terrible things said on this blog about people who are very well-known, and none of those people have chosen to dignify these anonymous attacks with a reply. You'd have been better off ignoring it.

Jessica Childs has been the rock of the show for yesrs but she requested to move to the 5pm opening. Now they have two guys who recently graduated college. Producers started leaving when management told them they'd have to sign contracts. It has taken about a year to fill the 10pm producer position.

An average college kid is too scared to tell a Craig Oneil or Scott Inman what to do. Most are star struck and nervous.
You need people who are good under pressure. The live shot top story fails more than viewers know. a producer needs to guide anchors, reporters and master control when things change while on the air.
I don't think many anchors around here give much input or help write shows.

At 3:38 PM, April 16, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Then perhaps they should pay producers for services like that, instead of like the fry guy at Burger King.

That is the problem. KATV management is like a 16 year-old kid trying to by a sports car with only enough money to buy a compact. You might end up with a shiny exterior, but chances are it will be a lemon.
