Channel 11 Brings New Sports Anchor on Board

Well this answers a few questions.....TV Spy reports KTHV/Channel 11/Little Rock has hired Mary Dunleavy as sports anchor.  Dunleavy comes to Little Rock from NBC29 WVIR Charlottesville, VA.  Channel 11 news director Dave Parker tells TV Spy one of her first assignments will be covering Razorback's spring practice this week.

I imagine she can thank the Mark Edwards legal action for this job. No way the "best qualified" was going to get hired.

She's been reporting sports for 18 months. A great jump for her from a tiny market. That also means THV probably got her for 40k a year.

She wears that dress and Bielema will probably talk to her a little more than everyone else.

Probably be a step up from Edwards on air though.

She looks like someone straight out college . I am guessing she has no clue who plays at Arkansas or what has happened to us the last two years in football. Just a wild bet that hog zone will not be returning to after razorback football games since all of those guys like Mike Smith and Jim Harris were good friends with Mark Edwards.

She's a lot better looking than the loser, deadbeat dad, Mark Edwards.

Poor girl is walking into an empty sports office. Where is nosy Jessica Duff when you need her.

I guarantee you she was not the most qualified person. The bad thing about this whole Mark Edwards situation is that THV has a perfectly good sports guy that has been walking the halls now for a while that they can't utilize because they are afraid Mark will take them to the cleaners. Its a shame that talent is sitting there right in front of you and you can't use it.

I'm surprised the DemGaz hasn't ever done an article on Mark's deadbeat dad problems. That's a lot of paternity suits for one boy (yes BOY, he's not a man if can't take care of his kids).

She has to be a great improvement over Mock Edwuds, almost anyone would be. Of course the haters that post here will hate as usual. That's what they live for.

One thing about Mark being a hometown boy who has a following in some circles is that he got good scopes, knows all the high school coaches, could call anyone with a minutes notice for an interview.

I agree, I feel bad for the new girl coming in. It seems like a big task for such a young person who wants to smile and come up with 'cute' stand - ups for TV.

Mark has no following in any circles but in his own mind.

So is this new hire going to be the main sports anchor? It's one thing if she is a #3, filling in on Christmas or during the summer.

Yet, if she is the five-day-a-week sports anchor... hooo boy.

That's a big job. Especially if you don't have much knowledge of the local HS scene or the Razorbacks. If you don't know a little bit about running the flexbone in 1988, or King Cotton or Derek Fisher, it becomes apparent within the first week.

I would expect a lot of hand-holding. Perhaps Craig will quietly look at her scripts and make sure she isn't calling teams by the wrong name.

another dumb girl gets a job because some stupid useless news director had a hard on. must have marriage issues or something

They must of found the cheapest cute face girl to hire . This is an insult to Arkansas sports news when we have the likes of Steve Sullivan and before that all time great Paul Ellis
On Katv , Mike Irwin and Aaron Peters on Razorback nation and also you got the former THV sports guy Wess Moore with fox 13 who is very good at covering central Arkansas Sports as well as Razorback sports.
They should of hired somebody local who is familiar with Arkansas sports or at least somebody from the south inthe SEC region instead THV insulting us by hiring someone from Virginia .

This also tells me KTHV doesn't think much of Arkansas football over the next two years.

Do you think the CBS stations in Birmingham, Baton Rouge or Knoxville would hire someone with little experience or familiarity if they anticipated seeing the "home team" 3 or 4 times during the Saturday games on their CBS station?

As with most young female sports anchors, she won't be in Little Rock past two years.

It always goes one of two ways - if she's terrible, she gets fired.

If she knows how to pronounce "Krzyzewski", she'll be at a regional cable sports network within 18 months.

Female sports anchors are the left-handed pitchers of TV sports.

Do a little digging and you'll notice she's been in the business since 2011 and she's been a sports anchor/reporter since 2012. I'm sure she's qualified. Cut the girl a break, it's hard enough being a woman working in broadcast journalism as it is.

Who cares? It's a local sports job! No one watches local news for sports coverage... especially if the team you are interested in is already covered nationally, and there are countless blogs and talk radio programs dedicated to it all day long. She's just eye candy for a job that is not important at all.

At 10:21 PM, April 22, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm all for cutting her a break, but what was your comment about women working in broadcast journalism about? Have you looked around? Are you not surrounded by women? That's the dumbest thing I've read in a while. GMA replaced a male anchor with a woman, making it almost all women with only one male presence. It's basically a sorority now.

News directors absolutely love female sports anchors.

Fills out EEO, are usually single so you can work them crazy hours and they also almost always take the first offer.

As for working in the business since 2012, that's fine. Gotta learn somewhere.

I actually think her market in Virginia (market 190) is a better sports market than LR because Charlottesville has UVA.

There is a big difference in covering Virginia football in the ACC where nobody cares if you win or lose to covering Razorback football where winning and losing is everything in SEC country .

9:45 Who's the "sports guy" walking the halls at THV?

At 6:35 AM, April 23, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That person must not work at thv, we pretty much just have the one hall.

At 7:13 AM, April 23, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Get over yourself razorback fans. You think that just because someone is not from here they can't do a good job of covering the worst football team in the SEC? That's one of the most backwoods, redneck dumbass beliefs around. Of course from a state with the education level as low as this one I wouldn't expect much more.

At 8:14 AM, April 23, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I know two people who aren't from Arkansas who cover/covered the Razorbacks for local TV. Steve Sullivan and Paul Eells.

She will be going up against Wes and Sully. Enough Said.
It's fine if someone like them tosses to a young person for a quick story or live shot but for her to anchor, turn off.

Did Mark Edwards have the sports director title? Are they hiring someone to fill his position?

At 8:51 AM, April 23, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

She'll be fine against Wes and Sully. What do you think they have on her? They were both once new in town too.

At 9:37 AM, April 23, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I believe if you look at Gannett stations in other markets, you'll find several who don't have a "sports director". Anchors read spots stories, unless a Dunleavy is around to sit on set.

You'll be able to tell immediately if she's able to cut it doing sports. Awkward wording and phrasing always exposes females that have no real knowledge of the topic. Her age will also definitely work against her, since she's simply not had much time to perfect her on-air delivery, not to mention tackling a new subject area. As a male viewer and true sports fan, it only takes a single "Hogs lose zero to 6" to tune me out.

So they really did make her the main sports anchor.

Four shows a day. Big ass job.

This... will be interesting.

Well I thought she would have to be better then Edwards but after watching her I'm not sure.

Content has been pitiful, thus far, but if she can read scores without calling the hogs, I'll watch her.

So THV basically paid her to hang out on Dickson Street and go inside grubs on a Thursday night . I wish I had that job!

If she was not drinking before the 10pm newscast on Thursday night then I must deaf and blind because she was sluring every word and had a hard reading the posts on her tablet.

She is horrible, silly, obnoxious. I can't watch 11 sports anymore, I change channels to watch night sports news. Just give it to Clint Sterner, at least he can report the news without being completely obnoxious.
