KTHV Reporter Making the Jump to Hotlanta

KTHV/Channel 11/Little Rock reporter Daniel Wilkerson is leaving Little Rock for Georgia.  Last month he announced on his facebook page he will be joining WGCL the CBS affiliate in Atlanta. Wilkerson has worked as a MMJ and a weekend news producer for KTHV.

Great job Daniel, you will be missed. Good luck with your new job.

Really? Atlanta? There must be a severe lack of talent around the country if this guy is going to Atlanta. Indicative, I suppose, of the decline of local news as a whole.

We already had this discussion a few days ago. There is a lack of qualified minority candidates. If you happen to be dark, you will get the job.

I don't know Daniel. I know that WGCL has abysmal ratings. They are in fourth place and have trouble attracting viewers. WSB is very strong in that market and WAGA is a strong second station. Arkansans may remember that Laura Huckabee was the morning meteorologist there.

@ 8:57, Yada, yada, yada! I don't know Daniel but I do know that not every advancement that a person of color gets is because they're "dark." I heard the same comments 10+ years ago when TJ Holmes left THV as a weekend anchor to become a weekday evening anchor in San Francisco. TJ Holmes advanced in his career because he was ambitious, worked hard, and had that extra zest that's needed for top markets and the national scene. If it was as easy as just having larger amounts of melanin, every person of color would be doing it, but it's not as simple as that. No matter your race or ethnic background, you have to have the skills needed to get the job done. Point, Blank, and Period!

Spin it any way you want, 10:00 AM. No, you don't have to be dark – but it helps. Period.

I think many people who have enjoyed playing or supporting classic victim cards are a little ashamed to find themselves on the other end of the hypocrisy. It is an advantage to be a minority in this business at this point in time. That is an unfair but undeniable fact.

TJ Holmes was a great guy to work with and was a good anchor in AR, but wasn't appreciated here.

Good luck Daniel. You do a good job and have grown as a reporter in Arkansas. You will do well.

Daniel, you are one of the best at THV, hate to see you leave this market.

How the hell does 11 keep sending their awful talent to these big markets?? First what's-her-name goes to MIAMI as a sports girl (if you wanted to call her that), now a guy who's barely been here a year?? Either that place sucks or it's getting cheap in the big time now

Maybe if KATV people didn't spend so much time congrulating themselves on being so great, they'd be able to get a good enough reel to move on in the world too.

@11:21-Her name is Aiyana Cristal and she is a very good sports anchor/reporter. She left LR for the no. 16 market Miami, and after a year left Miami for the no. 3 market Chicago. She's doing awesome in Chicago and the city loves her! Next stop ESPN or Fox Sport! Love ya, Aiyana!

What's going on at THV? I never really knew why long time anchors Liz Massey and Stefanie Bryant left. They never replaced Matt Turner and haven't replaced Liz either. Dawn Scott is awesome, but she only does the 5 and 6 broadcast, leaving Craig O'neill to do the 10 all by himself. I like Craig, but he's just awkward as a evening anchor; he seems better suited for sports in my humble opinion.

WGCL has been in the ratings basement since launching a news department in the late 80s. When your competitors have a 40 year head start, it's somewhat expected that it's gonna take time to gain footing in the market. But CBS 46 has had a quarter of a century to do that, yet they simply cannot find an audience. They cannot keep a consistent anchor team, the turnover is quite high and they have an identity crisis. It seems as if they're changing something every year: their name, branding, set, anchor teams, etc.

I saw the ad Meredith placed for their multimedia journalist position (I'm quite sure that's what Wilkerson will be doing). For one of the largest markets in the country, their requirements were pretty slim. Basically, all they require is a HS diploma and a year of TV experience Read the job listing here.

I have seen ads placed by stations in much, much smaller markets that require more experience, ever for MMJs (which is just a glorified term for a one man band). He's probably be shooting all his own footage just like in Little Rock. Then have to rush back to the station, edit it, write the package and front it on-air. Essentially, he'll be doing 3 or 4 jobs for the price of one.

Bottom line: local TV news is on life support. No one sits down to watch the evening news like they used to. If it weren't for the contracts local affiliates sign with the networks, I imaging many news departments would shut down, because in order to be a network affiliate, you must operate a news department in most cases.

You've got kids right out of school going to markets like New York and Philly, making next to nothing. TV agents have become so desperate, they're signing small market reporters, people they would have never considered when the TV industry was making more money a few years back.

I wish Wilkerson good luck; I think the only reason he's going there is to have "Reporter in Atlanta" on his resume in order to move to a mid sized market and be a real reporter, with a photographer. The station's news product stinks.

The business of operating one's own camera does not make someone less of a reporter.

Give me a break. KATV has sent a lot more people to top 30 markets than KTHV. The reason Channel 7 has so many new reporters is that just about all of their old ones left for bigger markets. Most of the KTHV folks who leave just get out of the business.

Well let's see Daniel... Atlanta... Lisa Cincinnati... Max Milwaukee... Christine Tampa... John Denver... Bobby Charlotte... Dawn Seattle... Chris Atlanta... Aiyana Miami... Tammy Nashville... Now you 10:32!!!

I'm not 10:32, but I'll try... Matt Decample - out of business... Kerrie Jackson - out of business... Melissa Parks - out of business... Justin Acri - out of business... Joan Early - semi-out of business... Pam Smith - out of business... Christina Munoz - out of business.... Wait, sorry 10:32, I'm not helping much.

Both 10:02 and 10:32 miss the point. KATV AND KTHV have had plenty of people move on to bigger markets. I do think it's funny that most of the list of Channel 7 people who got out of the business have been out of TV for more than 10 years. Can't you find more recent examples? I promise they are out there!

Sure, how about Dale 3?

or... Steve Powell

What's the shame in leaving the business anyway? That just means they are the smart ones.

Ayana Crystal was horrible doing sports for thv . I heard she got let go by Miami and does a part time weekend gig up in Chicago not doing sports but any random story.

Aiyana Cristal was a joke. She was the one that couldn't say basketball. She'd say "bassball." ROFLMAO

So who has 4/16 sent on to greener pastures in TV aside from Jessica Dean??

At 12:21 PM, March 14, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Lot's of people. The idea that 4, 7 or 11 sends anyone anywhere is incorrect logic. It doesn't help or hurt you one way or another to be from a certain station. It's just you.

At 12:47, Well you heard wrong regarding Aiyana. She left Miami after one year because she had the opportunity to go to a larger Chicago market. In Chicago she is a full time weekday Sports Anchor/Correspondent covering the Chicago Bears, Cubs, White Sox, Bulls, and Blackhawks.
