Top LR Anchor Getting Out of the Biz

KATV/Channel 7/Little Rock anchor Christina Munoz is leaving the station.  Arkansas Times reports Munoz will become the associate vice president for communications, public relations and marketing at UCA.  Munoz joined KATV in 2003.

So does Beth or Erin take her chair??

More Beth time please

There isn't anyone at the station who is good enough. We need to bring in a profession with journalism and leadership skills. We are a ship without a captain. Everyone wants to leave.

Beth would be better. She is from Carlisle and seems more real on television.

Very obviously, Beth is the right person for the job. Erin is not at home here.

At 8:06 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Beth has the same type of attitude as Scott about their roles though. Both are very inactive as far as their contributions to the newscast. Christina at least attempts to be involved.

The buzz is that Erin Hawley is the top runner and being tapped for this position. I like Beth, but Erin just seems to have that "it" factor that will catapult her into it. Best wishes to all!

The bigwigs love Erin...she'll get it.

At 8:22 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That would really be horrible. I am leaving too if that happens. Talk about rewarding the worst attitude in the newsroom.

At 8:29 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Exactly, if Erin gets it, she'll get it all. No way that conniving woman gets any help putting a newscast together from me.

At 8:35 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Erin reminds me of Kate Sullivan. Kate joined as a reporter and within a little over a year was the evening anchor, and then went on to the no. 1 market NYC as an anchor. It's not always about who's the nicest; the media business can be cut-throat. You have to set a goal of where you want to go and take actions to get there, and trust me, Erin is a go-getter.

At 8:37 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Kate was a doll to work with. Please don't compare them.

At 8:44 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'd be surprised if Erin didn't get it. Management loves her and favortism will definitely come into play.

At 8:47 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why all the hate for Erin? I think she's a sweetheart and I love working with her.

At 8:56 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why all the hate? She is a know-it-all smart-ass without any respect for others around her. This will only get worse if she gets the main desk.

At 8:59 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Erin was hired to not only anchor the news but to bring a little professionalism and order to the weekends. She has ruffled a few feathers doing so and management loves her for it. The crew she's trying to overhaul.....not so much. She is an ambitious person who is not afraid to work and that just doesn't sit well with many of her coworkers who see her as a threat to their cushy little gig they've got going. That's why the hate for Erin. I'm still not sure if I'd like to see her main anchor though. She seems a little robotic and unemotional on air. I'm not sure Beth would take the main anchor spot though so we might be stuck with Erin for a while.

At 9:01 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The big wigs are not here yet.

At 9:01 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KATV has a long history of really good evening news anchors....Karen Fuller, Kate Sullivan, and Christina Munoz...all great! Who shall be next? Best wishes, Christina...you'll be missed!

At 9:12 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So that's why Erin has had a little extra pep in her step this week.

At 9:17 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well I don't work on weekends and I hate her too. No respect. None at all. Conniving is the right word for her.

At 9:18 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Erin is very professional, ambitious, aesthetically pleasing to the eyes, and has a great relationship with management and that's what it takes to be main anchor.

At 9:19 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Interesting how THV problems have wormed their way over to KATV after all, this sounds exactly like what happened with Liz. Good luck over there, you'll need it!!

At 9:26 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Management has known for a while that Christina wanted to be able to spend more time with her kids and working evenings made it impossible. Erin was hired for the weekends, but in hiring her they were also looking for someone who would also be able to become evening anchor once Christina left.

At 9:28 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's a good thing she is "not afraid to work" she's going to have to once the remaining few people around here leave too.

At 9:36 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think Erin's problem is tact. She usually has valid points, but hasn't figured out how to speak to people without coming off as a callous ice-queen. She is still young and may get better at this over time.

At 9:47 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I can't see Beth taking the main gig either. Nightside is no place for a new mom, hence why Christina is leaving in the first place.

At 10:00 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Obviously, the job is Beth's if she wants it. She's the best for the job... great on air, from Arkansas and she and Scott have great chemistry. Question is, will she want to work those hours.

At 10:23 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I disagree with "the job is Beth's if she wants it." It's more like "the job is Erin's if she wants it˝ and yes she does. Management hired Erin so she could transition into the evening spot once Christina left.

At 10:27 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Management moved Beth to the 5 so she could transition into the evening spot. It's been in the works for a while. Everyone here knows they've already talked to her about it. But, I agree with the others... she might not want it.

At 10:33 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

All one has to do is look back at the first great book KATV had in this nice string and see who was anchoring. It was Beth in for Christina while she was on maternity leave. The job is Beth's - if she wants it. And I agree that is a big "if".

At 10:37 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

To the person who says Erin reminded her of Kate Sullivan. I would not take that as a compliment. Kate Sullivan was a big phony. Kate is now primetime anchor with Rob Johnson at WBBM in Chicago. The February ratings show that not only is WBBM in third place at 10:00 by a huge margin, but WGN's 9:00 p.m. newscast scored better ratings than WBBM. I once worked out at the same gym she did (Powerhouse Gym). One day, as I was entering the gym, she was behind me, I was being polite and held the door open. She got mad at me for doing that. She and Mary Nyugen were both narcissistic divas there.

At 10:37 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It doesn't matter if Beth is from Arkansas or not. The majority of news anchors in larger markets' aren't from the market region they work. As someone who has worked in talent management for many years, Erin would be a better choice vs Beth for many reasons. Erin has all the qualities that markets look for and she's very metropolitan which is essential; and by metropolitan I mean she could easily fit into a top market like NYC, LA, or Chicago without looking or sounding out of place.

At 10:45 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Erin looks the part for sure, but anchoring skills are severely lacking. She has a very rigid on-air demeanor.

At 10:45 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I disagree with your negative comment regarding Kate Sullivan. Kate is a class act, great at her job, and a good friend. You don't become an anchor in NYC and Chicago by being just average. She got to where she is through good work ethic.

At 10:46 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It definitely matters that Beth is from Arkansas. You clearly don't know the Little Rock market if you think that. Arkansans don't want "metropolitan". They want real.

At 10:54 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No, it really doesn't matter that Beth is from AR. What matters is the best person for the spot. Neither Kate Sullivan or Christina Munoz are Arkansans, and yet they've been the top anchors in Arkansas.

At 11:03 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree that it doesn't matter if the main anchor is from AR either, heck the bigwigs aren't from AR. Having that "Arkansas only" mentality is a recipe for failure.

At 11:08 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

As a photog, I would be glad to get Erin and her negative attitude out of my truck more often. Put her on the desk where we don't have to deal with her.

At 11:12 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Christina will be missed. She was always professional & had the best smile in the biz.

Erin over Beth is my vote.

At 11:25 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The report said Christina is "widely recognized as one of the best communicators of our time" - she's a nice lady and all... but give me a break. Good luck to her all the same.

At 11:34 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If KATV is smart they'll go with Erin. Beth is a good anchor, but Erin is the total package and she's single with no kids.

At 11:37 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think that Erin will be Christina's replacement and she'll stay for a few years and go to a larger market.

At 11:40 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Erin over Beth is my vote too.

At 11:46 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Total package? Are you watching with the sound off? She's terrible at banter, forgets to read teases, and can't adjust on the fly. Producers need all of those qualities out of anchors at KATV. Things change quickly around here.

At 11:55 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If Erin is so intent on overhauling people who have "cushy jobs" what is it going to be like if she sits next to Scott every day? I don't think he's about to change his ways. That could make for some bad chemistry.

At 11:57 AM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Beth is good but she doesn't have the it factor like Erin does. Beth has been here since 2002 and has matured in the industry but doesn't have a major presence like Erin. When Erin walks into a room people take notice. The it factor is very powerful and will catapult you from reporter to main anchor overnight. Most people don't have the it factor, but when they do it's a major asset. It may not be fair but it's reality.

At 12:01 PM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Excellent point 11:55.

At 12:11 PM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If the anchor spot is a leadership position, then we must find a good leader. Good leaders are naturally followed, and no one follows Erin naturally.

At 12:21 PM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I find it ironic that so many people on here are envious of Erin. That signifies to me that she's either horrible or quite good, and since management is commending her for a job well done, I assume it's the latter. Keep doing what you're doing, Erin; you're obviously doing something right.

At 12:27 PM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You rock Erin! You go girlfriend! Beth you rock too. Love ya, mean it, will miss ya Christina!

At 12:42 PM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's not envy about Erin that makes me watch other station's weekend news anchors instead of her. She is a graduate of the Ned Perme Narcissism School.

At 1:01 PM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No one is envious of Erin. We just don't like her. If she was brought in to be a leader and reform the newsroom she has failed miserably and management should take note. There are ways to get people to follow you and still respect if not like you. Natural leaders have that ability, Erin does not. All she has managed to do is turn a majority of the people she's supposed to lead against her. Not to mention the cold blank stare and unapproachable demeanor she exudes on air.

At 1:02 PM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes envy implies anyone wants to be her. I think the majority of the complaints are just from people who hoped she would go away to a big market soon, thereby ridding us of her attitude. Making her an anchor might keep her around longer than we would like.

At 1:28 PM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Management created that monster and management can deal with it. If this is true, I'm out.

I'm definitely not going to follow that "leader"

At 1:57 PM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Agreed, it's one thing when it's just the weekend crew who has to deal with her for the most part... it's another thing if it's going to be every day.

At 2:05 PM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The problem is some folks are lazy and want a paycheck for mediocrity. Sorry Erin has ruffled the feathers of the lazy and mediocre.

At 2:36 PM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The lazy? Erin is not targeting any of the lazy people. I'm not going to list them here, but there are plenty of truly lazy people who get paid very well every week. She is targeting the people who bust their humps doing the real work in the newsroom every day. That's what the problem is.

KATV has listed a weekend anchor position so I was assuming that Erin was taking Christina's spot, but maybe Beth is and Erin is taking Beth's spot. Either way, Congrats to both and we'll miss you Christina.

At 4:04 PM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't see anything on their website listing a weekend anchor position opening. You must be looking at something in-house? I do see a "broadcast journalist" position. That doesn't indicate weekend anchor to me though.

At 4:21 PM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I received a email job list from my agent this morning and it has a listing for KATV Anchor/Reporter FT-Weekends. I haven't seen it listed anywhere else. @3:49, where did you see it listed?

Being an evening anchor and the mother of young children doesn't work well. I like Beth but she's the mom of a young child. Seems to me, Erin would be a better fit.

At 4:36 PM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Evening anchors who are married and have young children seem to end up quitting, taking a demotion to days or weekends, or getting divorced. It can cause a major fraction within the family.

Scott is an evening anchor with children, has never talked about getting divorced or any friction in his family.

Pamela Smith was on weekends for eternity. Erin was here for a year, maybe, and is moving up possibly. What's up with that?

At 4:53 PM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Pamela Smith sealed her own fate. If you disagree with that you simply don't know the facts of the case. Not everything is racism.

No racism implied. I don't know the facts for sure. Just putting the comment out there.

Every female anchor in LR is either divorced, single with no children, or either quit or took a demotion to have more time with their family. It's not just in this market but in a majority of markets. I'm not referring to male anchors. I'm not being sexist, but lets face it...women are the ones that keep the home running effectively, not men, so a man being a evening anchor would have little impact on the family dynamics.

It has little to do with race. Alyse Eady is Black and she bypassed being a reporter, weekend anchor, and became a weekday anchor right out of college with a salary comparable to an evening anchor.

At 5:14 PM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Alyse Eady is black? And the only reason she did what she did is because she was a beauty queen. It was emberassing to watch her when she started. She has gotten better though.

What are the anchor salaries?

At 7:39 PM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

More than yours.

At 7:42 PM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

They vary from network to network, but in AR anchors average $50k to $100k+. Weekend anchor $50k, weekday morning $65k, weekday evening $80K to over $100K depending on experience. Reporters have a starting pay of $35k. Larger the market higher the pay. Larger markets such as NYC, LA and Chicago, it's not uncommon for anchors to have $500k, million dollar, and Multi million dollar contracts and I'm not talking about national news talent, but regular market talent. Before Sue Simmons was fired from WNBC in NYC she had a $5 million dollar yearly contracts. The goal of most anchors is forward momentum to go to larger markets until you reach top markets or National news. Many añchors that have worked the LR market have gone on to top markets such as: Kate Sullivan-KATV Anchor (NYC & Chicago), TJ Holmes-THV W/E Anchor (San Francisco, CNN, MSNBC, NYC), Christina Mclarty-KATV Reporter(NYC, Entertainment Tonight), Aiyana Cristal-THV W/E Sports Anchor (Miami & Chicago), & Jessica Dean-KARK Anchor (Philadelphia) to name a few...majar markets is where you earn the $250k+ salaries. I encourage all anchors and reporters who want to move into larger markets to get a talent agent. A good agent such as myself can do wonders. I hope I was helpful.

Reporters don't make 35k to start in Little Rock. Try 25k.

At 8:03 PM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

And the anchor salaries are off too. Close but I know several anchors well over 100k.

At 8:18 PM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The going starting rate for reporters in LR is $35k and I meant for evening anchors $80k to $100k+ and yes, a couple evening anchors make $100k+. If you're a reporter making less than $35K you're being low-balled. My figures are based upon solid LR area statistical analysis. FYI, hiring a talent agent will not only help you find a good position, but those who hire TA's have higher starting salaries. TA's are the way to go...don't be afraid of success, it's waiting for you and I'm here to help you to achieve those goals.

Your figures are bullcrap.

At 8:37 PM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No sir or mam, my numbers are on point. I've been an agent for over 10 years. I work for the largest talent agency in Dallas and ive have several placements in LR and all over the U.S. if you'd like a statistical analysis for the LR market I'd be very willing to email it to you. These figures are based upon the ranges that we TA's get for our clients. I'll repeat again, anchors/reporters who are represented by agents have higher starting wages. If you work in LR and you're not making the ranges I posted, you need a new agent or an agent if you do not already have one. We make a big difference and that's why all the most respected, ambitious, and talented media talent hire an as equally talented TA.

At 8:44 PM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Dude, your numbers are wrong. Get over it and move on. Your starting number is way to high and your anchor numbers are way to low. Agents are the biggest waste of money in this industry and anybody who needed an agent to get a job in little rock is a sucker.

At 8:47 PM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm not arguing with you about your ranges but I know reporters that do not make $35K in LR. Most reporters out of college don't have agents and in LR the going rate is more like 28,500. Your anchor rates sound about right though.

At 8:58 PM, February 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@844: excuse me, but last I checked I had a vagina and wasn't a male. My figures are based upon statistics. And yes, some people in Little Rock do have agents. Pretty much every single anchor in LR that has gone to larger markets has an agent. And no, my figures are not low for LR anchor salaries. They range from $50k for weekends and $80k to over $100k for weekday evenings...those are the FACTS...no ifs, ands, or buts about it. Thank you for your opinions even if they are inaccurate.

As a talent agent I encourage all my clients to have a personal website. It's a great way to market yourself, and to let your fans know a little something extra about yourself. It's also a great way to present yourself to the world and potential employers. Personal branding is very important, especially if you work in the media. A website gives you creative freedom to express yourself and your personality in ways that are not possible through just a resume or media reel. And lastly, it offers great visability and employers love it.

i was just reading Beth Hunt page and i think she is pregnant if she is congrats to her

on munoz great dresser Great smile
Erin will get the spot
but i mean she Went to Ole Miss from Oxford Miss if Memphis or Nashville calleds she is gone

what Katv needs to do is give Erin
Beth and Alicia Dover equal time

what i would do is hire aillion munn from kait 8 jonesboro from pocahontas Very Professional she been a camera operator editor producer audio graphics operator all at Kait 8 since 2008
i would hire her for weekends and sat daybreak

she is a worker bee and with R Vaughan d davis c rickert making big bucks kait can most likely not afford her as the years move on

only negative is her outfits are a little blah mostly pant suits and black

but real friendly would be a real asset to any LR Station

I don't know if Beth is pregnant or not. If she is I don't see management moving her into Christina's spot. As someone said earlier, being a evening anchor is very difficult for a mom with young children. I personally think Erin will take Christina's spot, especially if Beth is pregnant.

Morning anchors here don't make that much. Try $40k.

At 1:14 AM, March 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

$40,000 for a morning anchor is very atypical, meaning below average. I know a morning anchor making $75k, her salary is atypical as well, but above average atypical. THV and KATV have the most competitive salaries, followed by KARK, and then Fox 16.

At 1:31 AM, March 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's obvious that's some folks don't know what average salary means. If the average salary is $50k that doesn't mean every single person makes $50k, its means some will make less, while others will make more, but as a combined total it equals $50k.

At 1:43 AM, March 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Come on Arkansans, lets use those math skills. 4 + 6 = 10: 10/2 = 5....it's pretty simple stuff. Lol

If Alex earns $65k, Brittany earns $50k, and Ethan earns $35k, what is their average salary?

D. $150K

The answerer: C. $50K

The interesting part of this post is about leadership. KATV is becoming KTHV. Really messed up. Reporters leave quickly, anchors want out of their contracts. In breeding, no real searches for quality talent. KATV used to be a leader in the industry. Multiple bureaus, helicopter and solid journalism. They would do a dozen live shots on election day. Reporters could turn more than a package a day. Now Gentry is guessing what should be done. He is lost and the ratings will be lost soon. Munoz leaving is the beginning of the end. Hail to the new ratings leader---KTHV!

The ratings have grown with genty, not dropped. How are all the staff cuts his fault? I'm sure given the choice, he'd take a larger staff, but he's doing the best with what he's got.

At 8:02, I disagree. This same argument comes up everytime a main anchor at KATV leaves and still KATV remains no. 1 and will most likely continue to be no. 1. Anchors come and go,and it's not just a LR market thing, it happens in every market. I heard the same absurdity when Kate Sullivan left for NYC. Munoz leaving is NOT the beginning of the end.

Someone posted earlier that they thought Beth is pregnant, so with a young son and a newborn on the way I doubt she'll take Christina's spot. So it's looking like Erin will be the new evening anchor.

I guess you just did. Erin is very obviously on here defending herself.

I just think Erin is so wonderful and I look forward to her anchoring each and every weekend. I hope KATV doesn't miss an opportunity to expand her role. She definitely has a bright future and if we don't seize the moment, I'm sure some other network in a top market will. Let's not allow that to occur.

At 5:19 PM, March 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ok 5:04, what is so wonderful about her? Erin is neither a good person. And what makes you think she'd stay if a big market did want her. She's not afraid to break a contract. She broke one when she came to little rock, after all. It goes back to not being a good person - you cant trust someone like that.

At 5:27 PM, March 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah that is it. I know no anchors spots are coming to me right now and I accept that. But you just don't want to see a bad person inside and out get rewarded.

Coming from CA to AR is pure cultural shock. Yes, there should be more Latinos represented in the media. We are the fastest growing population but you'd never know based on our representation in the AR media. Diversity is a beautiful thing and AR is way behind.

At 7:50 AM, March 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

11:52, you sound like you might not be in the business, so let explain something that may explain some of these kneejerk reactions to your comments. Hiring managers are under an incredible amount of pressure to higher people of color already, and have been for quite some time. The result has been less talented people of color getting jobs based on their appearance over more qualified white applicants. This is common knowledge in our industry, and as you might imagine it doesn't seem very fair if you were the white applicant getting passed by over and over. Someone mentioned Jeanette, that is perfect example of someone getting special treatment because of her ethnicity. She was hired with no experience whatsoever. That has just never occurred with a white applicant before at katv that I can remember in over 20 years at the station. So you see you might be striking a nerve with those comments unnecessarily.

At 8:12 AM, March 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@750: You are wrong. KATV has hired many reporters right out of college with little to no experience other than internships and working at university networks. I suggest you do some research before making asinine and inaccurate statements.

At 8:21 AM, March 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No, it's not necessary for me to think again, those are the facts. I suggest you research again. I can name many GAR's right out of college hired by KATV. I could name names but I find that inappropriate.

Why would that be inappropriate? Because you're wrong?

At 10:04 AM, March 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I could be wrong too, but I don't think Christina Mclarty had much experience.

That, however, was a big extenuating circumstance as well, and she is the only person of Caucasian ancestry I can think of who was hired for an on-air position without at least a little time in smaller markets.

At 10:15 AM, March 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I can't believe some people are trying to argue that people of color don't get favoritism for on-air positions. They do. That's is the fact... A 1+1=2 kind of fact.

At 10:17 AM, March 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You're right. Christina Mclarty started at KATV right out of NYU. I know a couple others too.

At 10:30 AM, March 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

This conversation is amusing to me. I'm no longer in the business, but in the late 90's I actually had a news director tell me, "sorry, but we are looking for a minority to fill this position." FYI, I am a white male, former reporter, who was on an interview. I wish all phones would have had audio capturing devices back then. I used to often wonder what kind of settlement I could have received, if I had been able to prove it.

At 10:31 AM, March 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

To say there aren't qualified Latinos is a bold-face lie. The problem is they aren't looking hard enough. I'll reiterate again, Latinos are underrepresented and that's a fact. Another fact is, if a Latino or any person of color is hired they have to be twice as talented as their Caucasian counterpart. Being white and average is the norm, but as a Latino you have to be superior to even have the same opportunity.

At 10:42 AM, March 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ok, 10:31, you are officially rebuked. You have no idea what you are talking about. It is very difficult to find qualified Latino reporters who are willing to work of for the money offered in this market. Those that have experience can often times bypass this market altogether, which anyone would do if they could. Those are the facts. The end.

At 10:44 AM, March 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

10:31, must be living in 1985. Absolutely uniformed asinine statements.

At 10:53 AM, March 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

10:31 I am for increasing Latino candidates as well, but I can sit here and tell you what the others have said is not true. You will not win this argument, because seem a little misinformed.

Latino candidates do have a leg up on whites. I see this as necessary to help better represent and cover our community, but to say Latino candidates have to be any more talented than white candidates is incorrect. It's really the other way around. I hope this helps.

At 11:27 AM, March 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The fact of the matter is, a lot of people in Arkansas aren't very worldly and are insensitive to anything different. There is a whole big world out there full of diversity. I grew up in Southern CA surrounded by diversity and there just isn't that aspect in AR. People in AR love to stereotype and categorize people into groups instead of judging them on Individual merit. I still can't get past the fact that some people here think that all Latinos are Mexican. I'm fortunate to look Caucasian, so I get treated well because I'm educated, live in the right neighborhood, and I'm considered "safe." But I'm not ok with that, not every Latino or person of color has that luxury to blend in with "White America." What about my brown skin little cousins' who are prejudged the minute they walk into a room. These issues are reality and sugar-coating it solves nothing. Sometimes the truth is hard to swallow, but trust me, it will set you free.

At 11:52 AM, March 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sounds like you are judging "white America" to me.

At 12:01 PM, March 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Quick search at KATV yields this result. There are 22 on air personalities listed at KATV website. This includes Renee Shapiro who is only on once a week and Joan Early who only does an occasional family first at 5. According to the us census Arkansas' population in 2010 was 6.4%. Divide 22 by 3 (the number of Latinas at KATV and you get 7.3%. Looks like KATV is doing fine in that regard. And anyone who says minorities don't get a better shot at job opportunities is plain wrong. If there are two EQUALLY QUALIFIED candidates the minority will get the job the majority of the time. I've been passed up for a job because of affirmative action as well. Was actually told by the lady doing the hiring that she recommended me for the job but was forced to hire a minority because they ended to fill a quota. How is that not racism? I wasn't hired because of the color of my skin.

At 12:11 PM, March 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Dear person from California,
Stop whining. You are losing this argument at every turn. You keep making blanket incorrect statements about how Latinos are forced to work harder to get jobs. It's not true at all.

Just be happy and thankful that you have your Latino edge. Many people on this blog would be pleased to have such an advantage.

12:01, as I assume this did happen in the age of recording devices on cell phones and the like, I would encourage you next time to tape your interview conversations. What they did to you is highly illegal and you could make a lot of money in a settlement.

At 12:36 PM, March 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It was actually before common recording devices. I got the feeling that the hiring gal told me because she was mad as well but a white guy suing for racial discrimination 12 years ago would have been an exercise in futility.

After I graduated from college, I worked full-time during the day, and went to law school part-time at nights and trust me, my professors didn't care that I was a Latino. People took for granted that I got into law school because of AA, but that's the farthest thing from the truth. Qualification got me in the door and dedication and disciple got me a law degree and not my ethnicity or cultural background. I could have joined some major corporation or law firm but I chose to accept a job making $35K, working as an advocate for disenfranchised people of all backgrounds regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, or any other factor. I'm a champion for fairness and I find reward in the work I do because it makes a difference. When I see an injustice or disparity you best believe I'm going to stand up and advocate for my client no matter if they are white, black, Asian, Latino, or any combination. It may not be popular, but ive never been one to follow what's popular, but rather what is right.

After 35 years as a news director in small and middle southern markets (50-90), I know that “cheap” is the operative word in the minds of GM’s and ND’s when hiring what we all like to call “talent” (I use that word inclusively). LOW BALLING is the modus operandi. Even if the ND seems to be a good “guy” with your best interests at heart, she most likely is under the thumb of the front office. She has a budget and she best not blow it on talent. Unless you are established in your market and the stations are competing for your services, you won’t get the big—or even adequate—bucks. But there is hope. First, know what you’re worth. Talk to every news grunt you can find in the mkt. Kiss up to the receptionist—he’ll know everything, even if it’s a bit exaggerated. Dig up as much info as you can before the interview. Know what the market pays its best talent.
If you have the “muchos cojones, “use them in negotiations. Don’t accept the first offer. Sit up straight with a pleasant smile on your face, look her in the eye and toss out a number you know will leave her just short of gagging. If she has a real problem with your asking price, suggest a substantial one-time signing bonus to help compensate. Avoid back-end contract offers unless you are certain you won’t be fired before the contract expires. Right- to-work states have all kinds of legal outs for managers who don’t want to honor contracts. When you have pushed it as far as you can without being kicked out and you still don’t have a good offer, thank her for her time, tell her you’ll give her chance to talk to GM , hand her your card and leave quietly with a “I’ll talk to you soon.” If they want you, they’ll come back with a counter offer. If they really want you, and know they are competing for your services with other stations in the market they might even meet your demands. If, after all that, you are still being low balled, you don’t want to work with those kinds of people anyway. If you are desperate for the money and there are no other offers anywhere, then you probably don’t belong, nor should you want to be “in the business." Or you can always hire an agent.

I actually think she may have less of an opportunity to act that way. There are lots of other people during the week who have a say in what happens.

Regardless of that, most people in the newsroom have been looking to leave for quite a while, and it has nothing to do with who sits in the anchor chair.

Anyone who would leave because one person got a job, does not have much invested in their career to begin with. Of course, with salaries so low in television news, it isn't surprising so many people do not have much to lose. So yes, quitting is easy and maybe the best thing for everyone.

Hey 10:19 - I'm not in management at KATV or any other station. I am a viewer of local TV news. I started reading this blog to learn about happenings at the local stations. (The newspaper once had a regular media article that told such stories, but no more.) But now you people seem to spend more time complaining about your jobs and your lives than actually trying to do anything to improve them.

Hey viewer, Little Rock tv people have always complained. It's not a very nice place to work, because salaries are very low and people move here without ever meaning to stay. While friends from college are making good money and living the 20 something good life, we are eating ramen noodles and telling ourselves it will all pay off someday. Most people don't wander around depressed about it all day, but this is a sounding board for when people do feel like lamenting about it.

At 12:48 PM, March 09, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Complaining is not limited to Little Rock. And you can live the good life at any age. As with everything else some cities and markets are better then others. The salaries, nightlife, and other activities here in the #5 Dallas-Fort Worth market are amazing, and I highly recommend all of you apply with the stations here. Even if you're not in broadcasting I highly recommend you all relocate here asap. The money is great, and it's a straight shot down I-30 to go back to LR to visit whenever you want.
