This from a tipster: Chuck Maulden out as KTHV news director.
Maulden came to Channel 11 in October 2007. Before that he had been news director at KSDK-TV in St. Louis Mo.

Caplan is not going anywhere. The whole news room management better get their tapes together because this is just the first shake up. Liz's contract hasn't been renewed and it will not. Dawn might want to show up to work before 3pm and read scripts before going on air. Dawn be a leader!
Maulden wasn't ND at KSDK. I think he was Operations Manager. Before that he spent several years at KARK as a photographer. Nice guy. I wish him the best.
Chuck is a really nice person. But he was ill-equipped to be a news director. I wish him the best.

Why isnt there anything on this blog about the new weather on KARK Has anybody noticed how bad the weather girl on THV has gotten over the last couple days with ED Bunker being on vacation and she keeps getting worse on air doing her scripted weather forecasts .
Poor decision maker. Bad manager. Terrible eye for talent. How did he last 5 years? Just consider all the experienced and talented people who left 11 on his watch.
Good guy? I don't know about that.
Awful ND? Absolutely.
The weather guy on KARK is a temporary until they find a replacement for Darby.
An advertising agency perspective: The next news director is really gonna have his/her work cut off for him/her. The news department appears to lack direction and an identity. Some of that is Maulden's fault but upper management -- all the way to Gannett -- also shares responsibility for allowing it to persist. (The previous GM was allowed to dismantle all the good things that station had done.)
The station seems to have fallen back to pre-2000 levels before it rose from a distant third to number one. It can be done again with the right people and vision in place.
Chuck does not have the drive that is needed in a newsroom. He's too nice of a guy. No sense for news or talent either. The time has come for a swift and forceful broom. Good luck Chuck.
From a viewer's perpective...
We don't care what time Dawn shows up for work. She can show up at 4:59, leave at 5:31, split a pint and calzone at Vino's with Liz and discuss how horrible the reporters are, show up at 5:59, leave at 6:31, take care of her motherly duties, come back at 9:59 and go home for the night at 10:31.
We the viewers don't care what happens behind the scenes.
The problems are not with the anchors; the problems are the amateur reporters.
I hope Liz doesn't get the Acx; however if she does, another station in town will hire her. She is down to earth, likeable, and PROFESSIONAL on the air.

I think Sarah is doing just fine with the weather. Nice on the eyes also. I'd rather see her than Buckner any day. Or those Mitchell teeth.
Sarah needs to attend a broadcast school for some tutoring. In a few years she will be ready for tv but not now. Worse than Meridith when she started.

Whatever problems KARK had with Darby must have been off camera. He sure seemed nice enough and had a good personality. Steve Adamson drives me up the wall with his constant pacing back and forth in front ot the weather map.

Sarah is improving, Meredith has not improved. She still seems nervous on camera.
By the way, Meredith is a beautiful woman in person, but something about the dim lighting, her blonde hair, and the green screen don't go well together.
Will THV look in house or across the street? Fox ND is looking for a gig.
They can't look in house. There is nobody in house that could do it. They need somebody local that is familiar with the Little Rock market. If they bring somebody in from out of state, they will shoot themselves in the foot. Surely they know that.

Wasn't Raines a news director at THV once before?
Whoever 11 hires needs bring some common sense and stability back to the newsroom. Some of the recent decisions are head-scratchers. And, you never know which anchors you'll see on a particular newscast.
I agree that the news director should have local historical knowledge.
It's doubtful Raines would want to go back - so why not spend the money and lure Nick Genty back over from 7.
Are you kiddin? Why would Nick want to return to THV when he's already the news director for the Number 1 station in the market? THV is a rebuilding project.
If Cappy was smart, he'd reach out across the street to see if he was interested.
7 was a much easier fix than THV will be. At 7, all you needed was someone to pay attention.
Nick is not leaving KATV, period. He's working for an ownership group that will actually invest in the product as opposed to Gannett which sucks it dry. THV had its chance to make Nick news director when Raines left a few years ago but didn't do so.
It doesn't like Albritton is putting to much money in KATV. That set look awful.
So the word on the streets is Michelle Chism is going to be fire this week.
Chism needs to go. The assignment desk needs to be restaffed as well. Chuck was not well- served by his newsroom supervisors.

It's gonna be a pretty rough November book for THV. No leadership. They need to hire a news director ASAP in hopes of trying to salvage what they can and, at the very least, stop the bleeding in November or - more likely - February.
Dawn is going to anchor 5,6 and 10. She is also going to have to show up at 2pm. If not she will be fired.
Any thoughts on who will take the ND role? All I have seen on here is who will not take it.
The new ND at THV will be someone that is not at the station. There will be no one left from the current news management team.
I hope they are getting their resumes and tapes ready
Before they even think about firing Dawn they should try hiring at least one other person who isn't absolutely awful. Dawn is the only decent personality they have at any hour.
I was excited to hear THV was getting a new anchor. But after watching Matt Turner, I have to say, I dont like him.

He has odd shadows on his face, no lips, an arched eyebrow anchor man issue, fidgets too much, looks uncomfortable in two shots, I can go on...
The fact that he has been an anchor for years doesnt mean he is good or appealing to the audience.
He will not help ratings.
As few as 10 years ago, Little Rock was on par with markets like Memphis, Nashville and even Saint Louis. Nowadays, the news product across the board has been watered down so much by beancounting GMs and NDs, that Little Rock now looks more like Fort Smith or Jonesboro.
KTHV, by far, has the worst on-air product in the market. I don't know if Maulden was having a contest with the other NDs in town to see who could hire the worst on-air talent, but if he was, he won a long time ago. How many anchors are on their evening newscasts, 12? And this new guy they hired to anchor? He has the personality of a doorknob and the natural movement of a robot.
In fact, none of 11's anchors are anything to brag about.
LR used to be a big time market you had to work your way up to; now you've got folks who should be in Jonesboro doing the news in Little Rock. And the sad part? It doesn't seem like any of the old timers at 11 are mentoring or grooming these ultra-green reporters.
I heard reporters at 11 not only have to shoot and edit all their stuff, but have to sign 3 year contracts. Who would bind themselves to a station like that? Who's that desperate to be on TV?
Meanwhile, Fox 16, which produces a quality newscast, gets the lowest ratings. I guess LR people are so used to mediocrity that they don't know what good news looks like anymore.

The lower quality news in little rock centers around:
Sales getting involved in news.
Less news time. commercials breaks run 3:00 or longer now. ten years ago, breaks were only 1:30.
Despite more commercials, news budgets continue to be cut.
Corporate pushes for younger, cheaper, inexperienced reporters/anchors and smaller staff size.
General managers that don't care about news or understand it.
I wish there was still a media writer at the Arkansas Democrat Gazette that would bring these crucial issues to its readers. Quality journalism plays an important role in society and we are losing it fast!
I admire the quality journalists that still fight for what is right. It just seems to be a losing battle. Ratings and credibility will continue to fall and general managers and corporate will wonder who killed the golden goose. All they will have to do is look in mirror.
Let's not forget that FOX16 is going away at the first of the year. The Deathstar folks are here cutting as I write
Nexstar will be cutting jobs at channels 4 and 16.

Either the "lose that fat" guy dressed like a granny. The "cool" Asian kid selling furniture. Or the lawyer with the yellow teeth - zoomed in for super close-up.

Matt is awful! Why oh why oh why did they add him to the mix? He brings nothing to the table except awkwardness and stiffness.
Someone has an agenda. Matt is doing well but a couple folks don't seem to be on board because they see change and worry they will be gone soon.

Matt is to good for THV. Great guy too. People keep leaving at FOX16....so far 4 photogs and 1 reporter gone since the sell annoucement.
Too good? Either you are good friends with him, are him, or haven't been watching him on the news. What a disappointing move for THV when they could have waited for the right person to come along. They either got him cheap or were desperate.
Haha @2:17 that fat loss center commercial is the most unprofessional thing I've ever seen in my life. It makes me cringe when it comes on (which is about six times an hour).

The most unprofessional one is the yellow teeth lawyer. Who in their right mind allowed the super close-up shot at the end? He probably insisted on it - but someone should have given him a reality check. Or fake the funk & put some liquid paper on those tombstones as a quick fix. Good grief.

loSOO I guess THV tonight has no sports? The Anchors just read a lil bit about Hogs. UMMM excuse me there are more teams in Arkansas besides the Razorbacks to fill a show. I do not like the 10 anchors per show. Very disrupting! I do like Matt Turner.

Rumor on the street is a THV is in talks with someone in the market already. Stay tuned...
Matt Turner actually was not hired on a dicount but quite expensive considering that it took almost a month disputing the salary . Also Matt Turner did pretty well on KNWA up in Fayetteville but for whatever reason he isnt the same person down here. Watch the interview with Jeff Long that Matt Turner did a back in June he was alot better. One thing I remember about him on KWNA was that he had alot shorter headlines to read and then sent to the taped package up in KNWA compared THV where I notice he has to speak alot more do some awkward addlibing after the headlines . Maybe its the bad habits that he has formed being in a layed back market up in northwest Arkansas where nobody really cares who the news anchors are as long as they have pretty good weather guy and people that are experts on Razorback sports .
Whoever that local person THV may be talking to, I hope it's not an internal candidate. We need a person to provide leadership and direction for our news product. We're like a bunch of ants right now -- everyone going in their own direction. I've eavesdropped on the anchors talking among themselves, and I think there is someone in particular that they support though I don't know who.
The local person they are talking to is not anyone at KTHV. The person is from Arkansas and has worked in the market for awhile. They approached the person to get their take on KTHV from someone on the outside
There is NO WAY they will hire Raines. So he should stop posting on here alluding to that.

Mr. Caplan will hire a smart ND to put the right people on morning and evening shifts. The anchors are all great in their own way and will shine if given the best opportunity. I like Dawn, Matt, Liz, Ed and Craig. I also enjoy Brannon but cannot say the same for other talent. 11 needs a management overhaul beginning with Chism.
