What to do When the Remote Control Breaks....

This from at tipster:

So much for 'hubbing' of Master Control operations for Nexstar's KTAL-TV NBC 6 in Shreveport. Today they were off the air for at least an hour. A receptionist said the problem originated in Little Rock which now control's KTAL's transmitter, etc.

And this is a surprise? Get ready because it is going to happen more and more.

Did KTAL ever fix the encoder problem they've been having?

At 9:09 PM, December 08, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anything bad that happens to Nexstar makes my day.
I never watch their crappy station, what's the encoder problem?

At 10:17 PM, December 08, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Those of us who are watching over-the-air are the redheaded stepchildren of the TV watchers anyway, so I doubt that it is considered such a tragedy when we lose their signal for a period of time.

At 12:17 AM, December 09, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If you are watching over-the-air you are getting the best quality video and audio.

I imaging that person in MC at KARK is busy controlling all the transmitters and running all the spots for all those Nexstar stations. Doing the work of four people saves the company a ton of money.

someone told me that all 8 nextar stations were off...gotta love computer automation

At 9:54 AM, December 09, 2011, Anonymous Gollum said...

Yes, YES! Gives us more computer animation. We needs it. We needs it to make more of the precious.

At 11:17 AM, December 09, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Good one there Gollum, but don't you mean "automation" not animation?

I have been reading the threads on this blog and there seems to be a lot of major problems at KTAL. If things really are as bad as some have posted I wonder how any one is able to work there.

At 2:23 PM, December 09, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well, apparently they don't need any MC operators, announcers, transmitter engineers, or sales staff. Guess they are doing pretty well with all the cuts.

Remember Murphy's Law.

At 7:33 PM, December 09, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well one's thing for sure, they certainly don't have too many newspeople either. Just a bunch of prompter-readers and J-school rejects.

At 2:18 PM, December 10, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

All stations have prompter readers now. That has been standard industry wide for a couple of decades now. If you want to see better on air talent like we use to have, then I suggest two options. Option one is you bombard the local stations and their corporate home offices with phone calls, e-mails, and letters voicing you concerns. Option two is move to a larger market who have better trained, and more mature on air talent who were born before the Reagan and Bush administrations.

At 5:52 PM, December 10, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

locally speaking, I too tire of the lack of news professionals. These howdy-doody types / meat-puppets with their over-enunciation and smarmy vocal delivery are irritating. I would suggest that folks read the paper for local news. It's not the best but at least you don't have to listen to these clowns AND you'll get a few more details at least because the writer has to fill a few column inches as opposed to a 30 second VOSOT. For TV news that matters, watch network or cable.

At 7:13 PM, December 10, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You're kidding, read the Shreveport times?
That's worse than KTAL.

At 11:36 PM, December 10, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If you don't like the tv stations and the paper then call U-Haul and move it on down the road.

At 4:56 PM, December 12, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So it was not just KTAL off air, but all 8 stations they run from Little Rock? KTAL use to go off air with transmitter and equipment problems all the time before the consolidation. Seems like the same old problems are still there even though there is now in Little Rock.

At 5:34 PM, December 12, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So in other words it's not just KTAL but the whole company that sucks?

At 8:57 PM, December 12, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes, that is exactly what I am saying.

At 9:12 AM, December 13, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I have to agree with you. I have seen the stations Nexstar runs in Monroe and Fayetteville and they are horrible.

At 12:15 PM, December 13, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Actually, the Shreveport Times carries more information in a story than the TV stations who (BTW) use the Times for storyleads in their newscasts. While the Times isn't the greatest, they at least have to fill more space and do contain more useful information than the VOSOT / Sdbites that make most of the reporting on all the local stations.
Say what you want but it takes more writing/reporting skill to be a newspaper reporter than it does to be a TV reporter. At least that appears to be the case in Shreveport.

At 1:16 PM, December 13, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I was on sick leave for a few days and watched some of the extended newscasts that KTBS and KSLA have and I have to say what a waste of time.
I would've thought each station would bring more local news to viewers, figuring they'd have to fill more airtime. But nope, instead there were reruns of previous stories and boring, non-news packages from cablenews sources that ran on and on which had nothing to do about local. To me this is just being lazy. Nothing new local whatsoever.

On one station they blather on sports to the point of nausea, thinking they're like ESPN (NOT!) and KSLA weather dorks are mind-numbing with their storm-tracking palaver (that means talk unnecessarily at length). I can't see this so-called "extended coverage" as news at all; it's bullshit wrapped in a bow. I kept waiting for something enlightening to happen. On KSLA they have a morning "Hometown Show" that I thought might be interesing..NOT! Poorly done TV infomercials masquerading as feature segments with some goofy woman interviewing local businesses and charities. Sooo lame! Doesn't anyone even try at producing local programs anymore?

Glad I was sick, I couldn't imagine tuning in to this junk on purpose. Thank god for satellite and internet.

At 11:01 PM, December 13, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

1:16 Just be glad you don't have to work at KTBS and KSLA doing those hour long newscasts from 6;00-7:00 or the hour long newscast KTAL does on KPXJ from 9:00-10:00. We do not have enough local news to justify having and hour long newscast at that time. KTBS started the hour long news @ 6:00 and KSLA followed several months later.

Don't forget the morning shows on KSLA and KTBS cutting off the last thirty minutes of the CBS and ABC overnight news to start the morning show at 4:30 instead of 5:00 like they always have.

I think it was on Monday's 6:00pm newscast I saw the same CNN package run on KTBS and KSLA within a minute of each other. They have been doing that a lot over the past several months. They have also been running the same local story's in the same order on both stations lately.

At 9:10 AM, December 14, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

With all that "filling time" then obviously the quality of the product goes down.

At 12:41 PM, December 14, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The quality has gone down and it shows. Over the past two months I had several friends and relatives who have come back home for visits from all over the country. Most of them have not been here in years but all of them commented on how bad our local news has become. They all remember KSLA and KTBS being very strong with good anchors and reporters. Half of them said the talent at KSLA and KTBS now look like they are straight out of J-school. When I suggested watching KTAL every one of them busted out laughing and wanted to know if they were still as bad as they use to be.

At 1:38 PM, December 14, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

True that. Be glad you don't work at KTAL. We are embarrassed to admit we work here.

At 7:39 PM, December 14, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Okay...so tonight I'm watching KTAL for the NBC Evening News with Brian Williams, and twice in the middle of the newscasts, some TV spot for Satellite TV pops in the middle of a news story. The spot runs about 20 seconds and then pops out back to the tail-end of the story. WTF guys? I can't imagine this being a network foul-up! Geez!

At 8:07 PM, December 14, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Your right. That would be a master control mess up.

At 12:52 AM, December 15, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well, in the Little Rock market, and probably at the same time in the middle of a story, viewers saw about 12 seconds of a Bensky's Furs commercial in NBC Nightly News. Bensky's Furs is in Little Rock.

I guess that will be blamed on "Computer Error" which is no such thing. Computers can't make errors as they merely do what a PROGRAMMER tells them to do. I think someone pushed the wrong button at "Mission Control" in Little Rock.

The only word for this is FUBAR.

At 12:55 AM, December 15, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Additional to above post. Maybe "they" need to get that one poor guy some help in MC at KARK.

Naaaa. Costs too much to do that.

At 10:55 AM, December 15, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That is so true. Now KARK did hire some new master control operators for the new "mission control." None of those positions were offered to the mcos in Monroe and Shreveport who were laid off. The problem is you have one mco running two or three stations at one time where there use to be eight mcos running eight stations. Mess ups like this are bound to happen and will.

Hum, Are the execs in Irving are trying to cash out before Nexstar implodes. Maybe they should get a bail out from Jerry Jones. He has the money and they have been sucking up to him for while.

At 12:46 PM, December 15, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

OMG, that is a horrible idea. He would turn Nexstar into Jerry TV. His head is big enough already without owning a 30 some odd tv stations around the country.

At 9:43 PM, December 15, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ahhh, yes. Jerry and the ArkLa Gas Cowboys.

Haven't watched a Cowboy's game since they fired Landry.

At 10:58 AM, December 16, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The very first thing Jerry did when he bought the Cowboys was fire Tom Landry so you haven't watched a game since 1989.

Who is in charge of programming at KTAL? Has that been out sourced to Little Rock or is it still in house? Where ever it is, and who ever it is, they need to get it together. For months now a lot of KTAL's programming does not match what is listed on the guide.

At 3:08 PM, December 17, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That is right. I haven't and won't be watching. My delight is hearing that the Cowboys have been defeated in each game and I delight much.

Anyone hear any rumblings about KARK being sold by Nexstar?

At 11:53 PM, December 17, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

OK, which mco in Little Rock just screwed up the 11:45 break in Saturday Night Live? In the middle of the break everything went black and they rolled the next break and are re-airing that same break right now.

At 12:23 AM, December 18, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I saw that too... the doubled the break with Texarkana College Spring and some furniture store. Come on KTAL...this is pre-loaded in the traffic list. Why can't you guys get this shit right?

At 12:43 PM, December 18, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

11:19 PM I have also heard the same rumors about Nexstar selling KARK, but everyone has stopped talking about it. That leads me to believe it may happen. If it does happen I do not see the new company keeping the hub at KARK. I know about a station in New York that was the hub for 10 stations. When it was sold the hub was dismantled and master control and all the other departments went back to their original stations.

At 3:22 PM, December 18, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well what Nexstar did by consolidating MC in one hub is cut costs, that's a no-brainer. By reducing expenses, it makes the balance sheet look good to prospective buyers. Nexstar bascially lets the market know that they may want to sell a station in a given market. After feelers are out, they consider their options and if th offer is good, they sell. They've been doing that recently.

Gist of Wall Street Article:

"The company was founded in 1996 by Perry Sook with the aim of consolidating network-affiliated TV stations in mid-size markets. It went public in 2003. Nexstar tried unsuccessfully to sell itself in 2007, a move that was spurred partly by private-equity interest in TV broadcasters.

Nexstar hasn't turned a profit in the past 10 years, but the company grew its 2010 revenue 24% to $313.4 million from the previous year. The company has been taking steps to reduce its roughly $630 million of debt, and its first-quarter results were helped by an improvement in the overall climate for national and local advertising, its executives have said."

At 10:51 AM, December 19, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hum, well that explains a lot. Speaking of sales revenue, why didn't KTAL sell out their primetime Sunday Night Football inventory last night. Can't sell out primetime. MC is messing up. Programming doesn't match. Get it together people.

I think the problem lies in the fact that board ops no longer have to have an FCC License like many of us did "back in the day".

Most of these morons were previously working the drive-thru at McDiddy's and have NO IDEA what the hell a transmitter is.

"What's it mean when the little light comes on?"

Duh...

At 7:07 PM, December 19, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Exactly, and it really shows in the product. Over the past decade I have been dealing with master control operators who are totally unqualified with zero experience in broadcasting. They are coming in from jobs at McDonalds, Dominos, Valero, Zales, ect... Dumb as dirt and very unreliable. Constantly late and call in all the time.

When broadcast station owners/managers and the FCC started letting anyone walk in off the street and be hired as an "Engineer" without even the faintest clue of what it takes to get a First Class Radiotelephone (now called a General Class) license it was the doom of good operating practices in this country. The people that management is hiring these days to program computers and be responsible for delivering good-quality-on-air products are lucky to be able to turn a light switch on. More of the dumbing down of America, thanks partly to our government in the form of the FCC which has become a gaggle of lawyers and it will get worse as time goes on. All this so the station owners can save a buck and put more money in their pockets.

As bad as the mco's are we use to have some really good ones over the years. I wish we had them here right now, but all of them are gone now and most of them have gotten out of broadcasting all together.

I don't beleive it. KTAL is actually advertising job openings on the Nexstar website. Just goes to show you miricles still happen.

Is KTAL ever going to broadcast local stuff in HD? I mean the transition has been on for well over a year and still getting fuzzy ol' standard definition on my plasma screen. Looks bad guys.

At 12:28 AM, December 22, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes, we know and the answer is no. We are not going to add local HD. That would require buying equipment that Nexstar will not approve.

At 10:21 AM, December 22, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That sounds typical. After reading several of these posts this Nexstar company must be as horrible as everyone claims.

10:21 I don't know how things are at other Nexstar station, but KTAL is a horrible place to work. Even with the things posted on here you don't know the half of it.

What's the deal with KTAL's sales department? Obviously they can't sell. If they could they would not be run all those promos in the newscasts and prime time.

Why was the Nexstar Close just run at the end of the break going into the wx open? Very sloppy.

At 7:48 PM, December 23, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I have noticed all the promo fill myself. You would think they would have advertisers throwing money at them to get on the air this time of the year. Guess they are spending all their advertising money at KSLA and KTBS.

Why is KTAL covering network by airing a Lander's Dodge paid program right now during primetime?

At 10:14 AM, December 26, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, what's that all about? Who is in charge of programming KTAL? You did not run Chuck in primetime Thursday from 7:00-8:00 but you ran local programming instead. Then you ran Chuck Saturday night between the 10:00 PM news and Christmas from the Vatican. Why? That was stupid.

At 11:09 AM, December 28, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Over the past few months I have seen more and more breaks either being missed or run late. I don't think we are supposed to see the NBC Peacock or the static shot of Rockefeller Center? Looks like moving the control room to Little Rock was not such a great thing after all.

At 2:43 PM, December 28, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Moving MCO to LR may suck for viewers and on-air look but to Nexstar Execs, all they really care about is cutting costs and having one person do the work (badly) of 5 people. Bottomline thinking & management by spreadsheet, plain & simple.

At 5:55 PM, December 28, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You are right. It is visibly obvious running MC ops remote is not working as far as the on air product. I wonder how long before Nexstar implodes like Enron? After all both Enron and Nexstar are Texas corporations.

At 11:43 PM, December 28, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Almost nightly you can see the switcher bite someone in the butt during the news on KARK.

If not the switcher the audio person is late with the mics too often.

I think someone should at least hold their hand until they learn their jobs.

Just saying . . .

At 9:49 AM, December 29, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I've seen what you are talking about with KARK every time I'm up there.

KTAL does the exact same thing here. Clipped mics. Mics with dead batteries. Switching the wrong story or the wrong graphics. Mis-spealled graphics.

KTAL is constantly getting various areas of Shreveport and town names wrong. Examples; El Dorado Casino and El Dorado Arkansas are spelled the same, but they are NOT pronounced the same. Pines Road and Buncombe Road are in West Shreveport, NOT Southwest Shreveport. Mansfield Road and the Southern Hills area is in South Shreveport. All the shopping centers on Youree Drive and East 70th are in East Shreveport, NOT South Shreveport.

Things like these are infuriating. I know the anchors, reporters and producers are not from here, but KTAL really needs to hire someone from here who knows these things. The lack of attention to detail is one of the main reasons KTAL will always be in third place.

At 2:07 PM, December 29, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Heard a second-hand rumor that they were going to bring in some broadcast talent with experience that had local ties to the area but they opted for less experience, cheaper pay. Also heard KTAL barely has the basics in the studio to make a newscast, lousy mics, studio gear, no monitors, etc. Held together by patchwork & duct-tape from what I heard. They're keeping costs down for possible sale to show how "lean & mean" they are to possible buyers.

At 3:52 PM, December 29, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If you saw the equipment they have to deal with you would be surprised they are able to get on air. BPCC has better equipment then KTAL.

At 6:18 PM, December 29, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KTAL has the worst control room and equipment in this market.

At 8:21 PM, December 29, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

BPCC has a very nice telcomm dept with lots of toys. Too bad they suck so bad with their student TV shows. Seems like some of the faculty likes to play movie director during the summer breaks.

At 9:50 AM, December 30, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah we know 8:21. They have been doing that since before you were in kindergarten.

Nexstar as a company must have the worst switchers in every market they're in. I have seen the same switching problems on Nexstar owned stations in Shreveport, Monroe, Little Rock, Fayetteville, Terra Haute, and Abilene. If Nexstar spent some of that acquisitions money on better switchers and other equipment, instead of buying other stations, they would have a much better product with ratings to match.

At 10:57 AM, December 30, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

As with a lot of corporations, growth seems to come from acquisition instead of improving existing markets and the stations that they already own. Nexstar Corp. hasn't shown a profit in 10 years but they show an increase in revenues due mostly to increasing the size of their group. Thing is though they owe like $500 million+ in debt. It's all about cash-flow and leverage management; hoping for a big buy-out. But I think they'll shift to either a regional sell-off or piecemeal sell-offs. Lesser- performing properties will be sold at a loss for write-off benefits applied to more profitable properties. Call it a business-hunch.
You have to realize that in business, people don't consider debt so much as they do revenue performance. While to working-janes & joes like us, it seems lopsided but to CFO's, high debt is no big deal as long as they have sustainable revenue. That's been Nexstar's management focus as is the case with other local stations. So what if we suck, we can continue to manage debt as long as national/regional spot is good and local sales keep in the black and operating costs are low.
Just the way it is from a corporate POV.

At 6:34 PM, December 30, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

From you lips to gods ears. I hope KTAL gets sold off first.

I agree with one of the previous posts that if Nexstar does sell off KTAL, or any of the other stations, the hub system will be dissolved.

At 5:51 PM, December 31, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KTAL has a lot of debt associated with it and not just from the sale from the previous owner WHECO Media. When Nexstar bought the station, it was in such a bad state of condition and technical disrepair that they were seriously considering scrapping it and moving into a more centrally located building in Shreveport. But they decided to retrofit the old bldg and re-do the cabling, power, transmitter control, etc. Guess it was cheaper. Plus then GM Dan Bates did a repeat of what he did at his former stations, he added a station bureau in Texarkana at the Mall, which probably killed any new(er) building ideas. KTAL's expense column is pretty considerable so something major would have to budge it to the sales tipping point. Nexstar wants to see some ratings increase in local news so as to enhance perceived value. It's anyones guess what will happen though, but if they stick to amortization analysis, KTAL will be kept on as a write off until someone wants to pony up the asking price.

At 6:48 PM, December 31, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, I was there when they were talking about moving the station to downtown in 2002. That idea died even before the Richmond Mall bureau opened, and before Dan Bates left to work for Rupert Murdock in Romania and Blake Russell left for the VP/GM position in Fayetteville in 2004.

You know KTAL was #1 in revenue for all of Nexstar until they bought KARK right? So if KTAL has all this debt what about all the other station Nexstar owns? How bad is their debt?

At 6:53 PM, December 31, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That is individual station by station debt.

At 2:53 PM, January 01, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KTAL used to be strong in revenues until Nexstar went on a shopping spree and bought all those other stations. But revenue is one thing, debt amortization is quite another. The thing is if a company has too much debt to service, it will affect dividends (if any) which will affect stock price which reflects company value. Debt can be assigned different ways depending on accounting methods. Right now Nexstar as a group has about $500 to $600 mil in debt and has gotten an investment banker to try and structure a potential sales scenario. With this economy it is a tall order to get a $1 Billion sale, not impossible but unlikely to happen soon. My guess is they will divest some properties on a piece-by-piece basis.

At 5:16 PM, January 01, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I heard through the grapevine that KTAL's website revenues were equal to or even greater than their local spot revenues. If that's the case, what does that tell you?

At 10:00 PM, January 01, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Are you serious? KTAL's website is not that great. I am curious to know what the commercial revenues are now compared to what they were when Kay and Stan were there. I lost the list I had of all the advertisers who left when Stan quit. They still advertise just not with KTAL.

At 12:59 AM, January 02, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Master Control operators, transmitter engineers, IT computer people, sales staff and custodians will be the last to leave a tv station.

If you are not in that listing, get the Hell out while you can.

At 12:07 PM, January 02, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I disagree with you. Master Control Operators and engineering positions have already been eliminated by Nexstar. For example, KTAL used to have 5 MOC's in the building and now have 0. Nexstar's NBC and Fox affiliates in Monroe used to have 8 MCO's in the building and now they have 0. Now there are 2 MCO's in Little Rock running 8 stations that took 8 MCO's to run in house at their individual stations. KTAL used to have 4 engineers and now they have 2. Sales is, and always have been a revolving door so they are constantly looking for AE's. It's like this all over the company.

At 1:13 PM, January 02, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I also heard that ArkLaTex Homepage ad revenues were getting close or overtaking local spot sales on KTAL. Nexstar corporate has a company associated with one of their equity partners that handles this media and apparently it is performing well. If it's true, local spot may eventually become a thing of the past.

At 3:51 PM, January 02, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That's amazing. KTAL has the worst website of the big three locals.

At 10:36 PM, January 02, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I've seen them advertise their ArkLaTex Homepage and you can tell the spots are put together somewhere else by a professional company. It's pretty clear that there's some outside webservice handling all this. You'd think they'd want to have a website with KTAL.com but why ArkLaTex HOMEPAGE is anyone's guess, pretty dumb if you ask me. I agree, their website sucks but they seem to pack it with advertising. Being that KTAL sucks ratings-wise and has high turnover in sales, just how much do you think they bring in locally? I'd say it's probably less than you'd think. Heck I've seen Football games that ran local PSA's and Promos which means they didn't or couldn't sell out. And get this, their primo late-night SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE gets Cotton's Supermarket on Jewella & Lakeshore to advertise...they must be giving that spot away.

Either that or it's a trade account where MeeShell gets her smoked meat.

10:36 It's been like that for years. They decided on the ArkLaTexHomepage name in 2002 or 2003. The reasoning behind it was to differentiate KTAL TV, from KTAL Radio. Even then everyone thought it was stupid. All the Nexstar stations have a goofy homepage names like this.

Sales have been a problem at KTAL for years, and running promos and PSA's in football and primetime is nothing new. I have seen it several times myself. When you mentioned that in your post I went back and looked through the archive, and it seems they have been doing that all season. There is also a post to a thread in the archives from for either August or September 2008 where they ran promos and PSA's in all but one break for an entire primetime football game.

SNL does not get the rev it used too. Most of the spots in SNL are either trades, make goods, or low fee spots. It varies but it's the same weeknights during the Tonight Show. Basically any spots after 11:00-11:30 are either trades, make goods, or low fee spots. Now the Tonight Show does sell out, but not always.

Hopefully all the up coming political's will help.

All stations will do well with the upcoming presidential campaign. If it weren't for political spending, a lot of stations would probably go dark or run nothing but infomercials.

I see KTAL is advertising an opening for Operations Manager. Is Mike Thomas leaving or has he been promoted to another position?

At 6:38 PM, January 04, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Dunno, maybe he got another gig somewhere else in Nexstar. Someone posted somewhere hinting that he may have been lobbying for a GM job either at KTAL or some other place.

At 7:35 PM, January 04, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hum, very interesting. My guess is not with KTAL. I saw Mike leaving KMSS the other day so this explains a lot.

At 10:59 PM, January 04, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I thought Thomas was Marketing & Promotions at KTAL, not operations.

Wasn't de-regulation of radio and TV a great idea?

Now we have 3 Companies that own everything in LR and other places and try to use as little manpower as possible and setup these massive control rooms like the dipshits at Equity did and it all went to hell on a regular basis.

It does not help that 99% of the people hired to run these monster control rooms previously worked at McDonalds, either!

At 5:13 PM, January 06, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's the same in Shreveport too. KMSS used to run four networks on three stations. KMSS 33 was/is FOX. KSHV 45, currently MyTV, used to be a WB primary from 7:00-9:00 and a UPN secondary from 9:00-11:00. They also ran KAQY ABC 11 for Monroe-El Dorado which is now run by KNOE in Monroe.

Its the same way with all the Shreveport radio stations.

That Mike Thomas guy was given a tour of the entire station. Normally this only happens during the interview when they are about to hire someone new.

At 8:42 PM, January 06, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Maybe so. I was there a year or so back and I asked about their master control. I got the tour too and all I was doing was picking up some dubs.

At 10:38 AM, January 07, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No that Mike guy got a tour of our entire station. Not just master control.

Leaving KTAL for KMSS... LoL! That's like leaving one leaky boat for another!

At 10:22 PM, January 07, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

At least KMSS sells out football. I just saw KTAL run promos during the local break of the Saints-Lyons game. ANy station that doesn't sell out football has problems.

What's the problem? You went into black and the end of the game, but you could hear the audio from the studio. Real professional there folks.

At 11:43 AM, January 08, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, what was that all about? You had an extra 20 minutes to get ready for the 10:00 and you still messed it up. There were so many mistakes last night I lost count.

I shouldn't expect much out of 6. I toured the station two years ago and its just as ghetto as the area its in.

Can anyone explain what is the deal with all these "Live from New Orleans" newscasts are but showing nothing but an empty street? Yeah I know the BCS game between LSU & Ala. is happening but these non-descript live shots are about as engaging as former KSLA reporter David Begnaud's phony cell-phone reports from the sales dept. saying he's at the Tyler, TX courthouse. If you're going to be live somewhere and especially New Orleans...why not show a backdrop of the skyline or Esplanade or the Riverfront... shit ...you guys might as well be coming from the Lowe's parking lot in Bossier for all we see. What a blown opportunity!!

I just wish local stations would get their HD act together. KTAL broadcasts local non-HD and then network HD and then local spots in non-HD. KSLA goes back and forth and even some CBS network stuff has blackened reduced screen and goes back & forth. KMSS is non-HD as is KSHV. I think KTBS stays HD most of the time. I never watch KPXJ so I can't comment on that but ever since I got my big Samsung for Christmas, I've been noticing just how bad our local signals are as far as consistent high definition is concerned. It's like Shreveport TV hasn't caught up with other cities.

At 5:29 PM, January 10, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Then you wasted your money on the new tv. If you want HD move somewhere like Houston or Dallas that's all HD.

At 3:23 PM, January 13, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That true and full HD is not coming to the Shreveport market any time soon. Houston and Dallas are the nearest markets that are all HD.

At 2:13 PM, January 16, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Obviously Little Rock doesn't care about the on air product. If they did they would not have messed up the Golden Globes last night like they did. How hard is it to switch, and read a format.

At 9:52 PM, January 18, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Glad I'm moving to Big D, more than just better HD signals there too!

At 1:37 PM, January 19, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well of course. People have been moving from here to Dallas for decades and HD is just an added bonus to add to all the good things about the move.

A word of advise. You need to get ready now for the huge increase in your insurance premium. Auto insurance in Dallas, Terrant and all the surrounding counties that comprise the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex is 50-60% higher then it is here in Caddo and Bossier Parish.

1:37 PM:
Thanks for the insurance head's up but I've already done the math. Yes, I'll be paying higher rent, higher insurance and dealing with more traffic. But I'm doubling my income, I'm going to choose between 2 really nice apts near a DART terminal so I won't be driving my car to/from work much. (Plus I've found N. Dallas traffic to be better than Youree Dr.)
I have a great job and my lifestyle and social life is about to go up about 100%. Better job, better digs, better amenities. It's going to be worth it, and better TV to watch to when I decide to stay home. :)

At 12:21 PM, January 20, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You are very welcome 6:45, and I don't blame you for moving. I had a lot of fun when I lived in Dallas, and I have been seriously considering moving back there myself. Best of luck to you, and have a blast.

At 6:38 PM, January 28, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I saw a local news at 6 promo inside of a break of NBC with Brian Williams and it looked incredibly pixelated / mosaic-like. This wasn't my cable signal either because after it ran the network came back on and was clean HD. What's going on guys? Are you using 8-bit Commodore computers for insertion?

At 7:38 PM, January 29, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sounds like a problem with the original source/recording, or possibly when it was transferred to Little Rock.

Speaking of problems, did you catch 6's late news Saturday night? It was a train wreak.

At 10:58 PM, January 29, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

They did the same thing again tonight. Who ever they have running weekends does not know what they are doing.

At 7:39 PM, January 30, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Guess local TV has lower standards these days. I used to switch PT at a station years ago and while we had mistakes once in awhile, it was never as bad as it is today. I remember keeping the log and listing discrepancies if they happened and if they happened too many times, I'd get called on the carpet by management. Of course this was pre-automation. Our idea of automation was the Ampex spotmaster and back-up 1" VTR's. All this new technology and to screw up as much as they do seems unbelievable.

At 12:28 PM, January 31, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yep, and there used to be an MCO in the chair 24/7 at every single station. Now at some stations we have MCO's running any where from 2 to 5 stations by their selves. With work loads like that mess up are going to happen.

Discrepancies are thing of the past. Most MCO's do not write up anything any more. How can they when they are either sleeping, playing online, or not in the control room when something happens.

At 1:20 PM, January 31, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Any news updates on whether or not Thomas is going to be GM or leave for KMSS? I saw some local Super Bowl Promos for KTAL recently that have Mike Thomas written all over it. Just curious.

So Chief Engrs/Ops Mgrs don't look at airchecks anymore? I can remember when salespeople would get calls from clients raising hell that their spots didn't run right and that would trickle down to the dumb MCO. Man have things changed that bad?

At 9:43 AM, February 01, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes, it has gotten that bad. 75% of the MCO's I have worked with were hired with zero broadcasting experience. However, it varies depending on the individual station and company. Some of these MCO's I have worked with came in to the job from places like Brookshire's, Church's Chicken, Dominos Pizza, McDonald's, Valero, and Zales Jewelers. None of them were qualified for the position and none of them lasted.

One really wonders what managers do at KTAL. With all the technical problems, blown breaks, blown spots, sub-standard signal, etc.; does anyone really do anything over there?
On-air is a mess and I can't imagine what it's like inside the building.
Nexstar must really not care much.

At 9:54 AM, February 03, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No they don't care. If they did we would not be having this discussion. Even though the building is in much better condition then it used to be, it is still a pit.

At 4:26 PM, February 11, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

As someone appropriately stated on a different thread: The only appearance Nexstar corporate is concerned with is how the balance sheet looks and little else.

I stumbled across KTAL by accident and actually watched about 2 minutes worth. MeeShell ran long on her reads as usual and they abruptly cut to a commercial. KTAL... when will you catch on?

At 10:23 PM, February 15, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Managment shake up at KTAL, GM who hired MeeShell got fired. Wonder how this may affect her anchor gig?
