Jenna wasn't bad considering the crappy station she worked for. I wish her well in her new endeavour.

Oh no, not Jenna! Jenna and Patrick actually make the morning show fun. I bet you a Dr. Pepper and some Cheesy Poofs out of the vending machine she is leaving because her husband is being transferred from Barksdale to a base in Virgina.

Good luck Jenna!!!!!

Move to Mee Shell to mornings. I don't watch then! Let Nick solo the 5, 6, and 10!

Mee Shell in the Mornings?!! Oh gawd that's not even funny. I can't mute the sound fast enough when they run a promo of her during primetime.

Michelle is horrible at her job. Example of her news reading: "There wasss an acCIDent on interstate 20!!! Howevvvvver, no one was injiredddd.…thankfuLLLY."

Jenna is a good anchor, they should have considered her for main anchor at KTBS. Patrick is overwhelming in the mornings so I can't watch them.

At 10:42 AM, November 18, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think Mee Shell got her job because of her association with Ivan Smith Furniture as they advertise a lot on KTAL. Remember they were still running ads with her at the same time she was anchoring the news. Talk about lost credibility. It would make one ask "What was KTAL management thinking?" But if you stop and consider the above, it makes it easy to figure out.

At 12:48 PM, November 18, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh please! Here we go again. Another thread about something going on at KTAL that has yet again turned into a Michelle bashing.

Fact: Michelle was doing those Ivan Smith commercials for two or three years before she ever got this current anchor job. Those same Ivan Smith commercials she was in aired on all six local stations. And don't forget her old KSLA co-worker Bob Griffin. He was also doing those Ivan Smith commercials at the same time while he was still on air at KSLA. Ivan Smith would rotate their traffic so both Michelle and Bob's commercials aired daily.

Fact: If you are looking for someone to thank/blame for hiring Michelle, that would be Mark. It is all his doing. Willie, the ND at the time, was not included in Michelle's interview and hiring process and did not know anything about it until Michelle had already been hired.

8:22 AM "Patrick is overwhelming in the mornings so I can't watch them." Are you nuts? At least he is awake and funny in the morning. The morning Mets on 3 and 12 are boring as hell.

At 1:52 PM, November 18, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

FACT: Mark is real tight with Ivan Smith.

At 1:54 PM, November 18, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

FACT: Bob Griffin was fired from KSLA and one hiring condition at KTBS was that he could no longer do Ivan Smith commercials.

F___ Michelle and Ivan Smith! This thread is about Jenna, not them.

...this turned into a place for people to complain about mee-shell? Shouldn't we be focusing on the chance that ktal may get an anchor who is actually genuine and not the creature with the happy mask that they have every morning now? Come on people! Stay on topic!

I am sorry to hear Jenna is leaving. Being a military wife she will have to get use to moving every two to three years. Good luck to you Jenna!

Okay... Jenna is leaving. Whoop-dee-doo! I never cared for her delivery as it reminded me of small-town radio announcing...too forced and unnatural. Good luck to her but honestly I never cared for her. Patrick Dennis may be a nice guy but his vocal delivery reminds me of whiny-chainsaw. Who picks these people at KTAL? Are they deaf? Nic at 6 has a pleasant delivery but I can't watch him with Mizz Ovurrrrr-EEEEnuuUUUN-CIatTION!
My jaws hurt just listening & watching her overarticulate.
Oh...I forgot, can't stray from the topic...uh ..wait a minute... why the hell not? It's all mixed together, Jenna leaving KTAL..leads to other issues at KTAL...leads to even more opinions. If you don't like the info, hey do what the TV folks say: turn the channel or don't read the link.

You do have two other stations you can watch so fuck off.

It's just angry bitter KTAL employees who are mad because noone watches them.

Ah and there it is! What you lack in wit you more than make up for by being coarse. Hope you feel better now. FWIW, I like some NBC programming, especially network news. But when the local comes on after, I do watch other channels (which is a big duh..but thanks for reminding me!)

At 10:18 AM, November 21, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes, as a matter of fact I do feel much better about myself. My co-workers and I do not care if you like our news or not. We still get paid whether you watch our news or not.

What I find funny...Sure is a lot of chat about a station that apparently no one watches!!! (I don't work at TV stations, I'm just a viewer)

Jenna was good at delivering the news. It is nice to watch someone that you can understand! She should have been promoted to main anchor. Some one said "overarticulate"...how does she do this? She is pronouncing words, the way that they are supposed to be said! As least she is not drraagggging on like some otherrr pppeeoppplllle, which leads me to...

Look out for the BLOG POLICE because I'm about to get of topic...Michelle is HORRIBLE! She was hired and is up front because the management at KTAL felt that she had a good reputation in the community and would bring viewership. This is the same reason that they hired Patrick Dennis! (btw, he is good and it worked in his case). They are wrong and mislead for thinking this about Michelle! People know her name, who she is and that's it! I try to watch but when she is on, I change it as soon as I get enough energy to reach out for the remote. I think they need to drug test her once a week...or get rid of her and put someone better at the desk. I'm willing to bet that there's at least half a dozen people in the newsroom that could do a better job!!!

You got that right Know It All. Just be grateful you don't have to work with Michelle. At least you can change the channel. We have to sit here, grid out teeth, and listen to every word she butchers.

Well 10:18 it sure does show! BTW..you & your co-workers might want to rethink that attitude. Cuz unless you start an uptick in your ratings, (which BTW I do have a Nielsen to fill out) you may wind up being further underpaid when they start cutting budgets and not rehiring folks who leave for better things.
I know folks who got laid off at other stations and after they checked on jobs at 6, they said they'd do better at Papa Johns.

BTW 10:18,...ya think your bosses at NEXSTAR would like to learn of your attitude? They read blogs too , ya know and even if you're anonymous, there's only so many people in the building. (Yeah... I know your what your classy response will probably be so no need to waste your time.)

Good luck with that attitude 10:18.

Here is the reality 1:29. Nexstar Broadcasting does not subscribe to Nielsen Ratings so we officially do not care about them.

KTAL is, and always has been, the lowest paying station in this market. Even my counterpart at little KMSS makes more money then I do.

We have known since 2008 the execs in Irving do in fact read this blog, but they never act on anything that is posted on here.

So you know some folks who were laid off from other stations do ya? So do we. We know how many people have been laid off at each station over the past few years, and KTBS wins the lay off game. They have laid off more employees from KTBS/KPXJ then KTAL, KSLA, and KMSS/KSHV combined.

Well good for you, it must be great to come to work unencumbered by worrying about ratings. But while you and your local staff may not care about the ratings, I can assure national & regional spot buyers do as they use GRPs/Qtrly Hrs and Cumes when they look at a given market. You may not care about ratings but I betcha you have a ND who does and a GM or NSM who does And you can bet your CEO in Irving does too.

Call me crazy but if I were sitting in the exec offices in Irving, I'd take note of the KTAL office culture I'd glean from these remarks. But then again, what do I know?

Ya'll have a great Thanksgiving.

Dude, just give it up. They have said they don't care, and no mater how many times you keep beating this dead horse, nothing you say is going to change their mind.

If Nexstar didn't like whats going at KTAL they would have already done something about it. Since they haven't done anything it's obvious Nexstar is happy with the way things are being run over there.

At 12:47 PM, November 25, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Dude? Maybe you should say dudette? Funny how people always seem to think only guys post here. As for Nexstar not caring. Don't be so sure about that. 2012 is going to be a telling year as there's all sorts of discussions going on in Suite 1400.
The rank & file may not care but I can guarantee you there more than a few jobs (and compensations) that are very much tied in with ratings. Corporate may appear indifferent but trust me, they take and keep notes.

At 1:57 PM, November 26, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So do they plan on firing Mark and promoting Mike to GM or what? KTAL's had five news directors and six main anchors in six years but none of those changes have helped their ratings.

What about the company? Is Nexstar still for sell? Nothings been said about it since that was first announced back in July. There are three less departments and twelve less employees at KTAL so who got that extra money in their bonus?

At 8:46 AM, November 29, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I bet they do make Mike GM. He's been acting likes he's running the place for a while now. Makes us wonder why Mark is still around. I'm sure my department will be next to go. Oh well, I can always go wrap burritos for more money then I's making here right now.

At 10:46 AM, December 01, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's going to happen so you better get ready for it now. From what I keep hearing Mike is as big a control freak as Blake Russell, and is being allowed to run things like Blake use too. When Blake was there he had his hands in every department and would over rule those managers all the time. Nexstar knew it didn't work then, and it sure isn't working now.

At 11:16 AM, December 02, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So when is Jenna's last day, and have they already picked her replacement yet? I hope they bring someone new in or get someone like Shannon Slatton or Shelly Briery back on the morning show.

At 11:32 AM, December 02, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Where does KTAL post station job openings? I hardly ever see any posted on the web page, and I never see them post job openings on the Nexstar web site. None of the other stations hide their job openings like this.

At 11:01 AM, December 05, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

FYI: Blake Russell is now at corporate as Sr. VP - Station Ops.

At 3:42 PM, December 05, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah we know. Blake was promoted twice after he and his controlling ways left KTAL. First to VP & GM in Fayetteville then on to his current VP of Station Operations at corporate in Irving.

KTAL has always been very lax when it comes to job postings. Usually we post jobs on the bulletin board in the break room. We never post of the company web site, but we do sometimes post jobs on our home page.

At 5:22 PM, December 06, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So why do they like Blake so much at corporate? Does he save them money or does he have enough BS to float a battleship?

At 7:16 PM, December 06, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Like most execs the BS level to advance with Nexstar is very high. In Blake's case its 60% BS and 40% money saving.

At 11:08 AM, December 07, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Speaking of BS, why isn't KTAL selling out it's inventory in Sunday Night Football? I saw a 30 second promo run during the Saints game Sunday night.

i'm on Jenna's FB page and she is in WSLS 10. i've also seen job listings for KTAL at BPCC..just saying..oh! and the new girl in the morning is kinda cute. Leslie?

At 1:48 PM, December 08, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I work at another Nexstar station and we do not operate like that. My station always posts job openings on our web page and on the Nexstar web site. What's going on there? KTAL doesn't seen to operate like other Nexstar stations.

At 7:36 PM, December 09, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KTAL's always been 5th place in a 4 station market. If we included Longview-Tyler it would be 12th place. I don't know why they just don't quit and run infomercials 24/7.

At 1:42 PM, December 10, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No matter how f___ed up KTAL is, it is 100% better then KMSS. KMSS/KSHV run more paid programs and church shows then KTBS/KPXJ, KTAL, and KSLA combined. Paula would never get away with half the stuff she does if she were at a Nexstar owned station.

At 5:55 PM, December 10, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

By doing that, KMSS probably gets a greater ROI than KTAL. I think that was the point of the previous poster.

At 11:31 PM, December 10, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That may be true but no one takes KMSS seriously much less considers them competition. They do not have a news department and that canned news they get from their sister station in Tyler is embarrassing.

At 12:32 PM, December 13, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KMSS doesn't care if anyone takes them seriously for news or not. All KMSS cares about is how much advertising they sell or not. I can tell you first-hand that aside from keeping the lights on and the transmitter working, very little money is put in the place and will continue to be that way. KMSS/KSHV have been for sale for years and no one wants to pony up the asking price because the Asking Price to Ad Sales ratio is too high. They got slapped by Gannett for sourcing newspaper articles a couple years back...that shows you how serious their news efforts are.
Their parent company was founded by a bunch of former radio rednecks in Lafayette who bought crappy, floundering TV stations and formed a group thinking they could run TV like a low-rent radio group; that's the corporate culture. All their stations pretty much suck but as long as the balance sheets show profits, that's all that matters.

At 10:48 PM, December 13, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I have to agree with you on the company not spending any money on anything. Comm Corp and White Knight are bankrupt company's that should have gone under years ago, or at least been hit with a huge fine by the state of Louisiana for lying that they were a Texas company based out of Beaumont when the actual home office has always been in Lafayette.

Nexstar has attempted to buy KMSS three times over the past 11 years. They were originally going to buy the station back in 2000, but the negotiations did not go any where so they bought KTAL instead. The third attempt to buy KMSS fell apart this summer when FOX sabotaged the deal. Nexstar was going to buy KMSS and move operations over to KTAL and send the business office, traffic, and master control to Little Rock. KSHV would be on it's on.

At 1:46 PM, December 14, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh really? So that's what happened? I had heard something about it but didn't know any of these details. Considering all the problems they have at KTAL why is Nexstar still trying to buy other stations? They should use that money and fix the sorry stations they already own.

At 7:43 PM, December 14, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nexstar is leveraged and works simply on cash-flow. They borrow heavily and are upside-down. They shuffle through stations they either own or have an LMA and are simply riding the cashflow from national / regional ad sales. That's all their concerned with. You watch, in a couple years they'll sell out a chunk and probably declare insolvency on what's left but by that time the top execs will have gotten their sugar and move out.

At 8:11 PM, December 14, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So what's the latest on Nexstar being for sell? It was announced back in July the week after they laid off master control, but nothing's been said about it since then.

At 11:27 AM, December 19, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

A large portion of Nexstar's subordinate debt is held by a private equity investment group called Arby Group. Arby buys/sells interests in communications companies. They would be first in line to get their cut in any sale. Nexstar isn't showing any profit because they have a lot of subordinate debt to manage to folks like Arby Group. The asking price for the whole Nexstar group could be close to $1 billion dollars based on recent Wall Street Journal articles. I don't think that will happen anytime soon as there's too much uncertainty in the market. Maybe a year after the presidential election. For a quick(er) sale, Nexstar would have to offer some discount or clever packaging. That probably won't happen soon either unless their stock price starts to tank.

At 1:15 PM, December 19, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

er..don't you mean Abry Group? You must've been thinking about lunch.
