Damn,

Gerry May will be there. What else could he do? The only ones who do stay are the ones who can't do anything else.

Congratulations Sonja, I am thrilled for you, and I welcome you to the Former KTBS Employees Association. Take it from me, life is so much better being away from there. I was talking with one of our former co-workers last weekend and she told me there enough of us former KTBS employees who were either laid off, quit, or fired over the past four years to fully staff a station of our own.

Fletch is a hoot! Let's see what could Fletch do outside of TV?
Sell cars? Manage a Taco Bell?
DJ at a strip club? (That's sort of like working a TV Sportsdesk....let's give it up for Tiffani !! Show the love!!)

Hey Former KTBS'er could start a Facebook page of folks who've been canned, left or found life outside of the madness that is KTBS. You could sell Tee shirts that read: "I worked at KTBS and all I got was this stupid St. Jude's Tee Shirt" emblazoned with sponsor-pkg logos.

Sonja,

Thank you for the job that you have done over the years. I enjoyed waking up to you and Ed. I wish you much success in your new venture. You will be missed.

Good for you Sonja. I am happy for you, but sad for me. Your leaving is yet another reason why I'm not watching the morning show any more.

Now that Sonja is leaving that only leaves Ed, Jerry, Joe, and Fletch with any seniority. I wonder when they will be leaving too? How Jan has lasted as long as she has is beyond me.

Goodbye and good luck.

Anyone wondering how or why people last so long at KTBS? Plain & simple truth is people can stay at KTBS as long as they:
A. Want to
B. Don't want or ask for too much money
C. Aren't overly-ambitious
and
D. Are willing to accept more work for less money

I know folks who've worked there and they've told me as much. The Wrays don't like change too much and if you show too much interest in furthering your career, you'll not be favored. Fact is that whenever on-air talent's salary starts reaching a certain threshold, they'll find a reason to kick you to the curb or make you want to leave. Jan's appeal is that she came to work at KTBS for free at first and that ingratiated her to the Wrays. She was a lousy ND but was forced to take the job and after she got dismissed from it, they kept her on in community affairs because the Wrays like her.
She stayed at KTBS because of the above 4 points.

Think about it....most of the long-term folks who got let go or forced out didn't wind up going to better TV jobs, they became PR flacks in town. The better, more ambitious people saw the writing on the wall early and left knowing it was a black-hole.
Shrevespit is pretty mediocre TV newswise. But it is a world unto itself. If you're not used to anything else, how could you tell the diff?

You are correct, they never designed a set for TV before. Up close it looks really cheap.
About the red, one day Randy the news director was out there putting red gels on the lights because it wasn't red enough.

At 5:12 PM, October 31, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KTBS is a kooky place. Their last mega-news set was designed by some computer dork who knew nothing about TV design either. Remember the big TV's with the lower 3rds logo burns? The set looked like Stonehenge but you only saw it in it's entirety for 3 seconds when they bumped out of commercial. Now they got a TV set out-of-a-box. Guess it must've been a cheap-O quote or their consultant is color-blind. Mega-dumb idea.

At 9:01 PM, November 01, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Speaking of megadumb ideas, has anyone heard the new KTBS Jingle they've been running for sweeps?
Sounds like it was composed in the 1980's. Mega-dorky sounding.

At 9:17 PM, November 01, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Good luck on your new career Sonja. I will miss you.

Yes, I agree with you on the set. I thought when they brought in the red and gold last year it was just for the Christmas holidays. Then I saw a post on here the red and gold graphics were not just for the holidays. Another post on here said those are the graphics they settled on because they wanted to use the exact same graphics KTAL had just gotten, but the company refused to sell them to another station in the same market. Never thought I would ever see the day where they try to copy KTAL for anything.

KTBS has been getting rid of people all over the building for decades. I witnessed it first hand. I don't know if it has changed in the years since i was laid off, but they use to get rid of traffic manager once they hit the 10 year mark. Other departments were not safe either. Well that did not apply to the ghost employees who was a member of "the family."

Can't say I've seen this on other local stations but KTBS is now airing tv spots for the Wild Orchid Strip Club during their 6pm news. I guess that's just another way of them saying: "We're On Your Side".
Wonder if that's a cash/barter trade deal for KTBS management?

At 8:25 PM, November 02, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh really? That's interesting. Wild Orchid and Action Central use to advertise a lot over on KMSS and KSHV. Action Central also use to advertise on KTAL daily between 11:00pm and 4:00am. That was when Dan Bates and Scott Thomas were the GM's, and before Stan Stava quit and took them, and most of his other advertisers with him. For the last couple of years the only time I saw spots for Action Central was around New Years, and the Super Bowl.

At 8:05 AM, November 03, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The KTBS jingle was composed in the '80's in an attempt to bolster the station's community involement image. The producers of this jingle were hired by the station's image consultants, AR&D
out of Dallas--then one of the
"big dog" consultants in TV news. The consensus among news employees at the time was that the song sounded goofy--and the theme "On Your Side" really didn't make much sense as the news media (back in the day) were supposed to be objective and not take sides. The theme was also used to promote the then very effective Call 3 consumer hotline that produced great stories that often took goverment, business and crooked merchants to the woodshed. "On your side" didn't make a whole lot of sense then, and 30 years later, it really doesn't make much sense especially with the deactivation of the Call 3 investigative team.

At 10:02 AM, November 03, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So it's come to this at KTBS, reusing old branding jingle packages? It does sound goofy and dated. But then again this is Shreveport so maybe it'll fly.

At 11:21 AM, November 03, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think the jingle was done by the same dude that does the "real men of genius" Bud Light commercials......

At 11:59 AM, November 04, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Good one. Here's to you Mr. 1980's jingle writer. Yeah I remember when they started using that goofy jingle. It's always been a joke. Now the only side KTBS is on is the George is desperate to keep his job side.

Call 3 was a fantastic success in it's day. You can thank Andy and Wanda Pontz for that. Andy was the news director, and his wife Wanda ran it. Several years after George fired them form KTBS they recreated the same program during the short time they worked at KTAL calling it The Troubleshooter hotline. During the short time Troubleshooter was running it became just as successful as Call 3. In their brilliance, Nexstar fired Andy and killed Troubleshooter. But what do you expect from a station that has five news directors in six years.

Curious to see who will be the next to go. Ed, Jerry, Joe, maybe Fletch?

At 2:42 PM, November 04, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

My guess is whoever is making too much money (as far as George is concerned). Of course new mom Chrissi may decide the stress isn't worth it and decide that being a fulltime mom is a better idea.
At the end of the day, the only thing keeping folks at KTBS is either their ego or their love of stress & negativity. Or they just don't have anything better to go to. Of course the secret is to get the heck out of the building and stay in the field as long as you can. That helps.

At 8:50 PM, November 04, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

"Action Central also use to advertise on KTAL daily between 11:00pm and 4:00am. That was when Dan Bates and Scott Thomas were the GM's,.."

Dan Bates, now there's blast from the past. He was GM at KSLA after Viacom bought it. Had permed hair back then and staff called him Curly-haired A##hole. Rumored to have an affinity for Bolivian Marching Powder and a certain Anchor-blonde. Got fired from KSLA and was escorted from the bldg. under armed guard. Some pal he hired in sales at the time had warrants on him. I remember the day the deputies came to the station and he beat a trail out the back door.

At 10:35 PM, November 04, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That rep had no effect on him. Dan Bates was the GM at KTAL for years, and when he quit Nexstar he went to work for Rupert Murdock as head of NewsCorp's Rumania TV network.

I see KTBS is trying to squeeze every penny they can out of primetime. They piggybacked a 60 second break to the end of 20/20 to air a 30 second General Mills spot and two 15 second promos.

I think 2:42 has it right. Now I can see Chrissi using the new mom card to get out. That's what three or four women did over at KTAL while Willie was ND. Just go on maternity leave and not come back. Knowing their situation I would have done the exact same thing.

Who knows. Since there is nothing going on up there I doubt it will be "The Ding Bong Daddy from Dumas."

Can't speak for all that's been posted by others here but I do know that after Bates came to KSLA, there was a lot of funny business going on. One of the new Viacom staffers he brought in sales got popped for receiving cocaine via FedEx packages. The Feds showed up one day and led her out the door in cuffs. True story.

They pay very little at KTBS. The folks still on air there can't do anything else. From the anchors to the reporters. What else could they do? It is really sad, it was such a great station a few years ago.

Only thing about working in education this late in the career game is the Social Security Offset Pension. She may want to look at that again 'cuz starting late in education penalizes your SS pay. Unless she plans on working there 20 years.

About the comment about school system retirement, non-teachers are covered by whatever retirement system the school system offers. You could be an administrator, para-professional, bus driver, janitor, etc. and have to choose one of the school system retirement options to which affects your Social Security retirement benefits. I know because I worked for a school system as a non-teacher.

At 12:45 PM, November 17, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The previous comment is correct. Something else you can do with the school board retirement is if you are a few years short or if you want to retire early you can do like my ex-aunt did and have your next husband buy the years you need to go ahead and retire with a full retirement.

PR for School Board. There's a fun-job. Talk about politics and backstabbers. Some folks there get a little taste of power and it's kiss-my-butt central!

At 10:00 PM, November 20, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I use to live in a big city and while Sonja I'm sure was nice was very boring and dressed like an old lady. Ive met chrissi and she's about as bright as my coffee table. These people could never make it in a big city. TV news isn't what it use to be. Who cares anymore? Everyone who posts here is either a news person or was laid off. Leave Mayer alone. He's much better than that twit Chrissi or that tool Ed. Definitely small town talent.

At 1:14 PM, November 21, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You must be dating Mayer to think he has talent. He looks like an octypus with his arms and hands flailing all over the place. And sorry, but he is no Prince Charming to look at either. Chrissie and Ed are significantly better qualified than he is!!

I think Steve is just inexperienced and isn't too comfortable in his own skin. Steve if you're reading this, do some workshops or something...your face is frozen and don't just rely on eyebrow movement either. Sorry dude, just calling it like I see it.

Whomever the consultant is with these hand gestures needs to be taken out and group-bitch slapped with his hand gesturing advice. This feels/looks forced and contrived. Body language is something that comes from the core and not on script. It's like the difference between bad community theater and Broadway.

Ya know, folks either break out from bad habits or lock them in. You may be working at a place for 10+ years but unless you improve you wind up with 1 years worth of experience 10 times.

Good luck guys!

At 12:09 AM, November 22, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@1:41, Do you really think KTBS has a consultant? Maybe a consultant from KTAL.

At 10:57 AM, November 22, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You make some very good points. If there were a consultant who suggested using hand gestures, he/she should be fired immediately. Gerry May uses them quite a bit also. It just makes the entire newscast look so unprofessional.

You people are so small market. Hand gestures
concern you? Really? Out of all the shit on tv

Unbelievable. AND...yoi think Mayer is bad which he's
not...just young. And you think Chrissi and
Ed aren't the perfect actors for the next Dumb

you'll never go anywhere. But hey...at least ya
got something.

F'in hand gestures? I can't believe that's an argument! U people are ridiculous.
Btw...not dating him. But nice try. I'm a producer in Dallas but from Shreveport. I get back often tho..and we know talent here. Hand gestures? I'm still laughing.

At 1:27 PM, November 22, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Unfortunately what some of you have a difficult time understanding is television news is all about perception, not intelligence. Sneer and say what you want, but MOST television anchors who are seen in a positive light, do not utilize their hands as if they are having an epileptic seizure. I'm a producer in Houston but still have ties to the Ark-La-Tex. You want Mayer in Dallas? Go ahead, take him.

At 3:53 PM, November 22, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sure you are and that's why you care about hand gestures.
Because you're obviously not worried about producing
a show. How about focusing on your sucky leads that anchors... who make hand gestures... have to read?! Still
laughing about you guys caring about this...

At 8:11 AM, November 23, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm not in television but just a local viewer. For me personally, when I watch the news, I want to be informed, not entertained. The hand gestures, regardless of them coming from a seasoned reporter or an inexperienced reporter, are very, very distracting. I read in an earlier post that perhaps a consultant is advising this? Generally speaking, kids do not watch the news, so it would behoove the local television channels to have reporters to "just give the news" without all the theatrics.

At 11:14 AM, November 23, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well not that it means anything but I work on the Left-Coast and used to work in Shrevesburg. When I come back and visit family I have to say I too am distracted with the hand gesturing on 3. It just feels / looks weird sometimes. The pairing of the two guys anchoring the news feels off too. The younger guy does ok but as someone posted earlier, he probably just needs more experience and a maybe some good talent coaching too.

At 1:05 PM, November 23, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

steven mayer looks like a big turd anchoring the news!

At 2:57 PM, November 23, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well, I don't think we have to get that personal, but Mayer definitely does not look or sound like an anchor. He might be okay for the weekend but like someone else wrote, news presentation is about appearance and perception, which he does not seem to have.

At 9:27 PM, November 23, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

exactly u idiot, thats why i said he looks like a giant terd.his appearance and perception is crap duh. god people are dumb
