HD Newscasts Arrive in LR...Finally

THV, Channel 11 debuted its new HD set and technology at its 10pm newscast. Even the regular news anchors were on hand to anchor the newscast. Will attempt to get a pic of the new set ...it's blue. How much more fake can a backdrop of the city of Little Rock look though! Does HD really matter? Movies look good in HD but is newscasts in HD a waste of money?

Yes of course they were. The regular anchors aren't going to let some weekend anchors have all the glory of being the first talking head news readers to debut HD in LR.

On the street will be SD so what's the big deal?

Congrats on Today's Thv for being able to get on the air 1st w/HD.Yes the fake backdrop sucks bigtime, but overall the broadcast was flawless. Now let's see how long it takes 7 & the others to catch up.KATV long ago lost bragging rights to being # 1 once Gannett start Pumping money into KTHV (11)....

Gannett and "pumping money" is like "jumbo shrimp."

Not exactly pumping money into any salaries of the working class or I should say non-on-camera people.

Not impressed very much. Will be quickly outdone from set to talent.

Time will tell.

The KTHV set is nice and bright.

Yeah, the backdrop will be a sore spot for some viewers.

The newscast looked good.

Great that they had a full staff.

Yes, they will have bragging rights, being the first in HD, but when the others catch up (sooner than later) the race will continue like it was when there wasn't HD.

I expect because KARK wasn't first like they predicted, they will stay last and the competition will remail between 7 and 11.

(Opinion Here) Being first would have been the only way KARK could taste being number 1.

Now that 7 has seen 11s new set, I hope they will come up with something nicer!

Does anyone else hate KATVs current digs? and where they randomly place their reporters throughout the station with a giant 7 behind them.

What gets me is how everyone was freaking out on the previous blog about all the anchors and reporters hair and how they needed short cuts.

No one looked bad with longer hair, everyone looked like themselves.

Nice going 11, it is good to be first with anything. However, doing news in HD and even being the first to do it has NEVER increased ratings in ANY metered market. Right now viewers don't care. Now, in 5 years... That may be a different story.

At 3:00 PM, December 20, 2010, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I do like the new set and everyone did a nice job on the first broadcast. I would rather have seen an HD photo of the skyline instead of a painted orange effect. However, its not the set that makes the news, its the professionalism and honest hard news that we want to see, and that's what the viewers will eventually turn to.

Set looked great and all the anchors were in top form. Congratulations to all who made this happen.

I am giving THV a chance because they're HD.

Can someone tell me why Ayana Cristal mispronounces words throughout her segments.

It is painful and obvious, especially for those of us who know sports.

I hate when a woman gets a sports gig only to prove why the business is dominated by men.

My friend busted out laughing and made me watch a recording this week.

Twice, that we caught, we heard her say one name and then saw it spelled slightly different on the jersey.

Don't get me started on her mumbling through the plays.

I don't know how long she has been there, but to see her on the 10 p.m. newscast makes me think someone thinks she is a big deal. Someone who doesn't know about sports.

At 9:25 AM, December 21, 2010, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I am an avid THV watcher and I have to change the channel when Ayana is doing sports. I don't have a problem with a woman sports reporter, I do when they don't know sports. Please get her some training or replace her.

Everything should be in HD. This is not 1950 anymore. People don't want to spend big bucks for a nice HD set and watch their local news in the standards that were set up in the 1940's.

Get real.

I think thv management is trying to prove to everyone that it doesn't matter who they put on the air... ratings will still be fine.

They aren't working in the best interest of the viewer.

So if you don't like Aiyana... complain to the news director!

At 10:24 PM, December 22, 2010, Anonymous Anonymous said...

All Today's THV cares about is the branding and that's their anchors.

Everything else is just whatever to keep the wheel turning.

Maybe it's not Aiyana Cristals fault that she is bad.

Perhaps she needed to go to a smaller market for practice, but why go if Today's THV will hire you.

Many times when you apply for a job, they will tell you to apply again after you get more experience (THV obviously doesn't have a check list of what to look for)

Watch, I am sure everyone they hire from now on is going to be JUST EXPERIENCED ENOUGH not to COMPLETELY embarrass Today's THV. One day they will learn, maybe after they get sued for false or no fact checking/ research.

It does take experience.

I heard someone joke about it, but it's true-- someone needs to put some serious anti-shine on Craig's cranium.

watched tonight-- they all looked ticked at each other. Maybe they got the ratings in.

Craig is holding it all in on the news--stiff and serious-- and then he has these goofy commercials doing the news. Who decides this stuff?

And please, the Aiyana woman is mighty cute, but she needs some serious--make the serious--coaching.

At 10:39 PM, December 22, 2010, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah... how can they say they're number on at ten? The ratings today showed they got their clocks cleaned.

Will someone please post the ratings.

At 3:55 PM, December 23, 2010, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'll bet their ratings are better than 7's, just because their playback servers don't stutter with almost every story aired.

At 4:02 PM, December 23, 2010, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Good point--although I notice with 11's HD, the audio and picture don't sync sometimes-- just like 7.

Is it just me or does almost every newscast or segment on Channel seven in the morning have a miscue, missing audio or some other major problem. How hard can it be?

Seven is turning into what 11 was technologically in the 80's-- couldn't syc coming out of network.

'Course, the difference is seven is leading in the ratings.

Nothing solid, but heard at ten that Seven had a 12 and Channel 11 had a 9. Don't take that to the bank, though.

KTHV's set and "backdrop" is a dismal failure. Should have have gone with an aerial photo of LR during the day and the same view at night. I am no art director, but good Lord it's awful

Craig will never be taken seriously due to trying to be funny on some promos. When was the last time you saw a network anchor acting goofy to get viewers?

At 8:33 PM, December 23, 2010, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Craig's not acting goofy to get viewers, he's acting that way because that's who he is. Does no one remember his time on radio? Even his stuff in sports had the goofy element to it.

It was a major mistake to move him to the anchor desk -- he should have at least been given a period of just doing the community journalism / Hero Central type stuff first to help transition him into a more serious face for the station.

At 10:59 PM, December 23, 2010, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree. It is not Craig's fault that management at KTHV is trying to get all they can out of a person who is at the height of a mediocre career.

They should have allowed at least a two year period between doing the sports and being an anchor to give the public a chance to take him seriously. He should quit doing the goofy promos if he wants to be believed.

Just saying.

"Is it just me or does almost every newscast or segment on Channel seven in the morning have a miscue, missing audio or some other major problem. How hard can it be?"

It's what happens when you run off good employees and buy cheap equipment that's not up to the challenge. You end up with a low budget product produced by amateurs that leaves the audience looking elsewhere.

At 12:12 AM, December 24, 2010, Anonymous Anonymous said...

they're obviously not looking elsewhere if they are watching 7 more than 11 -- according to ratings.

11's backdrop is a "dismal failure?"

Have you seen channel seven? It's not even a set, it's just a yellow wall.

At least 11 has depth in their shots... and the backdrop is growing on me.

At 1:14 AM, December 24, 2010, Anonymous Anonymous said...

11 recently tried to hire a young good looking male anchor from another part of the state. I was aware of the dealings up until they fell through.

After seeing Craig in HD I am guessing management will try something similar in the months or years ahead. Since I work for another LR station, I hope they keep the same lineup for a long time. Keeping Craig on the desk is good for business for all 3 competitors.

At 8:40 AM, December 24, 2010, Anonymous Anonymous said...

As far as the ratings are concerned... 7 won all major categories in November. AM, 5pm, 6pm and 10pm. KARK had a few his and misses, however 11 lost in ALL. Larry is probabaly going to balme everyone but himself - as usual.

I guess you are right. I can remember when the local stations had staff artists and directors (not news directors) that could design sets that were attractive and eye catching. Not anymore. I guess that is another part of broadcast that management has phased out.

Yeah, looks like THV had some low ratings this book. More to come unless some changes are made. But, don't look for any changes just yet from Larry.

I just loved it when Ayana called Craig "Cwaig."

Keep the ones you have, Larry. We're lovin' it.

How does 7 do it? Their talent is pretty good, but the rest of what they have and do just suck. Whoever rolls breaks in the morning needs to pay more attention-they sit in black too long after a break. And WHAT pray tell is going on in the morning on the weekend? Are they asleep at the wheel up there? The news set is total crap! I cannot believe that that's the best they can do. When are they ever gonna do something with that tired ole daystank set? Hey katv if u need money u can always lay off more ppl and cut pay and get rid of useless chiefs in the newsroom who can spell illinois because he used to live there! Then u can actually invest in ur product so may e you won't lose anymore potential clients who take one look at ur busted building then go spend their dollars elsewhere ;)

I bet ole Pard could fix it. What happened to him?

Is Ned Perme learning any new Christmas songs? That is the key, no other station has a weather man or even an anchor that they can identify with. Perme has got to be the person with the most years in LR television.

Still wondering how his face is tanned and his hands aren't. Kinda reminds me of Bonner.

At 8:12 AM, December 25, 2010, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sorry, but the THV backdrop looks nice enough but, let me guess, they had an employee do it. That station is so cheap yet making so much money...

The desk and lighting look decent except for the shadows on Craig--they've always lit the women better than the males-- but the backdrop is a bit amateurish.

At 7:56 PM, December 25, 2010, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The backdrop is amateurish. Whomever "designed" it apparently has had very little art training. The exact discipline that the person is trained in is questionable. Oh well, let's see what the other stations come up with for their HD debut. Personally, if your on-air talent does not have the looks, HD will not be flattering. NO tight shots, please.

Hey guys, could someone turn the resolution down on my camera?

Seems to me that ole pard just hangs around for the insurance and what else is he gonna do anyway? If he retires he won't be important anymore! So, uh... since thv ratings suck, are the other stations going to capitalize on that for February?

If everyone else goes HD by then, it will level the playing field. That is, if people care about watching HD, which I do.

You know, I find that if TV sucks, it doesn't matter if it's HD or not. It doesn't improve bad product.

At 10:26 PM, December 26, 2010, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Shots of anchors are too wide for an HD format. Too much vacant space on each side. Shots should be much tighter to reduce the wasted space. Case in point. Watch NBC Nightly News, CBS News, ABC News at 5:30 p.m. and see the difference.

Again, need to stock up on makeup and hire someone who knows how to apply it. That is when you will see the difference in stations with their news shows . . . and let's face it . . . they are just shows to sell ads and make some money. Nothing more, nothing less.

At 11:07 PM, December 26, 2010, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, there's not much of a point to just having the anchors in hd, when the rest of the news isn't. I don't care how the anchors look, I want to see a news pkg in hd.

At 12:59 AM, December 27, 2010, Anonymous Anonymous said...

news packages in HD means $$$

it means HD cameras in the field and changing out ever computer/editing software for HD. You need a heck of a lot computer memory

and a server that plays out in HD.

Like I said $$$$

At 8:40 AM, December 27, 2010, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I hope the other stations actually shoot everything in HD. That would be a huge draw for me to watch.

At 10:20 AM, December 27, 2010, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I am pretty sure Gannett has pumped all the money they are going to pump as far as HD is concerned here in River City at this time.

At least one of the other stations will debut in-the-field HD camera shots and that will blow THV out of the water. Nothing worse than going back and forth from HD to SD during a newscast.

Salespeople . . . hit the streets!

At 11:38 AM, December 27, 2010, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I still see the THV photographers out in the field shooting with the standard cameras.

The MMJ cameras have always been able to switch to HD, one of them said they don't have the capability to edit in HD. and when they did the weekly Amazed segment in HD it took about 2-days to get it edited and sent specially to air in HD.

Sounds to me like THV isn't going to be 100-percent HD for a long time.

Hope that's what is taking everyone else a while and they will truly be HD.

Anyone have the ratings?

At 4:26 PM, December 27, 2010, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I've been reading this blog about Craig acting the clown-- I've been watching THV a long time and there's one thing I notice that I wonder how you perceive it.

I have been in the news business a long time and while I have seen good natured promotion to let viewers know there is a "human" side of their news anchor, I have never seen another station--in this market or any other-- that lets its main anchor man be made fun of at almost every turn.

I'm watching right now and here's the promo where Ed says he has five seconds to talk about the new radar in HD. Here comes Craig in the background, hands in pockets, looking like the buffoon that Ed is trying to avoid because, well, he's goofy. Craig says something about how great HD is, and Ed says, "Uh-huh, sure it is."

I know this is supposed to make us feel they can all joke around with each other and a team that makes fun of each other likes each other and a team that likes each other deserves my attention.

I don't know about you, but no one else on this team is willing to look like the village idiot. Why is Craig willing to do so?

I've always thought this would catch up with them in the ratings--the repeated message that Craig is a class-clown. No where in the world does that work--if someone can show me a respected news organization that does this, I'll pay cash on the barrel.

If I was at the other stations, I would fear the power of THV's weather, because to this viewer it is the ONLY reason I watch.

At 5:07 PM, December 27, 2010, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I notice, too that Dawn and also Christina Munoz on Channel Seven are brow challenged. They regularly furrow their brow when it has nothing to do with what they're saying.

Scott Inman on the other hand, could be a robot for all we know except on the rare occasion when he smiles. You'll also notice that he's staring at something else when he wants us to believe he looking at Christina.

Four has issues of its own, like "real journalism!!" Unbelieveable...
This is why the market sucks.

And that is correct. You will NEVER see a network news anchor play the role of an idiot in a news promo.

Oh, and by the way, it's pronounced "news" not "nyews" and it's "Noon" instead of "Nyoon" as some local talking heads say. I guess they feel it's just sounds so proper. Listen to the pros on network folks. You can learn a lot from them.

From the looks of things I would say they are written in the studio as they are recorded. There could not be very much time being put into creating those things.

But enough about THV and their "technology." I am going to say that when all the stations have their HD "up and running" that KLRT will have the most impressive set.

KLRT was the first LR station to perfect switching between network HD and local SD and back to HD after the local breaks and not leave the second half of the football game being shown in SD.

KATV will be next, followed by KARK.

Finne is a hardworking diplomatic good guy and I think that he got the shaft from good ole katv. KARK actually saw more improvement than anyone. Im sure no one will write that. Just like no one ever mentions they are a strong number two at five and six now. To say there is a market leader is rediculous.

What's going to be a big stumbling block for KARK is their network. NBC has TERRIBLE ratings! I don't think they have a single show in the top 20 except for maybe Sunday Night Football. KARK may be growing at 5 and 6pm but I think they will struggle to grow at 10pm and even the mornings with such dismal prime.

I just wonder how much longer they are going to require the news anchor to remind us before each newscast that Jancy is on maternity leave. What difference does it make. It's like the anchor is making excuses for her not being there.

If you have regular viewers they already know that.

At 10:33 PM, December 31, 2010, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KTHV opted to use Stretch-O-Vision tonight with the tornado footage instead of using pillars with their SD camera.

Folks, it ain't HD unless the whole thing (sans commercials) is HD. So, THV, you got a ways to go before you can say you are the HD leader or even HD.

Talent looks good.

I know this is off topic but have you noticed how junky KARK, KATV, and KLRT's websites have become? KTHV's website is clear cut with not many ads. It appears to me by the number of ads on the other 3 stations website, they are needing money. I go online to get news, not to be sold ads while attempting to get news.

KTHV is definitely not the HD leader with their feeds coming from New Orleans. What are they using for cameras down there, hand-crank models? It is fairly evident that the THV (Technology Has Vanished) technology department is not spending any money on their "Sat" truck or equipment.

At 2:27 PM, January 04, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I hate it when TV stations get dial up quality internet video confused with 30fps broadcast quality. But you get that when management is too cheap to send a satellite truck to cover an important event. Even KATV wasn't that cheap!

Ah, the sat truck. Looks like they put all their eggs in one basket (studio HD) and left none for breakdowns. Poor technology management.

Yep, that's what I am calling it. From now on it's "Studio HD on Today's THV". Beyond that, nothing on their news show is HD.

Today's THV. First with Studio HD.

Today's THV will only be studio HD for months to a year.

With that said, will the other local stations come out stronger?

Will they have new HD cameras actually shooting in HD?

Will their Live truck be able to send the video back in HD.

Will they have HD editing software and be able to play it out on an HD server?

There is a lot that goes into FULL HD and that means $money$
