From Anchor...to the Sales Department.

A tipster says, Dale Nicholson III has "accepted" a job in sales at KATV. He's been replaced by some new sports reporter/weekend anchor that seems to do a very good job, and best of all, doesn't slouch.

Dale went to sales and asked for a job because like all the stations in this market, sales is more lucrative than even on-air positions and he has a family to feed.
The new weekend sports guy, Chris Kane, was their sports intern for 3 maybe 4 years and apparently impressed the right people during his time there. It will be interesting to see how he does.

He did very well tonight!

I thought he did a great job last night. Initially I was impressed with Kerri over at 4 when she started as sports director, then I realized she just read well off the prompter. Several times lately I've seen her try to go "off-script" to describe something that occured in a high school or college football game only to get the impression that she doesn't watch and understand as much football as a sports director should.
An example would be her comments over Hog highlights last week. On a long Razorback pass play for a touchdown she referred to a Hog making a great downfield block to free the receiver up as "making a great defensive play". Not to sound sexist as there are alot of great female sportscasters but she might be better off reading news.

Good luck with that.

I'm sorry to see that Dale isn't the weekend sports anchor, because I thought he did a pretty decent job, but Chris Kane does a good job. I met him recently at a high school football game that channel 7 was covering and he impressed me as being very professional. As far as Kerri from channel 4, I don't know how she got to be the sports director, because personally, she doesn't impress me as knowing that much about sports and the same goes with Aiyana Crystal over at channel 11. Hands down, Morgan Adsit of channel 16 kicks both of their asses as far as sports knowledge and deliveries of the stories.

Saw Kerri at KARK make that exact comment ("making a great defensive play") and I just cringed.
You're right, she doesn't do well when she ventures from the TelePromper.
Nothing exposes a female sports reporter as a fake more than awkward comments like that, which shows she doesn't know anything about the sport she's covering.
She needs to stick to the prepared text and leave the live comments to someone who knows the sport of football.
The new guy at Channel 7 shows real promise, in my opinion. Nice looking fella with a comfortable delivery and nice personality.
No doubt, though, Dale will make more money in sales. That weekend gig can't pay more than $30-$35,000 per year I wouldn't think.

Aiyana at THV is hands down the worst. Listen to her, what she says dayside she says nightside, and that is ad-libbing.

All her live shots, any day of the week, she asks the same questions.

Not good on her feet or knows what she’s talking about.

Did she even do sports before THV?

I know someone who thought about applying, but didn't because the position was sports/ general news

so is Aiyanya going to move to news after the Razorbacks go to a bowl
or did she want to do news and took the job to get in the door?

her sports talk is so green I can't watch, don't get me started on her radio sports talk. Actually, there is nothing to say, she is mute and just laughs and repeats what you say.

I heard a rumor that Aiyana is staying in sports. She was supposed to report news after football season, but I guess they changed their minds after they saw how awesome she is at sports.

Awesome + Sports doesn't = Aiyana

Yeah, she might be the worst sports talent I've ever seen. Ever.

Aiyana called a high school mascot the bulldykes, instead of the bulldogs last Friday. That was awesome.

Only grade a talent comes to thv

(About Ayana)
She makes a lot of mistakes. She just keeps reading and doesn’t correct herself hoping she is the only one who knows. Classic.

There are several local reporters with resume tapes on the web, Aiyana's is still up.

I can't believe THV hired her as a sports MMJ.
1) You can tell she didn't shoot it

2) All the sports related stories are features, there is nothing that shows she knows about sports

3) Someone who has to dress the part (wearing football gear) and play around is trying to camoflage the fact they don't know what they're talking about

"She makes a lot of mistakes. She just keeps reading and doesn’t correct herself hoping she is the only one who knows."

She does that every story she reads! And Aiyana, everyone knows!

When I watch, Aiyana doesn't look comfortable on camera so it sounds like I am hearing it's because she isn't confident in her stories because she isn't a sports professional.

I think she doesn't care. Probably just happy someone put her on television.

FACT: She was unemployed when she came to 11 so they got someone who is right on par with the rest of their mmj's. AND..... wait for it, wait for it.... true to Gannett and THV form, they got her CHEAP!

They are hoping she improves over the next year. The new company line is to hire 'em fresh out of the 9th grade for minimum wage and then hold 'em hostage unitl they're 30. By that time they'll wise up!

the last post is right on track, by the time the MMJ's get good, they will wise up and leave knowing someone else will NOT take them for granted and actually pay them well and treat them better.

as for Aiyana, she plans to leave in about a year.

sounds like by the time Aiyana gets going, she will be gone.

Chris Kane really? Not that impressive. Sorry. He is young but needs to do a better job of understanding what his viewers want to know about. When you show general sports highlights, including showing highlights of game that was just on your network over highlights over state prep finals, didn't make too much sense.

At 3:47 PM, January 13, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Chris Kane was hired in a top 60 market with ZERO on-air experience past his internships.

It was the epitome of a news director trying to make ends meet so he hires a green sports talent because he can justify paying so little.

That's how it happened FYI.
