KATV Now Available on Direct TV in South Arkansas

Arkansans in South Arkansas that subscribe to Direct TV can now receive Little Rock TV station KATV, Channel 7. A news release from KATV says Senator Mark Pryor (D-AR) and Arkansas Fourth District Congressman Mike Ross (D-AR) were instrumental in getting the channel added to the Direct TV lineup. Due to the Southern counties being in a different TV DMA Little Rock channels aren't available on many of the cable systems are dish systems. I wonder if a push will be put on for all of the other Little Rock channels to be added down that way....why just KATV?!

Most people don't care if they have other stations or not, I would imagine. KATV has Razorbacks and Arkansas news/weather..and those are the most important things to folks. Why only Directv? How about the Dish Network???

This is so idiotic. KATV and other Little Rock stations already have a market to big for them to cover. It makes no sense.

I read the article and KATV is full of itself. They say they have award winning news!! Yeah, right. They talk about weather coverage needed for south Arkansas, Shreveport stations cover southeast Arkansas very well. I know, I watch the Shv stations all the time. The sports have Razorback highlights and some stories from Texarkana and southeast Arkansas. Like the LR market, most of their stories come from the population center (LZK or SHV).

For some reason, I don't think this right, fair, or legal. On DirecTVs website, they don't state the name of the new channel as KATV/ABC affiliate but as independant/ARKNEWS channel.

I wonder how they pulled it off. Looks like the Shreveport stations would fuss.

I am not in the TV business--just a big TV watcher. What is wrong at Channel 7 KATV? They seem to be having technical difficulties over and over in the last several months. Tonight was terrible during Dancing with the Stars. A string of local commercials, deleted one of the biggest parts of the show. There were two more incidents like that. Once there was no pic, no sound. Little glitches all the time. I am in Little Rock.

Oh, I think the Shreveport stations will be in a fuss...they'll say well we cover places that aren't in our DMA..what about that? Its not fair, its not right. And of all stations, why KATV?

I saw this article this morning and went and checked my Direct TV guide (I live in Magnolia) and they did not have a listing for channel 60. When is this change go into effect?

I think what they've forgot to tell folks is you apparently need an HD receiver to get the station in the expanded counties. Don't know that you need an HD tv or HD programming..but I'm pretty sure you've got to have the HD receiver to get the station.

If this got out to the national media, they'd have a field day with this.

It's not just for weather or razorbacks. We've been able to watch razorbacks fine. We would like to hear about whats going on in Arkansas not Louisana. Some of us don't really care about the Louisana High Schools stats/city problems, etc. The weather on the Shreveport stations are fine for this area. What is the big deal, people, that we would like to know whats going on in Arkansas! Apparantly there has been enough of a complaint about it that something was done!

I suppose population density and market designation have made Southern Arkansas reporting pretty tough to justify on a regular beat basis for NW La. news stations.
KTVE Monroe-Eldorado was the exception due to market designation. Prior to 1985, Shreveport-Texarkana-Longview was the mkt. designation and so you had a lot or East Texas coverage by S'port stations. In '85, things changed...a CBS afffiliate came to Longivew ( it's now Fox KLMG I think) and market was re-designated Tyler-Longview.
With technology today...I imagine covering fringes of a mkt. ADI is more possible. Just wondering if the companies will pay for bureaus?

I wonder why the same deal wasn't cut with DISH Network. Those customers are still left out.

Well, like most other things that come out of Washington D.C., this story isn't all its cracked up to be. The KATV news segments will the only thing broadcast on DIRECTV channel 60...no other regular KATV programming..including Arkansas Razorbacks sports will be seen. Plus customers must do an upgrade fee and then pay 10 dollars a month to receive the news feed only.

I'm with the last post. By law, they can't show the ABC programming put out by KATV because of some law. Only the news part. So, you don't get severe weather break-in coverage because you won't know to watch that channel. :0

The bottom line from KATV all the way to Directv via the FCC . . .$$$

What ABC programming from KATV? They are always preempting it for some reason.

I do think that in a perfect world anyone should be able to get LR locals anywhere in AR. On the other hand I should also be given the option to get Memphis Locals (or cough...Greenville MS locals).

This is basically Mike Ross raising a stink because Nevada County was taken out of the LR DMA. The early SEC football games shown on KATV are also available in the Shreveport Market via KMSS.
