I told you all about KLRT kicking butt.

And yes, the 50+ crowd has more money to spend than 50-.

Great target demographic.

Isn't 50+ the market size, not the demo?

Hey KLRT won the AP and you guys said talk to us when you win an Emmy.

Well what do you have to say now?

At 9:00 AM, October 08, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, I think in this case 50+ refers to the market size.

I credit KLRT for working hard, but really, their newscast is amateurish and quite boring. They'd be better off with a 30 minute cast that could be more upbeat, and faster paced. Why give an hour-by-hour forecast? Such blatant audience manipulation, trying to keep them tuned in. Really, 30 minutes and into some "hot" syndicated program for the balance of the hour. I wish this was a metered market so we could see the audience swing from the first to second half hour.

9am Are you serious? Really, all newscast are gimmicks.

The Emmy were judged by people in other markets and they didn't think FOX16 were amaterish.

So are you saying the other stations in the market are better than FOX16.

FOX16 won the Emmy award and AP awards for 2007.

KARK had a story on their website about a new creative services director. What happened to the old one (I think his name was Rob?)

The new Creative Services director at KARK used to work with us. He's a good guy and should do well there.

Congrats to Charles and Neil on their Alamo piece, and to the U of A and KAIT.

And hopefully, FOX16 can come back next year and prove this was no fluke.

Given how much recognition Fox has gotten, I don't think anyone can deny that they've become a player in the market -- whether you agree that they should be or not.

Personally, their newscast isn't my taste. I agree with 9AM that they just spend half the newscast drawing attention to the services they're providing. I'm not sure that came across very clearly, so as an example: the whole "County by County" concept -- Fox is by no means the only station to give a portion of their newscast to areas outside the LR region (you can't tell me anyone in the market does more Arkansas-focused news than KARK), they just market it better so viewers feel like they're getting more than they actually are.

Then again, this market seems to appreciate a style of newscast different than what I'm accustomed to having grown up in another market so it could be I'm just the odd one out.

Just for transparency's sake: I do work for another station here in LR, but it's neither KARK nor KLRT.

How the hell did KAIT win anything.

This is 9:00 am.
No, I am not saying that other stations are better than KLRT, not at all, and I did not say that. I was posting regarding KLRT and that is all I addressed.

I think all the stations in this market should raise the bar. There is not enough attention to detail in everything from graphics to wardrobe to story flow to editing.

And I agree with you 100% (10:17). Most of the newscasts are gimmicks and promotional vehicles for other programming or station contests or events or blah, blah, blah.

I stand by my OPINION that the newscast would be more watchable and upbeat if it was 30 minutes. Like Fox stations in other markets, they have a great opportunity, there is room for improvement there and at all stations.

Like I said, they work hard, and I just happen to think the results could be even better for them in terms of viewership and share if they could look from the outside at their product, and that goes for all stations, all markets, all time slots. In general, many can't see the forest for the trees.

They have a great set, a great production, and they won.

Non-dramatic talent in the weather department, and they cover just about everything with their hour-long report.

Good job, KLRT!

What happened to Rob, the Creative Services Director at KARK?

At 3:07 PM, October 08, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Rob went to KATV, Phil from Klrt went to KARK to replace Rob.

Folks Phil is a one trick phony. He's not a leader, but an asskisser.

KLRT's promos always looked solid to me. Guess we'll have to wait and see waht happens at KARK.

Sure, you want them to change it cause they're kicking your butt. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Stay tuned for more . . .

Good move for Phil going to KARK.. Now he gets to be the director instead of the number two guy -- he finally realized Allen Snyder's not going anywhere..

At 8:22 PM, October 08, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

1:02pm, for all its problems (small market, ancient set, ever-changing talent), KAIT still does a pretty good job. Compared to many other stations in that general market size (think WABG, WBBJ, KIEM, KTWO, etc.) - they do a stellar job.

Yalanda Young for the best bod award.

I'm so sick of reading about how great Yalanda Young's belly button is or how awful Mitch Lilly is on his third tour of duty. Craig Rickert carries KAIT. Give some credit to the one person who actually WORKS to improve KAIT's news. Congrats to him and all of the hard WORKING staff in Jonesboro who made that Emmy happen.

To the above poster:

I haven't worked in TV for years. They are not kicking my butt unless they are going after someone who works in a completely different industry now. Don't take offense to my post, as it was not intended to offend or criticize. It was my opinion. Please take the time to read my other post at 1:50 pm.

As for Rob, KARK lost a really great employee. I wonder why he jumped ship? KATV is very lucky to have him.

NATAS Mid-America has files of entries, nominations & winners on their site, and if I did my math correctly:

KARK: 4 entries in as many categories
KATV: 8 entries across 5 categories
KTHV: 30 entries across 16 categories
KLRT: 7 entries across 6 categories

At 6:41 PM, October 09, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

1:51pm: KARK entered four categories -- Evening Newscast, Feature News Report (light), Feature News Report (serious), Historical/Cultural (news story/feature)

the one category you're thinking of is probably the single nomination they got -- that being for Evening Newscast

At 6:45 PM, October 09, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

1:52pm: KATV submitted three entries for Evening Newscast, two entries for Investigative Report, plus one each for News Excellence, Promotion (news promo – single spot) and Writer (news)

Only news excellence and evening newscast got nominations, which on a side note somewhat surprised me -- Steve Powell is usually a sure thing for the writing category.

Rob Thomas wants to be a news director, he will sit in the pitch meeting and spill out nonsense stories about how his kids school doesnt have soap in the bathroom and expect a story about it. Any one at seven ask him about the"slide incident", that is where his 40 year old self climbed up a slide and fell off it breaking his leg. Then he came to work and wanted a news story done on how dangerous slides are.

He also is the one that got Brett Cummins fired because he had a problem promoting a gay guy. And all of his promos were sappy and lame. Expect all of sevens promos to be all about how happy they are to be alive.

Most people at four were glad to see him go.

At 8:36 AM, October 10, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The Sales Dept. at KARK was not happy to see Rob leave. He was client/advertiser friendly, which ironically hurts the newscasts when you sell advertiser driven stories and promotions.

At 11:31 AM, October 10, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Rob Thomas is good guy. He will benefit Channel 7. We asked Rob to be in our (Channel 4) news editorial meetings. Rob has a strong news background and was another intelligent voice that joined the many other smart people sitting in our morning meetings. We wish Rob well.
And we are excited to already have Phil now sitting where Rob used to sit in our morning meetings. It's obvious Phil is excited to be at KARK. Like Rob, Phil is smart and passionate about promoting what is good and valuable about Channel 4. It would be foolish to not have your brand manager in your news meetings. Phil has energy and drive and after seeing what he helped accomplish at FOX16 we are pumped to now have him on our team.

At 3:26 PM, October 10, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah we're glad Phil is sitting in on KARK meetings. He never added must to our meetings.
Phil is not that strong and wait till he starts kissing Gayle's ass.

You better watch your back

Most of us at FOX liked Phil. His promos were the best in the market. Sounds like someone in these walls at KLRT is a liitle jealous that he's moving up in the world. I just hope that his promos at KARK aren't as good as they were here.

What was up with the helicopter over downtown Friday afternoon with the Ch. 4 logo on it? Is it a temporary thing? or do they have one now?

At 12:25 AM, October 11, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Phil is a whiney baby. He likes to talk about everything they can't do, won't put I'm the extra hours if needed to get things done and blames his problems on everything else. There's a reason chuck never moved him into the promotions director position, he couldn't manage. Best of luck 4

At 4:52 AM, October 11, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm pretty sure that Phil never asked to be the Promotion Director here at FOX. I think he did all our of promos anyway. I wish him the best over there. He's a good guy to work with.

KARK always flys a helicopter when news warrants. I noticed "Sky 4" was providing live aerials during the Race for the Cure. They were also above the razorback game in Little Rock.

That is enough to make them #1 in the next book. Look out 16! they got a "chopper."

Too bad they can't interview anyone from up there.

Rob will do fine at KATV. I just wouldn't let Dale meet Mrs. Thomas. It will change his opinion of Rob in a heart-beat.

This is nothing against Rob or his wife, they are both wonderful people. This is about the attitudes of Dale.

4:52,

Of course Phil wanted to be a promotion director, whether at FOX or somwhere else - hence he took the KARK job. Once again, Allen Snyder isn't leaving FOX anytime soon. The writing was on the wall for Phil. He's a good guy, going to a sinking ship however.

7:36, I've read a lot of really nasty and ill-deserved barbs on this blog...but yours takes the cake. You've got one hell of a nerve bringing that up at all...and spare us the crap about it being "Dale's" problem. It's bad enough how people like you don't have the balls to attack someone in person, but to drag a man's wife into this crap is completely inexcusable. You ought to be ashamed of yourself, but I doubt you have the moral fiber to recognize it.

KARK doesn't take as much interest in the Emmys. Rick Iler was big into them when he was there. At that time, they won several best newscasts. Do the viewers really care anyway?

Leave KAIT alone! There Emmy was for a provocative series entitled: MR.FOOD ON TRIAL-A MAN OR MYTH. A 3part in-depth investigative piece examining Mr. Food's obesity. Craig Rickert was brilliant. Rickert exposed the core of FOOD's weight problem when he probed, "Mr. Food, how much do you really weigh?" Mr. Food left in disgust. Mitch Lilly was later seen asking for Rickert's autograph. Gongrats all around to KAIT, Craig Rickert, Yalanda Young's belly button, and to the staff and management at KAIT. JOB WELL DONE.

No, no, no. You got it wrong with Rick Iler. Ginger Daril was news director when KARK won its first AP best newscast early this decade. Losers in management demoted Ginger. Losers in management hired another loser like them, and he inherited a news product that had already won AP best newscast. Then KARK repeated, but Iler, that rat loser, inherited a winning news product from Ginger. He backed into an AP best newscast award. I'm sure he assumed all of the credit for it and put it on his resume, but he doesn't deserve any. He was only news director for one of them, and he only sort of won it with the news product Ginger Daril built. He owes her.

His double weather concept failed because Parella Lewis and Brett Cummins had no chemistry together. It could've worked if the talent Rick used actually had chemistry. They didn't, and it failed because he was too stupid to figure that out. Yet, it was so obvious.

He tried to get KARK out of third place. He failed at that, too. He lied all the time. He was such a loser. Little regard for the guy here on this post. What a loser ole Ricky boy was. What a loser. Do not like him. A meddler, a liar, a schemer and a loser. Just a dumb---. Anyone attributing that AP award to him is mistaken.
