Nexstart Big Dawgs at KTAL...Why???

This from a tipster: There is big trouble at KTAL. The CEO and all the coorperate officers of Nexstar Broadcsting are in Shreveport for three days. The CEO has never been there for three days.

KTAL is having a huge turnover both in front of and behind the camera.

Sales are way down and many long time advertisers have stopped advertising with them. These same advertisers are still advertising with the other local stations, just not with KTAL.

I want to start by saying I don't work in the market put havr ties there. I have no idea what is going on there but the whole thing smells. This is posted from a tipster??? Come on let's at least get some facts to go with this. How do you know their revenue is down? Do you have a copy of their books or do you work there? This is the kind of crap spreading that doesn't just effect KTAL but all stations in all markets. No vested interest in KTAL but I would hate to think that we would start talk like this at anyone's station. That is what is wrong with this industry. Kick'em when they're down.

Good point from previous poster and the question would be, can you name these members of brass in town or the advertisers that have dropped off KTAL exclusively? Sounds like the tipster is a mole with an agenda.

Sounds like Scotty T. might be headed out to graze.

If Perry Sook is there for three days, there is definitely something brewing. He usually limits his visits to 30 minutes.

Oh please, Nexstar will never get rid of Scott Thomas. Chuck Stephens, the General Sales Manager yes, but not Scott.

bI am a former AE at KTAL, and yes there are advertisers who have stopped advertising with the station.
A couple of these advertisers flatout told me they would not advertise with the station. The advertisers in question are advertising with KSLA, KTBS/KPXJ, KMSS, KSHV, and with Lifewise Cable Media, which is owned by KTBS/KPXJ.
Those advertisers who would not advertise with me when I was at KTAL are now advertising with me at one of the stations listed above.

OMG! Prozac anyone???

I personaly air our commercials 5, well make that 6 days a week for now, and I have noticed only four or five local advertisers who stopped advertising with us over the past two or three years.

No the sky is NOT falling at KTAL like some have suggested. Some of us at the station are very happy there. Tired yes, but very happy.

Why would they not advertise with KTAL?

At 7:27 PM, October 08, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

This whole advertising theory is just silly. KTAL (or rather NBC) has some of the biggest shows on TV right now - Chuck, Heroes, et al... People may be less than enthusiastic about advertising during the news (but I have heard nothing of the sort), but folks would be stupid not to advertise during primetime.

KTAL is the biggest station in the Nexstar group and since they're just a hop away in Irvine, seems natural for them to pop in for a visit.

No secret that Nexstar's share price is under $2 and its market trend has been on the consistent downslide since May. However 2nd Qtr earnings reported were up 2.7%
Shreveport-Texarkana ADI adsales aren't the greatest for some operations here so could be corporate is just doing a little pow-wow to see what's going on. Who knows. Timing is kind of interesting...could be coincidental...maybe it's not.

Let's all stay tuned!

KTAL is NOT the Biggest Station in the Nexstar Group. WBRE / WYOU is the biggest TV Market with KARK close behind. KOLR-10 is the biggest revenue maker.

At 1:55 PM, October 09, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KOLR 10 was the biggest revenue maker a couple of years ago. That revenue was gained by two stations there. KARK now has more revenue than both those stations combined.

ktal is a mess. nextar needs to wash their hands of that filthy station!

At 7:56 AM, October 10, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So KTAL has undergone a couple of changes...But only because the ND resigned...Most stations need some type of regulation after that, right? Nobody is taking over anything, the goal is to just improve and the big wigs stopping by are only initiators of change...not some so called takeover. Question: How would anyone besides KTAL sales department know that sales were down? People need to slow down with the K-TAL rumors!!!

KTAL is not a filthy station any more. They fired Willie Harris Monday morning and the place has not smelled better or looked cleaner.

This is to the comment posted @ 7:56am October 10, 2008.

This is not a rumor. This is a fact. Here is a prime, or should I say primetime, example.

Did my eye's and DVR deceive me, or did you not run three seperate breaks with nothing but no fee promo fill during the Pittsburgh/Jacksonville game this past Sunday? That is like three minutes of unsold primetime inventory. Same with primetime during the week.

Running all these no fee promo fills during primetime, or any other time, your sales revenue has to be down. Well unless you are charging Todd Warren to run his promo 1,000 times a day. Every day.

At 10:48 AM, October 10, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Todd Warren and his promo suck. I get that he knows weather, but he is ugly and boring. 1,000 promos a day makes him look worse. I'm glad KTAL spent all the money on Todd and Rick Boone. WASTE

By reading a couple of these comments it looks like Chuck and/or Joey have discovered this site.

At 1:56 PM, October 10, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh please! You think Todd is bad. Try working in the "ego-fest" we have going on over here at my station.

Oh and by the way. We DO have several former KTAL advertisers who refuse to deal with you. You can thank Scott and Cheryl for that.

I heard RUPERT MURDOCH was vsiting THE FOX NEWSCHANNEL today in N.Y.? Also, heard Roone Arledge is back from the dead, and paid a visit to Charlie Gibson at ABC.
Rumor has it that ROSS PEROT is going to purchase the whole city of Shreveport? WARREN BUFFETT and Perot are working out the details.
Does anyone know if Vladimir Putin is attempting a takover of RAYCOM INC.? I guess they rename it RAYCOMMUNISTS. Good Night and Good Luck

Sincerely

I do hafta say that the station image jingle is soooooo 10 or 15 years ago... very lame.

At 12:58 AM, October 12, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I sure hope Scott's poor performance as the station's general manager will have a negative effect on the employees' careers.
If they're going to make cuts, hopefully they're smart enough to hack those who are stunting the station's growth.
The two biggest problems???
Mike Murff and Scotty T.

At 1:10 PM, October 12, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nexstar never gets rid of the actual problem. They will fire or run off half the station before they would ever get rid of the GM.

Now if they actually did get rid of Scott and Murff you would see the station turn around within 3-6 months.

At 1:48 PM, October 12, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, I have to agree on that one. That new image jingle has a 1980's movie sound track quality about it.
Juging from the ratings it is not "Making A Differance."

Well at least yours is not as lame as our weather image is. "We Track Storms." Oh please!

NEWSFLASH! KTAL Sales Manager Chuck Stephens turned in his resignation Friday sitting "family issues." His last day will be Novemeber 5th. The day after the election. Thing at KTAL must have been that bad for him to resign before he got fired.

At 3:22 PM, October 13, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That is shocking. Corperate was swift this time. Chuck is just the start. There are one or two more managers who wiil be leaving too.

At 4:22 PM, October 13, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Two managers gone in two weeks and one or two more managers about to be leave? So the "gossip" and "rumors" are all true. That is very telling.

KBMT-TV, Beaumont, TX....PAUL BERGEN returns to Beaumont as ND for this McKinnon Broadcasting owned ABC affiliate. Paul had been ND for KBTV in Beaumont until March of this year when he left for a brief stint as ND for KTAL-TV in Shreveport. At KBMT, he replaces MILES RESNICK who left the station earlier this year after eight years as ND.

With all these people coming and going you should get rid of even more reporters and anchors.

Rick Boone needs to be shown the door first. How can anyone stand to sit next to him every day? Just make sure the next guy can read copy. That new girl who looks like she is 15 needs to go. She is horrible! This has to be her first job. All the sports guys need to go too.

At 10:25 AM, October 14, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If KTAL is going to get rid of any one they need to get rid of all the producers. Have any of them ever produced a flawless show?

At 1:11 PM, October 14, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KTAL NEEDS TO GET RID OF:

Scott "Screech" Thomas
Brandon "getter" Dunn
Rick "hair paint" Boone
Todd "personality" Warren
"Fats" York
And any other overpaid ego monster. The numbers are a direct reflection of the management and Talent, Not the history of the station, like they want you to believe. How long can managers use, "Ktal has been bad forever." Forever was last week. People watch every station. Good talent gets noticed. If not then why have numbers at all? Just say 3 and 12 are one and two forever and go on.

At 5:21 PM, October 14, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

3 and 12 and been the #1 and #2 stations in viewers and revenue since before we were ever born. 6 has always been, and will always be #3.

I dunno...FWIW KTAL has always tried to serve two newsmarkets (poorly): Texarkana and Shreveport-Bossier.
Although part of the same ADI, Texarkana is really its own teeny market with its own identity. Viewers in T-town couldn't care less about news coverage in Shreveport and vice-versa. But because KTAL's license was originally "Texarkana", this has always seemed to give it impetus to cover Texarkana more than the other stations seem to. (At least that's the "perception".)

I'm sure there's an argument to be made for courting local T-Town advertisers but I'd be interested to see the breakdowns on total ad dollars from T-town biz and the costs asscociated in getting those dollars.

Plus you have to consider the "one-size-fits-all" corporate news consultancy that Nexstar seems to employ. Better station animations and dorky 1980's-sounding jingles do not a strong brand make. From where I sit, the S'port-Texarkana (mkt 82) has always been a peculiar one and needs a more customized approach than "off-the-shelf" remedies.

Of course you have to remember that TV is handled by MBA's these days and not TV people. And the biggest lesson learned here is that doing the same thing the same way and anticipating a different result is the truest definition of insanity or stupidity...take your pick. Cuz the end result is still very much the same.

Even though KTAL's studio has been at it's present location in Shreveport since 1962 it is still a Texas station licensed out of Texarkana Texas.

Most of KTAL's viewers are in the "T-town" area and the rural areas outside the city limits of S'port-Bossier.

Scott Thomas is old and out of touch with reality. He THINKS he is good at what he does, therefore he is always tripping over his own EGO. There are some good people there who really want to report the news, yet you have Murff trying to run the newsroom with a 6th grade mentality. KTAL could turn itself around if they could get rid of "MONKEY BRAIN"(Scott Thomas), and replace Murff with a High School graduate.

At 8:20 PM, October 15, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh come on. You know as well as I do they will let both of us go before they ever let Scott or Murff go.

At 8:24 PM, October 15, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

seems obvious that dissatisfied folks at KTAL like to talk a lot of trash. my suggestion is: if you're not happy where you work, get another job, unless your talent and skill level disallow that option!
As far as KTAL revenue--let third quarter market share reports be the judge, not some ill-informed blogger...

As any CFO knows, you can have a dog of a station and still make money. Bottomline is what it's all about.
