Change's on the Way to 40/29's Morning Show?

This from a tipster: Viewers may soon notice big changes in 40/29's morning show. Word around Northwest Arkansas is morning anchor Jennifer Haile has been demoted to morning show reporter. The change in job title will even effect her paycheck, and not in a good way. Melissa Kelly and Derek Burleson will soon be named as morning anchors for the show. They'll join morning meteorologist Patrick Crawford in giving away sunrise mugs to viewers.

great idea!
haile has the personality of a piece of dry toast. she is unable to carry that show on her own.

I liked watching Jennifer each morning. It's sad that management chose to make this decision. I like watching Melissa on-air, don't get me wrong and this would be a good move for her, but it's tacky what the ND is doing to her.

That is a tacky move by the ND. He has no class and people who work with him say he's incredibly shallow.

The ND is more interested in Ellen and Oprah

There needed to be a change. We will have to wait and see if this is the right move.

Morning show shake ups must be contagious. The same thing happened down in Texarkana/Shreveport a few months ago.

You can switch around the players all you want, but there is a constant denominator:
BAD MANAGEMENT

When in doubt, promote a sports anchor. Many Arkansas television stations have done it in the past and seen immediate success. Well, other than Craig at KTHV.

This is a reaction to the fact that both KFSM and KNWA have taken the lead in the AM show. KFSM led the way with two AM anchors and the ladies have dominated. When KNWA added the guy to their their show that made the mix with the girl work well. The truth is the change needs to be made at the ND job. They have lost ground big time to both CBS and NBC in all newscast. The big issue is a ND doesn't get changed by a GM at a Hearst station. It has to come from corporate obviously. Who replaces the sports guy? Let me guess...another out of towner that doesn't know Hog sports?

It's because he doesn't have a third leg like the chicken does.

so will Burlison be totally out of sports at KHOG?

At 6:32 PM, October 12, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

And the show has an audience of like 100 households?

I started watching 40/29 when some idiot (GM ?) decided to put Bobbi Miller on KFSM's morning show. At that point, Jennifer was somewhat better than Bobbi. You could see straight through Bobbi's head--so it would not take much to be better than that. I have continued watching, but I even said last week how it is getting pretty bad. It is very obvious to me that Jennifer needs to go--she has become very "dead pan". This is a good call. Derek and Melissa will be a welcome change. I like them both. Amazing they have not gotten ran off yet.

Know someone who interviewed for the assistant news director job. And he got all "I know everything and your stupid" on the person (who has a a track record of increasing ratings). Goes to show that 40/29's whole package will stay the same until someone is knocked off their high horse. Attitudes and egos run too many stations--and normally the stations that are not at the top.

Melissa has been horrible the times she's filled in, so I guess it's up to Dereck...still, they're trying to play follow the leader

At 9:23 PM, October 12, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I know Jennifer isn't the best anchor in the bunch, but she's still much better than Melissa Kelly. Melissa Kelly is a good reporter, but her anchoring sucks. Maybe the ND sees something in Melissa Kelly that we obviously don't. I'd rather watch Jennifer Haile over Melissa Kelly.

Tiffany Stewart would have been the smarter choice here. Melissa Kelly replace Jennifer Haile? Yeah right! I have to see it to believe it.

Here's what I've heard from other sources in the NWA television media circle: Burelson is in and Jen Haile is out. I'm not certain of who the replacement is...but for all we know, it could be someone new to the market OR a Hearst transplant from another station.
Either way, it is obvious that 40 is playing catch up to the leader...
I would love to see a change, but will it help viewership?...only time will tell. Wasn't bringing Leslie back to mornings the original plan anyways?

At 4:31 PM, October 13, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree that they are playing catch up, but the other two stations are not that far ahead. It won't take long.

I use to work the morning show, and what they need to change is the director down in ft. smith that does the morning show. She sucks!! Sits in black, can't give cues to save her life, and a camera shot. what a joke!! I am glad I am gone.

What about the way the morning anchor changes were announced - and the way Jennifer was told? I heard how badly it was managed. Anyone care to comment from the inside? Do the employees there actually respect that news director?

40/29 used to be the unquestionable king in this market. They did everything better than anyone else. My, how the mighty do fall!!!

They must have 15 year olds producing their newscasts. (Watched their 5:00 lately?)

Their promotions department doesn't even try to promote good will in the community. (I can't tell you how many event organizers will no longer work with them.)

I could go on, but if you know this market, you can see it with your own eyes. (That is, when they have a signal you can see or lighting that doesn't add 10 years to their anchors.) And some of their reporters! I would send them back to grade school.

I feel sad for Craig Cannon and Donna Bragg.

I would love to read responses to the last poster at 10:52. What is really going on there? Are the managers really so blind they can't see what is happening to a once great local news source?

Isn't this market #100? Who cares?!

obviously you do if you're posting here.

You are 100% right. Of course you must have been confused and meant KFSM because as far as product goes everyone knows 40/29 is far superior. Yes, I know the ratings show KFSM in front but there are many reasons for that that don't have anything to do with how good the newscasts, reporters, or anchors are. KFSM is the one that people around NW Ark and even Fort Smith are laughing at. The funny thing is that 40/29 is far far from perfect but KFSM is so crappy that it makes 40/29 look much better than they actually are.

I hate the way the anchors sound like they are broadcasting from a huge warehouse. How about some sound treatment or something???

the audio issue is all in your head. the anchors sound great.

Really?? I don't think so. The new studio has audio problems. If you can't hear it you need to have your ears checked.

What a bunch of do do heads on here. Oh by the way any other good rumors out there on 40/29 or 5? Man 5 is winning with hotties like the Ashleys and Scallan.

I will not watch it with Melissa Kelly. She cannot read the prompter without sounding like a 2nd grader, studdering and squinting like it's her first day on the job. Jennifer was like spending everyday with your best friend. What an incredibly stupid move 40/29. I will find a new morning show!!

That desk guy used to the glue that held our newsroom together, but lately his head is not in the game. He won't be missed.

At 3:46 PM, October 17, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Glue can only last so long. I heard he was just tired of being the fill in for every job that was cut.

At 5:28 PM, October 17, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

What jobs were cut?

At 5:45 PM, October 17, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

There was a newsroom administrative assistant at 40/29, who was the NDs assistant and had additional random newsroom duties. She was reassigned to work with the GM, and some of her duties went to the desk guy.

When producers are out, count on the desk guy to produce.

You could count on this guy to edit video and AP too.

When photogs are short, count on the desk guy to shoot video.

When someone needs to set up a live shot, count on the desk guy to bring the truck out and tune in the shot.

The desk guy also wrote a lot of the VOs and VOSOTs in the newscasts, in additional to doing payroll and vacation requests for news employees.

All this doesn't include the general stuff, like getting FOIs, looking for stories and being the liason between street crews and people in the newsroom.

I think I'd get sick of the job too if I were him.

Either way, I thought this was about the morning show.

Ok, Anthony. You've proved your point.

I know what this is about... bad management.

At 8:12 PM, October 17, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

maybe the desk guy will be better at organizing drapes than news crews.

I hope so, for his sake.

At 9:08 PM, October 17, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

obviously, you wouldn't even know a good desk guy. quit bitching and get back to what you call work, beotches

At 9:16 PM, October 17, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

sounds like a sinking ship "beotches"

At 10:31 PM, October 17, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anthony was awesome at his job, but even when I was there, he got "crapped" on alot. He did have to produce, edit and all the other things when a reporter, producer, photog. was out. Marilyn was the goddess of the newsroom, opinionated and a bit "witchy" at times, but she got the job done effectively. I can understand why Anthony would leave and I wish him the best of luck!!!!
However, the management lacks in good communication skills and it is beginning to really show in the quality of the newscasts, ratings or not.
