40/29 Moving Weather/Anchor to NWA

This from a tipster: In Januray of 2009 40/29 is moving there weather department up to Rogers. And then Donna will also be moving up there next year too. It will be all NWA all the time.

There's gotta be more to the story here.

Okay...it's common knowledge wx is moving up north pretty soon, but Donna Bragg too? Was she planning to move up there anyway, or is she moving as part of the big anchor gig?

Does Fort Smith suck that bad? Oh wait...I already know the answer to that.

How is 40 going to deal with all the old geysers of LeFlore County and Fort Smith? How are they to explain to viewers that their main squeezes up and left them alone in their measley towns, without actually admitting that Fort Smith, Sallisaw and Poteau IS measley?

Oh well, that's for them to deal with.

People in NWA or LR bashing Fort Smith is like somebody bragging about winning a beauty contest at fat camp. You're still a small-timer in those towns, no matter how much you delude yourself.

As for NWA, you're market 102 with Fort Smith. What are you without it? 130? 140?

Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.

All the tv stations abandoning Fort Smith creates an opportunity. A small time operator can produce a Fort Smith only newscast and place it on one of the poorly used public access cable channels.

By the way, spring radio ratings from Arbitron for Fort Smith came out yesterday. The top three are KMAG, KOMS, and KISR. But the publicly available report only includes stations that actually subscribe to Arbitron, and KTCS is among the stations that don't. I'm sure if they did, they would have been one of the top three. I presume subscribing stations would get the full report and know where KTCS stands.

So I take it that the FSM newsroom will shut down when Wx leaves. No offense, but there should be a separate market for NWA since it's such a big boom area. I frankly could care less what happens in Fay/Spring/B'ville/Rog.
IT would be funny if Fred Baker Jr. became the "god" of the television waves like he is on the radio waves in the morning. At least we would have news that revolves around the River Valley and not the stuck up idiots in NWA.

At 6:20 PM, August 06, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Fred Baker has no credibility. How many stories has he made up over the years? Morgan Nick's body buried under concrete comes to mind here but there were many others. He knows nothing about weather either. He has no idea what he is talking about but does a great job of making uneducated river valley folks think he is some sort of "god"? Baker is a gossip monger not a journalists of any sort.

At 7:42 PM, August 06, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree that Khbs and Khog should split and be seperate stations. If you add up Ft.Smith, Van Buren, Alma, and Ok, and all the other coverage area's south of Rogers and Fayetville, Its about the same size if not bigger than NWA. We don't deserve to be 2nd rate to NWA. We have news in ft.smith and surrounding areas. KFSM seems to cover both equally. There still needs to be a presence here. I think this will sink 40/29.......bubble bubble.

At 10:10 PM, August 06, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Actually there isn't really that much news in Fort Smith, except crime.

Viewers wonder why there isn't too much emphasis on the River Valley, and the real reason is THERE'S REALLY NOTHING MUCH GOING ON!

At 11:45 PM, August 06, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

What seems amazing is that the same type of story that would be a big deal in NWA would barely get a mention if it happened in the river valley. There are stories out there, it's more of an issue that there are fewer reporters working in Fort Smith, so it's difficult to cover those stories from a staffing standpoint.

At 11:47 PM, August 06, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think it's funny that even Northwest Arkansas is segmented. Take a look at how few "Fayetteville" stories make it into the news. As the stations split thier focus further, the area's in the middle suffer.

There are ALWAYS interesting stories to be found. But it requires working, instead of waiting on a press release.

Truth is... KNWA beat KFSM and KHBS in the May book for NWA/25-54 in more than one newscast.

40/29 has been in a free fall for 4 years. This is a strategic move that will reposition 40/29 to take back the market.

At 4:48 PM, August 08, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

But as we know, it will likely take 8 years to convince viewers to go back to them. What Happened over there?

KFSM has already started as well. The funny thing is the majority of the market doesn't realize that they have moved a ton of the content to NWA. Just for fun go back and look on this blog back in the day and see what was said when KNWA moved. Talk about foot in mouth now.

This market is nowhere near ready for a minority main anchor.

We have people in office on both sides of the market who are flat-out racist but still win elections.

I have to see it to believe it.

At 1:18 PM, August 13, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The market would watch an anchor of any race that would get off their duff and prove they are real journalist.

People watch the news to see (I know this is shocking) the news! If any anchor would get out and prove that they cover news, they would corner the market.

Too many "tv personalities" seem to think that an anchor chair means a cushy job.

Cutting off to NWA is a terrible idea... as is basing your coverage in just one part of the DMA. It is, was, and always has been a terrible idea.

There's a reason KNWA pulls less than half (and in some instances a third) of the other two stations' ratings. You can't just ignore more than half of your DMA and expect to do business. Something KHBS is about to learn.

And don't trump out those bullsh*t "Northwest Arkansas" numbers again. The sample isn't intended to be cut down that small, and it loses all meaning when you do. They teach you these things in school... would be great if more of you had gone there.

At 5:34 PM, August 15, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nowhere did it say that 40/29 would drop the River Valley; that's what people are assuming when the anchor team moves to one location. There's too much revenue that the River Valley provides, so it wouldn't make sense in dollars and cents to stop covering that particular area.

At 9:18 PM, August 15, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No anchors or resources, a couple of reporters maybe? Call it what you want but that's pulling out!!

At 9:27 PM, August 15, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It worked for KNWA. I have no idea where the earlier poster got their information about double and triple leads over NBC but it's wrong. By the way those NWA #'s do matter. When you grow audience share that big in NWA it weighs on the total DMA #'s. This is a great move for 40/29 if they do it right.

At 9:47 PM, August 15, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

"No anchors or resources, a couple of reporters maybe? Call it what you want but that's pulling out!!"

Viewers most of the time never have a clue on where people are anchoring from anyway; you made the point that there will still be a few reporters/photogs to provide information, so they aren't completely pulling out like KNWA.

At 12:01 AM, August 16, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That's what KNWA said at first if you go back and look at the facts. 40 is a distant 2nd in RV now and since KNWA's birth till now they have taken over 29's thrown in NWA. 29 is not even 2nd up north anymore. They have no choice but to make a radical move but let's see if this is the right radical move.

At 12:42 AM, August 16, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The info about the anchors moving up in January is wrong. The decision to move the main anchor team to one place was made years ago; in a corporate plan, this takes time.

As I said before, there's too much revenue from River Valley advertising to negate that part of the market. Just because anchors are in one place doesn't mean stories can't be covered in a different area. I don't deny that there's been a gradual shift in coverage; even 5 has shifted a lot of their focus across NWA, but the point remains that the Ft. Smith station will remain active and open; that's why this is NOT a radical move.

Replacing Craig Cannon might help their overall ratings!

At 4:27 PM, August 16, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Craig Cannon is the bomb. Can you see 40/29 without him? But I do agree, their ratings might improve if a foxy lady like Donna Bragg anchors with an older and handsome guy.

At 11:44 PM, August 16, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You didn't address the fact that KFSM has increased the gap over them in the RV and KNWA has not only taken over as the leader in NWA but in almost a 3 to 1 margin over 29. A RADICAL move is needed.

At 12:49 AM, August 17, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

"4:27 PM, August 16, 2008"

Get off the boards Craig. You had your heyday about 1998-2000. You need to move on and let someone else read the news. 40/29 has tried every combination, with you, for a co-anchor and yet you still don't get the ratings. For whatever reason your upper managers still keeps you around. Do you hi-light your hair to make you think your hip?....such tragedy.

I think it is our symphony orchesta that is coming to NWA for a school consert. Having said that, why is it necessary to keep stereotyping other areas of the state? All communities are unique and have something to offer.

At 10:58 AM, August 18, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If KNWA is so dominant why can't it sell the local breaks in the Olympics?

It seems like every time NBC throws it local, there's an Acne Free ad which I assume is a co-op. That's followed by a promo for "The Doctors" which is followed by the pat-ourselves-on-the-back promo for winning the Celebrate NWA awards.

At 5:35 PM, August 18, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You're watching and we appreciate that!!! It's called promotion. Oh yea, I forgot you have no idea what that means except when you want to brag about AP awards. By the way, you have a 50/50 chance of winning. Way to stick your neck out.

>>Once again, thank you for watching. It's great viewers like you that make us the most popular news in NWA.<<

I'm not watching your news. I'm watching the Olympics, which y'all have dropped the ball on during local breaks.

But go ahead and pat yourself on the back about those Celebrate awards. Must be nice to get awards from a magazine that contains more misspellings in a single issue than all the combined posts on this blog.

At 1:13 AM, August 20, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The magazine did not give out the awards. People in Northwest Arkansas voted. KNWA won best overall.

Neile Jones and Matt Turner were named best anchors. Dan Skoff best weather person. Aaron Peters best sports guy.

At 7:07 AM, August 20, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The only way any of those people would win an award is if they were the only ones to choose from. All of them are far far behind the people at equivalent positions at 40/29 and 5. If a real poll were done you would find that. I am sure the magazine's audience is far too limited to get a good sample of anything.

The outdated promo I see is not running during the news, or maybe it is. I do not watch the news on KNWA. I also do not work for any TV station. I am a viewer who asks you why you would be proud to be the wreck on the side of the highway that people all look at and just shake their head as they pass by. You should never be happy that viewers have to tell you about an outdated promo, commercial or any other problem. Maybe you guys should stop reading your little awards and get back to work. Also, do not fool yourself into this false security with your "At least you are watching attitude". It seems to me, you must be a very young excited to be in TV individual with a tremendous amount to learn about broadcasting and programming. Lesson number one.....

If you are going to stand up and brag on yourself....you better make sure you are making no mistakes on air. For example....running the same outdated ET promo for a week!

It seems awfully convenient that KNWA's talent was voted best in the area by a magazine that A) has a special segment featuring their editor, live, every Wednesday@5 and B) is located across the hall from the KNWA Rogers bureau. Awfully convenient.

As for the "most watched in NWA"... think again. Saw the July book yesterday, and KNWA isn't first overall OR in the (meaningless) Northwest Arkansas breakdown. Though, you'll have to wait a few days before your sales people can get their hands on a book for you, since you don't subscribe and all.

No, they weren't.

They were named "Most Admirable" not "Best Anchors." Big difference.

And somebody tell the airhead editors at Celebrate it should be "Most Admired." "Most Admirable" is, in that usage, grammatically incorrect.

By the way, show me an accurate audience measuring system that is accurate. Let's revisit the count once football season starts, shall we?

Very professional response of you. Explains why you're stuck in the backwater of NWA/FS instead of a decent market.

The joke is why a station that sued Bo Mattingly is bringing him back in any form. The guy stings the station out of the blue leaving them high and dry a year ago and is now able to come back and do work for them. You are telling me that Bo is the only one you could get as an analyst? I thought he made his bed. I guess I am the crazy one here.

At 2:37 PM, August 22, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why is everyone so jealous of Bo? Just sit back and enjoy his talent on the best station in Arkansas! So much anger on this board!!! Bo is back becasue he offers more insight to what is going on than anyone in the state! When it comes to the Hogs....nobody knows like Bo!

OK....I actually have no idea what I am talking about at all. Just wanted to get a rise out of some folks!! Who is Bo anyway??

I have no clue if Bo is good or not. I just know he is extremely bald!

At 7:18 PM, August 22, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I know several people at KNWA who say Bo did not leave the station high and dry. He offered to stay on in some compacity but the former ND and GM told him to hit the door and get ready to be sued. I do not know if that is the whole truth and nothing but the truth but it comes from a few reliable people there.

Bo is a loser and always will be one. The reason why he knows anything about ua sports is because he kisses everyone's butt as well as other parts of their anatomy.

Well, I WON"T be viewing, if they think NWA is so great they can keep it.
The new director is a pig anyway. Shame on you 40/29.
The river valley supported you when you were nothing and now this...good bye.
Oh you who thinks Fort Smith and the river valley is "measley," you obviously are without merit or a real education.
Get a life!

Wow this market has changed. KFSM still dominates total area, KNWA (Old 24/51) has showed that their choices did pay off and ABC still spinning their wheels. I have been watching and flipping. I have noticed that KFSM actually shows more NWA stories than 40/29. I'm not sure what that means but it's obvious to me that several more changes are on the way.

>>Neile Jones and Matt Turner were named best anchors.<<

>No, they weren't.

They were named "Most Admirable" not "Best Anchors." Big difference.<

You both got it wrong. They won an award for most cosmetics consumed in one broadcast. Neile is teaching Matt her clownwhore makeup application techniques.

At 1:51 PM, August 25, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I thought I was the only person who noticed Neile's clown makeup. Her face is very overdone and just too much. Neile needs to accept that she doesn't fit in with the other beautiful women at KNWA. Makeup doesn't help her achieve beauty status comparable to the likes of Kelly George, Mikey Goodwin and that sports chick.

I'm surprised Neile didn't get canned when KNWA did that sweep to get rid of the old people. Neile's hairstyle is funny-looking too. I think she might be a pretty girl under all the makeup.

Most of you posters are operations losers, who will never make a dime or amount to anything in life while working in TV, therefore you feel empowered to spew your hatred (anonymously of course) here on this weak blog. Address the real issue, you get paid shat while the anchors/reporters make a liveable if not better wage. If you don't like it, find a new job, but quit bitching. Your situation is your own fault.

Ah, nothing like the air of arrogance from an on-air talent. Guess what, if you're in Arkansas, you ain't "shat" either.

And before you accuse me of being a board op (you know the people who do the dirty work while you're fixing your hair), I'm just a viewer. But I'm a viewer who has seen on-air talent come through NWA who went on to Boston, Fort Myers, St. Louis and LA.

None of the current talent will come close to doing anything like that. So enjoy being a medium fish in a very small pond. It's your lot in life. But don't act like you've got network abilities.

You all pick on Neile because your anchors really are older than dirt. How old is Craig? How old is Bridget? Very is the answer.

1. "You're" means "you are" while "your" indicates ownership or possession.

2. Who currently working in NWA has the talent to move to a major metro? Where's the John Hartung (KFSM now LA) or Sean Kelly (40/29 now Boston) of this crop?

Your previous e-mail obviously shows you work, or worked at some point in this buisness behind the scenes. That's fine, I have no problem with that, but don't act like you can judge talent. You named 2 people who moved on.........

Bob Stokes worked at KFSM back in the day, but he's not working for the Weather Channel anymore. He was fired for sexual harrassment after asking his co anchor, "would you like to lick my swizzle stick?"

No, I've never worked in the media. I know several people (both on and off air talent) who did or do work in NWA.

Yes, I named two people who've moved on. You can search this blog for dozens of others. I named those two because they've gone on to the biggest markets.

Now can you name two current NWA anchors or reporters who have the talent to work in a top 5 market? How about a top 10 or top 20 market?

What's comical about this market is the people who stick around have bigger egos than the ones who've actually gone on to bigger and better things. Of course, that's probably why they're stuck here. They aren't humble enough to accept criticism and improve.

It's not my job to say this person should go to this market, or this person should stay; I'm not a talent scout or a GM. I work in this market, and I know people who work here who don't have ego's; it works both ways, and it's like that in every market.

There is plenty of talent here. Some will move on, while others will choose to stay.

I'm not as close to these people as the rest of you are but the two weather guys on CBS and NBC could go bigger market, one of the morning ladies on CBS and the sports guy on NBC. The lady on Fox sports is young but probably has more potential than any one of them. By the way, I don't think because you stay in a market you like and don't go a bigger one that you have the talent to go. It might mean you don't like big cities.

At 8:10 PM, August 27, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Good point. There are plenty of behind the scenes people who are here that like it and are talented.

I have worked in this business and I've seen the overworked egos of some of the on-air talent (reporters/anchors) and those who are humble. This latest batch of reporters at All of the RV & NWA stations fail to impress me. I know this is a stepping stone for some of them into better things. (Dan Thomas, Bob Swanson, Jamie Roth, Jill Poe, Sean Kelly, Sean Brown, Jonathan Betz, Pete Kelly, Damon Shaw, John Lee, Cecelia Pond-Mayo, Melissa Yeager, Matt Metcalf Juliette Vara and Pat Taney--just to name a few)

Who honestly gives a rat's behind about ratings? Ok, it gives the sales staff something to take to clients, allows news directors and GM's to eat Rolaids, bitch at those lower than them and run "Cheesy" POP's. The viewers want NEWS, not a bunch of crap that the stations are currently dishing out. I'm ashamed to actually admit that I used to work in this business. Oh and by the way, my salary when I left in 2003 was $20,000 for a producer. I managed to live quite comfortably, not like an anchor, but I could pay a mortgage and car payment and still have money for other things.

The above poster is an angry person. The market has been the same for years.
It is like a football player talking about his high school days when the team was great, when they were really mediocre. The poster believes the old reporters were the best ever when in fact they were probably about the same as what we currently see.

I don't have anything against the NWA station, they are okay, but your comment is an insult to my parents. Oh yeah, I bet you have parents too, so your comments are a reflection on your on parents/grandparents. Interesting.. OH DR. Freud!

Your old saying is out of date. The young and talented dominate in every field now like business, politics and yes even broadcasting. The average age of GM's, ND's, Sales Managers and talent is a lot younger. You're education is out of date.

This is funny! It's like listening to a group of 8 year olds go back and forth about who's dad has the coolest car! The truth is....it takes all kinds to pull this off. There is no hard rule about how old or young, etc. The people on camera could not do it without the pwople behind the scenes. Without sales, there would be no money. Without programming there would be nothing to sell. The behind the scenes people need someone to do the stand up. It is all tied together and the stations that know this and use it will have the best product on the air. We were all young or are young and if God leaves us here long enough we will all get old. So, we should all try and learn from each others best qualities to make us the best we can all be. But, that requires us to let down our guard a little and listen instead of talking all the time. And, yes....I need to do this myself!

Anybody notice that Leslee Wright hasn't been on the air in a week? And there was no goodbye?

Is it because she blew a gasket and screamed at her girlfriend/boss and was unceremoniously shown the door after the 5pm news one night last week? Did anyone else notice that Melissa Kelly was anchoring the 6pm news that same night?

Just wondering.

I've noticed Leslee wasn't on-air at the 6. I know Craig hate flying solo on a newscast (or he used to) What did happen to Leslee? Did she decide to leave early? Did she and Mike finally have it out? I thought they were all buddy-buddy?

Looking at 40/29's website, Leslee is not listed under the anchors/reporters. It's like she just disappeared. What happened?

She didn't "decide" to leave at all ... the decision to leave was made for her.

Speaking of Sean Kelly, I hear Hearst flew him and a cameraman from Boston to NOLA to cover Gustav for the chain.

At 11:33 AM, August 30, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes, Leslee left early after she had a disagreement with management. Let's move on.

Leslee had no clue how well she had it. She got to blow gaskets regularly at the crew, took epic-long breaks, and arrived at work when she wanted. She'll be missed, but not too much.

At 8:22 PM, August 30, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Like Leslee isn't the only "Diva" that there is, come on people. I think she got screwed and I don't blame her for blowing up at managment. I just wish her the best.

At 2:57 AM, August 31, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Don't blame Leslee for blowing up at management? Leslee blew up regularly, and people gave the strangest stares at each other when she blew up at the news director in front of everyone. Leslee might be a nice person in her personal life, but between 4:58 p.m. and 6:31 p.m. weekdays, Leslee Wright is no person you'd want to be friends with. Leslee Wright could become a pure beast if things didn't go her way.

At 6:39 PM, September 02, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Personally, I liked Leslee. She was a good reporter who knew what needed to be done. However, in working with her on Sunrise, I did see her blow up at the producer, director, camera operator and anyone else who did cross her path.
I do honestly wish her the best in her personal life and will miss her on the reporting aspect of the news business, not her anchoring. Sorry Leslee.

How can you claim something from Microsoft Earth as yours?? I know I’m not the only ones who sees through this crap. Come up with something original, and if you say you have the only one around here, make sure it’s YOURS!
