KAIT Looking to Hire Web Producer

Looks as though KAIT is wanting to take its website to the next step by hiring a "web producer".

The advertisment for the position says, "KAIT-TV, one of the country's highest-rated television stations, is now expanding its resources on the web. Newly-created Web Producer position for the newsroom will focus on the station's extremely popular website. If you are CREATIVE, can handle hard-work, flexible hours and the unexpected, we want you. You must be a great writer. Your job will include managing news content, keeping it updated with compelling stories, video, and pictures to slideshows. Interview, write, edit, and report stories. Some shooting (mini-P2) may be needed. Work in newsroom environment where the website is part of the daily culture. Journalist should be able to find unique "day of" stories, ways to tell the story differently from what is on the TV broadcast. These stories must be able to have some shelf life-through storytelling, visuals and/or emotion. If you have great ideas of how to take an excellent website to the next level we want to hear from you."

The Jonesboro flatlanders can always find something funny about the hillbillies to post.

Jonesboro recently got an escalator in the mall.

(And KAIT did a 2:00 pkg on it.)

First story:

A multi-part piece on just how easy it is to cross into the Missouri Bootheel on a Sunday and bring back beer with reaction from the local Church of Christ.

Why is KAIT even around? Why doesn't Jonesboro fall into the Little Rock or Memphis DMA? All of the stations picked up in Jonesboro are from one of those two cities. And now that Raycom owns both WMC in Memphis and KAIT in Jonesboro KAIT should really just be a newsroom instead of a stand alone station. Tell me where I'm wrong.

No, I agree. But KAIT is still part of Arkansas and a very DIFFERENT demographic of people. No, it wouldn't make sense if there were also, NBC and CBS affiliates there as well. From what I understand, it's just a small market luanching pad for college graduates looking to learn in the biz. Hey, some stay around a while...become anchors, or they can move on to bigger and better things. Isn't that usually the case everywhere in small to mid-size mkts??

You are right, KAIT is a good launching pad for people in college. there are a few anchors and reporters there that are really good and that should not be still in jonesboro. but there is one producer in particular that is so stuck up its not even funny and then you of course have your male anchor who is so full of him self he makes everyone around him miserable and then you have the stupid reporter/nightside anchor who is a complete ditz. if you can look past all of that, and the fact that the pay sucks, then you may enjoy workin there.

Hey, but didn't Jonesboro give Little Rock Melissa Simas and Liz Massey?

It can't be all bad.

Oh, yeah, it can.

Sorry!!!

BUT KAIT IS THE ONLY THING PROTECTING THE PEOPLE FROM...

THE WINTER STOOOOOOOOOORM!!!!!!!!!

Sad thing though....

KAIT had full power Digital Television before KATV.

For the poster that said the J'boro DMA shouldn't exist, I call BS on that. Yes, it fills the gap between Memphis, Little Rock, Springfield MO, and The Cape/Paducah, and there are more than the average number of DNS subs on D* and E*, but its still an actual market. There are some even smaller (ie Alpena MI, Fairbanks AK, etc)

Jonesboro is a pretty cool town. It deserves it's own coverage. Memphis and Little Rock could care less about Jonesboro, but the areas around Jonesboro and ASU do care and KAIT takes care of that. Little Rock, Ft. Smith, NWA are all about the same. Not too much to brag about in any of our BIG cities. If you don't believe me, just read the entries all over this blog. All anyone does is complain about the other stations and how much they all suck. Guess that means they all suck huh?

By the way...little off the subject, but Jonesboro has been the best radio market in Arkansas for years.

It would be a damn shame if Kait 8 was not on air - it has the best newscast, weather cast, etc. of any station in Arkansas.

If the stations in Little Rock and all the "big" cities are so wonderful why are there so many bad comments posted about them on this blog? It is unreal!!

Bigger is not always better!!

None of the meterologists at the "big stations" come in close to being as wonderful as Ryan Vaughn; Bob Snell and Craig Rickert are awesome on the news!!

So you big city stations, stay in Little Rock and Memphis, us folks in Northeast Arkansas are proud to call KAIT 8 are station!!!

Thanks to those that had nice comments to say about NEA. I'll admit that for those that love the big city life and hard news, this is NOT the market to work in!

However, it's a great place for people to launch their career and it's a great place for people to raise a family (like myself). The Little Rock and Memphis stations do some great work, but they don't cover NEA and I don't blame them... They have enough news in their own markets. It's a small market just like many others of simlar size. It makes money and that is why WMC has not gobbled it up. With the ratings that KAIT carries in NEA and SEMO, it will be here for a long time.

Have a great day everyone!

KAIT is greatly appreciated in Northeast Arkansas. For those without cable or satellite it is a wonderful.

Like many small markets (and college towns), it is a great place to learn the ropes of the business and how to function without all the bells and whistles many larger markets have. It is a wonderful place to get experience before moving on to larger and/or better markets. I bet if you contacted ex-KAITers, each one will have many stories and credit KAIT with the chance for their start in the biz.

I currently work in a larger market in the Midwest, but I grew up in Region 8, and I have to say KAIT puts out a great product. I usually watch them over the Memphis and Little Rock stations whenever I go home. I have watched them grow since the early 80s and they keep getting better and better. Anyone from the area remember Terry Wood from back in the day? Ryan does an excellent job at keeping the area informed of severe weather, weather that Memphis or Little Rock might otherwise ignore since it is on the fringe of their DMA.

Keep up the good work KAIT...NEA and SE MO appreciate your work and dedication..

I started off working at KAIT while i was in school and i went from being a camera operator to a director in about a year or so and now i work in little rock. the reason i feel like i was able to get a job in LR was because of all the training and experience that i got while i was at KAIT.

And, as far as the escalator story goes...

The first person to ride an elevator in Jonesboro (in the early 1930's) was asked to be the first to ride the escalator.

It's called a feature piece. And it was pretty good, and got a good response.

Folks, the television affiliaties in Northwest Arkansas are some of the worst I've ever seen anywhere. The combonation of KAIT and Arkansas State University's excellent broadcasting school produces much better results.

Plus, NEA has a good population base - other then Paragould and Jonesboro, you have several hundred thousand folks in the viewing area that stretches all across North Central Arkansas and into Southeast Missouri.

KAIT has and will continue to cover local news. The key word in that statement is “local” I have on several occasions turned on the Little Rock or Memphis news and couldn’t even get the weather for our area. At least I know I can turn to KAIT and hear about what is happening here. We very seldom hear about someone being beaten, raped or murdered on our local news but I can turn to Memphis or L.R if I wanted to hear about that I guess.
