Fort Smith Radio Host Headed to KFSM

This from an e-mailer: "KWHN-AM morning host Darren Bobb is headed to KFSM-TV. The following job posting came from KWHN Program Director Gary Elmore (his partner on "Arklahoma AM")

We have a rare opening at KWHN as our current co-host has gone on to become anchor and managing editor for the CBS TV affiliate in town.
Therefore, Clear Channel Fort Smith, Arkansas is looking for a Morning co-host for our top rated news talk station, KWHN. Duties also include Assistant PD, remote broadcasts, and commercial production, plus. If you are a team player, please send demo, references and resume to garyelmore@clearchannel.com

Clear Channel Radio is an equal opportunity employer. Women and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Looks like he'll slide alongside Bridget at 5, 6, and 10."

finally kfsm does something right. hiring a local & already well known and popular radio personality is unusally smart for them. i think he actually used to be in tv and has worked previously at ch 5?

good. i'm glad he's moving in the anchor chair. bridget has carried the show by herself for a while like real women do, but it helps to have some balance.
surely, she did a great job by herself, but it's good to see she'll finally get a little relief at the desk. he did used to work at kfsm before ... i think as a producer or somethin. but bridget worked with him and they got along very well. so, that should work well for the new couple.

Darren was at KTCS for a number of years before going to Channel 5 as I believe an assistant news director or executive producer. Something of that nature... He later went to KWHN in 2003 or 2004 maybe??

He is a very well liked and good man with a lot of connections. I think as long as he is in the newsroom over there, you'll continue to see Fort Smith properly represented in the market's television newscasts.

And yep, Ted did predict snow "on the mountain peaks." What was that all about?

Oh, and new owners always come in and shake up #1 stations. Yeah right. #2 or #3, maybe. But to answer your question, things are pretty calm. A few people have moved on, but to bigger positions.

I seem to remember seeing sleet video out of NW AR last week....at least he called for winter precipitation. There were also reports out of Bella Vista of a little wet snow and sleet.

Since when did Bella Vista become a "Mountain Peak". 40/29 and their snow coverage, thought it would be better with Salser gone, I guess Drew and Ted and bringing back the WINTER STTOORRRMMMM!

At 10:07 AM, October 16, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Let me get this straight... Sleet video means a forecast of "snow on the mountain peaks" was accurate????

Wow. I guess that means a summer shower is the same as a hurricane?

Besides, are there really peaks in the Ozarks?

Darren deserves it. He's been in Fort Smith for 22 years and knows the news. It'll be good to have someone on TV with both sides of his face working at the same time. He said some wet snow flakes would be possible, he never said it would stick or accumulate. There's a big difference, go back to running tapes for the newscast.

Good question. I didn' think sleet could come in any other form other than pellets....of ice that is.

Are you serious, number three, that Bridget did/does a great job. I like the lady but the woman can barely read the teleprompter and you can certainly tell when she as the end of a line when she hesitates mid sentence. I think that she's more than capable to do a better job than she is but she's not proving it. As much as I like her, I think pretty much any of the other talent at that station does a much better job anchoring than she does. Who does she know that keeps her so protected?

TV STATION OWNERS'S MANUAL
In the beginning, mgt will tell staff that there will be no changes to assure a smooth transition. Then.....

1. Fire Gen Mgr. Replace with GSM promoted from within station group.
2. Fire News Director. Replace with ND (or EP) from within station group.
3. Fire talent. Let new ND hire replacements to build "his/her team".
4. Fire GSM. Replace with LSM from within station group.

I'm not in the news or T.V. business at all. I moved here from the Dallas area a couple of years ago. While I know you can't compare a big market like that with the NWA market, as a "consumer", I should be able to enjoy newscast without thinking I'm listening to 4th graders reading in a "Dick and Jane" manner.

Also, KFSM should use spell check! I didn't watch the whole newcast but I counted at least two words spelled incorrectly. Some words might be understandably misspelled, but, c'mon, "Church" spelled, "Chruch" and not be caught by someone???? Things like this do NOTHING for newcomers/visitors perception of the region. I love it here and I know that all the local stations can do better than they are.

To be clear, I think Bridget can improve. I'm sorry that she's had to "do it all herself". However, I seem to remember several people in her spot in the evenings that performed like pros.

At 11:19 AM, October 18, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You know, if 5 is soooooo bad, what does that say about the other two stations?

KFSM dominates the ratings in both households and demos. It wasn't that way two years ago.

The excuse from the other stations used to be that the diary samples were bad. Then there were no excuses. Now there's an unreasonable hope that new owners will come in and turn a #1 station topsy turvy.

If we are so bad, why don't you just beat us and prove it. We're waiting (and waiting, and waiting, and waiting).

At 11:45 AM, October 18, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

A VHF competing with 2 UHF's will almost always come out ahead in Nielsens. There are rare exceptions, but typically because of signal a VHF will win HH's. And I get the whole "split market" mentality, cable/dish penetration, etc. A V almost always beats a U. SO the real scorecard is: what newscast is more relevant to viewers? A newscast can not be judged simply by demos or hh #s.

At 12:55 PM, October 18, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I would just say that watching the "ratings race" among the local stations is much like watching the special olympics. You're heart goes out the participants but it's a far cry from watching the real thing.

At 1:34 PM, October 18, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

"SO the real scorecard is: what newscast is more relevant to viewers? A newscast can not be judged simply by demos or hh #s."

NOPE, WRONG! In case you've just entered the TV business, ratings ARE everything. You can have the best product in the world but if no one is watching WhoT.F. cares?

At 1:53 PM, October 18, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If a newscast is more relevant to the viewers, it will win. That's how you determine whether it is relevant or not.

If it is not relevant to them, they will not watch.

KFSM wins that competition, in a hard battle with 40/29.

At 2:37 PM, October 18, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

By the way, "MCO person" is an improper description.

"MCO" means "Master Control Operator."

Using your terminology, "MCO person" would mean "Master Control Operator Person."

Oh, and there are no Master Control Operators (or Master Control Operator Persons) at KFSM. The station is operated from a central digital facility in Virginia.

At 4:17 PM, October 18, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Appreciate your thoughts, 1:34P. I don't agree, but I respect your opinion. I would suggest that a station with limited signal coverage can have as high (or higher) quality newscast than a station that pulls larger ratings because of signal strength. You can have a very "relevant" newscast, but that doesn't mean every potential viewer is able to receive it in their homes. In fact, from an advertisers standpoint, it is much more important to reach the "right" viewers than just the "most" viewers.

Way to go Darren! Best thing KFSM has done in a long time.

Just image sake, couldn't his "professional name" be Ricky Bobby to attract the NASCAR segment? ;-) Seriously, though, you insiders obviously no more about this news stuff than I do. I'm "just a consumer". However, all the stations need to make a quantum leap forward and look/act like a major market. From what most of you are saying, "Ricky Bobby" is not going to help in accomplishing that.

First off good move by KFSM by getting Bobb. I can't believe people on here taking shots at Bridget Schultz.

Enough of the Ashley Beck mentions, she is a good looking woman, but not the best thing since sliced bread geez. I would take Tiffany Stewart or Sara Lasure over her.
