KTHV Heads the Pack in the AM and at 10pm; KATV Dominates Early Evenings

Arkansas Business.com has the ratings numbers from the Novemeber 2005 book. Below is a portion of that article:

> At 5 p.m., KTHV was hoping the addition of “Ellen” would cut into KATV’s “Oprah” lead-in audience, but a 1.5 rating and 4.9 share for DeGeneres barely competed with Winfrey’s 8 rating and 26 share at 4 p.m. The result is KATV’s dominating 13.6 rating and 31 share, compared with third-place KTHV’s 5.6 rating and 12.9 share. Second-place KARK recorded a 7.6 rating and 17.6 share.

> At 6 p.m. it’s more of the same for KATV, which drew a 15.5 rating and 29 share. KTHV overtook KARK for second place with an 8.2 rating and 15.5 share, compared with Channel 4’s 6.4 rating and 12.1 share.

> At 10 p.m., KTHV and KATV are nearly deadlocked, with Channel 11 holding an 11.5 rating and a 24.9 share and Channel 7 registering an 11 rating and 24.8 share. Channel 4 pulled in a 6.7 rating and a 14.8 share.

> KLRT-TV, Channel 16’s “Fox News at Nine” again showed improvement in comparison with this time last year, posting a 3.4 rating and a 6.3 share. Fox held just a 4.0 share in the November 2004 Nielsen ratings.

And KTHV is still holding on to the top spot in the 5am and 6am time slots.

OMG.. Would someone please evaluate the demos. That's what sales is most interested in. You may be surprised to see who's leading the pack in that department. Of course KATV is leading the 5:00 and 6:00 slots. That's because hard work from years past put them there. It will take a long time for them to fall just because of viewer habit.

The headline should read that KATV drops to third place in the morning behind KTHV and KARK. It should also read that KTHV and KATV viewership falls at 10:00 despite and increase in CBS and ABC viewers. This as KARK gains local news viewers despite a decrease in NBC viewership. It's also important to note that KTHV has apparently stopped the downward spiral of it's 5:00 "news". I agree with the above poster. Take a look at the demos and see who's really celebrating. Oh Fox 16, what happened to those stronger numbers you were touting over the summer months when ABC, CBS and NBC were running reruns. Oh, I guess network lead-ins do matter. Don't forget the weekend ratings... KTHV down and KARK up, despite weak NBC programming and KATV up thanks in part to Desperate Housewives.

PLEASE TELL THE REAL STORY NEWSPAPER FOLKS, DON'T JUST GIVE THE HIGHLIGHTS LIKE YOU ACCUSE TV PEOPLE OF DOING ALL THE TIME.

KATV does well with the early newscasts simply due to the older viewers (espcially in South Arkansas) going back to the pre-cable era. Same with KARK's numbers. Remember, KARK wasn't the dog they are now (overall, not speaking of the the news area) and KTHV was draggin' the rear for the longest. My how the mighty have truly fallen. Rick Rogota's TBOD fiasco just puts icing on the cake.

Demos may be what ad people care about but i think they're smart by using the HH numbers to get a general idea of what people are watching.

But you can't please everyone. at least that outtakes column is the only print in town that does anything with the ratings.

i bet fox will be happy when american idol starts again soon

If you really want to get the issue stirred up, then talk about Little Rock becoming a metered market. Or you could ask the sales managers to explain just how the Neilsen formula works to determine these numbers. It's a total rip off. A metered market would turn these stations upside down. The winner? The advertiser. They would no longer have to rely on some local A.E.'s uneducated B.S. when it comes to explaining just who the best station is. How many times has a local advertiser heard this? We're #1 at 5p. We're #1 at 6p. etc.. It's pathetic.

If you don't think meters would turn this market upside down, then go ask KENS in San Antonio...Long time number until meters showed they were not.

This will never become a metered market because KATV will never agree to it. All of the stations must consent in order for a market to become metered - KATV is too scared to find out what viewers are really watching.

That's a low blow, Burgundy. You know those numbers are skewed. They don't include things like... households with more than two televisions... things of that nature.

Stop hiding behind those phony numbers!!!

Beth Hunt rules in the AM on Channel 7!!!!!!

Apparently Beth Hunt does not rule in the AM, the ratings are behind THV.

Didn't you know that selling tv requires an MBA from Harvard? How dare you accuse an AE of BS. They didn't all go to Harvard to learn how to BS. They are all so professional and educated.

Wait a second...you're saying Win Noble doesn't equal ratings?

(hearty laugh after last post)

you gotta be kidding.

Selling requires that you be willing to do anything to get the sale, including:

1 Screwing over fellow AE's for accounts.
(I claimed that account 7 years ago!!!!... it's mine, mine mine dammitt!))
2. Have a bulldog mentality.
3. Drink as often as you can, and smoke a lot of cigarettes.
4. And if you work at KATV, LIE about your ratings, and drop your pants to make a buck.

If you think this is an attractive job description, you could work in TV sales at one of the local stations

Oh I almost forgot. BS, BS, BS, BS BS...

Have a nice day

Note to Randy Dixon: If you want a better morning show: Get Rid of Melinda Mayo, Steve Powell, Beth Hunt, Jason Pederson. Consider bringing in Robyn Richardson, Tracey Douglas, Beth Ward, Ron Sherman, Ray Tucker. Get a solid producer so the anchors can come in at 4:55a, do the show and get out of there. Mix in Jason Harper for the younger element. Viewers watch KTHV for 2 reasons: 1. Robyn Richardson because she connects with the viewer. 2. They don't have any other options. Your current team does not connect with the viewer. They're nice enough - but just can't cut it. Melinda is too country, Steve is too plump white man with brown hair. He's been around too long with no REAL results. Beth Hunt doesn't have the personality.
These people are all good "folks" as we like to say in Arkansas, but they're not working for you.

I must say to the previous post, Robyn is not the only reason I watch THV in the morning. Tom has the best personality of any news or weather anchor in this market. If he left, I would not watch. Yes, I like Robyn, but she doesn't carry the show. Not only does Tom have the personality, he is "good folks" as well.

You know what would be GREAT for a morning show? A media babe car wash. Sometime this August... get all the hot media babes with T-shirts and short-shorts.... just let them wash cars for two hours. The people would watch !

no.... only pervs like you would watch.

I'm not sure one would consider Tom Brannon having a "good personality." He's a very nice guy, but comes across insecure on air. His non eye contact in the camera shows that he's isn't comfortable. He thinks he's funny, but many viewers don't get it, they just want their weather. Again, nice guy, but I'm not sure they watch the show because of him. He has a great voice just a little insecure.

Trust me, Tom is not insecure. And yes, he is a very nice guy.
