KTVE in Monroe, LA Getting Makeover

Source: RTNDA Working with top newscast designers, RTNDA is providing KTVE-TV in Monroe, LA, with a new on-air look, including a reinvigorated set with new music and graphics, plus the know-how to put it all together.

Chip Mahaney, producer of RTNDA's Ultimate Newscast Makeover and managing editor at KDFW FOX 4 News in Dallas, says "We picked the perfect partner in KTVE. This is a station with a long history of public service in northern Louisiana and southern Arkansas. It's also a station that has fallen behind. But with new station management in place, and with the RTNDA Ultimate Newscast Makeover team on the way, we expect to create an immediate, significant and positive change for news viewers in that market."

KTVE will be getting a new or refurbished set from FX Group, new custom music from Stephen Arnold Music, and new custom graphics from VDO. And it's getting the expertise of The Coaching Company, which will help integrate the new design elements and new technology into its newscasts, and train KTVE staffers to make best use of what they'll have to work with.

now if they could get their Sports Director a life they would have a winner. They have WAY to many holes to stop the sinking on that ship. I watched both stations in Monore onw week, and I can tell you the cbs station does a much better job and the numbers don't lie. Things to get rid of: Main young anchor, SPORTS DIRECTOR, El dorado element. WEAK STATION

I was a KTVE employee (based in El Dorado) for 2 1/2 years in the early 90's. KTVE paid for the advice of RTNDA back then too, but the news division has always been #2 in a two station market.
I have always felt Channel 10 did a better job than Channel 8 (KNOE), but we could never catch them for three main reasons: 1. The loyalty of older viewers who favored CBS and KNOE (I think they were on the air first...definitely based in Monroe first), 2. A lot of the diaries are filled out by viewers in the southern part of the DMA, where KTVE's reception is not as good, which brings us to 3. The split market factor. KTVE's tower is in Union County because El Dorado is the original city of license for the station (same reason why KATV's tower is in Jefferson county...Pine Bluff is the original city of license). You can't abandon the "El Dorado element" as the first poster puts it, and the fact is people in Monroe and NE Louisiana don't want to see south Arkansas news and vice versa.
Even members of my own family didn't really watch my reports until I started working at KATV, which is big across south Arkansas.
The employees work hard and I wish KTVE all the best and hope the fancy new set and music and graphics can turn the tide. But its more like a tsunami they are facing.

KTVE has done a great job with what they've been given... nothing!
They've got a strong lead female anchor in Jenifer Andrews (formerly of KTAL) and a Chief Meteorologist who has been there for over 15 years, the only live Doppler, and a 2-hour morning show, but that's it. Everything else they have, KNOE has, including KTVE's former main anchor.
KTVE is also plagued with technical problems. The signal from the tower east of El Dorado has horrible ghosting that apparently engineers don't know how to fix. Many viewers simply don't watch KTVE because the picture is so bad.
KTVE staffers have got to be excited about this huge news for them. This is the first time they've had a new set since the current set was built in the early 90s. They got a new building a few years ago, and now they'll have the out-of-this-world newscast to blow people away in the Ark-La-Miss.
Good luck KTVE, I hope you finally get to #1, you guys sure do deserve it.

I worked in the Monroe market not long ago, and to say KTVE is good and deserve to be #1 is going alittle far. Jennifer Andrews is hard to look at, and I don't care if the new set is from space. KNOE has a 48 share and has been a strong #1 for more than 50 years. KNOE is a dump, they have nothing new, but they kick ass on live shots, stories, sports, YOU NAME IT. You think KTVE can make the move this year? They do have new live trucks, a new station, new news director, and now a new set? NO MORE EXCUSESS.

I too worked recently worked in the market and the content on KTVE is much better than KNOE. KNOE just gives Ken Booth a photog and lets him do 7 minute packages with no SOTs.

KTVE has better reporters and photogs, producing better stories and packages that don't drag on for 4 minutes.

If the rumor is true that Ken Booth and John Denison are on their way out, KTVE may have a real chance for #1.

Let me guess...you worked a KTVE. Funny you mention Ken Booth he has been gone for 3 weeks and John Denison quit KTVE because it sucked their so bad and moved to KNOE. And which reporter is better? the little gay black guy or the manly looking chicks?? Or is it the anchor with acne? I agree that the photogs are much better, but content is worse. It's an AP story station, or a catch-up after KNOE runs a story station. I also agree with above poster that the Sports at KTVE is VERY BAD. Knoe had 16 AP awards and KTVE had ZERO. The ratings are so lopsided that once the tower fell in 1996 and KNOE went to black and still had a 42 share.

Actually, when the tower fell in 1996, KTVE let KNOE use their microwave receive site at Cablevision to get KNOE back on the air.

The ratings in the Monroe / El Dorado market have nothing to do with the quality of the product, but everything to do with family tradition.

It's market 135, what do you expect, a flawless newscast?

Old reruns of Friends beat KTVE from time to time. Watch a newscast and see how many times packages go to black or a mic is off or a live shot's sound is off, then tell me how sweet it is to watch KTVE. Tradition, your right people like to see stories thatou can understand, it's a long tradition that KNOE has been doing forever. Nothing will change with a new set. or station, or live trucks. The anchors are bad and the stories are old wire stories. I DARE KTVE TO DIG UP A STORY.

Randell Camm is an idoit - will not cause any waves in Ouachita Parish - so KTVE will again be in the cellar!

All KNOE has to do is be there and they beat the heck out of any coverage of real news in the market in Ouachita Parish.

I wish they would do something with the El Dorado bureau. It was really the El Dorado station, until the 1980's. The call letters on the El Dorado studio don't light up anymore. Please redo the El Dorado bureau

KTVE was good when it was an El Dorado station. The only reason why the KTVE studio still exist here is because their FCC license comes through this studio. I remembered, Clay Scott, Gary Syber, Tommy Bush, John Ralston, Mike Dumas, Skip Kendall and Dale Butler. They all made the KTVE team.

If you can't sell the El Dorado studio, please give it a make over too. We need your support in El Dorado as well.

They should put up photo's of Dale Nicholson, B.J. SAms, Clay Scott and Tommy Bush. This is where KTVE got its beginning. I was on THe Colonel Clay Show in 1964. My brother and I came dressed as Batman & Robin. We won The Giant Tootsie Roll, for our costumes. Likewise Tommy Bush was Bozo The Clown. I was a Bozo fan and I got to be on the show. KTVE should have remained in El Dorado. Monroe took it away from us.
