Movin' and Shakin' in NWA
This from the tip box:
"James Hudzinski, weekend meteorologist at KFSM is leaving to work for Weather Central after November sweeps. He will serve as installer/trainer for the Weather Central Genesis Graphics system."
"Weekend meteorologist Derek Beasley at KHBS-KHOG in Fort Smith is moving to Hearst-Argyle sister station WLWT in Cincinnati, OH (DMA #34) as morning and midday meteorologist at the end of November sweeps."
"KHBS-KHOG Sports Reporter and Anchor Rusty Jackson is leaving 40/29 to head to KATV in Little Rock. His start date is December 5."

KATV need another sports guy?
a round of applause goes out to mr. rusty jackson. he deserves whatever KATV offered him and then some!!! way to go Rusty!!!!
agreed...good guy...works hard.
How old is he? Who is he?
If he really is a good guy and works hard ... KATV is not the right place for him.
Who's leaving KATV? Is Justin Acri going to do full time radio now?
Will Acri take his neck with him???
Rusty certainly deserves the job... I personally think he is the best sports guy in NWA. From my understanding, he will primarily be doing news reporting and maybe some occasional sports. GO RUSTY...He'll do well.
What neck?
I wonder when Randy is finally going to hire some african-american talent. I guess Pam and Jessica are all he's going to let into the gate as long as he's at the helm. Idiot!
Oh, this must be Leland's replacement. Is that right?
Pam is good.... Jessica isn't.
That sports girl at KARK beats both KATV women put together !
hiYaay Rusty and congratulations to Derek Beasley.
Both of them will surely be missed.
Beasley was the best weatherman at 40/29. Much better than the pompous Chief Meteorologist Charles Sal...ser.
chief meteorooooooooooooologist, charles sallllllllllser
Way to go Derek... that's a nice market jump. Hope everything works out well for you in Cincinnati. Congrats on your CBM by the way.
Hudzinski will be missed too, they should fire that annoying brad flickabooger guy though
What's wrong with Flickinger? I think he's pretty good. I'd much rather watch him than VERY annoying Salser anyday.
James will be missed as well.
Rusty and Derek leaving...
ABOUT TIME!
I can't stand watching 40...they seem to pick the WORST on-air talents.
I agree...Salser must go...I want to throw things when he goes on air...
I think Rusty and Derek do an excellent job...if they are so BAD, why don't you let us see YOUR work? Could you do any better?
Apparently the people that matter think they have talent....Rusty jumping 47 market sizes and Derek jumping 70 market sizes. I don't think that's too shabby at all. Kudos to both, you'll be missed.
Is it true that Salser still signs everything with his "Chief Meteorologist" title? As in...
Merry Christmas,
Charles Salser
Chief Meteorologist
How about getting rid of Jason Dollard at KNWA? AWFUL! I also loved how they went to color bars in the middle of their morning show last week - for over 10 minutes. Of course, we've come to expect this from KNWA. I was so upset that I missed "Mr. Food." Classy . . . . .
i dont care about any of the weather people. they all are pretty annoying except Lewis. Salser and Flickinger have super annoying nasaly voices and smiles and both seem to lack much weather forecasting ability either. i remember hearing salser predicting a foot of snow and we saw nada.
"Weather people" may be annoying to you, but I can guarantee that you turn the tv on to get the forecast, no matter who delivers it...or do you do your own forecasting? That's what I thought.
I get mine from the internet, so I don't hear anyone...what do you THINK about that.
That's what I thought.
And where to you think the internet forecast come from? METEOROLOGISTS just like the ones on TV. Educate yourself before you speak next time.
METEOROLOGISTS just like the ones on TV? i dont mean to jump into your little fray but i do believe that a lot of TV mets are much less educated than nws mets. I do not think anyone can deny that. tv mets just take what nws mets say and tweak it a little. now some tv mets are highly skilled forecasters but all nws are. some tv mets dont even have a degree, or have a degree in something other than met.
maybe you should educate yourself before YOU speak next time.
Again... ignorance is bliss. True enough.. There are some tv meteorologists that have no degree in meteorology and there are some that do.
For your information there are meteorologists in the NWA TV market that ACTUALLY have degrees in meteorology.
1. Rick Katzfey: Univ of Kansas
2. Charles Salser: Air Force
3. Drew Michaels: Northern Illinois
4. Derek Beasley: Univ of Oklahoma
5. Brad Flickinger: Univ Of Oklahoma
6. Garrett Lewis: Miss State
NWS mets have degrees from those schools, with the expection of Mississippi State, which is not a calculus and physics-based program (which is a requirement for the NWS)
So you are telling me that the above people aren't as qualified as meteorologists in the NWS?
Do your research on the meteorology programs at these schools.
I know several of the meteorologists in the Fayetteville Fort Smith market, and trust me: they don't copy the NWS.
Can you spell disaster? I can.. N-A-T-I-O-N-A-L W-E-A-T-H-E-R S-E-R-V-I-C-E
Most take pride in developing thier own forecast whether they're from OU, MSU, or AF. While their personalities are all different most are very good at forecasting.
I personally know Rusty and Derek both and think it is an EXCELLENT move for both of them. To be able to jump so many spots to a higher market is an incredible step that most personalities work several years for.
For instance, Rusty Jackson, started a few years ago as just a news photographer, but after each newscast would practice doing sports, eventually got the job and is now going to the top tv station in the state.
As for Derek, someone who has worked so long doing something he loves, he has shown to be someone who has the dedication to fulfill a lifelong destiny.
Unfortunately, his storm chasing may be cut back a little bit in Cincinnati.
It takes a lot to go on air everyday and have thousands of people critique your work. I think Rusty, Derek, Charles, Brad, and all the talent at the Fort Smith and Fayetteville studios at all of the stations have talent. Remember, it is market 104...a lot of people get their start there...plus, even the best of on air talent are still learning.
Hearst Argyle isn't going to hire garbage..unlike some of the other ownership companies in the Ft Smith/Fayetteville market. This has become a great feeder market for Hearst, and they like to farm out talent across their many stations.
Hearst Argyle is garbage
Quote: "Hearst-Argyle is garbage."
There are some ignorant people on this message board.
I agree, whoever posted the "hearst is garbage" comment likely works for Death Star, oh excuse me, Nexstar. Freudian slip I guess.....
Nexstar is garbage
Parker Gavigan and the other old guy at KNWA are both good reporters. i have no clue why they're both still at that station.
Yes, Chief Meteorologist Salser never really was a fan.
D. Beasley (D-Beez) was cool he will be missed.
However no one will be Jay Hilgartner he was the best, I miss him very much, ah the good ol' days of Guy, Bur, and Jay.
KHOG needs to get rid of a lot of their TV "talents" absolutely terrible.
Who specifically is terrible? I like how these people sit an criticize people about how "bad" they are as if they are the GODSEND of broadcasting...let's see your work. Armchair quarterbacks.....
From what I have read here, there is a consensus that noone cares for Chief Meteorologist Charles Salser.
There are other people who work for KHBS/KHOG....don't generalize the station just because Charles Salser isn't overly liked...please name some others who don't qualify as "good" talent.
What about the ultimate blonde joke, Leslee Wright? She blabbers incessantly about herself, her life, her husband, even the damn shoes she bought when she left the Arkansas/USC game at half time! And what's up with the purchased hair? She looks nice, but no self-respecting station should trade out a by-line for hair extensions. Bald one day, then long blonde hair "provided by somebody" the next. Doesn't do much for her credibility.
Thanks for your comment, and for being so mature. It's one thing to talk about someone's journalistic ability, but it's another thing to make personal attacks about talent.
The question was: "who specifically is terrible?"
The question was NOT: "who do you dislike and why?"
who as khbs/khog sux? well the new sports director, of course their main anchor craig whatever is a staple answer for that question, drew the weather guy is lame-o..i could go on and on but its too boring. of course the other stations arent much better. tim malone at kfsm isnt any better than craig but hes alright for the over 80 we love you station

I'll go out on a limb and say you work for 24/51. I can expect your negativity especially working for a company like Nexstar. Do you enjoy getting trounced in the ratings every book? Oh I forgot, since your station is so elite, you don't subscribe to nielsen.

So who do you like? Let's see what kind of homer you really are.
Oh mercy, where do I begin...as I've worked at KHBS-KHOG once upon a time. Yes, I can agree that Craig must go. My reason for it is not personal, but I feel that he's lost a little of his reporting edge over the last year. This gentleman could leave our novice reporters (and even Hearst reporters) in the dust on a story as he would research a topic very carefully and could present insight into the story. He did this when US troops went into Iraq the second time.
A second person I believe is past her Expiration date is Leslee Wright. Don't get me wrong, she is good at reporting (tough issues, not cheesy back-to-school topics), but I notice a bit of tension between her and Craig during the 5 and 6 p.m. shows. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems the chemistry of anchors should be stronger than what a viewer sees on air. Leslee is a very professional woman and a bit silly, when she's off air (Remember your promo Leslee about wanting to have "Rock hard abs like Janet Jackson?")I just think that maybe she's trying too hard to have the on-air chemistry that Megan McHale and Craig had on-air. Maybe it's just me, but there is always the alternative of getting rid of the news director...(grins)
I really don't care for 40/29 after the current changes I just hope they replace those good talents with something comparable. I miss Megan McHale and even her hubby Pete Gilbert. Leslee Wright makes herself look goofy commenting on stories, Craig Cannon I feel sorry for him. I really never liked Charles Salser he comes off as phony to me, I do like him better than Steve Gibbs. The only thing I like about 40/29 is Tiffany Stewart, she seems nice at least in the e-mail she replied to me with. I am a KFSM viewer primarily I have always liked the talent in all departments overall. I love this site keep up the good work.
That is interesting that you say that Charles Salser seems phony, because EVERYONE I talk to says that about that man. I have even heard stories about him being rude to people when he is in public, which would be the exact opposite of the jolly man you see on the air.
The thing that annoys me the most about him is that voice. There is no way he speaks that way off-air. The smile and the voice are about as phony as you can get. I remember back when he did morning and weekends and he wasn't like that at all. He's a good meteorologist, I just wish he'd lose the voice and the goofy smile.
so with Salser's overall support, ha ha. What does 40/29 do, go a different route? What do the viewers think.......
"Maybe it's just me, but there is always the alternative of getting rid of the news director..."
I can tell you that ND Mike Courington at 40/29 isn't going anywhere.....I don't think you can compare Leslee to Megan McHale. Two very different personalites...but both can go live and report the big story. Leslee is very well connected within the community across NW AR, and that's a huge plus for 40/29. We all know Craig will leave on his own terms. 40/29 dominates the ratings across NW AR...so why change what's working?
I understand that Craig will leave on his own terms (or they find him passed out at the age of 90 in his desk), but Currington has got to go as he's brash, crude and frankly a pain to deal with. They could get the assignment manager Anthony Yates to take his place. He's been in the business from all sides and could help keep the station on top in ratings. BTW--I love seeing Melissa Kelly on the weekends when Tiffany is off for the night.
Being "brash" as you say has nothing to do with getting the news to the viewers....he's not in the public eye...that's the talent's job. Maybe you're having trouble telling the difference between brash and aggressive. He gets the job done.
Obviously one of Currington's supporters. He does the hiring and firing, but his methods are anything but conventional. He needs to move on to Oklahoma City so he can be with his beloved Sherrie Brown.
If you're going to be talking bad about the man, you could at least spell his name right!
"Obviously one of Currington's supporters. He does the hiring and firing, but his methods are anything but conventional. He needs to move on to Oklahoma City so he can be with his beloved Sherrie Brown."
I was hired by Sherrie, and I can tell you from first hand experience that she's a dedicated hard working ND...fitting that Mike grew and was mentored by Sherrie.
Melissa Kelly is the best thing on Arkansas TV. She should be the night anchor. A fan.
40/29 New Director Mike Courington has got to go. He's running that station into the ground. He's already run all the talent out of that station. He's asst. ND Brett Austin would not be a good succesor either. Anthony Yates gets my vote.
Thank you for this post, really worthwhile data.
Thank you for the article, very useful piece of writing.
