Big Announcement Coming Soon From KNWA; Station Establishing a Benton County Bureau

This from the tip jar: "KNWA running promo about "Big Announcement" set for Sept 2. Believe it is a bureau opening in Benton County. NOTE: All stations in the market had bureaus in Benton County in the early 90's. They all pulled out by '96 when 40/29 closed theirs up."

UPDATE: A poster in the comments section adds this: "Yes, it is a Benton Co. bureau; Sydney and Tom (married) will be the reporters; they are currently living in Benton County."

Ah, yes, I remember 29/40's Kurt Jefferson, whose voice was an octave lower on tape than it was live. One day, after a fire at a mercury-switch plant in Bentonville, the fire chief had a presser. Noting that some firefighters' helmets had melted when the fire flashed over, Jefferson asked if the fire had been especially hot. The chief replied, "Kurt, all fires are hot."

Yes, Kurt had a knack for stating the obvious. Hard-working individual. Probably his biggest score was when Sam Walton granted him the exclusive regarding his cancer treatments. Actually, most of the stations in Joplin had bureaus in BenCo prior to 1990 or so - because Benton County used to be part of the Joplin market.

Married reporters working from the same two person bureau sounds like a recipe for disaster to me. Who gets to take the on-call? What happens when they want "vacation" time? How about overnight spot news? Tom can shoot - can Sydney?
Who is the bureau chief? Is there one? Who's in charge?

This should actually be quite humorous to watch unfold on the air.

I can't wait! Will Sydney be able to shoot!? Will "Tom Try" Benton County!? Tune in and find out!

Awww.. Why did someone have to tell the room that they were getting photogs? This discussion was getting ridiculously funny!

Yes, but how many sets of gear and vehicles? Here's what happens - "Hey (someone in the main studio) is sick today. What do we do?"
"I know - call (fill in bureau staff's name here). He/she can come down and fill in." "And also file 3 VO's, a VOSOT and a Package?" "Sure!"

If Channel 5 is truely the leader in this market, then why is Channel 5 following KNWA's lead to open a Benton County Bureau. I think 5 and 40/29 is finally realizing that KNWA is leading the way to the future of this DMA.

Let me ask this - is Channel 5 truely going to invest money in to a Benton County Newsroom when they are "all about" Fort Smith news. I would rather take those dollars that they would spend on the new newsroom and update their look and get them out of the 70's!

What's next? A Crawford County bureau based in Alma?

The Nielsen book doesn't lie about who is the leader. (Unless you're working for Nexstar.) KFSM is strong in Fort Smith, KHOG is strong in NWA. KNWA is #3 and will remain there until signal issues are solved, talent levels are improved and content issues are dealt with. Put Don Elkins on 40/29 and he will own the market, because the supporting cast and equipment is so much stronger. KNWA must change the morning show - it's too weak and always has been. Win in the morning, win at night. Rarely does a station with a third rate morning show win at night.

Another real question is - where will 24/51 -- oops, they are KNWA now, aren't they? -- put the Benton County bureau? Will it truly be in the population center? Bentonville/Rogers? Or will it be someplace out of the way - like at JB Hunt or Garfield or someplace.

Is the KNWA Benton Co. Bureau based in Springdale? I know it sounds dumb but yellowpages.com has a KNWA-TV 51 listed in both Springdale and Fayetteville. Just thought I would throw that out there.

It's about time they open that bureau; 'been trying to open since last winter...Having worked with both Sydney and Tom, I think they'll make a great impact in Benton County; they work excellent together and compliment eachother rather well. KNWA is climbing up the ladder and ready to take over the DMA if they haven't done so already.
And yes, Syndey can shoot if she needs to! Show her which filter to use, and she's on her way.

I'd have to agree with this statement. I think that 40/29 and Channel 5, are begining to realize that they are no match for what KNWA has in store.

Are you trying to tell me that you think Hearst TV is no match for Nexstar?! This shows your lack of knowledge of the TV industry.
