Is this true?

Why not? After all Heverling has been real successful at keeping KNWA at their current level of mediocrity. Sounds like a good fit for KARK.

I am the last person to start a "war blog", and I do not mean to start anything, but I do have to say Rob Heverling is one of the best guys I have had the pleasure of meeting. Rob will do great what ever he chooses to do. Heverling is one of the best news directors that are out there. Rob has done GREAT work at KNWA.

I don't know this Rob guy, but I have heard good things about him. He's brought some good ideas and changes (name change to knwa and Razorback Nation) to the station.

However, he walked into quick sand. Arkansas NBC(now KNWA) is a third place station with a third place news operation and nobody is going to change that.

Rob and his entire crew at KNWA screwed themselves with the name change. For one thing you don't just change the call letters of the station and close the Fort Smith newsroom. First off, they are in a Fort Smith DMA. Second, by closing that newsroom, you are saying the the 80,000 people in FSM and 19,000 people in Van Buren don't matter and don't have any news that is important enough to broadcast. Just a thought, but you don't improve your numbers by locking 99,000 people out of news coverage. The growing population of NWA cannot make up for that. 99,000 just counts two cities. Forget all the small towns around FSM. One of the main reasons KFSM is #1 in the ratings, even with as bad as they are (no professionalism at all), is because the have a large news operation in FSM. They make sure that people know they're news is being covered. And even though KHBS/KHOG has a lot of focus on NWA they still have a good sized newsroom in FSM. Rob would not have been my choice for ND after the crap he pulled in Fayetteville. KARK is going to be worse off with him then they have ever been before.

Who cares about Fort Smith and everyone there? Northwest Arkansas has all the big money and growth.

At 12:48 PM, August 23, 2005, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Does money determine when news happens? I guess so because no one ever gets stabbed or shot or no companies ever do anything big in Fort Smith. Money does not determine where news happens. That's just a fact.

The above poster hasn't been around much, huh ?

If the Arkansas Razorbacks have practice... it's news. If Ft. Smith is swallowed in an earthquake... they'll announce new driving directions on how to get to the Razorback game.

The DMA is called the Ft. Smith area, but in the late 70's and early 80's Ft. Smith stations started to put full time newsrooms in NWA and even in Benton county...now everyone is moving up north. All the ad dollars are now in Washington and Benton county..do your research...Nexstar did. Craig C. (40/29) has moved to NWA because of the ad dollars and so 40/29 can have more of a present in NWA. FSM is dying and dying in ad dollars!!!

Rob will do a great job... He is a good guy and will continue to make KARK successful. He will face the same problem Rick Iler did and that is Nexstar. At this point the only thing that can bring KARK down is Nexstar.

its not a coincidence that when 40/29 moved cannon to nwa kfsm lost their commanding ratings lead. kfsm has decided to stick to their guns in fort smith because thats how they have been for over 50 years. unfortunately, the old people that watch chnnael 5 die and nobody in the younger generations watches 5.

I wonder when the DMA will split off into a seperate one for Fayetteville/NWA. I can forsee that in the future. Even KFSM installed their digital transmitter closer to Fayetteville, to capture the budding audience for HDTV.

Rob Heverling is a GREAT man, and he is doing a GREAT job at KNWA, so it would make sense to have him as news director at KARK, as well. KNWA is a 5 year old station...it takes time to build a viewership in a market where the other two stations have been active for decades. KNWA is catering to a growing area of the state. Benton County is growing by leaps and bounds, with Washington County growing commercially as well. Fort Smith is NOT growing, and already has two stations which garner multiple viewers, so by shifting to NWA only, KNWA has made a move which will prove beneficial down the road. As for Heverling, he will no doubt be successful in whatever endeavor he pursues.

the only concern i have is that nexstar will pull the plug on knwa before they can hit their stride.

After 5 years, KNWA still has hashmarks in certain shows. That's not growing, that's *sucking*

KFSM is and always will be a Fort Smith station. At some point they need to devote more attention to NWA.

Craig Cannon did not move to NWA to improve 40/29. He moved to Fayetteville to be closer to his buddy Aaron Peters, who subsequently has left the station.
It was Craig's choice not managements.

Don't know Heverling, I've heard he's a jerk to some. Much more worried about "brand" than content. The move to "KNWA" was being discussed prior to Nexstar purchasing the station. "Razorback Nation" - is that the best you got? Wow, that took about 5 minutes in a promotions meeting to develop. Craig Cannon moved to NWA following his divorce, not at management's direction. The Fay side will not split off - it would make it about market #170. Under Heverling and Nexstar, NWA is just a job opportunity for UA grads right out of school (or not even out of school yet).

khog and kfsm both hire a lot of u of a grads too.

KNWA is number 2 in Northwest Arkansas. 3 in Fort Smith.

At 10:46 AM, August 24, 2005, Anonymous Anonymous said...

no KNWA is not #2 in Northwest Arkansas. Even when you break the book down by regions (NWA-FSM), KNWA pulls in horrible numbers in NWA.

of course, KNWA wouldn't know this because they no longer subscribe to the ratings book.

and KNWA is in real danger of slipping to #4 in certain shows. Friends re-runs on Fox draws bigger numbers.

you're obviously a blind idiot. quit fooling yourself. 40/29 and 5 are the market leaders.

So why did Craig get divorced? I knew his daughter when I was in high school and she was a bitch. Wouldn't be surprised if she turned out to be a lesbo. She was a really good golfer. Was his wife the exact same?

leslee has had a speckled past when it comes to spouses. didnt she leave her first husband for bo mattingly?

Umm actually I have seen the numbers in NWA for KNWA, and no they are not slipping into 4th place. KNWA is number two in NWA. But good try you idiot!
BREAKING NEWS: I think Aaron Peters just hit another Tree! Better go rescue him from jail!

KNWA is #2 in which daypart, which demo, which geographic location? C'mon. If you're going to argue something, support it with facts. Which ratings book? Which sweeps period? How many diaries? Most TV people wouldn't last 6 months in the "real world" of business.

I worked with Heverling for three years, before his return to Arkansas.

Good guy to work for, a rock-solid person. Can get caught up in the "branding" (we had three different "brands" in three years...and that newsroom has since closed) instead of the reality of a small-market station, such as the number and quality of producers and shooters.

One of his on-air decisions regarding format made my job extremely difficult -- but I did understand he was trying to jumping a flatlining horse.

Not sure if I would work for him again, if the situation presented itself, but he was a straight shooter.

I have NEVER EVER heard the expression of "trying to jumping a flatlining horse".

What in the devil does that mean?
Revive a failing newscast? Three brands in three years isn't the way to do it.

No way should they get rid of Derek, he's very entertaining. He has more style than some seasoned weather people. At least he has a personality, unlike some.

Get rid of Ron Oliver at KARK.

Leslee Wright is a wench who cheated on her husband with Bo Mattingly then divorced him to marry somebody else she was sleeping with. She also is a horrible reporter and anchor and has an ego that she is better than everyone else. They should can her!
