KATV Photog Hocks Drone Tornado Destruction Video

Hmmmm....did anyone else pickup on this?  Seems KATV photographer Brian Emfinger is hocking his drone shot video for sale.  A comment on TV Spy pointed this out.

Good idea.

It's guys like him that are going to ruin it for all. He's done some real stupid and illegal stuff. I'm on his side as far as the FAA goes in that they have no enforceable right as far as commercial sales go but they do and will have enforceable laws concerning flying rc aircraft, which this is, and he has broken them consistently. KATV is damn fortunate he hasn't hurt someone or damaged property yet.

Sounds like somebody out there is jealous that KATV has this amazing video. Boo Hoo.

At 2:35 PM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Can he ask for people to pay him because wasn't he on company time? I guess the big question is who does the video belong to?

At 2:50 PM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It belongs to him. His camera, his cards, his drone. Company time has nothing to do with it.

At 2:55 PM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Not if he's on company time and I guarantee you he used the "I'm with channel 7" card to get in these areas. If the average person showed up with a quad and camera they'd get nowhere close. If he's profiting off this KATV will have no problem going after him in court and they'll win.

The lines are blurring. He has a KATV camera in one hand and his personal drone in the other. Sounds like he is trying to put his hands in 2 cookie jars at the same time.

At 3:45 PM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@2:55 He might have used that line, but they don't have to let him in any more than they do the average joe-smo. Channel 7 has no more legal right to be there than anyone else. So that card doesn't hold up. If KATV gave him the drone and camera to put on it, then they would have a case. It is my understanding that everything is his, so they don't.

I can't believe some of you are journalists and don't understand this stuff. According to some, because he is on company time he cannot collect a check for other any other services? That makes no sense whatsoever. If he has rental property, and people are living at his residence while he is working for channel 7, does 7 get to collect his rent check too? What if you sell your watch to a stranger on your smoke break? Does 7 get a cut of that?

At 3:53 PM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If he already sold the video to channel 7, they might have a case. That is the only way I could see it working though.

What amazes me is his attitude when forbes.com interviewed him. I don't know if he intended it or not, but the persona he is putting off is he doesn't give a damn what the FAA says, he is gonna do what he wants. That's a good way to draw attention to himself, which from what I have seen from his posts, he likes the attention.

At 4:13 PM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

He loves attention. Coworkers are not impressed. He acted invincible even before this drone issue.

He's a prick.

@3:51 those are two of worst analogies I've ever heard Brian.

It comes down to this – It is not the station's stuff. They can't say a thing if he wants to sell his own raw footage to someone else.

I think some coworkers of Brian's don't like him very much, and are a little envious that he might make money on this. Don't be that person. Find a way to make yourself more valuable and do it.

katv states all the time that it is his drone and not theirs he might be contract work has anyone thought of that angle?

At 5:12 PM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

He is a KATV employee. They want the video but don't want the liability of having their own drone. He can't get in trouble with them if they haven't signed anything stating it's KATV video. He isn't getting paid enough to do that anyway.

Perhaps the weirdest thing about this thread is its erroneous headline. The word "hock" means several things--a cut of meat, to place an item in a pawn shop, the act of brewing certain wines. "Hawk" would be the appropriate word for this application, as its usage connotes pedaling one's goods or services.

At 9:58 PM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

What would KATV do if he sold his footage to one of the other local stations? That's the true question that needs to be asked

At 9:06 AM, May 02, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why don't you let KATV management decide how much they care what he does with his own things?

It's not a drone it's a remote control helicopter

Omg did Jordan Bontke just show a shot of a guy who fell off a building laying lifeless on a Med Flight? That was horrible.

9:30 this is the definition:

I heard the KATV news director on the radio yesterday morning. There is clearly not a problem between KATV management and the drone owner as he talked pretty highly of him.

Well if Nick said it publicly then it just has to be true. It's not like he's known for saying whatever someone wants to hear or anything.

At 8:07 AM, May 06, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why would Nick have a problem with him? Nick gets the milk without having to buy the cow. It's win win for him.

Other jealous employees might not like it. That is their problem.

Wow Brian, you're clueless.

Brian, I'm not sure if or when you are posting here. But keep on keeping on. It's obvious your co-workers can't stand the attention you are getting. Don't worry about them. You are smart to pioneer this type of video gathering in Little Rock. Others are scared to do it. You probably have made mistakes and will continue to do so. That's ok. That happens anytime someone tries something new. You may end up finding this to be a very lucrative venture for your future, and that type of success always smacks naysayers upside the head when they are still living paycheck to paycheck.

I assure you that if I ever feel the need to dignify anything said here with a response...which outside of this particular instance is not likely to ever happen again...rest assured it will not be anonymously. But since I am here for the moment I will respond to the one name calling comment. I will say that I do believe in my mind (as it relates to the people who post on this blog who attack people anonymously) that I am indeed a "prick". In my mind, a prick is someone who thinks they are better than you and in relation to the people who post on this blog that attack anonymously that is undoubtedly true as I do believe I am better than you. Have you noticed that the people who really drum up a lot of hate and resentment here are going after clearly the most popular & most talented people (and I am not referring to myself here)? Yeah that would indeed by resentment and jealousy.

Wow, you really are that clueless.

@1:13, why don't you give us all a clue. How is this ruining your day? What has he done to you? What should he be doing differently?

While you are it, give Marine G. a clue. That story on food regulations was pointles, long and very boring.

Yeah, sorry. She is sort of our resident short bus reporter. She and Matt M. are peas in a pod like that.

Hey Brian, why don't you try and get some "drone" vid of Air Force One landing today. That would awesome.

kinda crazy if he charges 7 to use his video and still be employed by them at the same time. he's the one laughing all the way to the bank.
