KTHV Lone Little Rock Station Left in Wall-to-Wall Coverage

As of 1pm KTHV/Channel 11/Little Rock is the only Little Rock station still in wall-to-wall coverage.  KARK and KATV have both transitioned back into regular programming.  Channel 11 has anchors Denise Middleton and Alyse Eady at the anchor desk along with all the station's reporters, in addition to others from 11's sister stations.

Just making an observation, Denise and Alyse seem to be handling the anchoring duties pretty well.  I have not seen Alyse miss a beat all morning.

Is THV11 the only station to hire a helicopter pilot? Why didn't they call a freelancer with a drone?

Agreed on Denise and Alyse. Alyse has really done well. I must say though, I had to change channels when they kept cutting to Dawn in the field. Her every other word was "ahhhh." You normally would not expect that from a seasoned professional. All in all - good job by all in covering such a terrible story.

You don't 'win' by staying on air the longest but I have to say, THV found a way to stay relevant and bring continued interviews. Very surprised to see how Alyse overpowered Denise, she was on a roll.

Sampled all the extended local coverage this morning and had a hard time watching KARK-TV, Channel 4's male-female duo. Seemed they were packed in way too closely to each other and the continual nodding of her head was such so bothersome that I just couldn't watch their coverage for any period of time. Thought KATV and KTHV did a good job, though.

Ashley is overpowering Denise too. She needs to step up her game and act like she knows what she knows what she's talking about.

KTHV needed to makeup for the awkwardness of last night's coverage. The shots of Ed in a box on the screen looking at the radar & long stretches of silence were compounded by Sarah Fortner aggravating the crap out of him. She was no help to Ed & it appears at times the tension & stress got to him. Still not as bad as KATV's Matt Mershon's awkward incompetence (the Coast Guard on the scene) & the new reporter's unbelievable on scene accounting of the carnage & tragedy in Vilonia. They had to bring in Scott Inman to take over reporting & send the new guy to collect anything inciteful...

7:53 almost positive he said national guard on the scene. They all did a good job IMO.

No he said Coast Guard. We all heard it.

At 9:10 PM, April 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think Mershon should publicly apologize to the National Guard for that incompetent remark.

He probably doesn't even care how horribly he flubbed. He just cares about his next night at disco.

Give them a break! These are very stressful situations and they've been working 12+ hours straight. There are no teleprompters or rehearsed scripts so yes, even seasoned journalist will make mistakes. Some of you people are so freaking ridiculous!

At 10:26 PM, April 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Mershon had not been working 12 hours straight. I know that for a fact. His mistake was one of stupidity not fatigue.

At 10:32 PM, April 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It was a horrible and insulting mistake! Matt Mershon gets no breaks. This happened early on, so he wasn't tired. People were glued to the tv looking for information, and they got made up stories about the Coast Guard arriving. Horrible and inexcusable reporting!

Did he ever live on the coast? How much you want to bet no leadership called it to his attention

Talk about endurance and work. Ashley Blackstone brought it to the anchor desk yesterday with her marathon day. Whenever there is a heavy load in or outside the studio, that girl seems to get the assignment. She was the one out in the ice and snow all winter, and she pulled another long one yesterday. It will be interesting to see how she does this morning after all that time on air yesterday.

At 5:50 AM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ashley must be off this morning. Sounds like a sweet deal to me.

At 7:06 AM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

11:17, you are probably right. The trouble is the people who really run the newsroom day to day command little to respect from any talent. The EP is just one of the guys. The assignment manager is just one of the girls. Everyone higher up than that tries to avoid conflict. It's a mess.

At 7:16 AM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Seriously? He said coast guard instead of national. No one besides losers who are obsessed with KATV would probably even notice let alone care. Keep bringing it though because as long as you are obsessed with us and our faults it means you aren't focusing on yours and trying to improve your own product. Therefore you will never win. I guess it's just human nature to try and destroy that which you can not overcome.

At 7:28 AM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Seriously, what kind of reporter makes such a mistake? It was a hugely watched newscast. Does he have any idea how much credibility he lost?

At 7:30 AM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Maybe Mershon thought he was covering a hurricane.

At 7:35 AM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Credibility? He said a wrong word. It happens all the time and my the best of people. Get a clue, if you think he lost credibility from that then you need to get out of the business because you obviously have no idea what you're talking about and your ratings show it.

At 10:18 AM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You people need to get over yourselves. When we get to the scene and go live you have a million things running through your head. And to top it off you may have someone talking in your IFB while you are doing a live shot.

So please I would like a coke with that burger don't screw it up!

Do anchors from KARK and Fox switch over often? Very odd to see Donna on KARK talking with Keith.

At 11:55 AM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@11:13 that's your measure of success? We can't make fun of or criticize someone who makes more than us? You're not going to have a very happy life. By the way, the fries are done.

At 12:41 PM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Is KTHV going wall to wall again today with the exception of commercial breaks?

At 12:42 PM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm not a tv person, but to 11:55, that is how the world measures success.

And to the people asking whether it hurts that man's credibility, I say this: he never had any with me, I don't have the slightest idea who this young man is, but I did hear error and I did change the channel. I won't say which I changed to so as not to start that argument, but I can say they did a much better job of getting accurate information across.

Back to point, the reporter can't lose what he doesn't have. A long time ago reporters were hear for many years and I could name many of them, but now it seems we get stuck these kids who can barely form complete sentences on air. It's sad really.

It's funny to read how some posters on this board think its just fine and dandy to make big mistakes like that. It really speaks to the heart of a larger problem.

Alyse has gained my respect. She is handling herself very well.

All this coverage made me realize Erin Hawley is a terrible anchor. She is monotone and has cold eyes.

Are they still doing wall to wall? I've been impressed with THV coverage and talent. The donation drove on KARK was also great.

At 1:50 PM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I beg to differ. I think Erin has been great. She comes off as a true professional to me. Can't say that for some of the other anchors.

Also - been impressed w/ Ashley B. She's done well in my opinon too.

At 1:52 PM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

12:59, No! You are the one mistaken! It does NOT speak to the heart of a larger problem. Your comment does however speak to the fact that you're not a journalist and you have no idea what the hell you're talking about!

At 2:11 PM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

1:52, I do believe it does speak to the heart of a larger problem. You don't care about facts and details enough to correct them if you get them wrong. You just care about getting whatever incorrect information on the tv first. What's worse is your management has accepted it and let's you keep your job without any repercussions. Mistakes are not ok. That is the only part of this discussion that is not subjective.

At 2:14 PM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Who is Ashley B?

At 2:20 PM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@2:11 Do you realize how stupid you sound? Mistakes are not acceptable but are part of life. Just google news bloopers and you will see countless examples from all levels of journalists. To say he lost credibility because he misspoke one word is simply unfair, irrational, illogical and just plain stupid. It's obvious you don't like him and that's fine, everyone is entitled their own opinion, but to think and publicly state that he deserves some sort of punishment for it speaks to the level of that which you do not know.

At 2:23 PM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

2:14 She's the KARK anchor married to the old sports guy.

At 3:06 PM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If there are repercussions for them they happen less. That's also part of life. I'm really not pointing the finger at the reporter, but that it was noticed by many at my own water cooler the next day and you don't care. That's the fact.

At 3:40 PM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

3:06, I assume you and those at your water cooler must have pretty pathetic lives!

And how do you know we don't care?

At 4:17 PM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

This isn't the first time Mershon has flubbed a live shot. During the winter weather that came through a few months back they had him out by the freeway and he was horrible at ad-libbing when they tossed to him. He stumbled over every other word it seemed. The crop of reporters in this town is about as bad as it has ever been at all the stations, not just KATV. Merson's flub aside from sunday night, I can't believe the new guy at seven talked about seeing the feet sticking out from under the sheet. That was not a simple misspoken word, that was just an idiotic thing to say. Maybe it was just nerves or maybe he has never had to cover an event like this. I was glad KATV sent Scott out there with him.

At 4:23 PM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

4:11, there have been multiple posts on here suggesting you don't care about your mistakes and everyone should just expect them. .

At 4:31 PM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Some people may not understand that it's not just a flubbed word. He might as well have call them the n-word in the minds of the soldiers. The armed forces are on the same team, but in many cases are not friends. Their Drill Sargents may have even called them coast guardsmen as an alternative to the word "panty-waste" in training. I could see how rookie reporters might not understand how offensive this was.

At 4:34 PM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@4:23 OK, I'm done with you. There's not a single post here that says we don't care. We're just grown up enough to know that mistakes happen. You learn from them and you move on, obviously something you're not very good at.

At 4:38 PM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

4:34 you are only done with me because you lost this argument.

At 4:43 PM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Whether any of us care enough or not, I think 4:31 is correct. Some of the people defending Mershon may be just as ignorant as he is about the armed forces. Indeed it was not just a flub.

At 6:11 PM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It was a flub, you really think he meant disrespect? Think about shat you're saying. And btw, before you speak for all armed forces I suggest you pick up a weapon and stand a post. Army and Guard vet here and not offended one bit. People like you who get offended at everything must live a sad existence.

At 7:02 PM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't think he meant disrespect, but I did stand my post at the National Guard and I agree it was often used as an insult. I'm not particularly offended here, but from what I'm hearing he doesn't really understand the differences of the services on his good days.

At 7:55 PM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No one wants to look stupid on air but you are representing a big organization with more eyes than usual watching and deciding whether to watch you or someone else. Those mistakes make people look at their options even if that was their initial go - to station.

At 8:31 PM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yep, and when numbers come out you're the same person who complains that KATV is only number one because that's the station their parents watched and no one ever changes. Give it a rest. You're starting to look like THV coverage of this storm. Embarrassing

At 9:03 PM, April 29, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Have viewers been calling or writing complaints to THV11 about staying on the air over their favorite shows

At 8:52 AM, April 30, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@8:31, I 'm not sure why there seems to be this back and forth rage between KTHV and KATV. As it appears you are a KATV apologist, aren't you more worried about KARK? They have a solid weather team, most talented reporters, most consistent social media and web coverage, most access to the Razorbacks, and have by most accounts done the best job covering this storm.

I don't think KATV's domination is going to erode overnight. That is not how things work. KARK is fighting an old rep that is hard to shake, but time heals everything.

If you take into consideration all the personnel losses both in front and behind the camera that KATV has sustained, how can you suggest the domination is sure to continue?

At 9:18 AM, April 30, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KARK was something to be nervous about. But they have gotten worse since the Fox 16 takeover. KARK did have the best reporters, but not anymore. They aren't what they used to be. It's sad because I did like them.

Mershon made another big error the other day during a live shot while covering a story about four gas workers being struck by lightning when he reported at 6 p.m. that two were in "serious and critical condition," while correcting himself at 10 p.m. by saying all four had been treated and released from the hospital that day. Not trying to pick on the guy, but he doesn't impress me. Comes across as a bit sensationalistic; kind of guy you'd see on the old syndicated "A Current Affair."

At 8:38 PM, April 30, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

He shoots too, right? Why not just make him a photographer for a while until he learns how to report?

Wait, did anyone else notice Ed Buckner's tourette the night of the storm? I felt so bad for him.

At 12:13 PM, May 02, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@8:38 Wayne Cross was an MMJ for THV11. They gave him an ultimatum to be a photog because he was so bad and he quit.

At 12:39 PM, May 02, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well it sounds like that is where this Mershon guy needs to be. His talent level isn't great either, so he needs to be a much better reporter than he is.

When Jordan Bontke started at KATV I looked up his resume reel. It was nice but he has not impressed me now that he is on the air here. For a guy who has been sent overseas, his tornado coverage has not been good.

Hate to say it gang, but for the first time, the weather channel kicked butt. They were two steps ahead and extremely local with reporter and spotters in LR. Also, not much if any mindless blah, blah or weird 11 silence and Ed ordering people around.

Next day, seven won the day, I thought, but four was close. Reporters on 11 bug. I would be insulted if they had to bring people in from other markets. I work here everyday, Jack!

Janelle did a live interview with a man who kept telling her how he was staying safe by watching the weather channel the whole time.

Yep, there's no edit button on live interviews.

I agree. The Weather Channel was the best. I just wish they would quit airing entertainment shows and do the weather. That's what happens when sales gets involved.

Dawn @ KTHV does not do well off the cuff, but is good with a teleprompter. Her "uhhhhs" were every other sentence or breath. I bounced around 4, 7, & 11 for the Pres visit and she was doing it again from the desk. Bad. She needs to watch her own tape.
