KATV Sues Another LR Network After Hiring Former Reporter

Little Rock is becoming quite the city with media lawsuits.  Arkansas Business.com reports KATV/Channel 7/Little Rock is sueing the Soul of the South Network for hiring former reporter Katherina Yancy.  AB.com reports Yancy left her job at KATV April 1st.  The article says the station met with Soul of the South executives concerning their hiring of Yancy.  According to the lawsuit Soul of the South execs told KATV GM Mark Rose the reporter's return to KATV wasn't going to happen.

Yancy was under contract with KATV through January 2015.  Seems KATV is anticipating her return as the station hasn't hired a reporter to replace her.

The article reads that KATV is suing the network, not Katherina.

Can KATV force her to return? That has to be a fun working environment.

Just like with Christina, no email was sent out about Kat and management will not let staff take her bio down. KATV is an interesting place to work right now.

There is NO way that this reporter returns to KATV. They don't want her back but KATV can't allow another media outlet to totally disregard an existing contract and come after their people. This is about setting precedent. The reporter was bad, and KATV is interviewing for her replacement.

I heard KATV sue Christina for leaving. Why, if she got out of the business? Did she walk out without notice?

At 9:42 AM, April 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You dont like her, that is fine. Kat was a hard worker. She was a team player, she would MMJ and edit if she had to and she did a lot of Web postings. She didn't expect special treatment like an Erin Hawley or Justin Lewis. Christina also did a lot more than was expected of her.

I was surprised. If you go to the katv bios, all the anchors and reporters are white. Are they filling Christian's position or is it just Erin and Beth?

@9:29, there is no accountability by news managers. Local stations don't train talent, guide them, give pointers. I can think of a solid reporter at any station. All had an opportunity to shine during the tornado coverage and most failed.

As a viewer, I think Jason Pederson does well overall. Is that because he has a particular segment and doesnt have to worry about regular daily things covered? I have seen reporters out, i assume it is tricky to have to learn a new subject for the day, then move on. In my opinion, Christina Munoz was a great anchor.

Really? Watching KARK and they air a video of Sussane Brunner asking her photog if the camera is rolling, she starts walking and goes up to a woman and gives her a family picture found in the rubble and says she is glad she found it for her. She got caught staging an emotional moment, epic fail.

At 10:20 AM, April 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@959 thanks jason. way to patt yourself on the back. jason is a prick just like deewayne graham was. reporters are trained to ask questions to learn about the subject they are gonna report on. sure sum are better than others. most these days don't have a clue :)

At 10:25 AM, April 28, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@10:09 Susanne Brunner is getting hammered on a KARK FB video clip. Some of these reporters make this devastation painful to watch, they don't have a vocabulary without a script apparently.

Hey!" says overly made-up woman in a perky manner, "Does this belong to you?" (Gives extremely fake hug). So gross. So fake. So exploitive. No shame whatsoever KARK reporter.

THV was smart to have Craig anchor for Phil at 10 and put Dawn Scott out live in the morning.
@9:51 Dawn just asked someone in a neighborhood live, "are they rebuilding this morning?"
Neighborhoods flattened hours ago and she asks that question. That to me puts it into perspective that if a veteran asks a stupid question, the reporters are not going to do any better.

In this suit, would Soul of the South be able to bring up the amount of times KATV hired people who were still under contract at another organization? I'm not sure if that would be admissible, but I think it would nullify any moral ground KATV could stand on.

At 12:08 PM, April 30, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Of all people, Kat worked at 11 when KATV hired her. THV didn't do anything to her or Alyson Courtney. Looks like KATV is trying to prove no one can do them like that.
It's so silly to spend money on attorney fees when the new network doesn't even air in the state.
KATV will probably end up paying more on court dates than the poor girl made.
People have their reasons for leaving and it's usually better pay or trying to leave a certain work environment.
Waste of time and energy.
Did they try and sue Jessica Dean for going to KARK? That is real competition, not this new station targeting African Americans.

At 12:57 PM, April 30, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Erin Hawley also broke a contract when she came to KATV.

So it's fine for Channel 7 management to do it, just as long as it never happens to them.

At 12:59 PM, April 30, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

We wish she would have stayed where she was. Erin has been nothing but a problem from the start.

At 1:15 PM, April 30, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Heather Crawford saw her as competition for the evening anchor job and called KATV to tell them Erin would be a great candidate for the weekend anchor position.

First Coast News staff told friends here in the local market they were happy she left. The stories they told!

At 1:24 PM, April 30, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well regardless of what her past coworkers have to say about Erin, her performance on Sunday showed ineptness. She's not ready to be an anchor.

At 5:29 PM, April 30, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Watching Erin, it looks like she doesn't want to make a sudden move and mess up her hair. She looks obsessed with making her hair look like she is entering a beauty pageant. It is not natural.

At 12:08 AM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

As bad as Katherina is on air, it's hard to believe another network would hire her, or that KATV would spend the money on litigation to keep her, even if only to prove a point. She has not improved one bit since her days at THV.

At 6:28 AM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Katherina isn't as bad as people on here pretend. I would even go as far as to say she's about as good as Erin. True, that's not saying much, but no one is saying Erin should be taken off air altogether either.

At 8:14 AM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

This suit isn't about her, it's about proving a point.
They tried to sue a woman who wanted nothing more than to be able to be a good mom. One of Christian's kids was in school. So she get to take her to school and then what? Come home at 11 p.m. and see the family asleep? She finds a job paying more than $100k outside the news business and they try and force her to stay. They have no feelings.

At 8:31 AM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If I had a dollar for every email and phone call we get asking us not to replace Christina with Erin.
They will be interesting and frequent for three months while Beth is on maternity leave.
She isn't a bad person, she just isn't personable.

At 8:32 AM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KATV thinks less of the public will come to Katherina's defense because she is not as well known as Christina. Also, Katherina probably doesn't have as much money to spend on lawyers to fight them.

At 8:56 AM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Heather had nothing to worry about. Why would First Coast pick Erin over Heather?
@8:32, KATV looks to be going after the money. They sued the station, not Kat. They will look like the devil if they sue a reporter making something between $26-$35k.
Did KATV drop the suit against Christina?

At 9:04 AM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Heather is smart and realized Erin looked the part and is ambitious. Regardless of how her coworkers felt about her, we all know sometimes that doesn't matter. Erin probably thought none of this would follow her here, but it's a small world and even smaller business.

At 9:08 AM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Not sure what happened with the suit against Christina. I'm assuming they settled. KATV management is becoming worthless. To this day we haven't received a single official word on what happened to Christina. Most of the newsroom didn't even know she was working somewhere else for a while. When your top anchor of over 10 years resigns one would assume that management would want to at the very least milk the situation for all it was worth. She didn't even get to say goodbye. Instead what do they do? Sue her and pretend like nothing is happening and keep the public and your newsroom in the dark. That shows you how much KATV cares about people, viewers or employees.

At 9:15 AM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Even some of the "managers" were/are in the dark on that one.

At 9:30 AM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Any girl who's been in a sorority can see through exactly what Heather did. That trick is normally done with guys and dresses, but it worked for her in this case too.

At 10:05 AM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Please, the only "managers" in the dark are Rusty Mizell and Kenny Reynolds

At 10:10 AM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Don't forget Chris Scott, Angela Rachels, and Matthew.

At 10:24 AM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Two producers and the assignment desk person? They wish they had manager salaries. Why would they be in meetings about law suits?
I doubt the EP and people on the assignment desk at THV were involved or even knew about Mark Edwards suing the station.

At 11:21 AM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

They all have manager titles. Who knows about the salaries, but they all drive nicer cars than reporters! lol

At 11:28 AM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Did Jessica Duff leave THV11 because she was close friends with Mark Edwards and knew the discrimination lawsuit was coming out? Her name is in it.

At 11:44 AM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@10:24 They wouldn't be in meetings about lawsuits but they sure as hell should be in meetings about your main anchor resigning.

At 12:36 PM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@11:44, why do you think they are out of the loop?

At 12:39 PM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

One person at 7 likes Erin, and that's Nick. Rob Thomas is a maybe.

At 1:07 PM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@12:36, I'm not 11:44, but I would say it's because they are too close to the rank and file employees.

I'm not sure what it is like at the other stations around here, but one thing I've noticed since I came here is that it is a rare day when reporters or producers answer for anything we/they do wrong. I benefit from that in some ways, so I'm not exactly complaining – except to say the same BS keeps happening over and over, and all we get is an email wondering where the all the lost equipment/vehicles are (for example).

So other than scheduling, these "managers" don't really manage anyone but the photographers (sorry photogs).

At 2:12 PM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@12:39, it's not Rob's job or interest to "like" anyone. He isn't in that newsroom game.

At 2:16 PM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sounds like Erin is shallow and spends energy trying to step over coworkers. Don't know her but I have seen Jessica Duff in action. How she got sweet Ashley Blackstone to befriend her, I will never know. Jessica is trouble and I would not put it past her to work with Edwards to pull something.

At 2:24 PM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@2:12, Rob Thomas REALLY had an interest in Jeannette. He even made her a good bye video with her work. Is that creepy? A guy with an 18 year old son, spending time going through 2 years of archive of this girl? She posted it on her FB page and told friends at THV11 about it.

At 2:53 PM, May 01, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If true, that's a different type of "like".

At 8:56 AM, May 03, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Rob also gave a rather interesting opportunity to the girl who was hired to do social media. She happens to be a young black girl too, and now spends more time on her "deal of the day" promotion than anything else.

What kind of salaries do Beth and Erin make? Are they paid the same amount?

At 7:26 AM, May 04, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Of course not. One just got here, and the other has been around for a long time.

At 8:22 AM, May 04, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

And they both make way less than Christina did.

At 10:25 AM, May 04, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Silly question. Why would Erin as a weekend anchor make the same as a full time anchor like Beth? Obviously she makes far less and on par with what reporters make.

At 11:02 AM, May 04, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Beth makes in the $60k range. Erin in the $50k range.

At 11:08 AM, May 04, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Erin has to make more than what a reporter makes. A reporter can't afford to rent a 2,000 square foot house alone in West Little Rock.

Christina made enough for her husband to stay home with the kids.

Beth lives in a big house with nice cars and their child is in private school but her husband also does well.

At 11:26 AM, May 04, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Erin does make more, but don't forget about her alimony.

At 12:30 PM, May 04, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Erin arrives and makes nearly as much as a main anchor who has been here more than 10 years? That doesn't make sense.
Erin Hawley gets alimony? They were not married long. The way she talks about him, it doesn't sound like he is doing anything for her.

At 12:53 PM, May 04, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Beth isn't making six figures or anything. Erin makes close to her I'm sure.

At 8:50 PM, May 04, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

How does anyone know what anyone makes? You don't!!!

At 9:24 PM, May 04, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Don't put it past a woman like Erin to sue for alimony.

Make that man pay for the bleach.

At 10:56 PM, May 04, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Erin came here and bought that house straight away. Something is fishy about it. It could be she was sitting on some money from her marriage that she needed to burn.

At 7:28 AM, May 05, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

She's renting it dipshit.

At 8:18 AM, May 05, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I am a woman, and therefore a "stupid bitch" not a "dipshit" thank you very much. And no, she is not renting it.

At 9:42 AM, May 05, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why are we still talking about Erin like she's interesting? She's probably the one on here stirring up the convo to keep it going. I wouldn't put it past that crazy fool.

At 11:00 AM, May 05, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Erin H. is doing everything to dig in, be a full time anchor and stay now that she has a boyfriend she introduces as Doctor. I heard she celebrates the anniversary of every month they are together and it hasn't even been 6 months. That's what you do in high school.

At 6:36 PM, May 05, 2014, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes, she IS renting it. Been renting the same house since she moved here ask her yourself.

Erin is psycho!!! Even from college!!! She needs serious help. People from Ole Miss (specifically NewsWatch12 people) couldn't stand her. She was always crazy as hell. CRAZY!!!!

I wonder if Erin is dressing as Amanda Bynes for Halloween tonight?
