Shreveport Anchor Leaving

Long time Shreveport anchor Ed Walsh is leaving KTBS/Channel 3.  He announced his plans on his facebook page:

To my Facebook friends, this is one of the hardest things I've had to write since joining many, many years ago. But this afternoon, I tendered my resignation from KTBS 3. After 10 and a half years. I have been offered the most incredible opportunity to handle public relations/community relations for Caesars Entertainment. I'll be working out of the Horseshoe and Harrah's Louisiana Downs in Bossier City. Words cannot describe what I'm feeling right now. I have loved every minute of every morning show. But there comes a time in your life when you have to assess what is right for you. I have chosen to start the trek down a new path. I want to thank you for your support, encouragement and love. The show must and will go on without me. Wendi and Brian will do a wonderful job, until Chrissi can return from her maternity leave. Thank you once again.

Good luck, Ed. I thought you did a good job.

Good for you Ed. You will LOVE the new job, and being out of the KTBS pressure cooker is the best move any one can make.

I've been wondering how much longer Ed would stay since Sonja left. Just waiting to hear that Joe and Gerry are leaving.

Exactly, and none of the morning shows are worth watching any more.

I actually don't mind the new girl on KSLA in the mornings!

Totally agree @6:59 PM. Although when I DO need to know some news in the am, I've actually started watching KTAL. Believe me I NEVER thought I'd say that.

Good luck Ed! That's a great job.

@7:18 PM
I'll say a prayer for you. I used to work at KTAL and I can't bring myself to watch them. The entire time I worked at KTAL I was still a loyal KTBS viewer. Not any more. Just give me the headlines in the A block and weather, then I'm off to BBC World News for some real news. Not morning show fluff and rerun packages from the 10:00 the night before.

Good luck with the new job Ed. Life after broadcasting is SWEET!

Yet another long time KTBS personality has left the building. Only 4 more to go before KTBS will not have anyone on air over age 40.

I dunno, I hear word that management is going to have Bob Griffin's organs replaced with animatronics and Coppertop batteries so he can keep going on and on and on . . . .

At 1:17 PM, June 07, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I wouldn't put it past them just to keep Bob around as their token senior.

Seems the KTBS graphics package is popular in other places. KCEN in Temple Texas uses the same red and gold Christmas graphics.

I wonder if KCEN's London Broadcasting management is as bad as KTBS's Wray family management?

At 1:53 PM, June 10, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Could be. I was just on the KTBS website and see they have several jobs posted. Wasn't that Marketing Director position posed last year?

So did Farr leave already?

At 12:22 PM, June 11, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No one will last as the Marketing Director. I love the description for the MMJ position. You will "be required" to do everything. No wonder that position is posted two or three times a year.

Can anyone from KTBS confirm that to avoid any sanctions against the station regarding the Rhonda Lee fiasco, KTBS "voluntarily" agreed to have one black and one white anchor on the weekend news?

At 9:33 AM, June 12, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sanctions? Rhonda didn't file an EEOC complaint until January, it could take years for that to be resolved.

It's a bit of a revolving door. You'll see new faces come and go.

At 3:04 PM, June 13, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Evidently KTBS is worse then what everyones says. I'll see someone a few times then they'er gone. Like one of the previous commenters, I also see the same 4 or 5 jobs posted several times a year. Seems to be a horrible place to work.

The most stable group of on air folks lately seems to be at (good Lord) channel 6!

At 3:38 PM, June 13, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I know, right? I NEVER thought that would be the case, but that's what happens when you get a good GM and ND running things.

At 7:38 PM, June 13, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nexstar is pretty cookie-cutter about stuff these days. But I will say KTAL has improved a lot from the past year. Wonder how big a check they had to write to get that weird female black anchor who used to slaughter her words with slurs and over-enunciated syllables.
Does anyone have any ratings on KTAL news? Interesting to see how big a dent they're making in ratings/shares.

At 10:04 PM, June 13, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Regarding good GM & ND at KTAL. Guess it was a matter of time as 6 had a history of bozos for bosses through the years, even with Nexstar. Andy Pontz was a good ND but he really never had a chance to turn the place around thanks to nutjob management.
Now KTBS has the distinction of taking over being the weird station with weird management as weird as H. Lee Bryant and Jean Byrd.

At 11:54 AM, June 14, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Who would of ever thought this would be the case? Things were really turning around under Andy, but we'll never know where KTAL would be now if they didn't have a control freak micromanaging the station from Irving, and his puppet Screaming Scotty Thomas.

At 12:59 AM, June 16, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sales is the bread and butter of the station. All else is a necessary evil that sucks salaries. Sales provides salaries.

At 12:19 PM, June 16, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

To increase profits, why not get rid of all local news programming and instead just run satellite news feeds and infomercials, that way corporate could save even more money and not have to worry about non-sales salaries, employee benefits, etc.
That way they could maximize profit without any expense other than bldg operation/maintenance, electric bill, etc. If they did this, then at least they'd be honest instead of pretending to be serving the community need to know. Utopia!!

At 1:46 PM, June 16, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@ 12:59 AM
And as we see all the time you guys in sales are just as replaceable as we are.

At 2:20 PM, June 16, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That's almost happened at a local station here, they got rid of national/regional sales and had everything run by the GM through the Sales Secretary so they could cut commissions....wonder who gets the commission now ;)

At 5:01 PM, June 16, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

What,what,whaat??? Do tell.

At 1:29 AM, June 17, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well it's not a secret that newbie sales folks who don't know better have had their commissions shaved by a certain GM...plus they have to sign a non-compete. Anyone with any real adsales experience wouldn't touch that deal with a 10-ft. pole.

I've been reading the comments on this thread and there have been some interesting points made and questions asked. I left the Shreveport market several years ago, and all of my former co-workers I remained in contact with have moved on so this blog is how I keep up.

Can anyone tell me when did KTBS turn like it has, and how bad is it there these days? I agree with a previous comment that it does look like KTBS is practicing agism with only four people over 40 left on-air.

When did KTAL turn it around? They had always been a joke of a station with a very high turnover. We used to record their newscasts for a laugh. They were the worst station I had seen in any market.

And what happened to KSLA? They were always #1 when I was here, but they are horrible now. I've been in town two days, and I have yet to see them have a visibly perfect newscast. Their talent can't read, and their are major problems with production.

At 12:37 PM, June 17, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

11:43AM-- Some quick observations that may help address your questions:

KTBS has always been a screwy place to work thanks to the weirdo-Wray family and a GM they've empowered to do as he pleases. But things started to turn when they fired 18 to 20 people in the course of two weeks in '09 I believe... cutting costs to show an increase in quarterly profits. And it just kept getting worse, they had people doing double-shifts/newscasts because they wouldn't or couldn't hire any suitable replacements.

KTAL was purchased by Nexstar about 11 or 12 yrs ago. They gutted the bldg and brought it up to date as far as broadcast ops were concerned. They had bumps along the way with a mix of crazy GM's & psycho ND's...there were some really odd hires because of some client friendships. Then somehow the planets aligned and they got a no-nonsense ND with experience who seems to be a doing a decent job at keeping things at least looking like a newscast. The GM apparently isn't meddling too much in that area. And some of the talent on the desk is capable of prompter reading.

KSLA... well the GM there came from a News bkgrd and everyone on-air is basically a mimic of his style, which sucks/blows big time. KSLA's saving grace is that the focus a lot on the Af. American community which gives them something of a consistent audience base. KTBS...they don't go out of their way in that demo, could be because the Wrays are from Shreveport's plantation DNA. KTBS had a big too-doo over an Af.American weathergal who allegedly violated social media policy by responding to a later verified as a mentally-challenged poster who took issue with her short Af. American hair. So she got canned and it caused a stink.
Back to KSLA... they are pretty much paint-by-numbers in how they go about doing things. Their on-air happy, smiley, glib anchors simply suck and it wears on ya.
Raycom which owns KSLA is a cheap-o redneck company so as long as they keep the status-quo, nobody really cares. The News Op doesn't really have adult supervision... it's run more like an overblown college TV news op IMHO.

Nothing personal against Ed, I like him. However, it's still the same ol' KTBS. They pick and choose who they want to give on-air goodbyes. Anyone remember how Gwen Campbell was treated? An OTS with her photo and Gerry May read a reader. Best of luck Ed and for those left behind, well...

At 3:20 PM, June 19, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

At least Gwen rated a 30 second reader. Most don't even get that. Only if you're a chosen one will you get a on-air send off. Look at Jennifer Gray, she had two.

Kind of like the slapped-together send-off they did on Al Pierce and Liz Swaine. I've heard it said however that not too many people at 3 were sad to see Liz go as she'd be unpleasant to work with. I know a couple of photogs who used to work there and they weren't big-fans.

KTBS used to be very stable, but when George fired Andy Pontz, and brought in the "the problem," there's been a consistently high turnover ever since. I'm curious to know just how many people have come and gone from KTBS over the past 10-15 years since then.

At 12:28 PM, June 26, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Firing Andy was only part of the equation as Andy simply couldn't deal with the ever-growing ego of Liz. She got into her head that all things concerning the news dept needed to be run by her for her blessing and Andy just didn't have it in him to deal with her. She raised a major bitch over when they hired Shari Warren because it was heard that she "...felt she should've been consulted.." Excuse me!!?? So they hired Rich as ND who basically was given a mandate to "deal with things". He took Liz off one of the evening casts and made her do more field reporting on assignment. This didn't sit too well with her and she took it out on the nearest poor photog or studio crewmember. She was making a lot of money and a lot of waves for folks on the second floor and they grew tired of it.
Sure...things have continued to slide since then but that's the way it is. Once Sirven fired Rich for basically lying to him about not using the weather-cams until they got sponsors... it cleared the path for him to micro-manage the news because Elkins was pretty ineffective as ND, taking cues from upstairs. (Anyone remember the Katrina debacle?)

I liked Andy and had a really good news sense for the station. But as far as dealing with diva-egos and other issues, he wouldn't get too involved, either hoping they'd go away or settle themselves. I can only guess that because he knew how things at KTBS were handled in the past, he was better off letting the chips fall where they did and it cost him.

How cute, Wendi with an i. I wonder if she uses a little heart instead of a dot on the i? Caught Wendi with an i during the 11:00 am newscast today, and she's cute and all, and she can read a prompter, however, she can't do hard news. I laughed the entire time she was trying to do the hard news about DOMA and Prop 8 at the top of the show. It was to funny.

At 10:55 AM, June 27, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

12:37pm: OMG, I remember this when it happened like it was yesterday.
Liz did have a real high opinion of herself and it didn't make her very attractive. I'm buds with a former male anchor who told me that she never showed him any friendliness during his time working with her. Amazing how friendly she acts now that she's basically a PR suck-up for the DDA as she was quite the opposite during her KTBS tenure.

Speaking of KTBS, when I worked there we joked that it was the only "absentee-owned" station where the owners had an office upstairs. So glad to be away from that place but like a car wreck, when I get forwarded stuff on this page I can't help but to glance and wince.

BTW, someone said Pontz recently had a heart attack; any 411 on that?

3:38PM -- about the Katrina Debacle--
This was posted sometime back on the ArkLaTex TV News blog:

"This from Newsblues: "Shreveport insiders tell us Jan Elkins is out after six years as news director at crappy little KTBS-3-ABC, but she will remain with the family-owned station as Community Services Director.

Assignment Manager Randy Bain has been named interim ND.

Staffers claim bonehead decisions may have led to her removal. As Katrina roared ashore two weeks ago, it was Elkins's call to cut away from ABC live coverage and air syndicated Regis. She also kept the station's two live trucks parked."

Some speculate that she must be related to the Wray family somehow as other ND's got fired for less.

It's reassuring to know I'm not alone. I moved back to Shreveport a few years ago, and there's as a clear slant to local news that wasn't there in the past. I've noticed it much more with KTBS then the other two stations.

At 1:38 PM, July 01, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Maybe that explains the red set and graphics?

At 3:35 PM, July 01, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well the management at 3 is pretty white-bread ol' boy system. Heck anyone look at Gerry May's FB page and you can see where he leans.

At 12:30 PM, July 02, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hurray, I'm not alone! Here I thought I was the only one who thought the same thing.

I moved back to Shreveport after 28years in the Pacific Northwest and the local stations are nothing like they were growing up here.

KTBS is clearly right in its reporting. KSLA is just awful, and pitiful old KTAL has finally gotten its "stuff" together. I never knew any one who watched KTAL growing up here, but now it's the only station I can stand to watch.

At 12:43 PM, July 02, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KTBS used to be the station to watch for half-way decent local news reporting but that time has long passed. They have so many people come and go at that station and very few seem to have any clue about the area or what they're doing. I suspect that comes from a lack leadership in the news dept. From everything I've heard from people who used to work there, the ownership at the station is running on auto-pilot, deferring to the GM who seems to be a cost-control freak and runs things on a priority du jour basis. Quite an unstable environment or so it seems.

KSLA just bumps along with a paint-by-numbers approach and the on air staff is just plain dorky. The chief weather dork is hard to watch and listen to.

KTAL, who would've ever thought they'd get their shit together after all these years? They still have flaws but honestly, they are the most improved of the bunch. I do find myself watching KTAL by default after the NBC network news but maybe just the first block as I don't really care about the sports or much else.

At 3:48 PM, July 04, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That is very evident in all their news coverage. I also recently moved back, and I fully agree with several of the previous comments. Over all, the local news coverage is nothing like it once was. I grew up watching KSLA and KTBS, and now I can't stand either one. This is yet one more thing to add to my ever growing list of regrets of moving back here.

Yep, for all the advances in TV technology, what used to be good stations are simply packaged mediocrity and commercials posing as news segments. KSLA is lame and KTBS is obnoxious. KTAL has made some great strides compared to what it was back a few years ago, though.

The KTBS 4th of July bash on the river front did not translate well to television. The few people I know who went said it was good, but the traffic was horrible. A couple of them DVR'ed it, and laughed at how bad it looked. Had enough of Juice Newton and Lee Greenwood back in the 80's, and don't care to see them 30 years on. Not a big fan of Kenny Wayne Crackhead either.

The camera-work and switching was horrible. I thought I was getting seasick with all the cutting back & forth and out-of-focus shots, shakey-cam shots, yuk! BTW, who is the skinny white-girl with the ice-cream cone red hair? My girlfriend said: "Look...it's Conan's sister!" I nearly died laughing. Seriously weird looking hairdo there girl!

Yeah, KTBS's coverage Thursday was horrible. But so is their coverage of the Mardi Gras parades. Live events are clearly not their thing.

At 11:02 AM, July 07, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

All that matters for KTBS Live Coverage Events is sponsorship, no matter if the program elements are poorly executed or not, it's a "LIVE EVENT" and they buy into it.

At 12:17 PM, July 07, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's always the same old advertisers buying into these "poorly executed" events every time. Most people who are interested in these live event are actually there, not watching it on tv.

At 6:38 PM, July 07, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well it was purely ego-stroke for the sponsors... they had a live BS session with the Shehees of the insurance/funeral home company. They sponsored and their live-but blew chunks but hey...let's whip their skippy LIVE, right George? Was anyone from KTBS wearing kneepads that night?

6:38PM, you must've worked one KTBS Live Events too many! But thanks for the laugh, it made my morning!

Good, at least it 6:38PM made someones morning. His comment sounds like something my uncle would say after a couple of 2 or 7 highballs.

At 9:09 PM, July 10, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

6:38pm did touch on something however as they will go out of their way to include "experts" in their newscasts who coincidentally happen to buy quite a bit of advertising. So yeah...there's a whole lotta strokin' going on.

At 10:19 AM, July 11, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, so? That's not a KTBS exclusive. KSLA and KTAL do the same thing.

Chris Tingle is the stroke king, and king of live and look live "sponsored" commercial breaks.

"Sponsored Commercial Breaks"...uh...
what am I not getting here?

At 12:53 PM, July 12, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

8:16 PM call me. I have something to tell you.

8:26 PM It's an inside joke. KTBS has sponsors for everything so a couple of us had this running joke "this pen is sponsored by Staples" or "this toilet is sponsored by Fitzgerald's plumbing" or "this commercial break is sponsored by Wray Ford and Ivan Smith Furniture." Goofy stuff like that to break the tension and monotony that permeates throughout the building.

At 11:58 AM, July 13, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I get a laugh whenever I see a KTBS promo where at the end they have a fullscreen of all the sponsors... and it looks like so much clutter on the screen. Do advertisers really think these multiple logo-placements are of any advertising value? It looks like scattered trash on screen to me. I get the same feeling whenever I see a newspaper ad or billboard with the same clutter. Looks cheap IMHO

At 1:09 PM, July 13, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You're right, the clutter does look cheap, and kind of desperate and pathetic. Unfortunately that's not going to change as long as the advertiser-sponsors continue paying for those spots.

At 9:13 PM, July 13, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Those cluttered sponsor pages do look ridiculous. All the logos are small and they're only on air for 3 or 5 seconds... I can't even make out who they are most of the time.
Wish I had money to burn like that.

At 8:00 PM, July 14, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Kinda like the event T shirts you'll see where they have all the sponsors listed. Nobody reads or really pays attention to that stuff except to note that it looks like crap.

At 11:11 AM, July 15, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Exactly. No one cares if you are one of the 17 sponsors for an event. It all get's lost in the shuffle, and is not going to help you sell any more cars, caskets, food, furniture, or Icee's.

At 4:35 PM, July 15, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sponsorships like that a strictly an ego buy and have very little advertising value. The guy who owned a local business that I worked for a number of years would only buy LSU college football or NFL playoff spots and he'd buy just one or two spots in the entire game at a high premium because he wanted to get a woody from all his drinking buddies who watched the game saying: Hey I saw so & so advertise on LSU-BAMA game Superbowl or whatever. But get him to advertise on a regular basis? Naaah...that's too much money and won't work! he used to say. I think the recession finally put him out of biz.

At 10:14 AM, July 16, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Your former boss was not alone. There were several business owners who did the same thing. Only one of them is still in business today, but just barely.

So are these live commercial breaks a Chris Tingle exclusive?

At 10:25 AM, July 16, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Is the Chris Tingle spots these ArkLaTex Pro Look-Live spots on KTAL?
They pretty much blow.

At 12:09 PM, July 16, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, that's him. Chris moved from KTAL to KTBS/KPXJ and is doing the same live/look-live spots there. He also did the same live/look lives spots when he was with KTAL's Nexstar sister stations in Monroe.

Gotta say about the Ed Walsh references...we'd crack up because he'd always seem to really stress the pronunciation of his last name as if he'd go from normal speed to slow speed everytime he said his name.
So I guess that's the deal with these references. There was a guy in promotions who always cringed everytime he heard his name because he felt E.W. was so full of it.

At 12:35 PM, July 26, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

He's not the only E.W. who is full of it.

At 2:15 PM, July 26, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Does E.W. have a new GF yet?
Heck the twins should be almost teenagers by now.

It's sad that KTBS was knocked off the air by the weather last night. Used to be KTAL was always the one knocked off the air, not KTBS. My how things have changed.

I have. Rowe did nice public interest stories in the 70's. Now its just these sappy pseudo-christian pieces.
And it seems nobody but meteorology has to have a basic science education.
