Former NWA Anchor Tapped as Evening News Anchor at KTHV

Source: KTHV We are proud to announce Arkansas native Matt Turner is joining the Today's THV News Team as an Evening News Anchor. For the past nine years, he has been a fixture in Northwest Arkansas as primary news anchor for KNWA (NBC) Television in Fayetteville.

Turner is an Arkansan through and through. He was born and raised in Arkadelphia where he played baseball for Arkadelphia High School and was an all-conference pitcher. Being a two-year starter for the Arkadelphia Badgers led him to quarterback for Southern Mississippi, then after one year in Hattiesburg he transferred to his hometown to play starting quarterback for Ouachita Baptist University where he met his wife Julee. He was born and raised in Arkadelphia where his late father was long time pastor of 3rd Street Baptist Church.

Matt grew up watching KTHV and has written articles for the Daily Siftings Herald and also provided sports play by play to radio listeners. Today's THV President and General Manager Michael Caplan stated, "Matt is an Arkansan who brings a wealth of experience, ranging from breaking news and political reporting to firsthand knowledge of Razorback athletic programs."

THV News Director Chuck Maulden added, "Matt adds even more credibility and brings real versatility to our team. Everything in his past has prepared him for this job. He has hosted statewide debates for senate and congressional races, he's covered breaking news, written, shot and produced countless stories as well as documentaries and he knows the newsmakers throughout Arkansas."

Turner takes pride in the many relationships he's built with so many Arkansas sports figures and politicians. He says, "Just days after earning my degree in Mass Communications at OBU, legendary broadcaster and 'Voice of the Razorbacks' Mike Nail offered me a job to cover Arkansas athletics. I was in 'Hog Heaven'. My career became even better with my transition to news."

Turner says the relationships that mean the most to him involve his wife, daughter and family. He is proudest of his 8-month-old daughter Preslee Bell. Turner states, "My wife and I are coming home and now I'm a part of a television station that I grew up watching. My mom and family will see me covering the Little Rock area and that will be one of the greatest joys of my life. I'm more motivated than ever to serve my fellow Arkansans by providing informative, entertaining and quality news! I'm dedicated to making a positive difference at Today's THV and I can't wait to get started."

Matt Turner will make his Little Rock television debut in September.

So let me get this straight. This person is a Razorback booster. That is the main reason he is right for this news job? Come on! Please tell me he has a background in journalism, reporting, knowing fluff from news.
Razorback boosterism is fine for sports nerds, but there is (or should be) a difference between semi-pro college sports and local news of events of substance that affect us all. Please can we stop this nonsense Happy TIme fluffiness in Little Rock TV news!!!

Yeah, I agree with 1058. Leave the hog heaven crap for sports. You've moved out of NW Arkansas and are anchoring in central Arkansas. You have an audience of uca asu and ualr even. Give the hog ties some loosening.

According to Matt's Facebook page he has won awards for news reporting and is responsible for many exclusive interviews and breaking news stories. It also said that he was voted best news anchor by an Arkansas magazine and was named to the Arkansas Business 40 Under 40 list for his success as a journalist. I have followed his career from the beginning and I know he is more than qualified for the position. I have known him since his college days and I am very proud to see that he has excelled in our industry.

Matt will do a good job. I have seen him many times when I was in Fayetteville covering sports.

While I was in the Little Rock area last week I was able to watch several newscast on each station, and was pleasantly surprised. Overall most of the stations look better then they used to. Some of your on-air are pretty good. However, some of them are not. I know there are a lot of changes going on in front of and behind the camera, so it will be interesting to see how you all look when I am back in town over the holidays.

If there's one thing Matt is good at it's self promoting. Be prepared to see a lot of "Matt is awesome" posts on here.

I think his Arkaelphia following is posting nice things about him. I covered a story there years ago and about a dozen folks asked if I knew Matt Turner like he was some celebrity.

Well of course they are. Matt is a celebrity in Arkadelphia. His parent are well known and well liked so he has a big support base there.

More people in this state are not fans of the Hogs than are.

What does that have to do with anything?

Matt isn't going to a franchise that's strong anymore in Little Rock. His press release was a poor compilation of fluff. Maybe at one time that mattered, and maybe more so if he were actually going to appear on the official razorback station in the market. At last check, that station has been KATV since Moses was a baby. Even so, KATV gives more time to the other teams than 4 or 11 combined. Word to the wise don't move from Hogville and think you can be sub par but tell us you love the piggies and we are going to watch. Oh, contrary.

I thought legendary former voice of the Razorback football games Paul Elles gave him his first job in broadcasting at Katv after he graduated from OBU not Mike Nail.

Was he "tapped" in the hot tub with 3 other dudes? I hear that is a past time at THV. I guess it is only the weather men.

Oh please, we all know that story and don't care any more. Give it a rest and move on.

Matt was killed Saturday night when his SUV ran off the road, struck an object and caught on fire. His 10 month old daughter, Preslee, his wife, Julee and the family dog, Romeo, were not with him. Prayers to his family.
