Before the rumor mongers get started, Dale has a debilitating medical condition.

Yea... sure he does. Maybe thats why his doctor denied his long term disability, was in trouble with the company, and eventually fired from the company.

KATC news director leaving

James Warner, KATC’s news director since September 2001, has accepted a similar post at KFSM, a CBS affiliate in the Ft. Smith/Fayetteville, Ark., market.

The station serves northwest Arkansas, the River Valley and eastern Oklahoma. That larger market represents a step up in his career, says Warner, a Memphis native who came to Lafayette from WBRC in Birmingham, a Fox affiliate. “It’s been a great ride,” Warner says of his near 6-year stint at Lafayette’s ABC affiliate (where he also worked as a producer in 1992). “I think the media in this market has had a tremendous evolution in that time — print and broadcast.” Warner points to the arrival of The Independent Weekly three years ago as well as numerous niche publications in the marketplace, but more specifically the recent launch of a 9 p.m. newscast by local Fox affiliate KADN — a move he maintains will have a minimal impact on KATC and its rival, CBS affiliate KLFY. “They’re not able to deliver the quality — news coverage and content people expect,” he says. Warner notes that KADN also does not appear to be devoting the resources necessary to make the product successful and claims it has picked up employees who were not able to cut it at either KATC or KLFY. “There are lots of hand-me-down people in their news operation.”

Warner believes he is leaving KATC with a much better news product that makes it a stronger contender for the top spot in local TV, a position still held by KLFY. “It’s a horse race,” he says. “I’m real proud to have had a part in that.”

KATC General Manager Andrew Shenkan hopes to announce an interim news director before Warner leaves May 31 and says a nationwide search will be conducted for his successor.

Cox's disability was approved. His doctor never denied it and, in fact, doctors aren't the ones who do that. The insurance company tried to deny it (which they usually do). He won on appeal.

He was never in trouble with the company and was not fired.

Get your facts straight.

Wow, that was nice. I can understand if you don't like me, but why go so far out of your way to spread an untruth like that? My disability was approved. Take a little time to lighten up and be thankful. Your life is better than you think.

wow! you all are cold! i used to work at kfsm ... and while dale was not and still is not my favorite person, he does not deserve to be talked about and lied about the way you all are doing. he really is sick and just hope and pray no one ever treats you all that way when you're ill. i know this blog thing is fun and all ... but remember, the ppl you talk about ARE REAL AND HAVE REAL FEELINGS!!!

I agree. I'm not a fan of KFSM but it's not because of Dale it's because of Van. Get out of the 50's. Good luck Dale and hope your health improves. Getting out of that place has to help.

Well at least they wont let Marla Cantrell and the idiot chief photographer Chad Sharpe run that place any further into the ground.

Although, at this point I doubt this new guy will prevent the downfall.

KFSM with the exception of Daren, Bridget and Mike looks like there still in college. The Big Nickle looks like a college tv station, not a station trying to compete with the big boys.

Maybe the new ND will do something about it like hiring some older veterans as reporters. Need crediable looking reporter instead of just kids-who can't work a news because they are green and don't know how!

I'm a former TV 5 employee and I agree with you at least on the Chad Sharpe comment. He is not chief photo material. He is buddies with Van and Dale---thus the reason this lazy person is still there instead of fliiping burgers at the fast food establishment down the street.

He loafs a whole lot and complains about having to go shoot spot news 5 minutes prior to him clocking out for the day. The other photos works hardier and deserves better than they get from their so-called leader Chad.

Maybe the new management will see this and it will be bye-bye Chad!

lol...here i am getting caught up on all the latest gossip and here's my name! I don't know why a lowly ex-photographer made it into this conversation. I will accept this as a compliment! As far as the wrecks its true. All 3 were breaking down all the time anyway and only 1 was my fault (hydroplaned off the road).

And while i didn't post any of the other comments in this thread I don't necessarily disagree with the statements.

As far as self proclaimed storm chaser -

see for yourself.

Also, hope everything goes well for you in the future Dale.

Hey Brian, why don't you and Garrett go some where and talk about the weather or Ashley Beck. That's two of your main topics to discuss.

Garrett was the only one who liked Brian over at 5. Everyone else hated him because he called in sick at least 3 times a week.

Well, at least I am big enough to use my real name on here. I didnt call in sick that much BUT honestly working at Channel 5 isnt/wasnt my top priority in life. That would be my wife and storm chasing... in that order not reverse! I could care less who likes me or who doesnt and I am sure whoever posted that has their own self esteem issues to deal with! The Ashley Beck comment was wrong for so many reasons. And honestly I took out 3 crappy vehicles that hopefully you have had replaced so really you should BE THANKFULL =) Oh yeah and get back to work!!!

I hope this "Warner," will get KFSM back on track. Who cares about NWA? Those of us who live in the river valley want news from western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma! Let KHOG and KWNA have northwest Arkansas. Their ratings are not the best anyway...poor babies.

At 9:29 AM, June 05, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Brian was a typical KFSM photographer. He was lazy sometimes, he sucked sometimes, he was awesome sometimes, and he worked his arse off sometimes. The exact same can be said of all the photographers at KFSM currently and nearly most all everywhere else. He always got excellent storm video though (something no one else wanted to or could do) and I have seen some of his still pictures and they are extremely impressive (some since he has been at 40/29 - which could explain KFSM's open hostilities towards him)

At 10:09 AM, June 05, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Brian could have done a good job as a photog, too bad he never showed up for work.

I think any station is stupid for not caring about one side of the mountain or the other. The only way KFSM stays on top right now is because local news is more popular in the river valley than it is in NWA. If you look at the breakdowns, next to nobody watches KFSM in NWA.... its a pretty good heat between KNWA and KHOG, but probably a good 75% watch KFSM in the river valley. If northwest Arkansas gets any bigger KFSM is going to be in trouble. While the river valley is great to have, I don't foresee it being able to support the entire market much longer. James and Local TV, LLC will hopefully realize this.

At 10:18 AM, June 05, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

And to note... James has a lot of work to do. Since Dale left (became ill) KFSM has no leadership and no good stories. KFSM misses things not only in NWA but even in the river valley.... their home turf. Everyone is asleep right now and is just coasting. KFSM's Fayetteville crew wouldn't know what to do if they didn't get press releases. And... judging from last night's newscast they don't know how to use a windscreen either. I hate to say it, but 40/29 truly has the best market-wide coverage, and a more professional newscast.

"I hate to say it, but 40/29 truly has the best market-wide coverage, and a more professional newscast"

HAHA, that's hilarious. Too bad their anchors (or anchor, you know who I am talking about) can't talk worth a darn.

The stations have their differences, but to say 40/29 is more professional is a joke.

At 11:22 AM, June 05, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

and to note more... in fairness to Brian - he never planned to be a lifer tv photographer anyway. He is better than that anyway, but he could have easily been the best at 5 if he had so chosen to be - because of his growing knowledge of still and video photography.

And as far as which station is more professional all you have to do is watch the newscasts and its obvious.

Hey Garrett's wife, the other Ashley, you are just jealous of Ashley Beck. She's the hottest one over there at Channel 5. You better check Garrett's SIM card!

>>next to nobody watches KFSM in NWA.... its a pretty good heat between KNWA and KHOG, but probably a good 75% watch KFSM in the river valley<<

You need to look at the ratings again. KNWA is #3 in NWA for their morning, 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. newscasts. They are competitive ONLY at 10 p.m. The entire rest of the day is a battle between 40/29 and KFSM.

You are right about the River Valley, KFSM dominates there, which gives them (at least until now) a solid market-wide lead. In fact, in raw thousands, KFSM has more viewers for their lowest rated newscast than KNWA has for their highest.

And before you start on the "older viewers" thing, the story is exactly the same in the 25-54 demo.

At 11:49 AM, June 06, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yea but it's all made up of 50-54.

At 10:10 PM, June 06, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well the new news director is certainly making a impact. The 10pm is just entering its first block and they have had extremely amateur photography, a pkg that didn't run, and numerous other highly visible mistakes. Who is the most professional???? Come on!

At 10:35 PM, June 06, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

They are all bad. All of the newscast on all the stations should hide their face. It's either young kid looking talent, tech mistakes or some talent that is over the hill. A station that is all about Ft. Smith, a station all about NWA and station that is not sure where they want to be. This is a problem of leadership at the top of all of them. Not one knows how to market.

The GM has set the tone of how the newsroom runs. A new ND changes nothing.

At 3:04 PM, June 07, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The station hasn't really got back on track since Eric Sullivan left. When Eric left, the ratings really dropped. He kept that station together over there in Ft. Smith.

At 3:36 PM, June 07, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

While Eric's departure did negatively affect KFSM it was more the fact that the reason he left was because of Van Comer's meddling. He didn't like Sullivan so he did things to make it more difficult on him (splitting time in fort smith/fay). Van is the cancer and until that cancer is removed - KFSM will continue to suffer.

Well, I thought this thread got deleted (rightly so!) but someone informed me otherwise.

Whats interesting about this whole thread is that most of the negative comments are from the IP address of LOCAL TV LLC which of course would be KFSM TV-5 and while that may not be interesting in and of itself. It ISSSS interesting to note that some of the negative comments about current KFSM employees and their families ALSO come from LOCAL TV LLC!!!

Anyway. I won't deny I have an addiction to pringles. So now the whole world knows my deep dark secret lol.
