Just Something That Makes Ya Go Hmmmm.....

This from an e-mailer:

Which numbers are correct?

A few weeks ago someone mentioned KATV padded the number of times they claimed a story on their website was veiwed.

On the homepage it says this under most requested stories.

Stranger Danger Part II: Prevent Child Abduction
read 1036 times

But on the "Job Center page" it says:

Stranger Danger Part II: Prevent Child Abduction
read 263 times

So which number is correct. Is KATV "enhancing" their numbers. Is this on par with newspapers inflating circulation numbers? It would be if KATV was actually making money on the web.

I noticed that KATV is advertising for an anchor position on the online Arkansas Democrat Gazette. Who is leaving? Kate?

No one is leaving. Just a formality as Christina Munoz will be permanently put in the 10pm anchor spot.

Seems to be a diferrence of 4X...

An early morning comparision.

Home page/jobcenter page
» Arkansas Researchers Study Strange Snake Behavior
read 236 times / 59 times
» Illegal Immigrants Found Working at Arkansas Plant
read 128 times /32 time
» Family Presses for Answers in Son's Death
read 104 times /26 times
» Expert Questions Existence of Ivory-Billed Woodpecker in Arkansas

I wonder which numbers will be changed today? I'm guessing the job center numbers will get inflated.

None of the numbers are inflated, they used to be. Each number mentioned here (homepage or job center page) are the number of times that story is read via those pages. Good way to set it up and track page views, lets you see where people are accessing your site. Obviously more people are reading via the homepage and don't care about jobs at KATV.

If you want the overall, just add them together, this isn't rocket science.

The KATV video site is really weak... full of old stories.

At 8:26 AM, July 28, 2005, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So you're telling me that exactly 4 times as many people read all the stories via the home page then the job page.

Still seems a little fishy to me.

At 8:46 AM, July 28, 2005, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Lots and lots of people sit at work and play on the computer, those numbers could easily be right

At 9:17 AM, July 28, 2005, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Looks like a logical thing would be to have only ONE counting system and not two. Anyway it has been deleted from the list as of this morning. KATV has to love the fact that WJLA in DC provides 99.9 percent of the video for them. Sounds like KATV could use a webmaster.

At 10:02 AM, July 28, 2005, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So KATV admits they had inflated the numbers, but don't do it anymore. (how do we know you stopped) Assuming you have stopped, at one time KATV knowingly lied to their viewers. How long did these lies run? And why should the "most watched" station need to lie to the viewing public? Could someone from KATV please explain how this is okay to do?

At 10:38 AM, July 28, 2005, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yawn... who cares how the numbers got screwed up... it's all vanity.

Here's something fun: Go to Alexa Web Search and type in all the tv station websites and see which one scores the highest:

Interesting...

"None of the numbers are inflated, they used to be. Each number mentioned here (homepage or job center page) are the number of times that story is read via those pages."

Look, I don't even work there and I could have explained this. Dcg needs to use his common sense before making an issue where none exists.

"The KATV video site is really weak... full of old stories."

Oh, so you're disappointed the "discrepancy" was explained, so now you have to change the subject so you can still rail on 7?

"So you're telling me that exactly 4 times as many people read all the stories via the home page then the job page."

This doesn't even deserve a response. Can't you read? Dummy. You are so confused, you poor thing.

"So KATV admits they had inflated the numbers, but don't do it anymore."

What? Where are you pulling this crap from?

Look, you people have way too much animosity towards that station. You make yourselves look unbelievably ignorant with the wild rumors and accusations. And if you start doing this to 4 or 11 or Fox or ANYONE, I'll be here again and again pointing out how dumbass you all sound.

Speaking of dumbass... who saw Tyler Baldwin doing that story the other day where he was using a computer on the air? Wonder if he was really surfing porn?

At 11:54 AM, July 28, 2005, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Alexa only tracks the surfing of web users that has their toolbar installed. SO that really can't be a true judge of the amount of traffic.

The poster with all the stats forgot this one:

Can't you guys stay on topic? Speaking of which, this topic is a DEAD one. I think the web number issue is resolved. BORING. Let's move on.

At 2:14 PM, July 28, 2005, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's still on topic... the more people who like Kate and Pam... the more web hit the site will receive.

What topic would you like to discuss?

At 2:41 PM, July 28, 2005, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You want the topic dead like Republicans want the Rove thing dead? KATV has been lieing about the numbers on their website. Not very nice from someone that wants your trust.

Jeez, you freaking sensationalist.
First of all, it's "lying" not "lieing." "Lieing" isn't a word, you loser.
Second of all, I think you missed the messages above. (Apparently you can't spell OR read.) Nobody's lying. It's an auto counter for each individual page upon which the story appears, dummy.

Lastly, I'm a democrat, so you can quit hyperventilating.

Dang, there's lots of angry people in Little Rock. It must be something in the water.

At 5:00 PM, July 28, 2005, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Not angry, just extremely jealous they don't work at KATV.

At 5:42 PM, July 28, 2005, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The web issue is not dead. I don't believe anybody is stupid enough to believe that EXACTLY 4X's as many people read EVERY SINGLE story on PAGE 1 as they do on the JOB PAGE. Every number on the Home Page is exactly 4x's as high as that on the Job Page.

Some people are stupid, but they are not that stupid.

At 6:50 PM, July 28, 2005, Anonymous Anonymous said...

We are smart enough not to work for KATV.

At 8:21 AM, July 29, 2005, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm stupid.... and happy !

The numbers are inflated. And the number of times they're "upped" depends on the tme of day. Overnight and early in the morning the numbers will be bumped by about 4 per. Then as the day goes on and internet activity picks up the inflation starts shrinking. Until the later in the day and then the inflation starts all over again.
