KTHV with “Today’s THV” remained the morning leader at 6 a.m. with an 8.2 rating and 29 share, while KATV’s “Daybreak” was close behind with a 7.5 rating and 27 share. KARK’s “News 4 Arkansas Today” had a 3.5 rating and 14 share.
6/20/2005: Numbers clarified thanks to a comment poster:
In May from 6:00 - 7:00 am, KTHV had a 8/29. KATV had a 5/20. Last May KATV had a 7/26. KARK ties with KATV with a 5/20. KATV lost 2 rating points as KARK and KTHV gained one rating point each. KATV lost 6 share points as KARK gained 6 share points.

This can't be good for KATV's bottom line. Since Daybreak accounts for a tad over 20% of their annual budget. Can you say make goods? There are only so many times Sissy can come on and hawk jewlery cleaners.
I think KATV's morning show was clearly second... and KARK was in third. Better check those numbers.
I don't think KARK can promote it's rating since they don't subscribe to the book any longer. Am I wrong?
If the rumours of KARK dropping Neilsen are true then no they can not promote the fact that they are number 2 according to NSI.
So fellow bloggers, what should KATV do to improve the numbers for the mornng show? I'm not looking for silly insults, just real thoughts.
Indeed check those morning show numbers. In May from 6:00 - 7:00 am, KTHV had a 8/29. KATV had a 5/20. Last May KATV had a 7/26. KARK ties with KATV with a 5/20. KATV lost 2 rating points as KARK and KTHV gained one rating point each. KATV lost 6 share points as KARK gained 6 share points. Looks like KATV'S viewers are switching to KARK. You do the math!
Randy, we're not going to tell you how to fix your morning show.
What are the 5 a.m. to 6 a.m numbers ?
Also give the numbers from the metro. I'm sure the gap is even larger in the metro. Looks like that trip to NYC sure did pay off. I hope the KATVers that went dropped off resumes.
Many bloggers here are short-sighted. There are many shows that struggled at first, then, went on to become real winners. KATV can do that same thing.
Great....here comes another Cheers comment. It was last...but then became the number one show...blah...blah...blah.. The difference there was quality. Cheers was a good show that no -ne found until the Summer. Daybreak was a good show that people left. I doubt they'll ever come back. If they're lucky they'll be able to hold on to the #2 spot but they'll never compet for #1, unless KTHV decides to get rid of some folks. (I think they're probably alot smarter then that)
Dale will not stand for being tied for last in the market. If the ratings don't change quickly then the show in its present form will not see the new year.
I think Jason Harper should be a regular in the studio... he's really good and adds to the chemistry. Question is, who gets booted?
The replacement for Devon will be a young attractive women. Then when the numbers are down in July, Mrs. Mayo will be let go and replaced with the new female meteorologist.
Eventually the other sidekicks will grow weary of coming in at 3 am everyday and drop off one by one and not get replaced. Jason Harper will quietly slide on to the set and the show will be just like it was before the shake-up. (Minus Steve, Julia and Melinda)
Ya'll keep talking about KTHV and KATV, but none of you are mentioning the others that are creeping up on #2.. KARK has a good morning show, with very good chemistry between the 3 people. I like Tracy Douglass, I liked her in the 80's too
True and from what I can tell, KARK was the only station to actually grow in the ratings this sweeps period.
What kind of a bounce did Fox 16 get with American Idol at 9 and how did DEEEEEWAYNE do with his short-lived talker?
Plain and simple THV's product and people are good. I get my news, weather and a little laughter at BJ or Tom's expense. Suits me just fine.
KATV has no apparent respect for its viewership. They lost me back when they fired Matt Mosler and that Julie gal. Now it's two wrongs that aren't right. And, why was Jason Harper overlooked as a Daybreak host? He's the only thing going for them and seems to be a nice fellow.

Younger people and married couples get up and rush off the work, so, they don't watch a lot of morning television. Is that right ?
So, does KTHV do well, because people like Tom and B.J. appeal to retirees? Is that is ?
The audience for all morning shows is fluid. Folks get up, turn on the tv and listen while they get ready. Most people tune is for about 1/2 hour. That's why most stories are repeated and weather happens so often. (That and it's a great time filler) The 50+ crowd was at one time KATV's berad and butter it helped propell them to huge ratings wins, but they've slowly ru them away too.
Jason Harper is AWESOME! He is truly the most entertaining, intelligent and best-looking reporter around. He would get snatched up by a larger market in a heartbeat.

Where is Beth? I don't think she's been on Daybreak the past couple of shows.
With Beth gone, the show must be really, really, really bad! Hopefully, she'll be back soon.
I hear Julia is now selling pharmaceuticals.
You know KATV will keep Beth.. she's great. And, of course, Melinda is a pro and she'll stay. So if Jason gets a seat, that means either Nicole or Shareese will be shown the door. Who do you people think gets to stay?
I think it's Nicole... easily. She has the most energy by a mile. Shareese is probably good at newspaper, and might want to go back there.
Doing a morning show is a TOUGH gig... who likes going to bed at 7 p.m. and getting up at 2 a.m. ?
KARK must be adding someone to their morning show, and soon. Barbara and Mike could use some help. So, will it be a good-looking guy, or, some hottie ?
Younger professional person here...I only have time to listen to tv news in the morning. My entire office watches 11's morning show - so do i, b/c its usually topic for early morning office talk. The older ladies in my office adore BJ, Robyn is cool as hell, and Tom is funny. There ya go.

How long does it take to like someone on the air? I mean, KTHV has, by far, the most experienced team around. They've been there for years. Do KATV and KARK have any realistic chance of catching them, regardless of what they air ?
First, KATV has to quit making blunders like firing two morning teams in a row. Not good PR for the one time "Spirit of Arkansas" station. People don't feel good about watching it and then when they do it is an insult. Channel 4 stands to gain in the morning if their chemistry gets balanced. But, in the meantime 11 is dominant.
KTHV is clearly personality driven. Very little substance, but good chemistry. KATV has no substance or personalities. KARK has lots of substance and good personalities. Does that mean KTHV'S success is because Arkansas viewers want personalities more than they want good news and weather coverage? Because KARK is offering more news and weather than anyone in town.
KATV's Saturday Daybreak is lacking, too. Jason Pederson is okay, but that's about it. Devon was great, but now he's gone. Of course, there's no competition on Sat. so people will watch if they want to.
Good point. Arkansas television is largely personality driven. I tend to want to get my news from the normal folks, who are good at what they do. 4 does have substance in the morning, just not the mix that's right for me. I watched 4 in the morning with Dave Woodman, when he left, I switched to 11. And, I have no complaints, so I'm staying put.
Capri should be the one to go from KATV's Daybreak. The demographics actually call for an older woman. That would help ratings.
A "former" beauty queen with a behind the scenes theatre job should stay behind the scenes.
Shareese is a good addition for the demographics and for her book smarts. TV needs more people who read beyond the teleprompter.
I, too, am happiest with KHTV. They worked out the chemistry without a (publicized) overhaul of the entire format.
You're out of your mind. I've known Nicole since high school (which, by the way, she is only a couple of years younger than Kondo and Mayo). She is an educator, taught at universities across the country, a championship debator and published writer. I saw the women at Riverfest and Nicole would be the first to say that this show is not a competition among the women. They all bring something unique, and it's obvious they all genuinely like each other.
You think Shareese should stay because she's black? That's a dirty way to play the race card. Shareese just doesn't have the energy, so, why keep her ?
You missed the point. Condo "appears" smart, Capri "appears" bimbo like. It doesn't matter what she has done in her life, loves, etc., if it doesn't read on the set. True, she has energy, but do you think that goofy stuff is representative of her personality? The others seem a little more sincere--but there is NO chemistry. I don't think these "gals" are going out for coffee after the show.
What is really needed is a seasoned, 50-ish woman (black or white, hispanic or asian). And don't you think KATV played the race card with Condo? That would be smart given the % of LR/Central AR that is African American.
I like Nicole. If she's that smart she might could have done a lot of things but decided to come back here. Does any one know what pageant Nicole was in? I thought I heard her say she was a Miss Oklohoma and would love to look that up.

Kondo is there for a reason, sure, and a lot of it is race. Melinda is playing the "older woman" role, even though she's not even 40 yet. Building a good morning show is about building relationships with the audience.. and that takes time. Let's give the show a year and see what happens. You have to admit, it took KTHV years to get to #1.
It did take KTHV a while to get to #1 but they were helped by KARK running off their audience and KATV firing the #1 morning team in the market. That didn't make KTHV the solid number 1 it just put them in the same ball park as KATV. But being tied for first wasn't good enough. So KATV fired another highly ranked morning team in their quest to be #3.

KARK either need to add someone to the morning show... or fire that weather boob and let Barb go it alone.
I like Mike. He is different, but lots of energy and personality. He always is dressed stylish and makes the weather fun.

Unlike anyone else in the morning.. Mike clearly knows weather and takes his forecast seriously. Honestly, I didn't like him at first.. but he grew on me.
KARK tried to add another female to the morning mix. Heard rumors it was someone from this market. Any idea what happened there?
Mike has no common sense... I've asked him some simple weather questions and he gave me the wrong answers. I mean, answers that are onbviously wrong. And he's not a good weather forecaster. All he does is say "well, the weather in Texas and Oklahoma today... will be in Arkansas tomorrow." Tough.
What are you talking about? He is by far the best meteorologist in this market, in any show!
Mike does not understand basic scientific principals.... enough said. He just reads whatever the National Weather Service says.
Every single weatherperson at KATV runs rings about Mike.

Tracy WhatsHerName on KARK does just as good a job doing the weather. She stands there, smiles and shows how the fronts move from west to east across the state.
And she has a much better rack, although paid for, than does Mike.
Let's get rid of BJ and Tom.
Get rid of BJ and Tom? They're both really good.. and are on the #1 morning show in the state. Funny how all the posters in here want everyone fired.

Daybreak is an insult to this community and to women, in general. Those four say, "bible-thumping bimbos" to me--especially the dark haired one. I will stick with BJ, Robyn and Tom.
I don't think these four ladies read the bible and i think they have something else on their mind.
